It's not just Emma's death day, it's the anniversary of their first meeting.
Yes, thank you! Sure the death day ends up being the same as the day they meet, which sucks, but think back to Emma’s speech at Tilly’s wedding. If they had not met on July 15, how would their lives have been different? If they hadn’t gone from being total strangers to the most important person in one another’s lives? That is more the point of the date on the calendar.
Also they talk about it being St. Swithins Day (not sure if it’s spelled right sry) and when it rains on July 15 it would rain all summer…And the only day where we actually see it rain over the years is the day Emma dies.. which is symbolic if you think about it…because even when we saw it leading up to it we saw Dexter with the umbrella it was kind of telling something bad would be happening like almost like it’s out of their hands…
@@clariemoon2157 there is some rain in ep 7, the big fight, at the start of the episode. Also fitting. 😩 Suki and the crowd are holding umbrellas at her tv shoot, Dex has rain drops on his jacket when he meets up with Em, and the road is wet.
Which makes it worse
In the book, the author withheld their kiss (from the reader) until the end of the story and described it as the sweetest kiss either one of them would ever know…hence why the kiss is how they ended the series.
damn this series made me bawl my eyes out. ive never read the book but now i really want to! such a beautiful but tragic story
Apparently, they cut out Dex saying "You were my whole story" after Emma says she doesn't want to be a footnote in the story of his life. When Dex is crying alone on his bed he is supposed to say, "I wasted so much time." That destroyed me even more.
I'm glad they cut both of these lines as they really didnt need to be said. We, the audience, can see for ourselves that Dex felt them.
The kiss montage is soul crushing.
Observation: when drunk dex is on Sylvie's bathroom floor he is in the same position as Emma when she was dying 😢
Wow hadn’t realized that.😮
NOBODY NEEDED THIS OBSERVATION OK?!?
Did not realize it but now that you mention it, it’s so easy to understand why this show has such a profound impact on our senses. Fantastic writing
@@KDL1464 yes, I agree. I like the intentional mirroring throughout the series. When you are watching it you don't realize how much attention to detail the directors have given the scenes to heighten the emotions.
im so UPSETTTT that the writer couldnt just LET EMMA BE HAPPY 😭
It’s the curse of a miniseries following two lovers over a period of years adapted from a book. Same thing with normal people like the just can’t let them be together
I read the book and she literally dies like 5 pages before the book ends. I was like “WHAT?!?!?!” Then threw the book across the room 😂😂
Yeah fuck life lessons I wanted to see them be happy and have kids
Knowing we’ve been watching Emma’s death day for all these years hurts me 😢
😢
I really thought I wasn't gonna sob again but I really did for the second time. This hurt so much! Never watching this show again lol but thank you guys for the reactions!
didn’t expect to sob either but i did badly omg
i know bryce will never let me down with the tears!
I haven't read the book or seen the movie adaptation, but the part that gets me is "you have a birthday and a death day"- we saw the birth of their friendship on July 15, 1988, and Emma's death day on July 15, 2002. We also saw a temporary deathday for their relationship on that date in 1994, and their reunification on that day in 1997, and them finally becoming a couple on that day in 1999. It's not just that we saw her death, but that we saw the anniversary of the date that made up their life together, and yes he'll always mourn the 2002 version of that day, but he still has every reason to be grateful for that day in a dozen other ways. And it's a shame that they lost the chance to be together all 14 of those years when she had so little time, but those are the intervening years that led toward them growing to be ready for each other and the time they did have, and it gave Dex his daughter who he loves, and who Emma loved. And at the same time, there's a legend associated with St. Swithin's Day that's very Groundhog-ian where it is a sort of omen of what's to come. The one and only time we see it raining on that day (that I can recall) is her actual death day, and that's largely what causes her death (the decreased visibility and slipperiness of the road), because that's the first time where the future for them isn't bright- where they lose their future together.
Like I said, I haven't read the book, but I did look it up and Arthur's Seat is thought to have been named such for King Arthur, and to maybe have even been where the castle of Camelot was situated- which just brings up a whole lot of "Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot’"- their time together was too brief, but it was there and magical for the time they had, and there are remnants to hold on to.
Love this. Except its also raining on the day of their argument. Suki's audience all hv umbrellas and Dex jacket is wet when he meets Emma before they head in the restaurant
This is such a heart wrenching story but it reflects how life often is, unpredictable and unfair.
this show crushed me, right person wrong time is the hardest trope to watch because it’s so relevant to real life. “god, we wasted so many days” is one of my favorite lines from cmbyn and it’s just so sad to think that life and time happens and moves on without us
Now you know what we all went through lol. I couldn’t stop thinking about this show for months after I first watched it. Everything - down to the writing and the acting - felt real and raw and unfiltered. Especially the experience of grief and loss. Every choice Dexter and Emma made wasn’t always the right one from the viewer’s POV but it made sense within context. It made sense knowing what they were going through at that moment. So the bad timing felt realistic and not just there to fabricate TV drama and delay the relationship if you know what I mean. They needed to grow up to be together but once they grew up, they unfortunately didn’t get to have a lifetime.
I was familiar with the story but the show elevated it so much more. 10/10 for me.
From the point that Dex is sobbing on the bed at his parents’ house to tears dripping off his nose in the room with Emma’s things = 😭 for me and just amazement at Leo Woodall’s performance in this episode. Heard Leo say in a podcast that after that scene (box room scene) he had to go somewhere and sit by himself to recover from taking himself to such an emotionally shattering place. I think that’s incredible and shows how connected he gets as an actor to the character. Also, heard in an interview that this was one of the first episodes they filmed, which seems crazy that he could get that emotional before first acting through all the other years of the story.
He's so good at the cry acting, he's probably the best I've seen personally
I wanted to wrap my arms around Bryce while he was sitting there silently, with his eyes welling with tears. Each time I watch this show, I start crying earlier and earlier knowing how it ends. Such a beautifully heartbreaking show.
My toxic trait is watching people watch this final episode
lol same 😭
lol same to make me feel better I cried uncontrollably
Currently sobbing😭 I’ve really enjoyed watching the show with you guys, thank you so much!❤️
I still can't believe she died. I was too distracted thinking she was just paralyzed to notice her taking her last breath. And then in the next episode with Dex drunk and spiraling, I lost it. Tbh I started crying during the wedding episode and then I never stopped. Even after the show ended, I just cried in my bed for hours. I thought I was okay until the flashback scenes and the kiss montage at the end 😭
I'm surprised no one has mentioned - July 15 is the day Emma and Dex properly met, but it's also the day Emma and Ian first met! And the day Emma and Ian properly broke up. So it's very fitting that he was there with the group to check on Dex.
Good point. Also the day Emma started dating Ian!
Bryce is such a empath ❤
the first time i cried while watching that episode was when Tilly hugged dex and just held him there. i dont know why but it just couldnt handle it. its engraved in my soul
Storytelling on this one is just beautiful. Thank you guys for reacting to this show. I've enjoyed all your commentaries throughout. 🙏🏼
This is so heartbreaking! I can’t imagine loosing your S/O irl and having to move on with life 🥺😩😩😩😩
Bryce you had a lump in your throat! thanks to you men for your emotions, it makes us think, you never know what life's going to throw at us.
I literally bawled my eyes out during this episode and for like 30 minutes after I watched it…😭😭
It's just never ending crying this episode
Has anyone recommended BABY REINDEER (2024) to y'all yet? I binged it today... it's phenomenal... funny, awkward, scary, poignant... and based on something that actually happened to the writer/star, Richard Gadd. 💎 Give it a shot.
Btw the series isn’t based on the movie. It’s based on the book.
I broke down when Lilac Wine started playing. So heartbreaking
I wasn't sure if this ending would match up to the movie ending, which I really liked, but it certainly did. Beautiful, bittersweet ending. Bryce needed a cuddle toward the end there. 😢
So did I!
20:10 I don't know why this part hit me so badly 😭 my tears never stopped!
The series follows the book more closely than the film, which was panned by critics. Acting is brilliant, as is the music. The final scenes with Vanbur playing destroys me every time. I enjoyed watching it with you.
The writer did say the events after the show Dex is doing well and living a happy life taking care of his daughter :) so he’s ok and will be ok but I feel him losing Emma he will probably never love again which is sad :(
Edit: hope you guys watch the movie from 2011!
This series makes me want to have alternate endings like SLIDING DOORS! Bryce was so cute trying to hide his tears. Love your reactions as always. This series is both joyfully and heart wrenching at the same time. I could watch this show all over again without being bored. Thank you all once again for this great interaction. It felt like watching it with my besties. All three of you are so astute, with great insight and not afraid to be vulnerable. That was so refreshing to watch.
Loved this series. I have seen a number of reactions to this series and you are the first to really pick up on the fact that the date we have been seeing all along is Emma’s death year on year.
Also she was definitely not a footnote in his life.
Also btw, in the book, Dexter ends up in a relationship with the employee from his cafe…
thank god they changed that shit details in the series. i feel the series improved all the annoying stuff of the book so the series made the story much better
@@AliciaRuiz49 I know! I was angry enough after ep 13. If they’d added this plot line, I would have been done!
@@AliciaRuiz49completely agree! It’s bad enough Emma died, him ending up with Maddie in the series would’ve deducted from the story. I didn’t enjoy that part of the book. I also thought that the way they changed parts in episode 12 vs the book and the first episode showing Arthur’s Seat scenes was really great narrative choices for the series. It’s a pity they couldn’t find a way to keep Emma alive in the series but I do think it makes for a more powerful and poignant ending.
@@laurenfenenga5902 absolutely. in the book i feel like dexter never mature, even i couldn't understand how emma could likes him bc he was an asshole he was just the classic charming and attractive boy, just expecting to fuck with her some day... but in the series dexter really care about her, you can really see how the friendship make to each other feel and be better with themselves. and yeah i think emmas death was important to show us how he finally matured (dealing with it just by himself, not by a new relationship just 10 months after......)
so yeah i loved they changed all this shitty things!!
Watching your reactions today while I’m in Edinburgh for the weekend and have visited the steps and the old college at the university where they shot the series. Really enjoyed seeing your thoughts on the show and looking forward to more reactions especially Peaky Blinders.
Never thought I'd put myself through this again and never would I think a reaction video would devastate me just the same, but here we are... well, thanks for the support through it I suppose. I knew I'd have Bryce right there with me at the least lol.
seeing all these scenes again got me wrecked. i’m gonna stay delulu and pretend the show ended at episode 12
The whole smiths day (idk how to spell it) basically foreshadowed Emma’s death, in literature summer symbolises life, and rain is usually sad and gloomy, so having the one day being smiths day aka the 15th of July is a very good use of it, and the one day it rained during the 15th is the day Emma died.
Thank you guys for the lovely commentary throught out the 14 episodes. Just sitting here and crying all over again. Currently, *One Day* the best series on Netflix. Cheers
This is the best series especially Leo and ambika chemistry and acting 💯.....tq guys ❤
Sylvia is cool because Dexter’s pain is her daughter’s pain. She helps him to protect her daughter.
It is sad they never got to have a child together like they wanted and Dex didn’t have one more part of Emma with him, but it is true to life sadly.
feeling all the feels again watching you guys reaction! 😢
God this got me again, that last kiss ruined me😭 Thanks for your great reactions boys, hope you’re ok Bryce😅
Thoroughly enjoyed watching this with you. I was mad and then cried in episode 13. Thank you guys.
Now I think you should watch the film to compare and see how they slightly changed the story.
I hate how this show got me invested in dex and Emma only to pull my heart out and take Emma out of his life the writers are sick for that overall a great show and the acting great throughout loved the reactions
I don't know why I put myself through this knowing I'm going to always end up in tears but it's worth watching it with you guys!
ONE DAY - you guys should watch 'the first take' on the book - the movie 'One Day' from 2011, directed by Lone Scherfig and with Anne Hathaway playing Emma ♥
I just hate that she had to pass on the same day they met, it’s too much and I wonder if either of them realized or if time just slipped by for them both and the fact they could’ve gotten together a decade ago but they both hadn’t gotten where they wanted to in life yet and grown but they could’ve grown together and figure it out as life partners. It just makes me sad to see him lose everything all over again and it’s unfair but they had so many opportunities and it honestly goes to show that life is short and if you feel a way for someone you let them know. Plus the scene with her ghost sitting next to him by the wall always breaks me
As soon as I read your caption on the video i KNEW it was valid and relatable 😩
I balled my eyes out at the end of this and I never cry especially at shows (other than at Hoppers “death” in ST)
you guys has to watch heartbreak high!!!!
e de novo eu passei o último ep INTEIRO chorando.... na primeira vez que eu assisti eu soluçava de tanto chorar, acho que porque eu não esperava um final assim...passei uma semana inteira depressiva pensando nesse final. Eu amo a Emma e ver o Dex triste sem ela me deixa no fundo do poço
I'm somewhat glad he didn't have a kid with Emma. No child deserves to grow up without their mum and imagine dex trying to look after a child while dealing with his own saddness after her death.
bro i just watched stand by me and now there’s a reaction to ep14 - i’m an emotional wreck rn
Based on a book guys not the movie!!! This series is more loyal to the book then the movie, except for the ending. But i like the ending for the show more than the book!
If any of you are readers, you should check out the book
I cried watching a bloody reaction to the show, let alone the show itself!
A heart wrenching show but so good!
Its based on a book, not the movie.
Him kissing her instead of only asking for her number is showing what could’ve been and all the many other kisses after that that we did see lol if only he had done that sooner, they probably would’ve already happened
The kiss actually happened. All the flashbacks we see in that episode all happened and Dex was remembering his fond memories. Even in the book, it says that this was the sweetest kiss they both have ever known. 😢
@@user-xu8cg2ll2o didn’t happen in the show, we would’ve remembered which is why people question if it actually happened
We also didn't see the conversation Emma had with Dex when they were walking down Arthur's seat and she said 'she doesn't want to be a footnote in his story ' but that did happen.
@@user-xu8cg2ll2o we did see that part but the kiss we didn’t cause if it had actually happened they would’ve happened also
The kiss happened. It was placed at the end of the book/film/show as the thing that inspired them to keep in touch. Swopping numbers signified their friendship, sharing that kiss signified the love, emotions and feelings that they had only begun to explore
20:06-20:12 broke my heart 💔
I think you guys would love the show "Lessons in Chemistry."
got me again, sob every damn time 😭
The reason they show THIS day through the years is because it’s the anniversary of the day they met. I loved the book and the movie (years ago) and I enjoyed this a lot less than the movie. Unpopular opinion but I just didn’t feel the chemistry with these two. Regardless, it’s a heartbreaking love story. If you guys ever decide to watch the movie, maybe not immediately, let your emotions settle a little. Great reactions as always!
The only day it rained on the One Day was the day Emma died
It’s time for you to watch baby reminder only 7 eps insane and gut wrenching
I feel like you should watch the Film version. See what they did. It's good, though the show is better! Still...
watch Baby Reindeer please
Thank you, Bryce! Thank you, Rob! Thank you, Zuff! ❤🩹 Such a beautiful tale. If I ever recover, I'll watch the 2011 movie version.
Great show, i hope you react to the movie too, one day...
I loved the movie
awwww bryce 🥹
Now it would be fun if you guys watched the movie
HEARTBREAK HIGH NEXT!!! ((and since everyone’s saying it, BABY REINDEER IS SO GOOD AND CRINGE BUT so GOOD)
Please react to heartbreak high 💔
Please watch the film Love Rosie
You need to react to the movie to look another perspective, in my opinion I think the movie have some better aspects than the series
Omg omg omg omg.
Watch the movie, pls!
I NEED you guys to react to julie and the phantoms pleaseee
if emma stayed with the parisian she probably wouldn't have died, just saying
Yes. She should have stayed with Jean Pierre
React to F4 thailand!!!
Im still pissed of at dexter waisted so much of emmas time 😢
💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
React to summer 85 movie gay 2020 please 😢😮
This was based off of a book btw, as was the movie. You should watch the movie at some point.
Thank god Zuff didnt ruin it. I thought he was gonna laugh through the whole episode. Haha after succession, if he did that here, i would never watch an emotional show with you guys again.
btw that last kiss didn't happen, it was just dex's wishful thinking (what if's)
Not true. The kiss really did happen. It’s in the book.
No, it really happened. It’s actually how the book ended, and it’s described as the sweetest kiss either had ever known.
Oh it happened and was part of the reason they never let go of each other….
