This episode is one that I appreciate more on subsequent viewing. Kind of like Simple Ways. I wonder if part of the idea behind nicknames like "Crash", "Clipper" and "Hoof-In-Mouth" is ego control. A constant reminder to not let the awesomeness of being a Wonderbolt get to their heads. I agree that this sort of comedy relief is fine for Spike. Also, it was adorable how he was clinging to Pinkie's head. Spike is Best Hat.
I actually never thought of that, that could be true. It also might be a reminder to RD that with a nickname like that, she's still part of the group and not alone.
+DJchilcott VERY interesting observations! Yes, I agree that the nickname thing could be a tradition for that very reason. A team like the Wonderbolts is bound to be full of hotshots, and their egos definitely need to be kept in check. Some people think that the Wonderbolts are horrible bullies for doing this, but while I respect their opinion, I just can't agree with it. It was a friendly thing, not a hateful one (thought they could have explained that sooner), and I'm sure they didn't know about Dash's past with that nickname. Spike is best hat...that's priceless. Dash is kind of a special cas she defentitley had ego but unlike the others (Aside from Rainbow Falls) We have seeb rainbows ego be lowered and i also believe that she might have bigger control over her ego then them (Rainbow falls being the best example) Unlike the others (from what we know) Dash has been called Crash before and i think they hit a bruised part that 1.They didnt know was there or 2. They didnt realize it would hurt as much as it did.

This is the second episode in a row that I didn't know how to feel about entirely at first, but after some thought, I've come to appreciate and enjoy a whole lot more.

Not only are they checking a lot of items off our wishlists, but they are really writing some great stories that really make you think hard. This is one of the things I really love about this show. I really liked this episode. Seems each of the Mane 6 are getting to succeed in their individual dreams and destinies, this and last season. RD was a bit over the top with trying too hard to ...be awesome. But she has always had an ego and acts before thinking things through, and Spit Fire knows that...so of course they are gonna be a bit harder on her. The Bolts are pretty much Equestria's military force. RD is certainly not used such an environment and social standards compared to her group of friends. The nickname thing, nothing wrong with that and is infact a normal thing in similar real life scenarios. It was quite subtle, but the Bolts really did like her from the beginning , it was only made obvious at the end after RD finally let go and relaxed and expressed her emotions. I thought it was excellent that RD's childhood shame and embarrassment of her nickname was reversed into something she can embrace and even be proud of. Both RD and the Bolts will continue to grow and learn from each other. And dammit writers!!! I want to know what Spit Fire's nickname is!!!
+Nate W Thibodeau Exactly. Every newbie on a team like this will get some kind of hazing, simple fact of life. I would like to point out that there was at least one point where one of the Wonderbolts offered Dash a bit of genuine encouragement in the locker room after the first day's practice, which I think shows that they really did care about her.
Heres my thing i dont think it had anything to do with them "making fun of her" that hurt her i think it was the fact that that nickname has left a scar that wasnt healed (Until this episode) She obviously didnt know it was a friendly tease but the nickname is a big part of why she didnt ask Because the nickname is Childhood trauma in a way and its hard for her to hear because its a bruised part that wasnt really healed until this episode
Season 6 has not dissapointed yet, and I doubt that episode 8 will. I believe Jim said that it, along with episode 14, were episodes that he was proud of. Needless to say, I'm excited.
this episode hit me so much cause well I was a volunteer for a couple of years at my local science and discovery center that I worked hard to hopefully to be employed of course I did get another job but I did continued to volunteer my mom was starting to be worried and all that if they never hired me at all I should consider to move on to something else but I'm stubborn I love her anyways. but then my moment came and got the job and boy there's more to do especially summer coming and kids being out of school phew but I can handle it. so yeah when I first watch this series rainbow dash was the first I liked then next to rarity my main favorites love all the others but those to are in my heart (feels)
this is actually a very common practice in the airforce...when a pilot gets thier wings and does thier first solo flight,there is a hazing tradition where all the senior pilots get togather and give the new recruits thier first call sign which is always either a deliberate joke or pun on the pilots name or a refrence to something stupid they did on thier first flight. the goal and insentive is a bit more than just poking fun of them its also to remind them where they came from because all the pilots have these embarassing handles,including the senior pilots in a way it makes them all flying on over level turf.
Well those two Wonderbolts showed up after RD was already on the runway, yeah she could've seen them if she looked but they were pretty high and chances are it would've still happened even if she had looked.
Nice to see someone else shares my opinion on this even if she'd looked she'd have not seen anyone. You don't even hear the sound of them till she's fully on the runway and they approach from behind the clouds. I always felt that they started that dive AFTER they saw her on the runway not before.

I rather enjoy your long overviews of the episodes. You go way more in depth than any other commentator and I respect that. Especially since you have pretty much the same ideas, concepts and theories that I do, no joke man. I can't tell you how many times I try to write down notes during your reaction, to put down on the comment section, only to erase them 5 seconds later because you start talking about the same thing XD Also, on the scene with Scootaloo at the end, I was afraid she was going to blame herself for Rainbowdash's failed stunt. I'm glad that wasn't the case though because that would've been soul crushing to see.
+OmegaChimera Thanks man, really glad you enjoy my commentary. Always fun to find somebody who shares many of the same thoughts. :D I don't think she would have blamed herself. Clearly even she thought it was a bad idea, and only did it because Dash asked her to. My fear was more that she would get hurt attempting the stunt, or that she would be upset over seeing her hero fail in such a manner. I don't think it would have been enough to make Scootaloo give up on Dash has a hero and big sister figure, but still, nobody likes to see their heroes mess up and fail. I just thought it would have been nice to see Dash apologize to Scootaloo, especially since Scootaloo could really have gotten hurt. That ramp did lead right off a cliff, after all.
I have to really fully watch this review before I make any real statements regarding AG's thoughts on it, but I do have some thoughts to share concerning the episode. this episode was a bit cringe-worthy, but only because of Rainbow Dash lacking usual common sense in situations like this, and otherwise didn't find it that bad, and fairly decent. As it comes to the whole nickname thing, TV Tropes and the fact that I grew up an Air Force Brat (father was in the air force and a couple years back retired) can back up on the nicknames thing in terms of pilots: there are nicknames given to pilots that have made particularly notable mistakes--it's to basically ensure they don't forget that particular day, similar to how the wonderbolts have their particular nicknames. (far as my pop went, he never really made a mistake to earn an embarrassing nickname--he was called by the shorthand for our last name, Rod) that being said, it's very unlikely they knew that the nickname "Rainbow Crash" was an unpleasant nickname from her fillyhood, and it kind of bugged me that Rainbow made no real attempt to let Spitfire know that particular connection, or at the least block it out, take the nickname and make it her own. the former option may have not changed much of anything regarding it if done, but but it might've spared Dash the trouble she went through, because it could've have Spitfire explain the whole nickname thing to her sooner rather than near the end of the ep (then again, wouldn't have an ep if that did happen). that being said, a big congrats on RD achieving her dream, and next time try to use your brain and common sense before you embarrass yourself more than need be, Rainbow.

I think you'll find that I echo'd a lot of this in my commentary. :D I can understand people's objection to the cringe factor, but quite honestly I didn't mind it, at least in this case, because I knew Dash tends to need to end up learning things the hard way, and fully expected her to act the way she did, aside from the whole imitating her friends bit. At the same time, I was impressed at how much maturity she ultimately showed by owning up to her mistakes. Best Dash episode? Certainly not, but an important one nonetheless.

+Webs SOTE Oh man, out of the entire series?! I can't honestly give you a complete answer on that, largely because I haven't picked apart earlier episodes anywhere near like I have recent ones, and it's been a while since I watched the older seasons. I feel like I need to re-watch a bunch of stuff to give an honest answer. I will give you a couple though. For Spike, his best moment, bar none, was Gauntlet of Fire, for reasons stated in my commentary in that reaction. That was really the first time we got to see him show the maturity that he should have, given all the personal and friendship lessons he's learned in the past. For Rainbow Dash, since those episodes are more fresh in my memory at this point, I would have to say that Dash's best moment was in Wonderbolt Academy. That seemed to be the one time where we've seen her being able to demonstrate her abilities with full confidence, and without getting too cocky and screwing things up. Lightning Dust was the one who did that, instead of Dash, and in the end, Dash chose to stand firm on her principles, even if it meant not being a Wonderbolt. I don't think I could've been prouder of Dash at the end of that episode.
Not just twice they were flying togheter, even when she said "I'm not a wonderbolt material afterall" he was the one who compiment her first and tell her his nickname!!!
All be it she wouldve stopped to save her if scotaloo needed it. Lightning dust wouldve been like "Whatever its a good show" Rianbow wouldve been like "Screw the show im helping scoot" We know from many episode (Wonderbolt Academy,Rainbow falls) that she would choose here friends ove rthe wonderbolts which is saying soemthing bc those r her idols. @@jaelynnelson3455 yeah true. It just would’ve been better if Dash realized how dangerous it was for Scoot before making her do it. Though, ofc, she would never be worse than Lightning. We can still see the remnants of her attitude from when she was in the Wonderbolts and almost crashed Twilight’a balloon. She endangered lives there, and in a way worser here, she endangered a little filly’s life. So we can see that part of her didn’t change, even if she reflects it was wrong for her to do so with the Mane 6.
Her impressions were,…all over the place. I give 100% on the flutter shy. I give points for the twilight. And Ashley ball trying not to fall into her AJ voice was fun to hear. The others,…are what NON bronies think of the show. All of that aside, this reaction video was a lot of fun.
Another great reaction and post-commentary. I agree with everything you said and that her mortifying childhood nickname is why she was performing so badly with the Bolts. The Bolts teasing Dash kind of reminded me of like how new recruits in the military (at least in media portrayals) kind of give them embarrassing nicknames. I most definitely don't think they were being mean. But it's kind of like you said, it's an initiation and new recruit thing. And Dash learning to work in a structured group setting...The episode was solid for me. Not the best but definitely realistic, which I really appreciate. Also, I think Dash's imitating her friends was from desperation to get rid of her ridiculing nickname. So, her getting that nickname that reminded her of that bad moment in Flight Camp is why she behaved the way she did. It messed with her head, like you said, and I don't think she was thinking clearly. Again, I give this episode points for displaying realistic issues. +XyKP1fan Yeah, the nickname thing seemed to be the driving force behind all her antics in this one, and while I don't agree with her actions, as they were silly at best, and dangerous at worst, I can empathize with her, as I had some rather hurtful nicknames back when I was in grade school too. Anyway, glad you enjoy my long-winded commentaries. I know viewership drops off dramatically when the commentary starts, but there are several who say they like it, and I find it hard not to speak my mind on this stuff, so I guess I will just keep doing what I do and hope people enjoy it. :D Oh, for Spitfire's nickname, the thing I found funny is that she told Dash "you don't even wanna know what they call me" and then proceeded to tell her anyway. XD I'm not sure she's been there the longest though. I thought I read somewhere that Soarin has been in the Wonderbolts longer than Spitfire (seniority doesn't necessarily determine rank), but I could be wrong on that, or that could have been in fan content instead of canon. In any case, I would say that Spitfire's rank probably allows her to keep the others from ever using the nickname anymore, perks of the rank I guess.

I don't know how to feel about this episode; while I love the fact that Rainbow Dash is finally a Wonderbolt there was just so much cringe in this episode. Don't know how to feel about it. Really surprised by Soarin's reaction, figured he would be someone who would catch on that something was going on with Rainbow since he and Rainbow are on pretty good terms. +Book Lover I haven't seen anything in canon (that I can remember) that would lead me to believe that any of the Wonderbolts know about RD's past with the nickname in flight school. I think if they did know, they might not have hit her so hard with that, because they're not really mean. They were actually treating her like one of the team, which she didn't realize until later. I think it's safe to say Dash is stuck with the "Crash" nickname within the Wonderbolts, BUT, I still think she'll end up owning that nickname in the long run. A reminder of the past isn't always a bad thing, as it can allow you to see how far you've grown as a person since then. Cringe factor? Eh, perhaps, but not as cringe-worthy as some other episodes in this series that come to mind. For me personally, Tanks for the Memories actually had more cringe-worthy moments for me than this episode, because her refusal to accept the reality of Tank's hibernation drove me nuts. I feel like Dash is smarter than that, and I didn't like that she got so hyper-emotional that she threw common sense completely out the window for seemingly no good reason. Comparing that to this episode, I love seeing how she's now willing to face reality head-on. In this case, the nutty stuff she was doing kind of made sense, because the nickname was really messing with her mind, and she was desperate to pull off anything that could get them to stop using it.
+Book Lover Sure, I do my best to respect all opinions. I think there's a lot of room for interpretation in these stories, which makes for great discussion. As I just mentioned in another comment, Dash's behavior in Tanks for the Memories just isn't relatable for me, and didn't make any logical sense. There was one time I lost a very loved pet cat (as in, it died), and though it hurt, and I cried, I knew it was inevitable long before it happened, and I accepted it and moved on. The fact that RD would go so crazy over just hibernation didn't make any sense to me, since he wasn't even dying. On the other hand, back in grade school, I was bullied, and was subjected to some nasty nicknames of my own, so I could really empathize with Dash in how much it hurt for anyone to call her that, especially her heroes. Though I don't agree that what she did was right, I can understand her desire to do anything to get them to stop calling her by that name. As for her explaining the history on that name to them, I don't think I would have liked to see her play that card. Given how much time has passed since flight school, she would probably be frowned on for playing the "it hurts my feelings" card. Besides, they all had nicknames based on things from their past they weren't proud of. At some point you have to just accept that the past is in the past, and move on. I actually think it's kind of a good thing that Dash was confronted with this nickname again, because I feel like now she can finally deal with it, rather than just running away from it again. Like I mentioned in my commentary, Dash used to like to try and run away from many of her problems, but she's now showing that she's willing to accept and face reality, and I feel like that is a MAJOR step for her. I've had issues with Dash for a long time because of her lack of maturity, but I saw her grow up in a big way in this episode, and she has definitely earned my respect now.
+Book Lover You do make a good point about Dash crying in it, which we hadn't seen before. I guess now that I think about it, that was kind of the turning point where she started being able to accept reality, even when it didn't go the way she wanted, which is what was highlighted again here in Newbie Dash. While I found RD's actions to be a bit cringe-worthy in Tanks for the Memories, they did ultimately lead to her learning a very valuable lesson, so it was indeed a good episode for that fact alone. :)
I have a theory on what Spitfire's nickname was. Just replace a single letter in her name, and you could give her a nickname that wouldn't get past the censors for a kids show.

+cody2819 Hasbro contracted with Sony for distribution of the MLP albums available for sale on Amazon and iTunes and whatnot, and the extended version of the MLP theme is on one of those albums. It appears Hasbro told them to cool it, thankfully, but a lot of fan content using songs from those albums were getting taken down by SME for a while. Regardless, it's just easier for the audience to hear my comments without the theme playing.
Or in this case sometimes he over react to a lot of these episodes and makes an ass of himself acting like a damn fool I'll admit he is hilarious and a great guy but I think this MLP nonsense has already gotten over his head and he thinks that he should belong in that world

Equestria cannot handle another Pinkie? Silly Applegeek! Equestria already has TWO Pinkies! Did you forget about Cheese Sandwich? XD I really liked this episode, but it didn't bring any deep feelings for RD becoming a Wonderbolt like Crusaders of the Lost Mark, but it really makes a point of no return for the series. For all practical purposes you could say that Rainbow is basically finished as a character. She improved and grew in what she needed to, and her lifelong dream has been accomplished. Any more than this for her as an individual character wouldn't be nothing more than fanservice, not that I'd complain about it. I think Hasbro is trying to tidy up the mane 6's objectives as characters so that they can put more attention to Twilight and Starlight's mentor-pupil relationship, which I predict will be the major focus of this season's finale. Maybe with Starlight having to actively save the day and not just being a support character for the apocalyptic problem, which she was in the season premier, even though the episodes focused on her relationship with Sunburst (shipping!). Also, the "insert shipping joke here" mention was funny, don't let anyone tell you otherwise ;)
I agree that Dash's entry into the Wonderbolts wasn't a majorly emotional thing for me, but probably more because I felt like she already had one hoof in the door after the events of Rarity Investigates. I actually would've been more surprised if her next interaction with the Wonderbolts DIDN'T result in her joining the team. And yeah, I see what you're saying about her story being done, but I'm a strong believer in the idea that we never stop learning new things. There's always some new obstacle we end up needing to overcome, and I think there's plenty of room left for story. I just wish the writers would finally give Applejack some growth. Because of the fact that she's my favorite, it bugs me that I don't get to see nearly as much of her character as the others. At this point, I feel like Applejack and Fluttershy are the two least-developed characters of the Mane 6, so hopefully we'll see the writers do something more with them soon. Definitely looking forward to Flutter Brutter, hopefully will be better than Applejack's Day Off. :(

I can't say I've seen a Wonderbolt episode I liked. They have a habit of writing the 'bolts as antagonists. It's hard to understand how RD as a character keeps them on a pedestal when she's always been shown as better than them. The only time the 'bolts have really been shown positively was the Gala.
Looking at the Wonderbolts as half military and half sports team, and knowing a little bit about how those cultures work, gives me a different perspective. In Rainbow Falls, it makes sense that they'd insist on Soarin staying in the hospital longer because stressing an injury could jeopardize his career. It's also the first indication of how eager they were to have Rainbow on the team. Too eager, as it turns out. In the academy episode (forgot the name), Rainbow got assigned as wingpony because she was more cautious than her partner. The wingpony is supposed to look out for the leader and make sure they come out safely, so that decision makes sense. Spitfire didn't know about all the crazy that went down until Rainbow gave her rant and stormed out. As we saw, Spitfire followed Rainbow out and set things right. In Rarity Investigates, the suspicion was reasonable (motive and opportunity) and they gave Rainbow a chance to prove her innocence. Unfair? Only if Rainbow was being arrested for a crime.
brigidtheirish Of the Bolt episodes, Newbie Dash is one of the better ones. As a correctional officer, I think the hazing was quite believable. It was cringy for different reasons. For Wonderbolt Academy, I agree it would be a completely different and a good episode if they ended it the way you frame the ending. If Spitfire had come out and said, "Hey! We can't fix problems /you/ keep hidden. Being part of a team means you look out for each other and if things are being done wrong, you bring them to light." That's not how it ended. Rainbow tells them they are crap at teamwork cause they didn't notice the problems she was actively trying to conceal and storms off. Then Spitfire chases her down to apologize, being all "Its a good thing we aren't supposed to be a high water mark for teamwork and professionalism cause we totally needed you to come in and tell us how bad we are at safety and being a team. Here's a gold star." They were supposed to be her heroes, and that was a chance to have Rainbow learn a lesson about being less of a hot shot and being part of a team from her idols. Instead she teaches them a lesson on a topic they /should/ be the literal poster ponies for. Rainbow Falls just hammers in how far superior Dash is to the Bolts. Man, your such a better flier than us. Maybe I'm in the minority, but having her be constantly just flat out superior to the Bolts in every way is a waste of character development. What kind of character growth could we have had if Dash could have been the recipient of lessons on humility and being a team player? To have the fastest Bolt, Fleetfoot, be faster than her outside the special case of the Rainboom? To have Spitfire actually teach her things instead of needing Dash to show up and show her how to lead her team? What actual growth has she had to make to become a Bolt? What weaknesses has she had to overcome? In all their episodes, it's the Bolts who are wrong and need Dash to set them right, when it should be the other way around. This episode was the first one that even hinted she needed to improve, and it comes after her ascension to their ranks.
I agree they could've framed the episodes better. The writers for this show have been getting better as time goes on, but they still have areas they need to work on. I guess I just prefer to see the good wherever I can find it.

I wonder if part of the idea behind nicknames like "Crash", "Clipper" and "Hoof-In-Mouth" is ego control. A constant reminder to not let the awesomeness of being a Wonderbolt get to their heads.

+DJchilcott VERY interesting observations! Yes, I agree that the nickname thing could be a tradition for that very reason. A team like the Wonderbolts is bound to be full of hotshots, and their egos definitely need to be kept in check. Some people think that the Wonderbolts are horrible bullies for doing this, but while I respect their opinion, I just can't agree with it. It was a friendly thing, not a hateful one (thought they could have explained that sooner), and I'm sure they didn't know about Dash's past with that nickname.

Not only are they checking a lot of items off our wishlists, but they are really writing some great stories that really make you think hard. This is one of the things I really love about this show. I really liked this episode. Seems each of the Mane 6 are getting to succeed in their individual dreams and destinies, this and last season. RD was a bit over the top with trying too hard to ...be awesome. But she has always had an ego and acts before thinking things through, and Spit Fire knows that...so of course they are gonna be a bit harder on her. The Bolts are pretty much Equestria's military force. RD is certainly not used such an environment and social standards compared to her group of friends. The nickname thing, nothing wrong with that and is infact a normal thing in similar real life scenarios. It was quite subtle, but the Bolts really did like her from the beginning , it was only made obvious at the end after RD finally let go and relaxed and expressed her emotions. I thought it was excellent that RD's childhood shame and embarrassment of her nickname was reversed into something she can embrace and even be proud of. Both RD and the Bolts will continue to grow and learn from each other. And dammit writers!!! I want to know what Spit Fire's nickname is!!!

I would like to point out that there was at least one point where one of the Wonderbolts offered Dash a bit of genuine encouragement in the locker room after the first day's practice, which I think shows that they really did care about her.
Being in army is a nightmare. Especially for guys who are more sensitive. Delicate and they are forced to be in the army.
Heres my thing i dont think it had anything to do with them "making fun of her" that hurt her i think it was the fact that that nickname has left a scar that wasnt healed (Until this episode) She obviously didnt know it was a friendly tease but the nickname is a big part of why she didnt ask Because the nickname is Childhood trauma in a way and its hard for her to hear because its a bruised part that wasnt really healed until this episode
Season 6 has not dissapointed yet, and I doubt that episode 8 will. I believe Jim said that it, along with episode 14, were episodes that he was proud of. Needless to say, I'm excited.

this episode hit me so much cause well I was a volunteer for a couple of years at my local science and discovery center that I worked hard to hopefully to be employed of course I did get another job but I did continued to volunteer my mom was starting to be worried and all that if they never hired me at all I should consider to move on to something else but I'm stubborn I love her anyways. but then my moment came and got the job and boy there's more to do especially summer coming and kids being out of school phew but I can handle it. so yeah when I first watch this series rainbow dash was the first I liked then next to rarity my main favorites love all the others but those to are in my heart (feels)

this is actually a very common practice in the airforce...when a pilot gets thier wings and does thier first solo flight,there is a hazing tradition where all the senior pilots get togather and give the new recruits thier first call sign which is always either a deliberate joke or pun on the pilots name or a refrence to something stupid they did on thier first flight.
the goal and insentive is a bit more than just poking fun of them its also to remind them where they came from because all the pilots have these embarassing handles,including the senior pilots in a way it makes them all flying on over level turf.

Well those two Wonderbolts showed up after RD was already on the runway, yeah she could've seen them if she looked but they were pretty high and chances are it would've still happened even if she had looked.
Nice to see someone else shares my opinion on this even if she'd looked she'd have not seen anyone. You don't even hear the sound of them till she's fully on the runway and they approach from behind the clouds. I always felt that they started that dive AFTER they saw her on the runway not before.
First things first; Congrats on 1000+ subs. I'm very glad and honored to be a part of it. Can't wait to see what you have planned. And by the by, you do what you do, man. I rather enjoy your long overviews of the episodes. You go way more in depth than any other commentator and I respect that.
Especially since you have pretty much the same ideas, concepts and theories that I do, no joke man. I can't tell you how many times I try to write down notes during your reaction, to put down on the comment section, only to erase them 5 seconds later because you start talking about the same thing XD
Also, on the scene with Scootaloo at the end, I was afraid she was going to blame herself for Rainbowdash's failed stunt. I'm glad that wasn't the case though because that would've been soul crushing to see.

I don't think she would have blamed herself. Clearly even she thought it was a bad idea, and only did it because Dash asked her to. My fear was more that she would get hurt attempting the stunt, or that she would be upset over seeing her hero fail in such a manner. I don't think it would have been enough to make Scootaloo give up on Dash has a hero and big sister figure, but still, nobody likes to see their heroes mess up and fail. I just thought it would have been nice to see Dash apologize to Scootaloo, especially since Scootaloo could really have gotten hurt. That ramp did lead right off a cliff, after all.

I have to really fully watch this review before I make any real statements regarding AG's thoughts on it, but I do have some thoughts to share concerning the episode. this episode was a bit cringe-worthy, but only because of Rainbow Dash lacking usual common sense in situations like this, and otherwise didn't find it that bad, and fairly decent. As it comes to the whole nickname thing, TV Tropes and the fact that I grew up an Air Force Brat (father was in the air force and a couple years back retired) can back up on the nicknames thing in terms of pilots: there are nicknames given to pilots that have made particularly notable mistakes--it's to basically ensure they don't forget that particular day, similar to how the wonderbolts have their particular nicknames. (far as my pop went, he never really made a mistake to earn an embarrassing nickname--he was called by the shorthand for our last name, Rod) that being said, it's very unlikely they knew that the nickname "Rainbow Crash" was an unpleasant nickname from her fillyhood, and it kind of bugged me that Rainbow made no real attempt to let Spitfire know that particular connection, or at the least block it out, take the nickname and make it her own. the former option may have not changed much of anything regarding it if done, but but it might've spared Dash the trouble she went through, because it could've have Spitfire explain the whole nickname thing to her sooner rather than near the end of the ep (then again, wouldn't have an ep if that did happen).
that being said, a big congrats on RD achieving her dream, and next time try to use your brain and common sense before you embarrass yourself more than need be, Rainbow.

I think you'll find that I echo'd a lot of this in my commentary. :D I can understand people's objection to the cringe factor, but quite honestly I didn't mind it, at least in this case, because I knew Dash tends to need to end up learning things the hard way, and fully expected her to act the way she did, aside from the whole imitating her friends bit. At the same time, I was impressed at how much maturity she ultimately showed by owning up to her mistakes. Best Dash episode? Certainly not, but an important one nonetheless.

+Webs SOTE Oh man, out of the entire series?! I can't honestly give you a complete answer on that, largely because I haven't picked apart earlier episodes anywhere near like I have recent ones, and it's been a while since I watched the older seasons. I feel like I need to re-watch a bunch of stuff to give an honest answer.
I will give you a couple though. For Spike, his best moment, bar none, was Gauntlet of Fire, for reasons stated in my commentary in that reaction. That was really the first time we got to see him show the maturity that he should have, given all the personal and friendship lessons he's learned in the past.
For Rainbow Dash, since those episodes are more fresh in my memory at this point, I would have to say that Dash's best moment was in Wonderbolt Academy. That seemed to be the one time where we've seen her being able to demonstrate her abilities with full confidence, and without getting too cocky and screwing things up. Lightning Dust was the one who did that, instead of Dash, and in the end, Dash chose to stand firm on her principles, even if it meant not being a Wonderbolt. I don't think I could've been prouder of Dash at the end of that episode.

I just realized, Scootaloo in that Washout episode gave me déjà vu for this episode when Rainbow endangers Scoot’s life rather than Lightning Dust.
All be it she wouldve stopped to save her if scotaloo needed it. Lightning dust wouldve been like "Whatever its a good show" Rianbow wouldve been like "Screw the show im helping scoot" We know from many episode (Wonderbolt Academy,Rainbow falls) that she would choose here friends ove rthe wonderbolts which is saying soemthing bc those r her idols. Hints her be8mg the element of loyalty

We can still see the remnants of her attitude from when she was in the Wonderbolts and almost crashed Twilight’a balloon. She endangered lives there, and in a way worser here, she endangered a little filly’s life. So we can see that part of her didn’t change, even if she reflects it was wrong for her to do so with the Mane 6.
Her impressions were,…all over the place. I give 100% on the flutter shy. I give points for the twilight. And Ashley ball trying not to fall into her AJ voice was fun to hear. The others,…are what NON bronies think of the show. All of that aside, this reaction video was a lot of fun.
Another great reaction and post-commentary. I agree with everything you said and that her mortifying childhood nickname is why she was performing so badly with the Bolts. The Bolts teasing Dash kind of reminded me of like how new recruits in the military (at least in media portrayals) kind of give them embarrassing nicknames. I most definitely don't think they were being mean. But it's kind of like you said, it's an initiation and new recruit thing. And Dash learning to work in a structured group setting...The episode was solid for me. Not the best but definitely realistic, which I really appreciate. Also, I think Dash's imitating her friends was from desperation to get rid of her ridiculing nickname. So, her getting that nickname that reminded her of that bad moment in Flight Camp is why she behaved the way she did. It messed with her head, like you said, and I don't think she was thinking clearly. Again, I give this episode points for displaying realistic issues.

+XyKP1fan Yeah, the nickname thing seemed to be the driving force behind all her antics in this one, and while I don't agree with her actions, as they were silly at best, and dangerous at worst, I can empathize with her, as I had some rather hurtful nicknames back when I was in grade school too.
Anyway, glad you enjoy my long-winded commentaries. I know viewership drops off dramatically when the commentary starts, but there are several who say they like it, and I find it hard not to speak my mind on this stuff, so I guess I will just keep doing what I do and hope people enjoy it. :D
Oh, for Spitfire's nickname, the thing I found funny is that she told Dash "you don't even wanna know what they call me" and then proceeded to tell her anyway. XD I'm not sure she's been there the longest though. I thought I read somewhere that Soarin has been in the Wonderbolts longer than Spitfire (seniority doesn't necessarily determine rank), but I could be wrong on that, or that could have been in fan content instead of canon. In any case, I would say that Spitfire's rank probably allows her to keep the others from ever using the nickname anymore, perks of the rank I guess.

I don't know how to feel about this episode; while I love the fact that Rainbow Dash is finally a Wonderbolt there was just so much cringe in this episode. Don't know how to feel about it. Really surprised by Soarin's reaction, figured he would be someone who would catch on that something was going on with Rainbow since he and Rainbow are on pretty good terms. Great reaction and can't wait for more. XD.
+Book Lover I haven't seen anything in canon (that I can remember) that would lead me to believe that any of the Wonderbolts know about RD's past with the nickname in flight school. I think if they did know, they might not have hit her so hard with that, because they're not really mean. They were actually treating her like one of the team, which she didn't realize until later. I think it's safe to say Dash is stuck with the "Crash" nickname within the Wonderbolts, BUT, I still think she'll end up owning that nickname in the long run. A reminder of the past isn't always a bad thing, as it can allow you to see how far you've grown as a person since then.
Cringe factor? Eh, perhaps, but not as cringe-worthy as some other episodes in this series that come to mind. For me personally, Tanks for the Memories actually had more cringe-worthy moments for me than this episode, because her refusal to accept the reality of Tank's hibernation drove me nuts. I feel like Dash is smarter than that, and I didn't like that she got so hyper-emotional that she threw common sense completely out the window for seemingly no good reason. Comparing that to this episode, I love seeing how she's now willing to face reality head-on. In this case, the nutty stuff she was doing kind of made sense, because the nickname was really messing with her mind, and she was desperate to pull off anything that could get them to stop using it.
+Book Lover Sure, I do my best to respect all opinions. I think there's a lot of room for interpretation in these stories, which makes for great discussion. As I just mentioned in another comment, Dash's behavior in Tanks for the Memories just isn't relatable for me, and didn't make any logical sense. There was one time I lost a very loved pet cat (as in, it died), and though it hurt, and I cried, I knew it was inevitable long before it happened, and I accepted it and moved on. The fact that RD would go so crazy over just hibernation didn't make any sense to me, since he wasn't even dying. On the other hand, back in grade school, I was bullied, and was subjected to some nasty nicknames of my own, so I could really empathize with Dash in how much it hurt for anyone to call her that, especially her heroes. Though I don't agree that what she did was right, I can understand her desire to do anything to get them to stop calling her by that name.
As for her explaining the history on that name to them, I don't think I would have liked to see her play that card. Given how much time has passed since flight school, she would probably be frowned on for playing the "it hurts my feelings" card. Besides, they all had nicknames based on things from their past they weren't proud of. At some point you have to just accept that the past is in the past, and move on. I actually think it's kind of a good thing that Dash was confronted with this nickname again, because I feel like now she can finally deal with it, rather than just running away from it again. Like I mentioned in my commentary, Dash used to like to try and run away from many of her problems, but she's now showing that she's willing to accept and face reality, and I feel like that is a MAJOR step for her. I've had issues with Dash for a long time because of her lack of maturity, but I saw her grow up in a big way in this episode, and she has definitely earned my respect now.
+Book Lover You do make a good point about Dash crying in it, which we hadn't seen before. I guess now that I think about it, that was kind of the turning point where she started being able to accept reality, even when it didn't go the way she wanted, which is what was highlighted again here in Newbie Dash. While I found RD's actions to be a bit cringe-worthy in Tanks for the Memories, they did ultimately lead to her learning a very valuable lesson, so it was indeed a good episode for that fact alone. :)

I have a theory on what Spitfire's nickname was. Just replace a single letter in her name, and you could give her a nickname that wouldn't get past the censors for a kids show.

+cody2819 Hasbro contracted with Sony for distribution of the MLP albums available for sale on Amazon and iTunes and whatnot, and the extended version of the MLP theme is on one of those albums. It appears Hasbro told them to cool it, thankfully, but a lot of fan content using songs from those albums were getting taken down by SME for a while. Regardless, it's just easier for the audience to hear my comments without the theme playing.

It always seems like they missed opportunities with Starlight when it came to episodes like this. Group episodes where she could have been bonding with the group.

I really liked this episode, but it didn't bring any deep feelings for RD becoming a Wonderbolt like Crusaders of the Lost Mark, but it really makes a point of no return for the series. For all practical purposes you could say that Rainbow is basically finished as a character. She improved and grew in what she needed to, and her lifelong dream has been accomplished. Any more than this for her as an individual character wouldn't be nothing more than fanservice, not that I'd complain about it.
I think Hasbro is trying to tidy up the mane 6's objectives as characters so that they can put more attention to Twilight and Starlight's mentor-pupil relationship, which I predict will be the major focus of this season's finale. Maybe with Starlight having to actively save the day and not just being a support character for the apocalyptic problem, which she was in the season premier, even though the episodes focused on her relationship with Sunburst (shipping!).
Also, the "insert shipping joke here" mention was funny, don't let anyone tell you otherwise ;)
I agree that Dash's entry into the Wonderbolts wasn't a majorly emotional thing for me, but probably more because I felt like she already had one hoof in the door after the events of Rarity Investigates. I actually would've been more surprised if her next interaction with the Wonderbolts DIDN'T result in her joining the team. And yeah, I see what you're saying about her story being done, but I'm a strong believer in the idea that we never stop learning new things. There's always some new obstacle we end up needing to overcome, and I think there's plenty of room left for story. I just wish the writers would finally give Applejack some growth. Because of the fact that she's my favorite, it bugs me that I don't get to see nearly as much of her character as the others. At this point, I feel like Applejack and Fluttershy are the two least-developed characters of the Mane 6, so hopefully we'll see the writers do something more with them soon. Definitely looking forward to Flutter Brutter, hopefully will be better than Applejack's Day Off. :(

I can't say I've seen a Wonderbolt episode I liked. They have a habit of writing the 'bolts as antagonists. It's hard to understand how RD as a character keeps them on a pedestal when she's always been shown as better than them. The only time the 'bolts have really been shown positively was the Gala.
Looking at the Wonderbolts as half military and half sports team, and knowing a little bit about how those cultures work, gives me a different perspective.
In Rainbow Falls, it makes sense that they'd insist on Soarin staying in the hospital longer because stressing an injury could jeopardize his career. It's also the first indication of how eager they were to have Rainbow on the team. Too eager, as it turns out.
In the academy episode (forgot the name), Rainbow got assigned as wingpony because she was more cautious than her partner. The wingpony is supposed to look out for the leader and make sure they come out safely, so that decision makes sense. Spitfire didn't know about all the crazy that went down until Rainbow gave her rant and stormed out. As we saw, Spitfire followed Rainbow out and set things right.
In Rarity Investigates, the suspicion was reasonable (motive and opportunity) and they gave Rainbow a chance to prove her innocence. Unfair? Only if Rainbow was being arrested for a crime.
brigidtheirish Of the Bolt episodes, Newbie Dash is one of the better ones. As a correctional officer, I think the hazing was quite believable. It was cringy for different reasons.
For Wonderbolt Academy, I agree it would be a completely different and a good episode if they ended it the way you frame the ending. If Spitfire had come out and said, "Hey! We can't fix problems /you/ keep hidden. Being part of a team means you look out for each other and if things are being done wrong, you bring them to light." That's not how it ended. Rainbow tells them they are crap at teamwork cause they didn't notice the problems she was actively trying to conceal and storms off. Then Spitfire chases her down to apologize, being all "Its a good thing we aren't supposed to be a high water mark for teamwork and professionalism cause we totally needed you to come in and tell us how bad we are at safety and being a team. Here's a gold star." They were supposed to be her heroes, and that was a chance to have Rainbow learn a lesson about being less of a hot shot and being part of a team from her idols. Instead she teaches them a lesson on a topic they /should/ be the literal poster ponies for.
Rainbow Falls just hammers in how far superior Dash is to the Bolts. Man, your such a better flier than us. Maybe I'm in the minority, but having her be constantly just flat out superior to the Bolts in every way is a waste of character development. What kind of character growth could we have had if Dash could have been the recipient of lessons on humility and being a team player? To have the fastest Bolt, Fleetfoot, be faster than her outside the special case of the Rainboom? To have Spitfire actually teach her things instead of needing Dash to show up and show her how to lead her team?
What actual growth has she had to make to become a Bolt? What weaknesses has she had to overcome? In all their episodes, it's the Bolts who are wrong and need Dash to set them right, when it should be the other way around. This episode was the first one that even hinted she needed to improve, and it comes after her ascension to their ranks.
I agree they could've framed the episodes better. The writers for this show have been getting better as time goes on, but they still have areas they need to work on. I guess I just prefer to see the good wherever I can find it.

I'm going to be at MWBF in a few weeks, where I'll get to meet Ashleigh Ball, and I can't wait to see her in a VA panel. I bet she's going to get a lot of flak from her fellow VAs regarding her now-canonized impressions of the other characters. XD Also, it was great hearing her do both Dash and Applejack at the same time without letting them blend together too much. I'm sure that was pretty hard to do!
