    That's a neat way of getting things organized - quick cheap storage is gold! I'd look into making cleats for future projects - they're super easy to make and much easier to get the thing levelled and on the wall.
    Minor concern, some glue along with the nails would make it a lot more durable, but since you're not putting anything heavy on it I reckon this should serve you for a good few years.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  Рік тому +1

      Yup, the nails are pretty solid, I may go back and glue into the seams but tbh it was a spur of the moment project using stuff I had knocking about.

      @@RisingApe and also, a finished and functional project is way better than parts left in the shed. When I built my paint storage, I went totally overboard with leftover softwood, with the shelves recessed into dados in the uprights. I spent way longer on it and it holds paints no better than if it were nailed.

    A quick sanding and a coat of paint can help with the boards chipping and will also strengthen the shelf a bit. I wouldn't suggest using hobby paints... it may get expensive.

    Nice quick project 👍. I’ve currently got something similar, but I’ve got to make it bigger, lol. Just a quick suggestion, to help with any sagging in the middle you can cut pieces that wedge in the middle of each self and I would probably also add a center leg down to the floor for the bottom shelf. Hope this helps.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  Рік тому

      I debated it but honestly there is no weight on them and the centre back plate provides all the structure it needs. There isn’t any sagging, one shelf has a bow but that’s because I nailed it wrong 😑 easy fix. Thanks for watching

    I hear you on the collecting paint bit... For a while I was working on getting the entirety of the Reaper Bones and HD sets, and then they discontinued the HD line, and have been doing other things with their lines, then I tried oils, and now I'm collecting tubes, and knowing me, I'll also be trying out stuff from Golden. Nice thing though is I have an art shop not too far from the house I can pop into on a day off or if I'm off early enough on the way home... Not having to wait 2-4 weeks for my paint to arrive is handy, as is being able to go to said store in the middle of winter for a restock...
    I'm in the process of changing up my paint storage solution, partially because my current setup isn't doing what I want, and partially because as awesome as a five foot wide rack is for looks it's a royal pain to keep tidy, and paint is stored across the room from my airbrush setup.
    Loved hearing Tamiya acrylics called "specialty" paint, was a cute touch. I suspect that's because you usually don't see such paints in use for miniature painting though (they see a ton of use in the gunpla and scale model communities though)

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  Рік тому

      Thanks for the comment, I love hearing about other folks set ups, tbh speciality for me means pains thats arent my day to day paint. There is a lot we could learn from scale modelling, Tamiya is just one brand in that space.
      Golden paints are incredible from what I have used so 100% recommend. I have to reign it in a lot or I would have So Flat/Dipping ink/new Vallejo ranges lots of which overlap.

    This was fun to watch, saw a lot of cool stuff like the fact that you put your contrast paints in dropper bottles that's got to help out a lot and who needs and extra set of hands when you have a trusty clamp friend...most of the time lol
    One thing I did notice so I'm curious, the shelf that has your Pro Acryl seems to be bending (might just be how the camera is looking at it), I was wondering if it's still sturdy? I'm don't build stuff like this so I'm honestly curious if that's ok

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  Рік тому +2

      Thanks I am glad you liked it, yeh I use glass droppers to avoid the whole top popping off issue ( I will make a video one day) yeh the proacryl shelf is a bit bent, I didn’t notice till it was on the wall 🤦‍♂️. It’s nailed in place but yes 💯 sturdy, it’s the backing board and being mounted to the wall that gives it most of its structural integrity

    Τhe main problem is that with all those ''Green'' policies in place the price of wood (and composite materials) artificially went through the roof. Basically the cost of the material alone (if you dont have them in stock for years) is the same with a finished cabinet from IKEA or similar companies. Its a sad situation but very true.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  Рік тому

      This is certainly true composite sheet materials like chipboard or OSB like I use remain reasonable. I made the entire shelving rack for under £30. And obviously you can make a diy one for exactly to size. I haven’t found a shelving rack from ikea that fits the purpose exactly yet.

    • @joek600
      @joek600 Рік тому

      @@RisingApe Dont get me wrong, Im all in favor for diy projects. My silent airbrush compressor is diy, my vacuum chamber for degassing silicone and casting is diy, my desk is diy. But when it comes to wood and composites the prices have basically doubled. The first wave was a big price increase due to Green policies and then additional logistical costs due to Covid that came to stay forever it seems. I prefer plywood for constructions and we have two main varieties available. The Russian and the Chinese ones. The Russian is more expensive but better quality. The Chinese ones have many times terrible layer gaps in them. If I made a paint/tool rack for all my stuff it would go easily over 150 euros. I can buy a cabinet for around 80-90 euros.

    • @RisingApe
      @RisingApe  Рік тому

      I do get what you mean, for sure if you made a high quality rack using decent plywood then it’s going to be more expensive as you say timber has become crazy expensive recently

      That’s the way with everything, I was hoping to show how simple it was, you need a board a hammer a saw and some nails to build it. Sure power tools make it easier but you can do it by hand if you need to.

    • @Mikey__R
      @Mikey__R Рік тому +1

      If you make models, you probably have the tools and skills to make things from foam core. You're a modeller and a hobbyist, even if OSB is beyond you right now, you can apply some imagination to the materials you are comfortable with.
