The diver story is just like a scooby doo story. Some guy is doing something illegal, gets caught, and the manager (who is in on it) comes up with this dead diver story to cover it up.
And he would've got away with it too, if it hadn't been for those pesky cyberkids
Maybe some skilled researcher could try to check out whether in fact a diver ever died in the cave around the time the manager claimed.
I remember visiting Wookey Hole - as a kid I was so happy when the tour guide started talking about Doctor Who. Although, I did feel bad when it came to the witch... I seriously couldn't see any witchy resemblance in the rock so when the guide pointed it out to us I remember sort of going "oh yeah... yeah that's witchy." The joys of being gay and awkward.
"The Joys of Being Gay and Awkward" should be the title of an autobiography. Yeah, I don't think she looked very witchy, either tbh. Ghost Diver is where it's at.
Screw the haters I freaking love Revenge of the Cybermen.
Even bad Tom Baker Doctor Who, (especially in the first five years) was good or at least had good points. The bit where where he bellows out "Harry Sullivan is an imbecile" kills me every time.
I still like Day of the Daleks and Destiny of the Daleks even though in Day the Daleks voices are kinda slow and in Destiny the Daleks looked scratched and battered.
If u want to see a true doctor who horror story then look up “max headroom incident”
@@BenNightHound there has been some people questioned about it. but yes no one has got to the bottom of it. i have another question though. Why during Doctor Who?!
Wetsuit you say? Perhaps it was simply a Cyberman from the invasion...
i've actully been to wookey hole caves a few times which was a very amazing place. also the man in the diving suit wasin't the only paranormal event to occur to the production team. according to "somerset and bristol ghost stories', Elisabeth Sladen and Ian Marter had a strange experience with their scripts.
"Ms sladen explained that there was a scene in her script of revenge of the cybermen which she didin't like much nor fully understand. it was a scene she shared with ian marter, and when she raised her concerns with him, he agreed that he felt the same way aboult it. the next day, they took the scripts to the director, micheal briant, to gain some insight into the troubling scene, only to discover that he had no knowledge of it. the two actors checked their scripts - and found that the scene they had both individually read was no longer in either in their copies. the page was blank and neither of them could remember the dialogue that had so puzzled them.' - somerset and bristol ghost stories
Character options best make a B&M Sarah Jane Smith figure next year or else there will be words.
I fear no man.
But that thing...
*Genuine leaked clip from the Daleks Master Plan 100% Real*
It scares me.
I remember going to wooky hole as a kid with my grandparents, I was very sly and wondered off for a few minutes on my own. I was far more scared at the thought of cybermen coming out of the caves and darkness then the legend of the witch etc. So say what you will about revenge of the cybermen but it gave me an amazing memory.
Nah the Cybermen left after it saw the Diver. Only thing to convert.
Please do more of these! Especially with James!
There was a diver that drowned there, but not until 1981.
Then again, timey wimey.
AHHHHHH
A hole in the time continuum!
That's not until 2005-Today!
AHHHHHHH
This was some great stuff, interesting Who story and some great inspiration from BuzzFeed Unsolved, I was thoroughly entertained
It was probably the the manager playing a prank.
Too be sung to the tune of “Bohemian Rhapsody”:
“I see a black silhouetto of a suit /
Floppy feet, floppy feet /
Will you enter Wookiee Hole /
Michael E. Briant /
Was not very frightened here!”
Wookey Witch and Diver is the ultimate team up, and i don't want to hear any alternatives.
Sign them up as monsters for the next series. And it better be a two-parter!!
So why did Terry Walsh get sick from being in the water but Liz Sladen didn't, particularly after she'd just escaped the diver's wrath by jumping out of the boat?
FWIW, women's immune systems are known to be generally stronger than men's which is why on average women live longer
@@paulohagan3309 well... some women. My immune system has always sucked. I caught about everything that went around, only missing C-19 by staying home and being strict with the rest of the family, too (that was apparently a devastating mistake for me in another way, but I'm alive, and I have a huge target on my back for dying from it).
Still, I manage to catch stuff all the time. I had Shingles (usually hits people in their 50s and 60s, if at all) when I was a freaking teenager. I've caught colds over and over all winter some years. I'd have been dead if I'd lived a couple of centuries ago!
Banjo, different people have different reactions to things. It's just like how one person can take Medicine X, but it doesn't work for another person, who instead must take Medicine Y. 🤷♀️
@@MaryAnnNytowl Sorry to hear about your travails. Sounds very tough.
However, I did say women in general. There are always going to be exceptions.
All I heard was “Wookiee Hall”
Philistine. How can Revenge not be a favourite? In the summer of 86 I watched this every day for about 4 weeks, I just kept renewing my rental from the video library.
The manager was yanking Briant’s chain.
Those sweaters are awesome! Frankenstein and Kool Aid Man! ;)
Love how you went outside the (police) box for this video. A well spun story!
Loved it, nice video!
I BLOODY KNEW THIS STORY WAS HAUNTED!
Here I am in May 2021 watching this again and "don't mess with the witch or you'll get sick honey" still SENDSSSSS MEEEEE
These stories freak me out a little who knows
You two are really funny together love it
Hi Josh! Love your videos and the exhaustive detail - you leave no stone un-turned! Also love the hard work you put into reconstructions too! I have to say though that Revenge is one of my fave stories due to a combination of things; The chemistry between the regulars has never been better imo - I adore the glare that Tom Baker shoots at Ian Marter in episode 1 after they open they open the bulkhead door and the acidic banter that the Doctor has with Kellman and the Cyber Leader. Of course the model effects are terrible and the script ping-pongs wildly from sparkling to B-movie inanity, but it's one of those stories that I love to wallow in every now and then and you can't fault the total commitment of all the performers.
I live in Bristol, just a few miles away from Wookey Hole and of course it has had a typically spooky mythology built up around it, but whether you believe that the Witch legend and any 'incidents' are genuinely Supernatural or just coincidences and unlucky accidents, it's still a magnificent location and the production team make fantastic use of it.
I hope that you continue to make such fun and informative UA-cam posts for a long time to come!
I live just down the road from wooky hole, the tour speaks about the monk and the witch but they don't mention anything Dr who
I think when I went there about ten years ago they mentioned the cybermen but I could be wrong I was a kid at the time
@@tomslater950 I went like 3 months ago because I'd never been, it was real crappy and about 10 years out of date
I've been to Wooky Hole three times in the past 20 years and each time they mentioned the Cybermen. Even Mark Gatiss lifted the guide's spiel for his Stump Hole skit, "In 1974 you couldn’t move down here for Cyber Men. In fact, in an amusing incident, Tom Baker sprained his ankle on that rock there…
[He points at rock]. Just goes to show how easily these accidents happen."
As to the dead diver, did anyone do any research as to WHO the diver was? Where did he come from? Did anybody recover the body? If so, WHERE is he buried? Did he have family? Are they still alive? Do they have photos of him? Theories must fit the facts, not the other way around. No matter how good a ghost story is you still need to know the facts and not rumors.
yeah, i couldn't find anything on him. It's probably a bunch of baloney! Just a bit of Halloween fun :)
@@JoshSnares I know the feeling. I love a good ghost story as well. I've been watching monster movies all this month for Halloween. I don't care for blood and guts slasher movies...no real plot, bad acting, execrable dialogue... I'd rather go old school, old Universal monsters, and all those '50's monster movies like Curse (Night in the British rerelease) of the Demon. I also like Japanese Kaiju movies, mostly because their so cheesy. Gamera is my favorite. Have a safe and fun Halloween this year. And don't disturb sleeping ghosts, that really ticks them off.
Frogman Gordon Marriott, aged 27, formerly of the Royal Marines drowned there in April, 1949. He had a wife and a child.

I bet the manager guy had been saying "A mysterious diver drowned here four months ago" for about 20 years, and always exactly four months ago! The diving suit hanging ready in his office was totally unrelated to the spooky goings on(!)
Well, ya learn something new every single day. I with you, Josh - the ghost diver is more plausible than the witchy rock. I think I might go watch Revenge of the Cybermen again now.
I had read and heard in the past that it was a spelunker (AKA caver, or potholer), with rigging for caving (ropes, pitons, and such), not air tank or flippers. That's really weird!
I had my first ever panic attack at Wookey Hole when I was 9. I had pretty bad claustrophobia, which didn't help, but then the tour guide mentioned calcified human bodies deep in the caves and I just freaked right out.
I love this and would want more.
I used to live near Wookey Hole and have been in the caves a lot. It has an ambiance about it. Like I have never seen any ghosts or anything there but like the atmosphere you get is pretty disconcerting. Especially when you hear about the deaths that have occurred in the caves. It is fantastic to visit though!
2:05 JESUS !!! damnit Josh you bloody scared me, though that is pretty creepy, i should continue watching I'm only 2 minutes in oof xD
Ahhhhh I love this!
Oh 2spoopy4me. This story is lot more interesting than revenge of the cybermen is itself
Good video on an interesting tale - I've been to Wookey Hole (though was too young to fully appreciate it) and know of the various legends surrounding it, though didn't know of this Who-related one. Constructive comment (cos I love all your videos, Josh): I like the "funny interjections" but felt they did get in the way of the story... and atmosphere... at times. Could maybe have done two versions of this one - 'with' and 'without' commentary. :D (That's not knocking it, though).
Idk, Revenge of the Cybermen is scary by itself. I mean a story of THAT quality in MY Series 12???? 😰😰
Ironically, the Cybermen did appear as ghosts in "The Army Of Ghosts".
That was nightmare fuel. Perfect for this time of year.... "...and that diver.....Han Solo"...HA!
There was something else as well Lis mentioned about the script text disappearing
4:04 OH FFS xD this shot is bloody horrifying 😩
May I ask what issues you had with The Revenge of the Cybermen?
Have to admit, I was leaning towards James’ logic. But then Josh had more crash zooms and knowing looks to camera... so Josh wins. :)
This. Video. Is. Awesome :D I had no idea this happened! Creepy :O
The Season 12 boxset in the background is mocking me and I feel personally attacked. The video is great and entertaining as always. But that Season 12 man.
Also I'd genuinely watch a B movie horror about the production of the story plagued by a witch stalagmite and a ghoulish scuba diver.
There are no such thing as ghosts or the supernatural. If there was a diver, there was a diver.
At first I thought you said the diver was upset with all the boagans running around. Vogans or bogans or bogan vogans, running around.
Can you do other spooky true Doctor Who stories?
So MrTARDIS isn't the only cursed by Revenge of the Cybermen?
Fantastic video! Question, how do you make your brilliant thumbnails?
Josh Snares 😂 ok, whenever I do them they look either strange or sad 😂 I’ll just have to practice
I don't know what to type so I'll just say: *Wowzah*
I remember reading about the diver from one of the interviews back in the past. I thought he heard the diver come up the cavern whistling a tune and the guy spoke to him. Can't remember much else. One of those moments when you wish you can remember where you read it - might have been in that DWB interview files black or white book?
I had the story from a interview with Briant on the Revenge of the Cybermen DVD. His story may have changed over time, the memory cheats and all that
@@JoshSnares Well, precisely. I have probably mixed it up with a completely different story about a whistling ghost.
@@JoshSnares yeah, I had read that it was a spelunker (potholer, caver), not a diver. It's weird how the story has changed.
@@IanGettings like I told Josh above, I'd read (also in the past, many years ago, in fact) that it was a spelunker (caver, potholer) instead of a diver. It's weird, innit?

No it's like the JoJo fighting stance meme
The Diver Vs the Witch
Aight I aint sleeping tonight :)
This reminds me of a league of gentlemen episode but I can’t place why
The missile that was shown was NASA footage.
Let's be real the video was alright, but the real news is that SEASON 12 IS BEING RE-RELEASED.
JK brilliant video as always tho.
Revenge of the Cybermen. Not on part with most other Cybermen stories classic Who has to offer, but an interesting BTS nonetheless. Also, bringing Tom Baker's Doctor into a rather classic, somewhat Troughton-esque DW-Scenario in some ways... wasn't exactly a bad idea, though it didn't fit the shows newer style as much as the b/w era. Also, it clearly looks pale compared to other highlights of this era or even season for that matter. ;)
But as it is the first Tom Baker Story to ever be released here in Germany or to be dubbed into german and as of now one of only 2 actually, it is a story that I certainly will always have a little weak spot for. (Keepers of Traken is the other one, if you're wondering, having just been released last week... and Logopolis will follow soon in November^^)
Spooooooooky
Why would there be bogans there? It's in England. I'm sure they do travel, but I can't imagine there'd be that many going to Wookey Hole or on the Doctor Who production team.
@@danielchilvers3509 not in Australia though. Bogans are native to Australia and live on a diet of VB and meat pies. They are often seen wearing blue singlets (or what they call vests in the UK) and thongs (not the underwear, what the rest of the world calls flip flops). Their interests include football (Aussie Rules, not the world game...although in NSW and Queensland they tend to prefer Rugby), cricket and beer. They tend to be rather homophobic and/or transphobic but this isn't true across the species and various sub species. However, they are more likely to vote for whoever is the most conservative candidate. Their favourite music tends to be that of Jimmy "Barnsey" Barnes and his former band Cold Chisel, although AC/DC is also quite popular with the bogan community.
Does Josh say bogans or Vogans? Between him being Australian and the subtitles and the Vogans being one of the aliens in the story, I'm genuinely confused.
I think it’s supernatural because I believe in this ghost stuff
P.S. this was some scary stuff
What if the bell at the locked door rang but there was no one there 😱👻👻
Me and my brother watched Revenge of the Cybermen yesterday night and it was at the motor boat scene with Sarah that I realised, "hang on, this is the location that's haunted!!!" Because I remembered watching this :o Didnt spot the diver in the depths below... but who knows if we look hard enough on a rewatch, we might be able to spot a shadowy figure lurking in the water. Dun dun duuuuunnn :O
No matter how many ghost stories Josh Snares tells, nothing on earth is as cursed as Season 26 unboxing *ASMR*
Also why am I watching this at 3 AM?!
There could be Cybermen prowling Wookey Hole too, as well as ghosts.
Oh maybe that's why the stories so bad
Josh: I think it was witches!
James: no
Josh: okay.
Lol
Nah it was the Cybermen haunting the caves as it is Voga, after all
