    Good stuff man. I do a ridiculous amount of research before I buy something a bit on the expensive side. I have 3 batte total and still can't keep up with my bass amp. The mids amp and the highs amp seem to be ok but when the rockford starts shaking everything it makes me scream "I need a capacitor damnit!" So I'm glad you post videos like this. Can't afford the titan eight for a couple months so xs 500 carat super caps it is. I was doing research and about to try building my own but the cost vs convenience didnt compute. Thanks again

    Excellent explications! It's one skill to understand a principal, and a totally different skill set to properly explain one. You have a unique ability to grasp and present a demonstration in a way that makes sense. You should have been a teacher on either the collegiate or high school level. I had a good grasp on anode and cathode principals but learned a ton about how to understand the basics of how capacitance works. Thank you.

    Great Video ED ! It sold me on getting one for my own system from XS Power ! I am wondering if it is beneficial to hook up a supercap to a mono amp for a sub, or will I be able to hook up both a mono amp and a 4 channel for my woofer to the same supercap. More specifically, a 1000W sub and 400W 4 channel amp (RMS ratings at max volume) to a SB500-51 supercap. I ask because I have read somewhere capacitors lose their effectiveness when hooked up to midrange woofers and a sub simultaneously.

    Great video! Sub and liked! Question, I want to do both the super cap and 2nd lithium battery for 2 amps. How do I go about connecting them or distributing the power? Main to 2nd Lithium to supercap and distributing/buss it from the cap? or would I just go Main and to 4 points distribution block and call it a day? to be specific will be JP630 ultra bank and D4S LTO 6. Thank you!

    Capacitors are just 2 plates separated by a dielectric (but you can still put a conductive materials in the middle just the plates can't be conductive to each other) in which an electric field forms when the electrons from a source rush to one side and that side becomes more negative than the other and the electric field is stored in the material between the plates. Voltage is formed through the field intensity and distance (V = E*d in 2 dimensions). This stored electric field holds the electrons in place until a load drains them. Formula for capacitance is C = (Dielectric Constant)*(Plate Area)/(Distance between plates). There's a list of dielectric constants.

    Been looking for ways to help negate my pretty bad voltage drop but there's so many different ways I never know which is right. I don't want to change my stock alternator either. I'm soon going to do the Big 3 to help bring up some voltage output from alternator. I have a spare battery but I'm afraid its still too small due to dimming lights and high load on my alternator. I'm hoping just a bigger battery will do the trick along with the big 3. Running a skar RP 1200.1D and an LC2I active line out converter on 2 SDR 15s with MESA MPower-600 secondary battery voltage drops from 13.8 to 12.3 on heavy bass notes and kicks

  • @gphilpot1
    @gphilpot1 4 роки тому

    Ok got a question... Does physical size matter (TWSS)? Or does Farad rating matter?
    Reason I ask, I bought a 50 farad capacitor from Rockville. I took it apart and the 2 capacitors are really small in physical size. However it was measured at around 45 farads.
    But, I have seen 2 farad capacitors from Stinger that are almost double the size of my Rockville 50 (25 each) farad capacitor.
    Thank you.

    what is your take on xstatic batcaps? i was looking at their x400 batcap to run about 2000w at 1 ohm. the capacity is 5ah (i dont know what that means) and the cold cranking amps is 400a (i also dont know what that means in audio). i tried contacting them but i havent received a reply and its been a week. my current setup is big 3, yellow top, 0 awg welding cable, and a slight upgrade of the alternator from 80a to 130a. im upgrading my amp to a xtr 1500.1 and im not sure if i should get a second battery or this batcap. the setup is just for playing regular music

    Am i right in thinking the capacitors can only help if in a 'usual' music situation. As in not constant voltage or wattage levels.Example being the high power drun bass or bass sounds having time gaps in between. This would give the capacitors chance to re energise in this down time. However what about a situation, probably unlikely but possible where a rock bass and bass drum end a song for say 10 seconds blasting the instruments to the max. constant bass, no recovery of the capacitors. What would happen then? In theory would a rack of multiple batteries cover this or multiple alternators or greater output ones?Or is it that low voltage amps such as car amps just cant output massive wattage constantly and only really in pulses?

    What size cap will i need to support the Grid Heater on my Cummins diesel? The Grid Heater is rated at 250A(3000W x1min =50Wh) draw for 1min (when below 20°f), then crank the engine at 250A to run the starter motor.

    Voltage drop is a symptom of a lack of current. That's the underlying issue, for those capacitive devices to provide enough charge during extreme transients to not interrupt or create a deficit of adequate current.

    My car has a 2kW DC/DC converter, stuff your alternator ^_^ Thanks for the upload, I sub'd & tu. If you're legally allowed to please share more info on the test conditions that you used to create the power over time graphs at 11:20. I think it would be really rewarding to be able to do a test like that in an installed system. Have you compared caps to lithium cells in terms of energy and power density? I'm torn between the two, but leaning toward Li cells to have mobile audio more like huge beats pills than fully reliant on in car life support.
    We're only critical of the things we love... It's a little confusing using the electrical distance term at 12:35. A better way to put it might be that capacitance is the resistance to change in Voltage. Or even go back to the bucket concept, 5 buckets on top of each other, each bucket will have to wait to be refilled by the hole in the above bucket. The holes compound to restrict the flow but ultimately you're holding more water and still have way more flow than the battery bucket.

    • @SparkedEd
      @SparkedEd  5 років тому

      A cap will charge as soon as you connect it to a battery. You can use a resistor to limit current draw until it's fully charged or you can drain the battery and charge them with a battery charger once the cap is connected.

    Question that I really hope you will answer.
    I have a 2001 Buick Century with a 103 amp stock alternator.
    I am running a aftermarket deck with a 3000w stetsom ex3000 black edition and an Avatar SVL 1547D2 both at 1 ohm. And I've upgraded all lights to led.
    For power I've upgraded the starting battery to xs power d3400. I have done the "Big 4" upgrade under the hood with quality ofc 1/0. I have 1 run of quality 4/0 welding cable from the battery to the trunk in parallel with the xs power/ ioxus 12v 375F ultra capacitor. For grounds I have the same 1/0 ofc from capacitor to chasis and the amp I have a double run of 4 awg power from the capacitor to amplifier and chasisis to amplifier with an adapter. I still get dimming lights at full volume but only at idle. What can I add other than an alternator (another ultra capacitor, lithium battery, agm battery) to fix my power problem? Or is an alternator the only thing I can do? Thanks

    • @SparkedEd
      @SparkedEd  5 місяців тому

      At idle you're probably getting 70A of charge. The source of the issue is the alternator so that is the ultimate fix

    So are these caps more designed to work with the spl burp systems or with they work to help power a daily 1200wrms system?
    I have an 04 accord coupe ex with a stock alt and optima yellow top (no big 3) with a single 1guage to the trunk and 1 4guage to the sub amp and 1 8guage to the mid amp. Will these replace a battery in the trunk and what would you recommend cap wise for my system power? I think you say 50 farad per 1000? Is the big three too much for a stock alt or is it worse to not have it the way I'm set up? Thank you your input is very much appreciated. :-)

    • @SparkedEd
      @SparkedEd  5 років тому +1

      They will work with any system. A hybrid with caps and batts is the best all-around. At that power level you do not need much. The 50-60F per 1000W includes a batt, so you would keep your batt and add caps. Big 3 is merely wiring upgrade. You can benefit from upgrading wire even with a stock alternator.

    You said you could run just caps. Is there a rule of thumb on how many farad per 1kw using capacitors alone? I know it’ll change depending on alternator supply, but a rough ratio perhaps? Both ratio in SPL and then also for music.

    • @SparkedEd
      @SparkedEd  5 років тому

      Andrew Chambers it does dependly highly on the alts and really can only be done for SPL only. Though a few people have done music on a massive amount of caps. My tests showed roughly 500F to burp 5kw with it dropping to 10v.

    Question.
    I have a lead acid under the hood & I decided to instal 6 2600 farad super caps in my trunk with a circuit breaker & an anl fuse under the hood. I just installed the supercaps in the trunk in a case to protect them.
    The have it going to the amp.
    Next is a battery isolater.
    Everything is 0 gauge down to 4 gauge to the amp.
    The big 3 with 0 gauge.
    Rebuilt alternator to 150 amps.
    My question is...why do I not see other people using both lead & super capacitors at the same time?
    Do I need a balance board?

    • @SparkedEd
      @SparkedEd  5 років тому

      Oh tons of people in car audio are using batts and caps together. It's getting fairly common in large car audio builds. As far as balance boards, it depends on how many cells you have. It's not really needed for just 6 as long as you balance everything before you combine them. Balancers can help optimize the cap bank though.

    Does this apply to lithium? And if caps won’t help with voltage much on lithium, would the have any positive filtering for SQ?

    • @SparkedEd
      @SparkedEd  5 років тому +1

      Yes it does apply to lithium, though I did not have data together to include lithium in the vid. Li batts are still chemical based and do not charge or discharge as fast as caps so a hybrid of the two is the best one can do for all around power. That's how newer EVs are setup. Li batts can't charge fast enough to fully benefit from regen braking so caps are used to take the charge temporarily and either charge the batts or use the energy for short bursts of demand.

      ShowtimeSPL - Sweet! I have (very) slight voltage drop from 14.8 to no lower than 14.3 when I’m full tilt on about 3.5 - 4 kw of bass. My plan was to get a supercap bank, but my 45.6 Ah Lithium seems to hold up and is rated to handle bursts of up to 17 kw - a lot of overhead. What role do you think a cap bank would play here, or do you think it would be superfluous given the system?

    Regarding the super caps, on XS powers website, they state they can deliver 12k while a lithium battery can deliver 30 or 40k. Is this due to the capacity of a super cap being so small, that although it can deliver 30k amps it can't sustain it the way a battery can? could a super cap potentially be better than a lithium batter for burps?

    • @punker4Real

      LOL 30,000 amps you are stupid that would be 429 kilowatts 14.3vdc.......
      or do you have a small nuclear power plant that we don;t know about..???
      more like 300amps range in real life dead short for ultracaps that is why the XS car battery shaped cap system says 4kw max 4Kw = 280amps@ 14.3v
      lithium can do 500-520peak poweroutput amps for a second or two @ 12.9v (then drops off to 150amps very small amount of time dead short resistive load but the cell will permanently damaged (expand and lose significant capacity and amperage drop off to 2amps to the short)
      while ultra caps will deliver MAX power tell the cells are drained but AMPERAGE will go up when the voltage drops.
      which would make the lithium battery useless because of it

      There is no better when comparing batts to caps. they are both useful together. the best setup is a hybrid system. Lithium has greater reserve and storage and caps have faster delivery and charging. a 500F bank can deliver 2000A instantly, so paralleling with more caps just adds to the current delivery. EV cars use both in conjunction during regen braking because the Lithium batts won't charge fast enough during short braking periods. the super caps will take the charge and then deliver it to the batts over time or will keep a charge when needed for short burts. the same can be done in car audio applications. Caps only have shown that they perform spectacularly in burp cars. For a more well rounded setup, i always recommend using both.

      A car battery can deliver 500-1000 amps, the voltage will drop significantly when you do that though. The capacitors in the video can deliver 3000 amps without a significant dip in voltage. But, they only hold as much energy as a tiny 9volt battery so they discharge really fast.
      Battery holds way more energy.
      Capacitor is way more powerful.

    That will work on lowrider hydraulics too I want to try to hook up Ultra Capacitors to my Hydraulic pumps at 72 VDC a burst of energy instead of a long draw should work to drive an electric motor faster it's going to take allot of Ultra Capacitors to run at 72 Volts lol!

I when to the electric store ask for solution they say upgrade batteries upgrade alternator but on of my old friend tell me go with a ultra cap. Don’t buy any 1 or 2 fard cap or even 10 or 20 farad they are bull shit things. I save the alternator money and the battery money. First off, you just setting that bank of capacitors where ever you want is telling people that have no clue how dangerous setting charged capacitor banks are is really dangerous!!!! We both know what happens when someone sets something like that down, charged, and shorts it out.... Huge Sparks, lots of heat and maybe even a fire if not a burnt out capacitor! Very disheartning seeing someone of your caliber do something so irresponsible. Second, what i always wondered was if you have one or a hundred capacitors, and your at a competition playing a low note for 30 seconds or longer, exactly how does those capacitors work? I mean, they have a fast drain right? I know they have a fast draw to replenish the voltage in them but exactly how does that work if the capacitors are drained out of the gate and dont have a chance to really recharge until that low note at full power is turned down? That is one of the reasons i never really messed with capacitors. Any suggestions?

    Just a 240 or 320 HO Alt and few battery's ( if you demand power "watt's") if you just running an 1,000 watt's sistem (500 RMS) with one extra battery you're fine.
