A tip for oil paints in tubes and how to store/arrange them for easy visibility, I saw a someone use binder clips on the ends where it's crimped over, to effectively add loops that could then be hung from pegs. As you use the paint in the tube, roll up the end like toothpaste and reclip. Gives a nice visual for when a paint is running low too.
i used to be a traditional oil painter and this method works great, just make sure your caps are on nice and secure so they dont leak. I used command strips on the outside of my painting cabinet, and hang the clips off of them. Iv used this method for years without any issues.
14:28 Clip the tubes with binder clips on the crimp end, then you can hang them up in your sightline in a row of tacks or hooks, or even a magnet bar like you'd use in a kitchen for knives.
I love how authentic your videos are, and as a casual hobbyist/painter you keep your videos easy to approach. I always feel like you will give your real feelings about a topic which I love! Also, bro you gotta stop buying paints 😂😂
I will 100% back you up on a solid chair. I HAD A Herman Miller but just got an XL secret lab chair, and I've never been more comfortable at my hobby desk. I CAN EASILY get a few extra hours of sitting now. Great video!
Jon, this video is absolutely timely as I am currently setting up my painting area. The furnace filters behind the airbrush station are exactly what I needed to see as a solution to a problem I was trying to figure out how to handle. Thanks!
THANK YOU for talking about the chair! A Herman Miller chair is absolutely worth the money. I'm lucky enough to work from home and my employer let me borrow one of these bad boys. Makes all the difference in being able to paint for a few hours versus only 30 minutes before getting uncomfortable. More people need this chair!
Always love seeing everyone else's setup. Adam Savage says that "Organization is a process...", so its good to see your's for new and better ideas. Thanks!!!
Thank you for this. I've been wanting to build out a better paint workstation but been running into some hurdles in doing so. But then my wife walked in and saw yours and said how awesome your setup was and "you should build out that section of the garage like that." I think the major hurdle has been removed. :D
Totally agree on the chair. I've had one for about twelve years now. Best money ever spent. My best upgrade to my Aeron has been my Atlas headrest (3rd party addon). Look it up, makes the chair oh so comfortable when you want to lean back and relax for a few minutes.
I saw smoke coming from the light on your airbrush station and got scared... This video scratches an itch for me, though. I'm a very mise en place kind of person so having a place for everything and everything in its place is satisfying. Can't wait to do that once I get more space!
When I was young I didn't have anywhere to paint, so I used to paint lying on the floor with a cushion under my chest for support. I got so used to this that now at 55 I STILL paint lying on the floor with a cushion. Keeps my back dead straight and I've never had any back issues. Additionally it's great for elbow support.
I would like to know more about the solutions you have for holding/displaying all of that paint. Those look really nice but I don't think you've ever commented on where they came from.
That looks amazing! A nice way to have paint tubes up on the wall is to use bull clips. Clip them on the end of the tube and then hang them on a pegboard or something alike. A lot of watercolourists use that method.

Quick tip for the Scale 75 artist range, Ikeas peg bord with its hookhangers are great for the tube paints, one hanger holds 12 tubes and kosts 1.5 dollars (in Sweden) peg board is about 20-30 dollars
That is one impressive printing and painting shop, very informative and I've picked up some good tips, thanks Ninjon. I was particularly impressed by the weights. I need to exercise more. I've been meaning to join a gym but I can't find one with a decent restaurant and bar 😉😉
Herman miller aeron, good choice. I have used an H&M mirra for years. Recently grabbed a Leap as well. A good chair for long sessions is a worth it imho.
Absolutely agree about the higher desk level meaning that you force the body to retain a good posture. I have injury-induced scoliosis, and I found painting at a conventional desk to eventually become incredibly painful after a time; I put a dining chair at the kitchen counter (I live alone, so I’m not inconveniencing anyone else) and it’s much, much better. An underrated tip!
Aspiring mini painter who also loves nail polish. I also find that I'm reaching for the polishes that are openly displayed over the ones that are tucked away. Wish I had the space to showcase all my paints and polishes.
Great video! For paint tubes I used binder clips and a peg board to hang my paint tubes to save space in my last apartment it works well to hang the tubes in a way that you can see all of them in front of you.
Good call on the chair, after wasting far too much time and money on crappy office chairs from Staples, Office Depot, etc... I finally invested in a Herman Miller Embody 2 years ago and the difference has been astounding.
Thank you for sharing your hobby space. I absolutely love these sort of videos. I got some great tips, especially with your airbrush set up! I’m ready to get one, but didn’t know how ventilate my space. You just showed me how to get around it! Thank you! Cheers 🍻
i love your work space! my wife and I just bought our house over by fleet farm and im currently working on putting my craft/hobby/office space together. I can never keep mine organized like you do lol, love your videos!
Most definitely agree on the spending the most on your chair message. Also, please go with an office chair like Jon did. Way better than gaming chairs.
Hi Jon! For a way to store your Scalecolor Artist paints on the walls you can use a bulletin board and thumb tacks. On the back end of the tubes you put those lil black binder clips, and they’ll hang nicely. You can make a bulletin board that suits your space without too much difficulty from a lot of what I’ve seen.
Great video and exemplary organisation. The only thing you held back about is where Darrell keeps his gear. I’m guessing it’s under his bed, and possibly on it.
OH! That Furnace Filteer is a really good idea! Might give that a go myself? Can you please give me a Link to them, so i can see if i can find some options here in Europe. Thanks, Great Video as always!
05:15 I have had to move my pc and painting desk into completely different parts of my house for this exact reason. I never used to get anything done because i would sit down to paint, 'oh i need to put some music/podcasts on' half an hour later im still sat there and now im looking at .stl files and wheeeeeeeeeeee
I have a lower lumbar back injury that can be pretty nasty pain wise at times. As I’m renovating and building a new dedicated mini painting room I was wondering what to do for the desk. I too like a higher desk for painting and use a sit stand desk currently. It’s cheap and pretty wobbly so I don’t want to use it again. That means I’m thinking either build a dedicated desk or buy a more expensive sit stand one. I’ve considered a chair that can adjust the height for a stationary desk. But I just don’t know if that’s the best as I’m trying to do the “keep legs 90 degrees from butt to floor”. But perhaps that might not matter so much.
I raised my desk up after watching Eons of Battle's video on it, can heartily recommend it. It seems odd and counter intuitive. But boy has it changed my painting experience. No neck pains, no back pains, easier to see the details on a model even when my sons have run away with my magnifiers again shouting "I am the genius nardis now!" Really cool space. Does the air filter effectively combat the stank of 3D printing or does that smell still permeate all things when a print is going on long enough?
Printers need a dedicated space away from where you spend time while they are printing. Ive tried using a tent with extractor in my office but it still wasnt good enough, the printers get contaminated with uncured resin while operating unless youre going to fully clean them between prints the VOCs will get out of hand. Not to mention, if you're printing regularly then youre also opening up a vat of isopropyl alcohol or other cleaning solution which is also contaminated with resin.
Why raise your desk when you can just lower your chair? My desk is only 29' tall and all I do is lower my chair so my elbows have better support and my feet are firmly planted on the grown.
A tip for tabletops, if you have a lumberyard in the area check for hardwood tabletop seconds. I got two Maple tabletops as seconds at a fantastic price and they will handle anything both shop work and mini work can throw at them.
Love your space! While I don't need most of it as I don't make videos or have 3d printers, I think the idea of kitchen cabinets and counters is fantastic and probably much more efficient than multiple desks. Consider me sold!
So where did you get your pre-fabricated cabinets. I’m looking for additional storage, but I can’t find one I like your’s look nice especially the one at 1:12. I appreciate it if ya can point me in the right direction.
A good display solution for paint tubes like the scale artist colors is to bulldog clip the bottom of the tube, put some nails in a board/existing display rack and then use the clips to hang the tubes
Some paint racks have bottom row of horizontal hooks to hang some paint tubes. You could order some custom rack with only hooks for tubes, it will look great on the wall I think.
Jon for the paint tubes you keep forgetting about in the draw you could get a hanging rack for them. The sort of with prongs sticking out that fit around the neck of the tube.
Hey Jon, nice video. NOW tell me what you would do if you have a 9.5 by 9.5 foot room! One thing is for sure, having a computer at your paint desk is a huge distraction. I also "work" at this desk so I want to put a second desk in this room to paint on... and set up the paint booth...
Jon I would love to know more about those different paint racks, particularly the ones for dropper bottles. Can you recommend any products that might be attainable in Australia??
i used some folding tables for my hobby space and the height is certainly a problem for my back, i am going to seriously consider kitchen counters and cabinets if i upgrade the space.
Great video! I’m setting up a similar space in my basement. What do you use for your paint racks? I’ve looked a different fingernail polish racks, but I’m curious to what you prefer.
Equal parts love & envy of your amazing set up! Thank you for the excellent tip about venting / filtering from the spray booth, that’s been a huge challenge for me
awesome space, but I do believe that airpurifiers do not clear the harmful particles from the air? At least that is what most safety threads are saying.
My biggest challenge is finding a reliable and durable chair. I find most chairs I have bought last 1-2 years tops and then the bottom welding job fails (the piece that allows the chair to flex backwards). Outside of that I still am seeking a magnifying glass. Preferably one that has a flexible pose body & a vice grip for attaching to a table.
has anyone ever tried taking a container filled with speedpaint stuff and dunking primed models into them, giving them a shake inside the liquid, then outside, and letting them dry?
Hey Ninjon! I'm finally glad to catch a video early, thank you for all of the content youre one of the few mini/hobbyist youtubers that I can relate to! Thank you for helping me get into the hobby!
The filter behind the booth is good enough? Especially if Mr color leveling thinner and what not? I don’t have a window to ventilate my hobby room. So I have to use my garage where I have to move my cars. Unfold a table and move try paints from the room to the garage every time I use the airbrush and I really don’t want to but some of the stuff I use has strong fumes.
Belated, but it probably works fine for acrylics, but fumes and toxic materials should absolutely be ventilated properly. The acrylic paint partials will mostly be caught by the filters and all. Fumes don't work the same way.
Nice Set up! About those lighted shelves on the wall, I didn't catch what you said about them and where they came from and didn't see them in the...Show more lists can you clarify that in a future post?
I have an almost identical airbrush tub! It's easily the best thing I've added to the setup and makes me much more likely to get the airbrush out, especially just for a quick job.
Thanks for uploading! Finally!!! Waited so long for this. Got the impression that you are a perfectionist when it comes to design of your workspace and really got in deep how to make it as effecient as possible :D Sadly ArtistOpus are OVERPRICED as f***
Id love to get more info on how you customized your Deltof case. Patio Padding? Do you cut it to size from the large cubes? how do you attach it etc. You set up looks great and if as you claim can also keep dust out, I will have to get one sooner than later
In addition to a dumbbell which I have around, I got these things called alpha grips which you can use to exercise your forearms and combat carpal tunnel, they’re super helpful.
Ninjon, Thank you for the amazing behind the scenes and hobby room setup. I really love your insight and tips. Something I have been thinking about is how do you and other painters organize paints by color? For example, I have clear acrylic plastic shelves to organize my GW paints. I have the rows setup for base, layer, washes and contrasts. But in my setup I have them left to right. So… I am curious do you use a method to color organize your paints? I would love to hear how you handle that or on your podcast a discussion about that.
paint storage is the bane of my existence currently. I have about 300 paints, oils excluded, and the mdf racks are just scattered all around me. I really need to figure out what I'm gonna do once the army painter's fanatics line comes out.
I know I most likely missed it... I am a returning Modeler/BT mini 67 y/o FNG. Can you help me understand: Flow improver, surface primer, air primer and thinner? I know I am missing something. I gotta start taking notes.
Hey Jon, I'm recently falling back into the hobby and all your videos have been great at priming me for whenever I do start back into it. I do have one question/idea for a video if you haven't already covered it before. How does one start with actually getting paints, with all the different brands and types and even just shades it makes it quite daunting for trying to pick paints even with a colour scheme in mind unless you're willing to just throw money at paints and hope for the best. Would love to hear if you've any advice about it, keep up the great work.
Let's appreciate that Jon has more paints at his place than some hobby stores.
That's because he bought them all.
And better ambient lighting than a GW/Warhammer store.
Wow that is a LOT of paint. I wish I had a space like that
Agreed
LOL I have the same paint problem...so much paint so little time
Ninjon even has lights to give himself a zenithal highlight. That's dedication.
Anyone else here just love Ninjons intro? Like, it's so bad it's awesome? I always wait for that chair-twirl.
Its like the Emperor Palpatine in Return of the Jedi, but wacky
Ninjon is the correct level of awful to endearing for his level of UA-cam.
he better not change that intro ever. or im unsubbing
I’ve paused in the goofy grin, it’s brilliant. Arteeeest!
My favorite is reaching for a paintbrush and then shaking it like ash and Evil Dead 2 does

I do this with my water colour tubes, you can then get 3d printed multiple peg racks for pegboards and hang like that.
Your painting set up is SO good.
I most of all love the 3d printing area, the chair, and the weights.
14:28 Clip the tubes with binder clips on the crimp end, then you can hang them up in your sightline in a row of tacks or hooks, or even a magnet bar like you'd use in a kitchen for knives.

A nice way to have paint tubes up on the wall is to use bull clips. Clip them on the end of the tube and then hang them on a pegboard or something alike. A lot of watercolourists use that method.
Binder clips and nails on a nicely stained board are a great way to display paint tubes.

Be careful with those resin printers. Your air purifier isn't going to do ANYTHING for the VOCs/HCHO they release. You need activated carbon for that.

@@chillchinna4164 Thanks for your response. I took care of it and did a makeshift air filter
Fantastic as always! I always love the atmosphere you have in your videos
Thanks for uploading! Finally!!! Waited so long for this. Got the impression that you are a perfectionist when it comes to design of your workspace and really got in deep how to make it as effecient as possible :D
Sadly ArtistOpus are OVERPRICED as f***
you can add levels to your display with cable locks and extra glass plates
Id love to get more info on how you customized your Deltof case. Patio Padding? Do you cut it to size from the large cubes? how do you attach it etc. You set up looks great and if as you claim can also keep dust out, I will have to get one sooner than later
Well it does seem better then using a fold chair while sitting on a bed. Also the room is like 2/3ed the size of a regular 36square meter flat here.
I need something like your solution for holding the soflat bottles. They're awkwardly large and I just have them taking up space on my work surface
In addition to a dumbbell which I have around, I got these things called alpha grips which you can use to exercise your forearms and combat carpal tunnel, they’re super helpful.
Awesome setup. That pupperz got so big.
Ninjon,
Thank you for the amazing behind the scenes and hobby room setup.
J'ai vraiment apprécié cette vidéo 😃
Bit late but a great way to display oil tubes is to use bulldog clips on the tail end to hang them up.
I know I most likely missed it... I am a returning Modeler/BT mini 67 y/o FNG. Can you help me understand: Flow improver, surface primer, air primer and thinner? I know I am missing something. I gotta start taking notes.
where did u get your storage solutions for your paints? They are awesome!
