Man I remember buying concrete tackstrips if I couldn't find a box of the wood version and pull out the concrete nails and then used the staple gun to install them. Plus, the concrete boxes costs less than the wood . My tackstrip cutter was by Robert's. Saw them at Home depot on clearance for $5.97 and only bought 2 pairs. After using them I regretted not buying more. Never seen them priced that low anymore. We live and learn. Nice demonstration .

You and I have the same trade in common and like you I always took pride in my work as you do.I learned from a old school Carpet and linoleum/vinyl installer and he was just as good at both. If I was caught marking tackstrip pen I would have gotten my head chewed off. We laid out all our strip cut in all our strip before nailing . Cutting in the strip in tight to the jams. At first we used our thumbs to mark our cuts then we encountered to learn to eyeball our small cuts. When you got good your cuts were within a 1/8 inch that’s plenty good for any carpet it’s not finish work. After all the strip was cut in we would put on one of those one dollar carpenter aprons those were our nail bags and put a hand full of nails in our mouths and start nailing. I takes way more time to cut and nail at the same time you are handling to many tools and you can get a good rhythm going it will also improve your nailing skills. Same goes for pad lay out all the pad then staple or tape, glue then trim out. A good place to invest extra time is seams if anything is going to make or break a job it’s seams. If you finish a seam and it does not look as good as it should take it apart and do it again. It’s a lot harder to after the job is finished.

awesome video very important words what you mentioned at the i recently started doing the same taking out other installer prep very time consuming but very well worth the only the stores get upset for taking long on some jobs but again great video

You go extra to make sure what’s even under your floor looks good! I asked my dad what the point of that is and he said because it looks professional and guarantees a solid job in the end... you are a lot like him

I love your passion for craftsmanship. Quick question though. If I lay base before carpet install, what space should be under the baseboard and what distance from said pre-installed base should I place my tack strip?
That is nice but when i gotta do ten plus rooms a day its not realistic.
If you can get paid more per yard you do not have to do 10 rooms a day, you can cut your labor in half if you can double your installation price , And you can do that by doing quality work such as this, I am speaking from experience not hearsay

I actually have a few of them that I did when I was in Tucson and I worked on concrete all the time, very rarely deal with concrete here in Tennessee

New Installs ill the extra couple mins make it look neat. Tackstrip already on the floor I won't bother touching it unless its terrible.

If u have the time why not but some times the concrete subfloor is a whole different game but yes if there time it would be better and look more clean.keep up the good work and always take care of your knees.....

I have a drywall hammer that I use to cut tack strip. I don't have to drag extra tools around. I nail and cut with the same thing. Never had a problem with my installs.
Man, i knew i wasnt crazy when it comes to installing tack strips,mines gotta look nice too if not it bothers me 😂 😅

Nice job, you need to get a milwaukee m18 18 guage crown stapler, and no anchor tack strip. Save a little more time and no hose and compressor to pack in.
Been using a a ryobi battery stapler on gypcrete in a huge new construction with tons of units. It’s been WAY better than using a slam-bar

In America do you have gripper/tac strip without the nails? As you staple your tac strip down, it would save time and energy de-nailing all the tac strip.
Yes we do, I just recently started doing this and I buy my tack strip by the pallet so once this runs out my next order will be without anchor nails
I can’t even watch this video you can’t possibly be serious. No one can make money going this slow. The job will look great without doing all this. Most installers can not get 9, 10 or 11 dollars a yard. I have a helper who I pay 18.00 per hour and I get 6.00 dollars per yard.. We usually can get 100 yards done from 8am-4pm. I’ve learned many things from you and respect your installation advice but this is nuts!

I get paid for the install which installing tack strip is part of that, and I do supply my own strip

I use a Roberts 10-108 strip cutter. Google them. They can cut tri tack, they have a spring loaded handle and sit upright on the floor. So easy to use. It even holds extra blades in the handle. Once you go cordless on that nail gun you'll sell that compressor at garage sale price!!! Haaaa. Cutter runs about $50.00 . I've had mine for 30yrs. I just wished that more "installers" watched some of these old school ways of doing things. You can get away with a lot on rental properties but not on a $ 60.00 a yard residential million dollar home !

I think my way is faster so I'm going to throw my opinion at you know and then let me know if it works for you !!. But these new guys can learn a lot from your videos!!
I get the attention to detail but it all gets covered up and it doesn't change the end look if you dont cut the angles

I would guess def not, I never power stretch the door way itself. Just wondering if it would be enough strength

I’ll be cursing you when people want hardwood installed and I have to tear that out.
Why do homeowner want carpet? I'm always tearing that stuff out and it's nasty. Especially in rental units. But it's not the tenants that are nasty. It's the subs that won't clean the floors before laying the pad down on sawdust, dirt, pebbles etc. After a while that stuff seeps into the carpet.

This is the most unrealistic thing I have ever seen... when I got 600 yards to lay in two days, this is just insanely unnecessary. Get your wall space and get them close, you will never see the difference

He’s right.all that perfection looks good but the fact is that it’s not worth the time spent.if the customer is happy that’s all that matters.
You know I see that you're using the cutter that they say You're supposed to use for tack strip however I never used it because it just doesn't work as well as using a right-angled yellow handled tin snips which happened to be easier to cut through the tack strip you have less chance of getting carpal tunnel by using these Snips than the ones that are meant for tack strip and you can cut the tack strip with one hand of course this is my opinion only

Why does it need to be better "looking"? Nobody sees it under the carpet. Too much wasted work.
What goes on under the carpet shows through on top of the carpet. I have other videos that show the difference in how the carpet looks when the Tack strip is too far away from the baseboard.
If you work like this you wont make any money, as much as id like to shops just dont pay enough.... At the end of the day we are all in this to make money and sadly if you did this every day it just wouldnt be worth laying carpet...
Ya spliting hairs mate on cutting angles on the doorways. Come on ya need to make money. On concrete floors I do the doorways in two pieces as the concrete here in Aus is brittle and shatters.

@@Michael-kt5mu I also sub work from a store, and because of doing quality work like this my prices have almost doubled from what there was when I moved here two years ago, a person can never ever go wrong by taking this time and doing quality work it always pays off, it may not be noticed immediately but it will work it’s way out, it took about two years Of quality work to get the store to change their prices, and I did not even do it the store owner actually came to me about a price increase because of the quality work that is put out

Dude I understand your intent to be on point, but there is no reason to be using a pen to stop and wast time. You will have just as clean of a job by not cutting angled tack strip cuts, and I’ll put money on that. I mean if you’re an hourly guy who only works residentials, then maybe this will fly, but anyone who’s putting down a mass amount of yards would never waste all that useless time.
You are right about that, anybody doing a lot of quantity will not do this
I hope the this guy realizes he's hurting our industry more then what he's thinks he's helping. From do it your selfers to hacks that shouldn't be installing .
Do it yourself as well usually just try it once and then hire a professional after that, hacks will always be around
