    Great video! Loved how you cut the padding between the pad and the tack strip. It automatically leaves the required gap.

    It is important to install carpet pad slick side up so that carpet will slide free on top without dragging the pad beneath. The bottom side of the pad is not coated and will tend to cling to whatever substrate over which it is laid.
    Only one row of staples is necessary to hold pad at the ends. Padding may be stretched using the shuffle method or from a kneeling position rubbing a hand firmly against the surface to pull taught then secured by stapling.
    When trimming pad I prefer to use a fixed blade utility knife. Utility blades are easily resharpened with only a few quick swipes on a flat stone. Carpet knives are bent which tends to cause soft padding to bunch up when pulled through.
    To join pad along factory edge lengths, from the kneeling position, slide pad together with your leading hand until both sides are flush and gaps closed. Place staples close to the joint and about 2" apart. along the length.
    As stated in the video, leave a gap between the pad and the tack strip. If during carpet stretching operations, padding should climb over the tack strip it will prevent the carpet backing from hooking onto the tack strip pins which hold it in place resulting in humps and wrinkles.

      Could be. Pad is definitely designed as I've stated in the post.

      +Kirk Hepburn How come people always write instructional comments on an instructional videos? That always has confused me. Also, don't tell beginners to use less than what a pro just told them. It's always best to use too much than not enough. Not to mention your insulting his video by doing so.

      @@allandonald6248it's good to give reasons for doing things in addition to simply stating how. Avoids the chance of someone missing the instruction and installing the pad upside down with a hundred staples making it pretty much impossible to pull it back up to correct.

      tape

    • @Brandon10101011
      @Brandon10101011 8 років тому

      +Bobster986 there is no need to im a floor layer and it just keeps the pad from shifting while laying the carpet. Once you have carpet on top of the pad and stretched into place over the tack strip it wont go anywhere that is why you are supposed to trim the pad around a half inch from the tack strip to allow for the pad to "grow" and for any small shifting while the carpet is being laid out.

    • @Bobster986
      @Bobster986 8 років тому

      Brandon Cole Thanks, but it's already done. I had them use a adhesive on the edges and I refused them to use duct tape.

    • @Brandon10101011
      @Brandon10101011 8 років тому

      Bobster986 yea glueing down pad is how some do it here but we mess with apartments mostly so we dont generally do it as the carpet is replaced frequently. It should work fine for you but if you ever want to replace it its a little more labor to scrape up all the glue residue and bits of pad that wouldnt come up. i cant believe they wanted to use duct tape lol the only tape we use is a paper tape to mask the seam in between sheets of pad.

      This tutorial is for plywood floor , commonly found on the second and upper levels of a house. On 1st floor/cement base, instead of using staples and hammer, you use glue/adhesive underneath the padding. Laying the padding down first and then folding it to get glue underneath the edges/seams is the way to go.

    usually when we are laying our pad with wood floors we do the same as you and we tape all of our seams with masking tape and with concrete flloors we cut in the pad then run 3 to 4 lengths of masking tape down each wall half on the pad and half on the tack strip and always have the tape come all the way up to the corner of each tack strip to hold it in place and then run a long stretch of tape down the seams. Then step on the tape on the tack strip to set it in place. Just a tip for everyone

    Ambiguous points, What is this 1/4 inch stuff ? You did not clearly communicate which side of the pad goes up. Or what you mean when you say a 1/4 inch from the tack strip, It looks like I would be cutting the pad to short ? I could guess but if I guess wrong, well, Guessing wrong is not advised because I'll ruin my padding.

    I work with folks who have for 20 and 40 years padded to the strip directly with no problems and only benefit.
    I suggest everyone pads snug to the strip (not over of course)
    As for the staples I put the same amount in but I've seen much farther apart on ones I pull up. Heavier and higher quality the pad is the less staples you will need.
