Big Country - See You (Live Vocal Performance) Irish TV, 1999

  • From the UTV show 'Kelly' in Northern Ireland from late October, 1999 (Exact date unknown)
Big Country play to their current single 'See You.'
Of particular interest here is the fact that they are playing to a backing track but Stuart is giving a live vocal performance so it is a unique version from this perspective.
I hope you like it and as always,
    Stay Alive!

Gods of music, no less, no more, I don't think I would have made it through life without Big Country to pick me up, motivate me and inspire me.

Andy, as always, many thanks for posting this. As most know, I have been a rabid fan since 1983 and lived through all this. I am constantly amazed at just how much I missed along the way. How have I not seen this clip before?!? The depth and power of the web continues to amaze me. Again, my eternal thanks for sharing all these things.

Hi over on this platform and thanks for the thanks, David! Yes, it's pretty cool what still pops up. I missed most of the TV performances when they happened (wrong country to be living in, BC wise) so it's a big catch up for me too, finding new stuff. 👍

Ironically, it seems this song was about Stuart Adamson himself. Some of the lyrics indicate a wanting to be at peace before leaving. Shortly after this change in Big Country's sound, Stuart did leave us.

Stuart was no stranger to mimed or vocal only performances when playing with Skids on Top of the Pops. Subsequently, apart from “The Tube”, “Old Grey Whistle Test” and New Year’s Eve (Ne’erday) presentations, the majority of economic, tv options were to record mimed studio band with simultaneous album/single overdubs. Easy to spot that the drums aren’t mic’d although a guitar/mandolin radio mic could be easily tucked away. So, cheap as chips and the fee for turning up for one song and a minimal rider is all the production company have to worry about.
Anyhoo, great song from a mature themed album revealing some life-worn lyrics and poignant tunes. “Your Spirit to Me” has always struck me as the latter; as dark and visionary as Cash singing, “Hurt”.

I very seldom ever post anything negative, but I'm sure the blonde hair was courtesy of his 2nd wife Melanie Shelley (hairdresser, make up artist, etc. to the Stars) and probably played a big part in Stuart's battle with depression & alcohol. I wonder how she sleeps at night..sorry, I'm not trying to piss anyone off..just an opinion.

I'm sorry they're my young favourite band ever....i loved them, but the later stuff just isn't what i was dreaming of in their earlier stuff.....even the slower songs on steeltown always didn't fit....i reckon they'd have been better going down a 'fishermans blues' way, rather than pseudo usa rock....were always best when at their rawest, emotional, pumped up, joyousness....i.e. the first few albums
