I Made a Self Sustaining Ecosystem for Cherry Shrimp Here's How!

- When I began making aquariums these types of jars were some of the first aquariums I built so it feels good to be using them again! In 2020 the quality of jars that I was buying dropped to the point that I couldn't find any that were clear enough to use and have good visibility. Yet I kept checking around at department stores, amazon, garage sales, thrift stores and more but there were none to be found. Until this year. I stumbled upon some while doing my usual checks and I couldn't resist. I do hope that you enjoy it as much as I do!
Simple and stunning. Simply stunning!
Thank you that means a lot!
Awesome jar scape dude!
Thank you!
With the clarity of this video I believe you I'll get a lot of views. Also can you tell me how much it cost for all that plants?
Thank you and the plants cost about $80.
Really nice,love it👍
Thank you!
sick video man, good luck to your channel
Thank you very much!
Cool!
Hi! Looks great! New sub from the UK 😊
Thank you I appreciate the support from across the pond!
Great video! Nice work. Got me to subscribe to see More
Awesome, thank you!
Add some small fishes too that would look awesome with shrimps
There is no aeration in the jar, also the jar is sealed off by the lid. have the shrimps or fishes survied??
They are thriving in another jar that I have set up but unfortunately I was impatient with this one and the shrimp passed away.
Ok questions.. .. is self sustainable for how long? Did you make some water changes and how often?
Did they need open lid for oxygen?
Or you don't need to do anything..??
It's not 100% self sustainable but it's pretty close! I'd say just a 20% water change once a month and it will be happy. Trimming the plants is the other big thing to think about which will probably be about 20 minutes every 3 months. The colony of shrimp that I got these from is in an identical jar just different plants and I haven't seen any problems from leaving the lid on!
@@thestonetortoise so not often water changes just once per month with open lid and we are ok? I'll try it..
Glad to hear it!
@@eastfightersboxing-kickbox2034 The plants make oxygen, so they won't run out with the lid closed
Do you have a link to the jar or do you remember the size/gal?
I don’t have a link but it’s a 2.5 gallon cookie jar.
I don’t have a link but it’s a 2.5 gallon cookie jar!
Where did you find that jar!!? Awesome
Thank you and I got the jar off Amazon! I have also found some at Walmart but the quality of the glass isn’t as high.
nice i prefer buce but i like it alot
Buce is definitely my favorite too but I'm a little low right now!
Please forgive me if this is a stupid comment. I literally just started watching these types of videos a few weeks ago when I bought my daughter her first aquarium and I am still learning. Every video I see about adding Cherry Shrimp says to drip acclimate them... yet you just poured them into the bowl. Just how hardy are Cherry Shrimp? I had pretty much discounted getting any because I felt it was too complicated for a novice to jump straight into.
Not a stupid question at all. I definitely rushed getting the cherry shrimp in the tank but I have a very similar set up and I added them straight in with out drip acclimation but after the aquarium had about two months to set up. This gives the aquarium time to produce bio film which the shrimp will feed on. All in all shrimp require more patience than anything and are fairly simple once the aquarium is established.
@@thestonetortoise So shrimp require less time to acclimate if the tank is established?
Can you list the plant that you use??
Micro sword, anubias nana, anubias consensus mini, misc bucephalandra, anubias nana petite, java fern, rotala h-ra, rotala narrow red, and rotala indica green.
@@thestonetortoise thank you ☺️
so is there another substitute for gorilla glue? I just dont want to add that if I had the choice
You can wedge the rhizomes in between the cracks and the roots will hold them there in time.
did it all die? plants and animals? im just curious.
The plants will be happy with minor maintenance and if I had been more patient the shrimp would have done great as well.
Which light ie waat & lumen r u using
It's the uns flat one nano on the lowest setting. I don't know the exact lumens unfortunately.
What is the you used?
which glue do you use for plants?
It’s gorilla glue gel. The liquid stuff works as well but it’s a bit harder to work with.
@@thestonetortoise Thanks mate! the gorilla glue has so many different types, which one do you use ? and are they no poison to the fish or shrimps?
@@dongqiu5331 I use the gel and liquid typed from them, if it has Cyanoacrylate in it it should become inert right when it hits water.
@@thestonetortoise Thanks!
Really helpful that little tip and reasoning behind it! Chaars
