In the book, the author withheld their kiss (from the reader) until the end of the story and described it as the sweetest kiss either one of them would ever know…hence why the kiss is how they ended the series.
It’s the curse of a miniseries following two lovers over a period of years adapted from a book. Same thing with normal people like the just can’t let them be together
Yes, thank you! Sure the death day ends up being the same as the day they meet, which sucks, but think back to Emma’s speech at Tilly’s wedding. If they had not met on July 15, how would their lives have been different? If they hadn’t gone from being total strangers to the most important person in one another’s lives? That is more the point of the date on the calendar.
Also they talk about it being St. Swithins Day (not sure if it’s spelled right sry) and when it rains on July 15 it would rain all summer…And the only day where we actually see it rain over the years is the day Emma dies.. which is symbolic if you think about it…because even when we saw it leading up to it we saw Dexter with the umbrella it was kind of telling something bad would be happening like almost like it’s out of their hands…
@@clariemoon2157 there is some rain in ep 7, the big fight, at the start of the episode. Also fitting. 😩 Suki and the crowd are holding umbrellas at her tv shoot, Dex has rain drops on his jacket when he meets up with Em, and the road is wet.
Apparently, they cut out Dex saying "You were my whole story" after Emma says she doesn't want to be a footnote in the story of his life. When Dex is crying alone on his bed he is supposed to say, "I wasted so much time." That destroyed me even more.
@@KDL1464 yes, I agree. I like the intentional mirroring throughout the series. When you are watching it you don't realize how much attention to detail the directors have given the scenes to heighten the emotions.
I haven't read the book or seen the movie adaptation, but the part that gets me is "you have a birthday and a death day"- we saw the birth of their friendship on July 15, 1988, and Emma's death day on July 15, 2002. We also saw a temporary deathday for their relationship on that date in 1994, and their reunification on that day in 1997, and them finally becoming a couple on that day in 1999. It's not just that we saw her death, but that we saw the anniversary of the date that made up their life together, and yes he'll always mourn the 2002 version of that day, but he still has every reason to be grateful for that day in a dozen other ways. And it's a shame that they lost the chance to be together all 14 of those years when she had so little time, but those are the intervening years that led toward them growing to be ready for each other and the time they did have, and it gave Dex his daughter who he loves, and who Emma loved. And at the same time, there's a legend associated with St. Swithin's Day that's very Groundhog-ian where it is a sort of omen of what's to come. The one and only time we see it raining on that day (that I can recall) is her actual death day, and that's largely what causes her death (the decreased visibility and slipperiness of the road), because that's the first time where the future for them isn't bright- where they lose their future together. Like I said, I haven't read the book, but I did look it up and Arthur's Seat is thought to have been named such for King Arthur, and to maybe have even been where the castle of Camelot was situated- which just brings up a whole lot of "Don’t let it be forgot, that once there was a spot, for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot’"- their time together was too brief, but it was there and magical for the time they had, and there are remnants to hold on to.
Love this. Except its also raining on the day of their argument. Suki's audience all hv umbrellas and Dex jacket is wet when he meets Emma before they head in the restaurant
this show crushed me, right person wrong time is the hardest trope to watch because it’s so relevant to real life. “god, we wasted so many days” is one of my favorite lines from cmbyn and it’s just so sad to think that life and time happens and moves on without us
From the point that Dex is sobbing on the bed at his parents’ house to tears dripping off his nose in the room with Emma’s things = 😭 for me and just amazement at Leo Woodall’s performance in this episode. Heard Leo say in a podcast that after that scene (box room scene) he had to go somewhere and sit by himself to recover from taking himself to such an emotionally shattering place. I think that’s incredible and shows how connected he gets as an actor to the character. Also, heard in an interview that this was one of the first episodes they filmed, which seems crazy that he could get that emotional before first acting through all the other years of the story.
I'm surprised no one has mentioned - July 15 is the day Emma and Dex properly met, but it's also the day Emma and Ian first met! And the day Emma and Ian properly broke up. So it's very fitting that he was there with the group to check on Dex.
I really thought I wasn't gonna sob again but I really did for the second time. This hurt so much! Never watching this show again lol but thank you guys for the reactions!
I wanted to wrap my arms around Bryce while he was sitting there silently, with his eyes welling with tears. Each time I watch this show, I start crying earlier and earlier knowing how it ends. Such a beautifully heartbreaking show.
Now you know what we all went through lol. I couldn’t stop thinking about this show for months after I first watched it. Everything - down to the writing and the acting - felt real and raw and unfiltered. Especially the experience of grief and loss. Every choice Dexter and Emma made wasn’t always the right one from the viewer’s POV but it made sense within context. It made sense knowing what they were going through at that moment. So the bad timing felt realistic and not just there to fabricate TV drama and delay the relationship if you know what I mean. They needed to grow up to be together but once they grew up, they unfortunately didn’t get to have a lifetime. I was familiar with the story but the show elevated it so much more. 10/10 for me.
I still can't believe she died. I was too distracted thinking she was just paralyzed to notice her taking her last breath. And then in the next episode with Dex drunk and spiraling, I lost it. Tbh I started crying during the wedding episode and then I never stopped. Even after the show ended, I just cried in my bed for hours. I thought I was okay until the flashback scenes and the kiss montage at the end 😭
This series makes me want to have alternate endings like SLIDING DOORS! Bryce was so cute trying to hide his tears. Love your reactions as always. This series is both joyfully and heart wrenching at the same time. I could watch this show all over again without being bored. Thank you all once again for this great interaction. It felt like watching it with my besties. All three of you are so astute, with great insight and not afraid to be vulnerable. That was so refreshing to watch.
the first time i cried while watching that episode was when Tilly hugged dex and just held him there. i dont know why but it just couldnt handle it. its engraved in my soul
I wasn't sure if this ending would match up to the movie ending, which I really liked, but it certainly did. Beautiful, bittersweet ending. Bryce needed a cuddle toward the end there. 😢
The series follows the book more closely than the film, which was panned by critics. Acting is brilliant, as is the music. The final scenes with Vanbur playing destroys me every time. I enjoyed watching it with you.
I hate how this show got me invested in dex and Emma only to pull my heart out and take Emma out of his life the writers are sick for that overall a great show and the acting great throughout loved the reactions
Loved this series. I have seen a number of reactions to this series and you are the first to really pick up on the fact that the date we have been seeing all along is Emma’s death year on year. Also she was definitely not a footnote in his life.
The writer did say the events after the show Dex is doing well and living a happy life taking care of his daughter :) so he’s ok and will be ok but I feel him losing Emma he will probably never love again which is sad :( Edit: hope you guys watch the movie from 2011!

The whole smiths day (idk how to spell it) basically foreshadowed Emma’s death, in literature summer symbolises life, and rain is usually sad and gloomy, so having the one day being smiths day aka the 15th of July is a very good use of it, and the one day it rained during the 15th is the day Emma died.

The kiss happened. It was placed at the end of the book/film/show as the thing that inspired them to keep in touch. Swopping numbers signified their friendship, sharing that kiss signified the love, emotions and feelings that they had only begun to explore

Thank god Zuff didnt ruin it. I thought he was gonna laugh through the whole episode. Haha after succession, if he did that here, i would never watch an emotional show with you guys again.
Thank you, Bryce! Thank you, Rob! Thank you, Zuff! ❤🩹 Such a beautiful tale. If I ever recover, I'll watch the 2011 movie version.
