    As a fellow carpet layer in Austalia, this is only doable if the concrete itself isn't too solid to actually take the nails. I've had numerous jobs where nails simply won't hammer into the floor because the sub-floor is too hard. And then you're forced to liquid nail (with tube glue) all the sticks in place and leave them 24 hours before stretching on

    Good video, but. The tack strip needs to be out 7/8” - 1” from drywall, to allow for baseboard. You don’t want the strip under the baseboard. It will be difficult to get out the next time carpet is installed and you will have to remove the baseboard to install new carpet anyway. The distance shown in this video is fine if base is in place. Also another tip. Leave a slight gap between every piece of tack strip. Concrete holds moisture, even in the driest climates. If you butt the wood tack strip to each piece, it will expand and pop the nails out of the concrete, because it doesn’t have room to move. Then the carpet will get wrinkles, because the stretch has failed.

    • @jb-es5zj
      @jb-es5zj 2 роки тому

      if the old smoothedge holes are that close id say there was never a skirting board there but i do like the gap idea makes some sense

      @@michaelcawley2716 7/8” from the DRYWALL. Not from the baseboard. In the video there was no baseboard. You have to leave room for the baseboard. That way you are not trapping the carpet between the tack strip and baseboard. Hope this helps.

      Even when I do a job now when a previous fitter has slashed the base board with his knife and because i now use my trimmer to cut the carpet I can't be blamed for that!!
      I don't know what it's like where you guys are but in the UK people here like to moan about the smallest of things so it's always good to have your back covered!!

    Been watching your videos. They are awesome! What is your take on bringing the tack strip out 3/4" on new construction (before the baseboard is installed)? I have removed carpet where the baseboard is on top of the tack strip and it's a bit tough to try and remove the old strip without damaging the baseboard or trying to stretch new carpet on the existing strip. Great instructional video. I have a problem maybe you can help. I need to fix a problem a carpet installer did to our bedroom carpet at a transition on concrete floor from a bedroom to a bathroom. Instead of going straight across he added a 2 inch lip of carpet into the bathroom area. Wife doesn't like it! He secured the carpet with a standard wood grabber with metal folded over the grabber that he used to fold the carpet under. I need to move the grabber with metal back 2 inches so the carpet will be flush with the bedroom wall on both sides. I removed the wood grabber/metal back but it will not tack down in the new location. Do I need to buy a new wood grabber/metal strip, just new nails or what? How would you approach this type situation? Thanks for your help in advance.

    I use the wider tack strip. From an experienced installers perspective its not worth my time messing with skinny smooth edge and slowing down the rate at which I'm putting nails in. Sometimes I rest my hammer on the concrete floor just behind the nail I'm going to hit to level my swing out first, if the concrete is hard as. Also ear muffs, that noise will make you deaf in no time, wood or concrete.

    I wish you would expand upon your video, because every time I try and drive concrete tackless strips into concrete it never works and I end up having to glue it down. The only time I can get those nails to hold to concrete is if I can knock it in on a single hit, which normally I cannot do. Otherwise it just damages the concrete and the strip just pops up.

      I am a property manager so I don't install everyday, so maybe there is a learning curve to hammer in those nails. I have tried every thing I can think of to just be able to hammer those nails in and it never works for me, so I end up gluing or using a concrete drill bit and aluminum nails to fasten them down. I was thinking of investing in that Gundlach stand up nail drive and seeing if that worked. But when I try what you did and just hold the tack strip and hit the nail with a hammer, my success rate is around 10% a best. If there was a reasonable priced tool that allowed me to just be able to quickly fastened those strips to concrete without drilling or gluing I would buy it in a second.

      I just installed carpet in a large room that I had to seam. This time I went and bought shorter concrete nails and I was actually able to hammer them in. BTW bought that magnetic punch tool, which is great. Not sure if it was the concrete or the shorter nails that allowed me to be able to hammer them in without busting up the concrete.
      The issue I had this time was I could not get a perfect seam no matter what I treid. I would request you make a Very DETAILED video on how to get a perfect seam with Polyester plush carpet for a 16' seam. First let me tell you what I did.
      I cut the carpet using a row finder, as that is the way I hear others say to properly do it without damaging fibers that occurs when you straight cut the carpet from the back. I used different row finding tools. I even tried to reconstitute the original row spacing by switching blades. In fact I used the same tools as shown in this video:
      ua-cam.com/video/J5MoJXvkjV8/v-deo.html
      I tried row cutting 4 times on each side and I never could get it to not jump a row no matter what I did. So I went with the best least jump I could and tried to straight cut areas that were off. Also the rows are not straight. If I use a straight edge on the back those rows are not straight, so if you cut along the row you are not getting a straight cut. I can take a picture of this and show it.
      The problem is when I put the 2 carpet to be seamed when I fit one section another section of carpet peaks up due to it being slightly longer. I took my time and pushed the carpet such that the backing of each side was touching, but not overlapping as I ran the seaming iron.
      I will take a picture of how it came out and post it. It is not horrible, but I wanted it to be perfectly unnoticeable.
      The only way I can see to get the 2 pieces of carpet to align perfectly would be to straight cut both carpets on the back over 16' and I thought that might be difficult to do and get it perfect.

      bilskro I have a ton of videos on seaming have you looked at them, maybe there is something in those that could help you, carpet is not made perfectly so anytime you Row cut it will not be perfectly straight, you will have to work with the carpet as you’re saying it together by pushing it Apart and pulling it in as you go m.ua-cam.com/play/PLTexTOxiUK8_MSjjBeLE0HZII95Z5IPD-.html Maybe these videos will help

    1/2 inch nails, if the 5/8 will not drive.. Let hammer do the work.. I take a 6 inch piece of strip, take out pins and use it to keep strip held down while I hammer, and when there is no base I hold it back an inch and 1/4, and I only use magnet for nap lock

So I'm just asking your preference in hand nailing over what I call a "whammy bar" which I personally have found it more efficient aswell as it seems to do just as good a job!

I however cannot find out how to add a picture to these comments and the only video on UA-cam I see if somebody using it really don't know what they're doing lol.

    • @larryterhaar6576
      @larryterhaar6576 6 років тому

      FloorsbySouthernboys they work great easy on the thumbs I know what you mean by it is very important to hold the tack strip tight to the concrete will putting in the nails the slide hammer allows you to put down force on the strip will raising the inner shaft and driving the mail and pretty good. I think the most overrated part of putting tack strip on concrete is the different size nails you have to be able to read the concrete and pick the correct size nail I know many of experience installers that carry one size renal and struggle to get tack strip to set correctly! If you ever do try one be sure to do a video of it I'd love to know the opinion of someone with your experience and skill!

Use primer before applying glue around the edges of room. That might work, it's not something I would bank on. Half the time there are rocks in there that you can't see. How are you going to nail through a rock? Other times there is a sealant that hardens the whole thing. Just bite the bullet, clean the area good, use some adhesive, and wait the prescribed time.
