I think a lot of people miss the subtlety of the actor who's playing Dex. If you go back to previous episodes, every time people put Dex down even jokingly, it hits him super hard. I because it's so subtle, I think a lot of people miss how much it messes him up, but the pain in his eyes is so hard to watch. And it really does seem like he's trying to be happy for her, but it's just been dropped on him with no chance to deal and you get the feeling he was already depressed.
I think calling Dex a parasite is a little harsh. Even through the bad times, he's been good for Emma. He went about it the wrong way, but he pushed her to follow her dreams.
I feel like Emma isn’t Dex’s last resort, it’s his last stop. He knows that once he’s with Emma, that’s totally it for him. So, he waits and waits cause he’s immature or not good enough for her etc etc. And on the flip side Emma never takes the jump cause she doesn’t see how much dex loves her
"pretend tonsillitis" = their gut-wrenching love for each other. When Emma told Jean-Pierre about her "pretend tonsillitis," she's implying that she told him about her feelings for Dex. It's a happy occasion!

@@boreilly82 I disagree with that take because I think she knew from the start that Dex didn’t have tonsillitis and that he was just heartbroken about the situation. So there was a mutual understanding about the implication of the “pretend tonsillitis,” which she told Jean-Pierre about. But that’s just my interpretation! To each their own!
@@loriinmedicine + the boyfriend obviously knew too. He was very uncomfortable when he saw the state Dexter was in. Tonsilitis doesn't make you choke on your words and tear up lol.
i think you guys are a little hard on dex. especially about the fight they had. while he was definitely at fault he wasnt lying about emma, she majorly judged and belittled him a lot in the name of "humor". was in the right? def not but at the end of the day they both were toxic in varying levels at that point. its clear to me that he's always loved her but put her on a pedestal that he didnt believe himself worthy of, or that he didnt want to drag her down to his level. He has such high expectations of her that he was disappointed she didnt put herself forward like he thought she shouldve. but at the end of the day they both love each other and have grown to the point they can both provide what the other needs. For dex he grew in maturity and in confidence of himself as a person, for emma she grew into herself and is in a place of success that she deserves
Yeah obviously he was being a dick that night but after so many jokes on Emma’s part about how dumb he is it must at a certain point lower his self esteem. Both of them have hurt each other, both of them have not communicated the way they should and both of them needed to grow up and be sure of who they are and what they want to be able to finally enter into a relationship
Y’all Dex is happy he’s just post sex sleepy lmao. They both genuinely love each other so much this is a happy moment for them😭 also Dex is not a parasite????? While he was harsh in their fight, he was not wrong either. It has been about bad timing not that they only want each other when they have a partner. They have always wanted each other at all times, its just one is always more scared about messing their friendship than the other. But they have BOTH pushed each other to be better (Dex has pushed Emma to be better too). The “you can’t rid of me that easily line” hits because BOTH have tried to stop their feelings for the other and BOTH are aware that has never worked.

Yeah I feel like the second she decided to go back she knew it was over with him. She just didn't break up with him because there wasn't time, but she didn't lie and hang back just to cheat. It was Dex and she knew in that moment she had to go back and couldn't leave him there after having not chosen him or something.
oh also while i 100% understand the uncomfortability at the mentions of suicide, thats how a lot of people/specifically british people joke around. While it can def be an indication of it being a serious ideation, it is a way to make fun of the bad times. Its how i and a lot of my friends joke around so we saw it less as a real "threat" and more as him coping with the way his life is going to shit. of course its open to interpretation if you think it was real, but thats just one way to look at it
You're very hard on Dex guys, the suicidal reference was sarcasm. Dex needs purpose, he has money he's not on his uppers.
Wait that makes me sad that you guys think Dex is a parasite. I did not have the same reaction at all to them finally having this moment. I think I felt the same about your reaction to the kiss at Tilly's wedding. There is so much context to that kiss that almost disqualifies it as cheating. The same thing applies here, even though Emma, this time, is with someone else. If you make things black & white, yes, on paper it qualifies as cheating but their relationship is soooo much more complex than that. It's so clear they're soulmates.

Damn, you guys made me soooo depressed over one of my favorite episodes! I do get it. Initially thought same about Dex’s comment at the train station and being left at the apt alone… but … ultimately it was soooo rewarding after 11 long years of their relationship. Plus Leo’s acting -raw emotion speaking about Jaz and his heartbreaking reaction to Emma leaving w JP was among the best I’ve seen.

Is their relationship weird (as stated) or is the better word complex? Relationships and life are complex. I’m a little perplex with all the judgement going on about these two characters. Sometimes good people make bad decision. Period.

I definitely don't find their relationship "weird" at all. I'm not sure what "weird" means when they say it, tbh. Because ... I have been, in the course of my life, both emma and dex. I don't even find it particularly "toxic" - another buzz word. They're both complex people who make mistakes and who love each other - even just as friends - and so it's worth it to go through awkward moments because ... this is your friend, and it's worth it to tolerate that so you can still be friends. I don't know. none of this seems weird to me at all.
Relationship in normal people was just as “messy” yet they ate that shit up and their chemistry put me to sleep 😂
I don’t get what’s weird either. It’s almost like there’s a moral compass for imperfect characters showing depth and realness.
@@sheilaomalley4055 I think it's possible that they start with the realization that Emma and/or Dex is cheating, that this is a cheater moment, and go from there into elaborating on how they feel about their relationship. Maybe. This is barely more than a guess from me and I could be totally wrong.

I don't necessarily disagree with a whole lot of what you're all saying...but respectfully, I need y'all to get over it so we can all start the next episode happy about them being together lol. We'll acknowledge that they're both very complicated people who needed to grow as people apart, so that it would be good once they got together and keep it moving. Please and thank you boys.

I totally don't think that at this point he thinks of her as "a shoulder to cry on". When they slept together (three times!) he was drunk, maybe, but he loves her, he knows he loves her at this point. It's obvious to him. there are plenty of girls he could go have a drunk hookup with. never ever with emma. I think the fact that emma still thinks he thinks that is the real issue here - not issue as in bad - but as in ... everyone walks around with stories in their heads about what is going on, and often we are telling ourselves old stories - or stories that are now out of date, but boy those bad stories have a way of hanging on.
This is what happens when you have more experience in your life - when you're in your 30s as opposed to your 20s, or your 40s as opposed to your 30s ... you really have got to start looking at how you tell your own stories. Am I still telling myself that old story? Or ... is it a new story now? IMO, Emma retreating to "you just thought I was a shoulder to cry on" is her still being in the old story - not realizing Dex is in the new story, the one where she needs to go now. But you have to let go of the old story first. Sorry for babbling. I just think the negativity about Dexter is a little unfair because ... this isn't a show about a a patient good woman waiting for a bad immature man to grow up - none of that patriarchal old-fashioned shit. This is about two people with very similar insecurities - despite having very different lives - both of whom live WAY up in their heads most of the time - and both growing up and changing. yes, he was an asshole 6 years ago or whatever, but God help us if we will all be judged forevermore on our behavior on our worst day.
By this point, Dexter is full on in love with Emma - and he has not been able to stop thinking about making love with her - and she basically ghosted him. He's human. He's not a jERK. his feelings are hurt not because he's a man-baby but because he LOVES her.

Omg you HIT everything on its head! Dexter is so vulnerable and raw here. This is the most vulnerable we have seen him with anyone and Emma finally sees that he’s ready. I think her fear couldn’t accept that he wanted her but seeing him so emotional really changed her mind.
I don’t think the guys really understand the depth of their connection. Their connection is deep. Dexter values her way too much by this point, and he’s obviously has changed and evolved.

I saw both movie and series but Leo and ambika my favourite they justified for their character 💯 especially chemistry and acting ❤

I agree with some comments to watch episode 13 and 14 together ( back to back) as this will be the best option to review the story. Otherwise, you will lose the importance of their love story.
Dex did everything to make his marriage work but Silvie cheated. It’s been a long journey but he now realises Emma’s the one. Hurry up with the next episode guys.
I would say that Dex always knew Emma was the one but when they stopped talking he commenced a relationship with Sylvie. When Sylvie became pregnant and they got engaged, Dex saw Emma at the wedding and he realized that his feelings never went away. I agree, Dex tried to make his marriage work even though he was in love with someone else but finally they both admitted their feelings 😊

My favorite episode 😭 it only took a decade 🥹 you can tell Emma was worried Dex was just looking for someone to lean on but it all changed when he told her he wasn’t coming and she realizes how serious he actually is about her. The irony is that she’s been waiting for him the whole time and only now is he mad she moved on when he could’ve had her way earlier

Dex has always been very flipflopy when it comes to women and his relationships. Every time it hasn't worked out, he goes back to Emma, so I understand her frustration in this.

Emma is his best friend. He’s not choosing her after everyone else. She’s constant in his life. When Emma knew that he wasn’t ready for her, she moved on with her life romantically (Ian) but they still both valued their friendship. The women that he dated prior to Sylvie received the worst parts of him because he was battling grief and addiction. Did Emma deserve to be with him at that time? No, she deserved more.
They grew up, and when he was fully free - he wanted Emma. In truth, he always wanted her. But now, he could give her what he couldn’t give her before.

It depicts how close their friendship better in the book because it mentions how they’d often have hour-long nightly phone calls, how they’d spent time in her flat listening to music and talking all night platonically. They were the most important person in each other’s lives for so long. He supported/encouraged her when she was down about her career and she was there for him when he needed her. They had such a strong bond, neither wanted to ruin in.
When he told her he wasn’t ready for a relationship in Greece, he meant he wasn’t ready for the type of relationship she deserved. He was young and had to get something out of his system. He knew if he messed it up, he would lose not only her, but the friendship that served both of them for so long. He wasn’t stringing her along. From the start, she was the only girl he sent postcards/letters to, the only girl he invited to his parents house for Christmas, the only girl he loved spending time with even if it was platonic, and the only girl he could be completely vulnerable with. And Emma was with the theater director, with Ian for six years and bought a condo together, had an affair with the headmaster, so she really wasn’t sitting around waiting for him either. Emma walked away when she’d felt Dex was no longer capable of being her
friend due to his substance abuse.
I think when they reunited in the maze, you could tell emotionally they were both ready for each other, but Sylvie was pregnant and Dex did the responsible thing and married her. The kiss in the maze was their goodbye to what could’ve/should’ve been. In this episode, they’ve both finally grown up and are ready to be open and honest with each other. Emma sees just how serious Dex is by how emotional he becomes and she changes her mind. You can tell in the scene how scared she is he’s going to break her heart, but she finally drops all her barriers and listens to her heart. Is Dex a highly flawed character? Yes. Has he always been in love with Emma? Also yes.

"he goes back to emma" that's not really accurate imo. they're friends throughout. he's not "using her' for sex. their friendship is a consistent thing - except for the years after their friend breakup. he's not drunk calling her, or trying to mess up her life, or using her then ghosting her, etc.. she's got her own life going on - she had a whole damn relationship while they were friends. she's not just waiting around for him. they have this unrequited thing happening - alongside their friendship.

I'm enjoying this show so much and I love the performances, but Dex and Emma would not make a good couple at this juncture in their lives. Before this show, I've not often seen a show/movie create a very believable love between two people while also demonstrating why they shouldn't be together.
I feel the same Rob. I didn't care for how they spoke at the end, or rather, since I have seen the film version with Anne Hathaway and Jim Sturgess, I just didn't care for how Ambika and Leo played it. Jim and Anne played the scene perfectly as it was the climactic romantic moment in the film. But here, Ambika's Emma sounded angry, and Leo leaned in too heavily on the suicidal/depressed aspect. It just left a bitter taste after that beautiful lovemaking scene.
I think it's valid that Emma sounded angry. If you've read the book, Ambika portrayed Emma more accurately. Her performance was nuanced that it's easy to overlook. I also think mentions of suicide or depression make us feel uncomfortable, but that's life though. Both Leo and Ambika did the book justice in my opinion.
The movie was over the top and not realistic. This series is realistic, and over acted shows of romance isn’t real life. Emma in the series is just like Emma in the book.
Emma’s emotional walls have come down, and she’s rightly letting him know that she’s giving him a chance but don’t screw it up. I could see myself saying that to someone if I have been guarded and protective of my feelings but now I’m willing to try to be open and love someone. She’s incredibly vulnerable in that moment…and rightly scared of what is to come. You see immediately after Dexter reassures her…her face relaxes, and she smiles. To me, that’s love and real.
Even with the depression/suicidal part of it - that’s real life feelings. I think people are uncomfortable with real emotions being reflected in what they believe romance should look like. The movie appears as grandiose - this is just raw.
I believe the emotions both positive & negative in this adaption reflect those portrayed in the book more accurately than the film. The book's author David Nicholls is well documented as giving his full support & blessing to this production. He even wrote the next episode himself. The two leads in this production are both outstanding & extremely talented young actors. I predict great futures for them both.
i've heard so many say the movie is so much better and now i have to check out the movie! i tried so many times to get into this show and just couldn't. but i'll definitely check out anne's performance. she's always stellar!
