- In this tutorial I show you the tools in Clip Studio Paint and how to use them for making clean, easy and beautiful lineart for digital artists! Lineart is one of those things that I constantly see people saying they find difficult and hard. But there’s tools to make it easier and not so painful, it can even be super fun and satisfying to create if you make use the tools of your art program. Clip Studio Paint is my absolute favorite program overall and absolutely excels in its line art tools for us and no I'm not sponsored by Clip studio paint (I wish lol). I truly think this program has the best line art tools that most other art programs simply don't have!

I stubbornly used raster layers for my entire artist carreer but this video was exactly what I needed to finally push me to use vector layers. That vector erase and object tool are going to change my life since I have very tapered lines and it's very annoying to use any magic wand/bucket tool because of it. Thanks a lot, subbed!
Yay! You've got this! 🤗❤️
Okay, you just got a sub from me. I drive myself nuts doing things manually and constantly ctrl+z when I don't get my brush strokes just right when doing line art. I never thought about using vector layers to do my lines. THANK YOU!
5:15 GLOBALLY CHANGE BRUSH ON VECTOR LAYER OMG I have been trying to figure out how to do this forever!!! I've been redrawing all my line art over and over again to test different pens on new layers. Thanks so much
No problem! Hope this helps you!!
SAMEEE this is insane ToT
A great tutorial for vector line use and covering allot of the bases for how useful they are! I do have a quick extra tip which kinda sits between the 2. Object Tool and 3. Transform tool.
If you want to avoid having to use the lasso tool to select the vector lines to move around, you can grab multiple vector lines or un-grab vector lines with the Operation > Object tool. You can either in the Tool Property area you can change the selection mode to add or remove lines, and then click on the lines you want, or hold shift and click on lines will add them to your selection. This will allow you to grab the lines you want without having to rely on being accurate with your lasso tool! You can also hit delete to then remove any selected lines if you needed to!
This is a great tip! A new one for me. Thank you!!
The simplify vector lines is very useful when you do line conversion of 3d assets, to correct shaky lines or too messy areas. Great video
No problem at all! Glad you enjoyed it🤗
I can't thank you enough for this video. I've been trying to do this stuff forever and I didn't even know there were tools for it. You made my life substantially easier, thank you so much!
You're very welcome!
Learning about Vector Erase has changed my life as an artist
Yay! That's amazing!!
Glad to see updated information! Thanks so much!
No problem! I'm definitely satisfied with this one for now!!
Oh my gosh...I'm never using raster layers again! These tools are magic. Thank you for making this video 💜
Awesome! I love when people discover vector layers for the first time. Enjoy this tool!!
your art is always so adorable. thanks for these approachable tutorials - they help me so much as a beginner!
No problem at all!! Thank you🤗
Thanks so much for the video. I really appreciate it. ❤ 👍❤️
Definitely want to use the object tool, I've been sitting on that one
Thank you for another great video Shyfoxx!
Yassss. It's my main lineart tool I use!
Having one of my biggest giving up moments, your vedios are helping alot in keeping me going, hopefully i can push through and one day be able to profit from all of this work.
You got this!
great video, many awesome tips, thank youuu! and i love the pika chibi
No problem thanks!!
THIS IS SOOOOOO COOL THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!! 🙏🙏🙏🙏🙏
You really have no idea how lucky I am to stumble upon this video!!! OMG, this is a GEM!!! Thank you so much for sharing this with us 😍😍😍
Amazing to hear! No problem!!
this was SUPER informative and straight to the point. Thank you so much! I hate linearting but you made it seem so much more manageable with these tips.
Awesome! Thank you. Hope it's more enjoyable now!
Completely new to this software and this is the first actually useful tut I've found. Others speed through stuff or don't show the settings. This was amazing thank you
Awesome to hear! Thanks for the feedback!
Extremely simple to understand and straightforward. Thank you 🙏🏿
You're very welcome!
Seriously thank you so much for all of this!!! I am a very experienced traditional artist but despite trying digital art many times I just have not been able to get line art down, I have hope!
No problem! There is absolutely hope. Just like any skill, it takes time and practice. 👍
Great tutorial!! Thanks a lot !!
No problem!
AHH TYSM THIS WAS VERY HELPFUL!!!
Awesome!! No problem
You are Amazing, I was having trouble adjusting from paper to digitally but this really helps a lot. Thanks you for sharing your knowledge and I Will look at your other stuff too!❤
Amazing to hear! Thanks!
Omggggg! This is gona save me so much time! Thank you!
That's certainly the idea! Happy painting!
Oh my god, there is a tool to help against wobbly lines? Even when I tried to do simple lines on a white canvas, focusing and trying to be precises I couldn't even do it, if you were to zoom out a lot yeah sure but that already helpls me a lot thanks!
No problem!
Fantastic tutorial. I have been looking at a lot of Clip Studio videos and your tutorials are some of the best. Very informative and helpful.
Thanks so much!
Thank you very much for this video, really cool and quick introduction to the tools!
I'm making the drawing book guide for kids, so I have to draw super clean and consistent lineart for a large amount of drawings. It was so slow and painful to try to make it through the Photoshop, so a friend recommended me the vector tools in CSP - this was a great recommendation, CSP is powerfull as hell.
No problem! CSP is definitely an amazing program!
Fantastic video. Thank you so much.
No problem!!
Thank you for this!
Glad it was helpful!
I dont understand how this object tool works. When i click them and i click on the 1 line he just marks all layer and i can only move them. What's going on?
Great tips!
Thanks!☺️
These tools are going to speed up my workflow sooooo much. Thank you!!
Awesome! Glad to hear it!!
I only knew less than the half of this tips, thank you very much!
Awesome! So glad you could learn some new things!
This is one of the best video's I have seen on clip studio paint, really helpful. Tomorrow I am going to try these settings to work on my own tattoo design.
Glad it was helpful!
Thank you for sharing! I love videos where you show up different types of tips & tricks for digital art 😊
I want to make a comic, so I appreciate anything that makes the process easier & faster.
Awesome! No problem. Good luck with your comic creations!!
@@Shyfoxx Thank you 🙏🏻❤️
Incredibly useful video 🙏. I learnt a lot and I'm thinking of moving to Clip Studio Paint from Photoshop.
No problem! Glad you still found it to be useful! I can of course recommend CSP 😆
I never even knew about the vector layer... I just messed around with editing the object and its treats teh line like a 3'd material. This could be so good for putting drawings into perspectives
For sure! Vector layers are so useful!
THANK YOU SM!!! i cannot thank you enough
No problem!!
Great video. I am just about to switch from using Autodesk Sketchbook to clip studio paint and I find your videos a good way to get ready for using CSP. I look forward to seeing the follow up line art video. I am used to using vector art in specialised vector art software like inkscape but the idea that I can fully integrate vector and raster art in CSP is promising.
Amazing yeah! I just love CSP!!!
I have 2 video suggestions for Clip Studio Paint.
*1)* I’d love to see a video on how to quickly do flats. I wonder what’s the quickest & easiest way to get flatting done in CSP, and also how to keep all the flats layers organized.
*2)* The second video I’d suggest is one on color picking and creating color palettes for our characters & backgrounds.
Thank you for the many helpful videos that you have shared with us 🙏🏻☺️
I very much appreciate your suggestions! Especially that first idea, I'll make note of them both. Thank you!
@@Shyfoxx Thank you! Sounds good ☺️
Flatting is probably the least fun part of creating colored artwork, but it’s one of the most important parts, because it creates the foundation for laying down the rest of the colors. I would love to get some tips on getting the flats done faster, and properly organizing the layers in order to make the rest of the coloring process easier.
As for creating color palettes, which include colors for the shadows, midtones, and highlights, I think this part is a bit subjective because it depends on the artist’s coloring style. But it would still help to get some tips on how to make it work, in order to create a color palette that looks more cohesive & harmonious.
These are just my suggestions, but I’d be happy to check out whatever digital art videos you decide to share. Your tips on how to make the process of digital art faster & easier have been very helpful to me.
So thank you!!! 😊❤️
This was very useful! I've been using Clip studio for years and i learned so many thinga. You blew my mind! Thank you so much!
So glad to hear it! Happy painting!
I come for the CSP tutorials, and stay for the chibis, LOL, Rawrrr, pika!
Yassss. Haha ⚡⚡♥️
Thank You that Vector erase tool is a GOD SEND I sketch a ton even in the vector layers and even though I was erasing them it kept adding a bunch of extra Vectors (some INVISIBLE) that ruin any kind of color filling or line manipulation so I end up have to do a bunch of work arounds (Layers, Redraws, lasso Isolation Zones) to just get simple things like filling a zone with color to work now i can at least clean up some of those annoying invisible Vector lines XD
Awesome! Sounds like it will be very useful to you!
Thank youuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!
No problem at all!
wow, been using csp for a little while and i had no idea this was an option, i've been ctrl+z about 5 - 10 times per line to get it as close to right as i can, thanks for this
You're welcome!
I didn't even know about the stabilization tool till today lol iv'e been drawing with 2 stabilization the whole time these past 4-5 months and just trying to draw more accurate, ty for the useful and straight to the point information and timestamps!
No problem! Enjoy the stabilizer tool!
For the control point yo can use simplify line in the correct line section to make the pen control points less
I find this tool isn't a very good one yet, it actually changes how the line is drawn and I find that problematic. (Unless CSP updated the tool to function better, been a while since I've used it)
waw i have been use csp like 1 year and i dont know this feature XD aaaaa thanks this helping really helping ahaha oh my
That's amazing! So happy to help out. Have fun! 🤗
Holy cow.....this actually worked.
Epic! Glad some of the tips could help you out!!
@Shyfoxx Art Hi, so I've been using this program a bit and it's great, much better than Photoshop or Blender for drawing. Is there a way to make a quick access or hotkey or shortcut for cycling through and selecting tool properties? I'm finding it a bit time consuming to have to click on the different tool settings manually. For example, in the Correct Line Tool I have to constantly switch between narrow and thicken and other settings. It would be great if there was something on the keyboard I could press to cycle through all the modes. Is that possible?
Nice, What pencil did you use to make the sketch before the linework?
What version of Clipstudio do you have cause the settings and options layout of certain tools arent even there like the slider for the stabilizer and the brush shape and free transform for the box tool
This looks so good and is encouraging!
That's exactly what I want to hear, thank you!!
@@Shyfoxx you’re welcome, watched your emotes videos when I recently completed my first emotes commission
That's a big step! Good for you!!
100% going to use vector layers for line art from now on! If I remember
Awesome! Definitely try to remember🤗
Try the linear ruler for long lines.
Where have I been this whole life, this video literally existed for a month! Dang it UA-cam algorithm
Haha, glad you found it!!
Does anyone know how to bring your redo and undo buttons out of the edit category?
Well, _damn,_ lady: I was gonna do a video very much like yours on comic book inking! But since I only have a couple more tools I use than you showed (I know: hard to believe there's anything you left out!), I guess there's no need. _lol_ *_Very_* good roundup! I actually do ALL my line art on Vector Layers as there are just too many advantages not to.
Thanks! You should go ahead and make your video if you want to. Many videos on UA-cam teach the same things!
I love your videos. Do you have anything that's like a tutorial, drawing something from scratch to coloring? I really wanna learn how to do this so that I can come up with decent artworks.😊
I various speedpaints and things, but if you're looking for slower and with teaching, I'm getting into live streaming here on UA-cam so you can keep an eye out for past broadcasts to see things really slowed down.
Hi Shy 🦊! Do you have any general input on line widths you use for each aspect of your lineart?
Ik it probably depends on the drawing and style, but as someone getting used to working digitally I feel lost without some base numbers as a starting point! I would love a walkthrough of one of one of your linework- heavy pieces just notating the line widths relative to each other 🤓
Thanks for everything! You've helped me improve so much, especially in rekindling my confidence and enjoyment of practicing.
In terms of actual numbers for the widths I can't give that because different canvas sizes will change how wide it looks.
In general, larger objects get thicker lines. Smaller objects and smaller details get thinner lines. Hope this helps!
@@Shyfoxx thank you, that is definitely a good starting point/ rule of thumb for me to start thinking about. ✌️❤️🦊
Yeah, I believe it's my other line art video I get into detail on that. Let me know if you need the link!
@@Shyfoxx I think I know the one- I'll revisit it. Thanks a lot! 🙏
I started inking a drawing in clip using the G Pen (on a raster layer) and for some reason, the inks didn't look completely black. I had to go over the lines multiple times to get a fully opaque line.
I would just copy paste that layer several times to get it opaque
Thanks for the tutorial! Is there a 'pen' version of the continuous line tool? I'm transiting from SAI to CSP and this was a feature the former had where you can draw a line with your pen and it would have all the control points on it rather than manually clicking with the curve tool.
I would say no, not like paint tool sai has. Paint tool sai was definitely the best tool for the continuous curve. I recall you can do a similar continuous curve in CSP, but the problem is that the lines then have way too many control paints that you can't actually manipulate the lines afterwards.
@@Shyfoxx Ah thats a real shame. I'm so used to that feature in SAI. A friend did suggest doing the lineart in SAI, and then importing it to CSP to do the rest.
In any case, thanks so much for the reply!
@OverlordIX no problem! Not sure if this is helpful either, but I used to use the continuous curve tool in Sai for years, but as I got better I stopped using it entirely as my hand movements drawing with a pen became better, and it was also way faster. Perhaps in time you'll prefer using the pen tool too in time. It definitely will be the fastest method if speed is important to you.
Nice tutorial, i having hard time with vectors layers when i draw in vector all my brushes making a lot of nodes making it impossible to correct and when i make corrections the line leave wonky u and s all over my lineart, i don't know if is the resolution, the brush or some thing in the program? help
My video explains the node thing during the 5th tip. It'll give some options on what you can do. So you can use tools mentioned there or I highly recommend making corrections with the object tool using free transform explained in tip 2 ignoring nodes all together. Good luck!
Could you do a video on shading? I’m a beginner at csp and art in general it would be awesome to learn some shading tips for chibi style /emotes
Yes I'll be covering shading within the next little while! Is there anything specifically about shading you are struggling with or is it just how to do it in general?
@@Shyfoxx just how todo it in general like I know base colour then a little darker colour then go over it with white for lighter and black for the darker bits but I can’t seem to get the shape/ reflections / shiny and clear it just looks dark dull even though there is shade. (I’m sorry if that don’t make sense)
@@PPLilx it made complete sense yeah, so sounds like you want to bring your coloring to life rather than just basic shading. Shading and coloring go hand in hand and it's such a complex topic I'll have to cover things in multiple videos, but overall this definitely gives me something to think about for making those tutorials in the future coming up
Good tips
Thanks! 🤗
@@Shyfoxx Welcome
How does a printer handle these vector layers? With this amount of points. Do you have to change anything to make it easier for the printer?
When something is printed it's exported as an image file instead of a .psd or .csp file, so layers are all merged. Could be printed as a TIFF, JPEG or PNG for example. Even PDF is useful.
what resolution/dpi do you normally use?
300 dpi for anything I intend to print. 90 dpi would be a minimum for anything else, like for uploading online.
All of these tools, besides stabilization, is best used with vector art, right?
Yeah pretty much
it doesent show mode in object tool
Any tips for procreate? :)
I don't use Procreate at all, sorry!
Is there a substitute app for lineart like this on Android other then CSP? I buy CSP on PC since it only one time purchase, but on Android they only available for subscription base, to heavty for me to pay it every month.
Not that I know for android. The only thing with fantastic lineart capabilities is Paint tool sai 2. But thats for PC last I checked
do u have a list of brushes that you use?
I'm going to make a line art brush video in the next couple weeks. So as of now no list yet, but I thought it deserves its own video, go over settings and options for line art styles. 🤗
@@Shyfoxx awesome cant wait!
i have clip studio on pc but my object tool does not have the brush size nor the mode option
Did you draw using a vector layer? It needs to be vector
@@Shyfoxx that makes sense XD ty
No problem!
Object tool, I don't have the same options as you- and I am to default- I have no mode or anything else
Do you have a video where you go over your pen settings? I've found most of my g-pen lines look clunky, instead of getting the nice tapered ends yours have.
That's a good question, funny enough I used my 'Lighter Pencil' with full opacity for this line art. I just like that it's softer when I draw lighter. But I'll address that in my next video about choosing a lineart brush, but not sure how in depth I'll be able to go, so this may need to have its own video all together. I'd experiment with different brushes. But idea for you! You can change the brush after the fact (tip 2 of this video using the object tool) so you could literally try changing the look and tool after the fact to see what looks best.
@@Shyfoxx I spent a lot of time neglecting pencils, they've definitely been growing on me! Is your lighter pencil a unique asset, or is it just a variation of the provided pencil?
It's just a basic pencil, I believe it comes with CSP, but I try not to use anything fancy so that I can easily teach people. A basic non textured pencil at higher opacity is what I recommend to do what did
I could never go back to using a mouse to draw, my hands would scream in agony!
Lol that's like so true haha
