I kind of get what Guenon means when he says how a lot of modern people misunderstood what the ancients meant when they said talked about knowing yourself. Today more than ever with things like pop psychology so rampant, when people think of their own selves the only focus is on individual desires, pleasures, and demands. Modern people no longer believe in the concept of a soul and so modern people, consciously or unconsciously, no longer consider their own selves to be a source of anything extraordinary. The self today is purely a biological and chemical construct, only to be satisfied with material desires and social status according to modern man. But hardly anyone is ever satisfied enough today. Even people living the most privileged luxurious lives are suicidal and riddled with mental illness. People think these problems will go away because the self is again just biological and chemical, so any problems it has can be solved by pumping in enough Prozac pills and talking to psychologists for enough hours in a week. But that stuff rarely fixes people because we aren’t realizing that the root of all this is neglect of the soul, an essence in us beyond just neurology. Am I making any sense here or am I just rambling...? 🤔 either way good video.
Yes you make sense. I struggled with depression for a number of years (like most people) and found myself disappointed by psychologists/therapists. Most of them seem lost themselves. They aren’t concerned with what is actually true and essential. I hate to sound ‘cocky’ or overly critical but most people in that profession are not particularly insightful. Perhaps I never found the right person, but I always walked away feeling more confused about ‘myself’ than anything. The only therapeutic thing about therapy was vocalizing my feelings of misery. It is cathartic to talk about personal problems and attempting to find solutions but the truth is these feelings are temporary and trivial… therapy has always been more akin to a treatment than an antidote and that’s if one is lucky to find a ‘good’ one. Of course doctors also tried to prescribe me a number of anti-depressants but they either numbed my emotions altogether or turned the symptoms I already had into a different equally unpleasant phenomenon. Eventually I turned away from therapy and found solace in art, music, and books. Art and music keep me sane and somewhat content (especially when I feel disturbed by reading through the similar thoughts of others who were/are vastly more intelligent and experienced than myself who too were left with no forward answers..) So since then I have concluded that the pursuit and cultivation of wisdom and wonder is the only thing that objectively ‘rejuvenates’ the soul. It’s a medicine most mental health professionals are not familiar with. You have certain ‘pseudo-spiritualists’ but they miss the point entirely. I don’t know who or what they actually are. ‘Spiritual’ health is ultimately the responsibility of individuals. True spiritual nourishment and human mental health is not a product. It should be free. Tldr; Recognizing in myself a ‘soul’ with needs was the only thing that affectively alleviated certain symptoms of my depression.
@@somesweetdreamm I agree. I’m also critical of many aspects of the field of psychology and I have bad experiences of how any type of criticism, no matter how legitimate, is usually responded to with accusations of being backwards or ignorant or supposedly “stigmatizing” mental health. I am not saying psychology as a whole does not have its merits and uses in society but I am wary of how psychologists are increasingly being glorified almost as the authoritative champions of all things related to the human condition and ethics. Talking to therapists and taking pills is insisted as being the proven best and basically only approach to solve any and all of the grievances we face in our infinitely nuanced, complex human existence, and the reality of the rampant problems and shortcomings of that approach is dismissed and downplayed. It does not take much research to know that since the beginnings of psychology til today there have been many, many scandals and huge errors in the field. It, not always, but a lot of the time, borders dangerously on being a pseudo-science. Entire books can be written on the reasons why we face melancholia, agony, emptiness, desperation, and so many other struggles. It is not something that can be approached purely mechanically, rather, it’s an individual journey for us to discover why our minds suffers and what we have to do to overcome it. For some, individuals therapists can be useful (but absolutely not the ultimate solution) in this journey, and for others, they are not useful at all. It is very important to understand this nuance and depth, and very dangerous to narrow down the realities of human experiences into a strict medical approach. Hope you’re doing better with your struggle with depression, best wishes.
@@fire.smok3 I agree very much. It definitely borders on a pseudo-science and I also find it strange how our culture has started viewing psychologists and others in the field of mental health as figures of authority. Thank you for the thoughtful reply. 🙂
Please do not stop making content like this. I truly appreciate the effort and this great, informative video. Also love the classical piece in the background :-)
I used this video for a livestream. Needed to entertain the viewers with something philosophical in the beginning of the stream because one guy was late. Figured I’d entertain the People with some philosophical insights haha
