    I don't care what anyone says, seeing the silly routines AJ developed over the years was worth it.

    Okay, here we go. Now, I know a lot of people are gonna hate this episode for many many reasons (most of which you explained already), but for me personally I very much enjoyed this episode and not for many of the usual reasons. I honestly found this episode speaking to me personally because all of the episode pretty much explained my work life.
    I've been working at a fast food restaurant as a cooking manager for 5 years and I've come to work on a built in routine I've set myself in that I'm comfortable in (just like AJ). When I first started there, I noticed a lot of the work the previous cook did was not necessary and pointed it out and fixed them to save time (again like AJ did). But when I took over, I started falling into a routine that, while it made sense to me, others didn't get it. All my faults were just recently put into my attention and while I immediately disagreed with them when I took a step back and evaluated my routine I stood dumbfounded that I didn't notice anything. Essentially it came around full circle (see where I'm going with this). So on a very personal level, I can see myself in Applejack's place in this episode which made the entire viewing a more pleasant and extremely ironic experience and I can appreciate the lesson more because I've lived through it.
    Now one more thing; about how the spa ponies were being irresponsible with their maintenance, yeah I can see that, but since I've had a similar experience I can see it happening. Our ice machine has been on the fritz for years but nothing has been done about it. We have a gimmick that makes it work at times but it's not a full proof thing and sometimes we find ourselves with no ice period. As I'm not a General Manager or higher I have no say in the matter but we have gotten used to it to the point where sometimes we just shrug our shoulders and grin and bear it and hope for the best.
    Well that was more about me than anybody would like to care, but I had to say it to get my points across. Sorry if came out more like a rant than anything. I know it seems like that most of what happened in this episode seems illogical but stuff like that happens way too often in the real world than we care to admit.

      I basically agree with everything you just said. It feels like you're basically echoing the thoughts running through my head when I did the commentary, but you seem to have done better at putting it into words than I did. Yes, it was an important lesson to learn, and it's something we all fall victim to at times. Sometimes we just don't see it, and other times we lack the power to actually fix the issue. The thing that bothered me about the specific scenario with the spa in this episode though is that unlike many real life situations, where people with the power to effect change either don't give a rip, or don't want to spend the money to fix the problem, the spa ponies appeared to be genuinely concerned about the comfort of and quality of treatment for their customers, so upon seeing that problem slowly get worse and worse, I felt like they should have done something about it before it got that bad.
      But whatever, it is what it is, and like you said, it's still relatable to some people, and quite honestly is for me too. I guess I'm just really bummed that rather than advancing AJ's character, they just did a cop-out of manufacturing a new character flaw out of thin air and resolving it in the same episode, which is EXACTLY the reason why so many people hated the older Spike episodes, because they did the same thing with him. I just really want to see some more depth added to AJ's character, because I feel like there's a lot more to her than we've been shown, and that she really just needs her moment to shine.

    Sooo, how was Rarity's horn floppy when she was "pruny"? I thought they were solid objects, or even actual bones. Especially in What About Discord when Discord was stroking Twilight and her horn kept on bouncing back. It's also just something expected to be solid, and I doubt the room was *that* steamy to make a bone-like part flop.

    • @starbrandfan2541
      @starbrandfan2541 3 роки тому +8

      Discord can do just about anything he can imagine, so it would sense for him to be able to do that to Twilight’s horn. I agree with the other instances though, it’s weird how they flop like that. There’s also that moment in the gabby gums episode where Sweetie Belle smacked Rarity’s horn so she would drop her bag, causing it to flop.

    X3 I must say, I'm very grateful for your videos man. The last few episodes were a bit much for me to sit though without cringing at the sheer WTF that happened from time to time. I first got into watching this show through blind reactions, and finding a blind commentary series with a host as easily amused as I am made it more easy to watch. I love hearing people laugh, and flip out, both of which you provide in abundance, making me a rather proud subscriber. KEEP GOING STRONG!!!!!!!

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      Wow, thanks so much for the kind words! I don't really feel like I do anything terribly special. I just try to have a good time and look for the positive messages this show brings. A lot of people seem to get hung up on things like "cringe" and other nitpicky things, and I just want to get people to look past that, because if that's all you see, you're missing out on a whole lot of awesome stuff.
      I must admit this particular episode was really hard for me, because I saw the intelligence of my favorite character being insulted for the purpose of telling a story with a rather weak moral point, but I'm doing my best to move past it, because I don't want to let it prevent me from not enjoying the rest of what is turning out to be the best season of the entire show.
      Anyway, I'm glad to hear that you are encouraged by my reactions. The knowledge that I've helped brighten up someone else's day makes the hours of work I put into these episodes feel worthwhile. :D

    Yeah, it was a little off, and maybe they could've done it in a more streamline way... heh...
    But even the most smartest people will never see their own problems. But if they are wise enough, or not so stubborn, when pointed out they will see where they went wrong and will change.
    Imagine if you will: "Applejack is too stubborn to relax". Of course, a stubborn streak did go in Applebuck Season, but what if she was stubborn enough to go back to her old habits?
    Forgoing some of the ridiculous habits played out (which maybe some farmers still do) it was a pretty good episode.

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому +1

      Well, Applejack wasn't doing this kind of stupid stuff in Applebuck Season. She simply was trying to do the entire harvest herself, which was way too much work for one pony to handle. Here she was COMPLETELY UNNECESSARILY making far more work for herself than was needed. Also, the one tiny bit of character growth I actually saw in Applejack in this episode was the fact that her stubbornness isn't as big of a problem, because she was ultimately quite receptive to all the help that her friends were offering, unlike in Applebuck season, so that's something at least. But yes, realism issues aside, it was still an okay episode, definitely some good funny moments, and I did like seeing her handyman nature and willingness to help get highlighted with the spa repair.

    It really is easy to get in a rut and I can see how some of those chores could get out of hand. Especially since I've had folks point out how inefficiently I'm doing my own chores. As for Twilight, she probably figured if the step was important enough for Applejack to spell out, then she had to do it exactly. It's not like Saddle Row Review where there was a goal and Rarity left it up to her friends to figure out how.

      Yeah, Applejack fans are few and far between, it seems. As for this episode, I guess between the incompetence forced on Applejack, and the apparent lack of any research regarding how farms really work (and given that I have a farming background), it is very difficult for me to like this episode. Again, I understand the point of the lesson, but the scenario they created to teach it leaves a lot to be desired. I know there's been controversy over other episodes, especially Newbie Dash, but for me personally, this one is really the only failure in season 6 so far. Maybe some day, like Spike, we'll finally get an Applejack episode that actually makes sense and allows her character to grow.

    Man this episode feels like it was a chore to watch, I figured having some time away with it would make me like it more (That's what happened with the season 6 premiere); but nope! The moral was very good, very excellent I'm not denying that, but what I am saying is that it was handled very poorly.
    Applejack was dumbed down, Twilight; you're a freaking Princess! An Alicorn! And I'm sorry AJ but I think you're wrong, while Twilight has never had proper farming training or anything of the like the fact that she can fly plus the fact that she can use magic should have made the process run much more smoothly but nope! Applejack can't fly or use magic and so Twilight didn't either; which I can sort of understand where she's coming from but why make it harder on yourself?
    If you have flight or have the ability to use magic why wouldn't you use it?! Ugh just no! No! Twilight was stupid, Applejack was dumbed down, the only logical one seemed to be Spike. Not only was the moral handled poorly and Twilight and Applejack were dumbed down but the episode had very little humor.
    At least with Newbie Dash while I cringed a lot there were parts that I laughed at! At least there I was interested in what was going on (despite how I was currently feeling about the episode) at least it kept me glued to the TV! But here with this episode I felt bored out of my mind; I figured that it would cut away to Twilight and Spike feeding the pigs but nope! We never got that cutaway, which was something that I was looking forward too since what Applejack was doing wasn't very interesting.
    There were only two times I laughed; it was when Applejack was imitating other animals and Rainbow being at the spa; but really that brings up a question: Why do the Apple family own pigs? What could they need them for? They don't eat meat so it can't be to cook them for bacon. But I'm getting off track here, sorry for the long list of complaints but I just couldn't help myself; just this episode bored me to tears; I actually wanted to bang my head on the desk.
    So yeah the moral was very good but the way it was handled was very poorly. Hopefully next weekend's episode will be better. Great reaction either way and can't wait for more! XD.

      You pretty much just echoed all my thoughts. XD My beef with Twilight is that she insisted on blindly following the ridiculous list, yet she pulled a complete 180 later and (along with Rarity) started pointing out all the issues to Applejack. I know logic is a very loose concept in this show, but there were just so many serious logic flaws in this one, it just drove me nuts. This episode basically was flawed in the EXACT same way the older Spike episodes were flawed. Only thing now is that Spike is actually being written well, and instead now Applejack was given the horrible manufactured character flaw. But yeah, just need to move past this and hope for a better episode for AJ later on. She really needs to get a chance to shine, as does Fluttershy, which is why I'm really looking forward to Flutter Brutter. Hopefully they don't drag her back down the way the did with AJ in this one.

    • @booklover4330
      @booklover4330 8 років тому +1

      Applegeek Oh boy I'm nervous about next weekend's episode; while I don't hate any of the mane six Fluttershy is my least favorite.
      To me it seems like any lesson she learns just gets pushed back so that the writers can teach her the same lesson over again; hopefully they write a great Fluttershy episode with Flutter Brutter, but I'm just extremely nervous because Fluttershy tends to learn the same lesson over and over again and it seems like with the synopsis that we'll be having a lesson similar to the episode It Ain't Easy Being Breezies. (Man I hate that episode).
      But back with Applejack while she isn't my favorite of the mane six (She's my second least favorite; please don't hate me!) But there are episodes of hers that I really like, Applebuck Season and The Mane Attraction come to mind.
      The Mane Attraction is probably AJ's best episode; she was great in that episode! Amazing in that episode! Loved her in it, I want an AJ episode like that where it focuses on all of her great traits.
      And yeah I wasn't even upset with AJ that she wanted to be the one to fix what was wrong with the spa, I'm pretty much the same way. When I see that there's something wrong I want to fix it, I want to help. So yeah wasn't upset with AJ because of that, it was everything else that I was upset with. So here's to hoping that next weekend's episode will be better! XD.

    Yes, this would have been a great episode if it was in an earlier season. But this one is coming after the Hearthwarming and Rarities innovative interview episode. And I would put the Hearthwarming episode in the top ten of all times. The bar as really been raised with this season.

      Yeah, that was a point I tried to make, in that it's all relative. I do, however, feel like the writing style in this episode belonged in an earlier season, not this one. I just thought we were past manufacturing absurd character flaws out of thin air, like they used to do all the time for Spike.

    I rather enjoyed this one sure its not one of the best episodes this season but its still good, and if her and Rarity have spa days I'm starting to think that AJ and Rarity may have been friends longer than the rest. this is not one of Applejack's best episodes, I'm hoping that she has another episode later in the season thats better than this one but thats just me, on a side note I consider her best episode to be the Mane Attraction, and I consider Sister Hooves Social to be her best moment being the one to help Rarity learn to be a better sister, nice reaction.

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it. I think I disliked this one perhaps a bit more than I should have for the same reason a lot of people hated Newbie Dash, in that my personal favorite character didn't seem to be getting the respect she deserved from the writers. At least with Newbie Dash though, there was clear character growth for Dash, whereas AJ just got a character flaw manufactured out of thin air and resolved in the same episode, the same way things always used to go for Spike. I like this episode for the entertainment value, but it fell very short in terms of offering any real character growth.

    Twilight was dumbed down, and what difference would it make? Family appreciation day... hmmm.... what difference could it make I wonder? She has a list that she follows in this episode, saddle row review, they didnt have a list, just did what they THOUGHT rarity wanted. You said it yourself. maybe there's a "Method to the madness". Obviously there wasn't, but how could Twilight know that?

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому +1

      What bugged me about Twilight was the point where Spike asked why she didn't just fly instead of hanging by the rope, and Twilight insisted on following the list exactly, without questioning its silliness in any way. Any way you look at it, hovering with her wings wouldn't have made a bit of difference in regards to the goal of getting the pigs fed, other than that she probably could have just done it quicker and thus would have accomplished something over the course of that hour. Also, after AJ and Rarity came back, Rarity and Twilight then immediately started pointing out all the problems with the way AJ was doing things. If Twilight could so easily question things at that point, why was she not questioning it earlier when trying to do the chores herself? Again, seems like a convenient lack of logical thinking just to give us the funny scene with her hanging from the rope. I know, I know, I'm probably over-thinking this way too much, just hard not to nitpick when I feel like my favorite character was given a decent chance to shine in this episode.

    • @assassin01620
      @assassin01620 8 років тому

      +Applegeek Well why didn't Applebloom question Granny Smith? Her methods appeared to be silly like Applejack's. Painting dots on the walls and talking to jars seemed pointless and would be faster and easier not to, but they were important. Twilight probably thought Applejack did these things for a reason hence the specific list. Which is why she questioned Applejack, THEN she learned that what Applejack's was doing was pointless.

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      Um, Apple Bloom DID question her, though not right to her face. In fact, she question Granny Smith's sanity altogether, and even attempted to bypass the process by trying to harvest the zap apples early, which didn't work so well. As always, you're welcome to your own opinion though. For me, if you insist on making my favorite character appear completely incompetent at her own job, then I'm gonna nitpick. ;)

    • @assassin01620
      @assassin01620 8 років тому

      +Applegeek Lol I understand, but I meant Applebloom questioning Granny Smith to her face so that she could tell Applebloom why it was necessary, but Twilight probably thought Aj had a reason (which she did just no longer relevant) and didn't want to ruin everything. Maybe using her wings could mess everything up, like if you don't pick the Zapp apples fast enough, they disappear. So she followed the list exactly. She did say Aj is an earth pony so I have to do it this way, but again "method to the madness" if you don't do it right, it's not gonna work.

    I don't feel like Applejack was dumbed down, she just got stuck in a routine that was comfortable and got so used to doing it that way that she didn't realize it was unnecessary once it's no longer relevant, even if it is ridiculous. It actually happens quite a bit, even to smart people.

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      I understand that it happens to all of us, but there are limits on how far you can push that. If they had kept it to one or maybe two larger issues, it wouldn't have been a big deal, but there were so many things AJ was doing "wrong" that it just became absurd. She's been running that farm for how long, and still hasn't seen the problem with any of those things she was doing? Yes, we can be blind to obvious things from time to time, but I just felt that this concept was pushed a bit too far in this case. But like I said, I'm not going to hold a grudge or anything, it was just an okay-ish episode that unfortunately offered no real growth for Applejack, which left me a bit disappointed. I will just look forward to the next one and hope they do better.

      A lot of this had to do with getting stuck in a routine, the pig feeding scenario was admittedly too much, but the other three were at least somewhat reasonable. Some of us do fall victim to doing things one-at-a-time. I can see Applejack seeing those three solutions as saving resources. Giving each individual chicken a specific portion of food may seem like fair to the chickens and lighter on the amount of food used. Watering one section at a time means not having all the pipes going for too long a period of time, though if only the first one turns the water on then ya, that's still a bit ridiculous but somewhat understandable. And the less fence Applejack used to fix the hole, the more they'd have for later. On the pigs' part I could see Applejack thinking they were conditioned to react to these specific stimuli, though I do think this lesson would've worked better much earlier in the series, and perhaps this was based on the plan for an earlier episode as well, I know episode 9 was and that one also made no mention of Starlight. So I'm thinking they thought they might be able to get away with a couple repurposed old episode plans this season to shorten the hiatus and let some previously rejected episodes be reworked so they could see the light of day. Twilight's actions do make sense in this context tho, she had received a list from a pony she believed knew what she was doing and trusted her to follow the list to the letter. Even if Twilight did question the list, she knew that deviating from it would be a breach of that trust and probably thought that Applejack had a reason besides not being an alicorn that this task had to be performed this way. The implication of a detailed list of instructions is that there is one correct way of doing a task and a ton of ways you could screw things up if you don't follow it implicitly. Remember when Rarity skipped a step while doing Cadence's mane because she thought it was optional? That ended up a disaster. With the last episode Rarity believed they had the right skills for their respective jobs and didn't bother to give them instructions because she trusted them. Applejack giving Twilight a list means she has a specific way she wants this done and she didn't write anything about flying or using magic even with Twilight in mind so it seems to me at least that she would've been upset if Twilight had used her wings even if the outcome were the same as if she'd gone through the whole routine. She needed somepony to point out to her that she was doing extra work. I kind of wish that the pigs did react to the gate at least tho, if it were squeaky for long enough they might've been conditioned to respond to the gate even when it didn't squeak, giving Applejack more reason to believe in the rest of this routine and there would be more reason for an outside perspective. They could've even had all the tasks work the same way Applejack said they would and come up with a simpler solution even given the difficulties the pigs would cause. In any case, I think this was a decent episode but even a small change could've made it better and still conveyed the same lesson. They could've conveyed the same lesson through the spa if they didn't bring up Applejack's workload issue. I do understand why they chose Applejack tho; she's the hard working pony in many of our eyes and has many daily chores around the farm, Rarity has too much of an eye for detail to be making these mistakes, doing unnecessary things is practically part of Pinkie Pie's charm, all the work Fluttershy does is feed and care for animals, Twilight doesn't have a daily thing she can't just stop doing to spend the day wih Rarity, and I'm sure Rainbow Dash's Wonderbolt training has set hours or dates if she's doing a show somewhere outside of Ponyville.

    You took the words right out of my words, It must have been quite embarrassing for any AJ fans to see her being portrayed in this light where she was holding the idiot ball. I also agree with you, I don't know if I'm with the problem but I don't remember when either RD or AJ started feeling comfortable enough with going to the SPA that it even became an usual routine. I don't think it is a world-ending slip of characterization, but it just goes against what I've got of how their personalities were.
    Also, it seems that the writers never agree with themselves when it's time to show Twilight's progress regarding her pseudo obsessive-compulsive disorder, there's sometimes when it seems she has advanced and doesn't commit the same mistakes she would have done in the past. But other times she still fails at doing the same exact things she has already surpassed. You should be aware by now what I'm talking about Applegeek.
    I also noted that Twilight frowned when she saw AJ's long list, why did that happen? Shouldn't she have had a mini-orgasm at seeing it? It was just the previous episode where she literally begged Rarity to let her organize her dresses. And in the first episode of this season we just watched her make a long list for Starlight's first lesson. This inconsistency of her likeness for organization with no explanation whatsoever bugs me -_-
    But yes, I agree that this episode is not really bad, but I wouldn't re-watching it unless it just happens to be the best choice possible when watching TV.

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому +3

      Yes, there were a number of issues in this episode in terms of character portrayals. I didn't really have a problem with AJ being a regular spa patron, kind of nice to see her embrace her feminine side a bit, and Rainbow Dash as well, thought that was much more shocking than AJ.
      As for Twilight I know exactly what you mean about the back and forth on her OCD for organization. It's like they can't make up their minds about how they want her to act in that regard. Regarding the list though, yes, she likes checklists, but given that it was related to manual labor tasks she was completely unfamiliar with, I can understand her having a bit of trepidation there. Her own checklists are representative of her own thought processes, which are familiar and comfortable, but being hit with a list made entirely by somebody else, someone with entirely different thought processes, can be intimidating. It was actually kinda fun to see, because she basically got a taste of her own medicine in that regard. :D
      The #1 issue though, obviously, is making Applejack so ridiculously incompetent at the job that is directly related to her special talent. Applejack already doesn't get much respect from a lot of people in the fandom, and this episode most certainly didn't help that image one bit. I keep rolling this around in my mind, trying to think about how this could have been written in a way that still teaches the message while not insulting her character.
      Running a farm, especially a small family farm, is tough. There's a lot to do, and help is in short supply. What I think they should have done is show just how hard she works to keep the farm running by having Twilight try to imitate legitimate farm chores without using any magic, which would have given Twilight (and hopefully some of the fans) more appreciation for just how hard AJ works. Then Twilight could have helped by creating some new devices to help automate some of the daily tasks. Some farmers hold strongly to tradition, and are slow to embrace new machinery and other technology, and I can definitely see Applejack not even having considered such solutions because they've done chores for the same way for so long, and there really wasn't a problem other than the amount of time it takes. Twilight and Rarity could have used the opportunity to open Applejack's eyes to the possibility of embracing some modern methods for handling daily chores, which would allow her to have a lot more time for her friends, as well as her family, thus making the point of this story in regards to sometimes needing an outside observer to show you a better way of doing things. Also, they could have used their magic to quickly build the new devices needed, accomplishing the feat in much less time than it would have taken Applejack to do on her own, even though she's good at building things.
      A scenario like that would have allowed both Applejack and Twilight to maintain their dignity, while also providing some decent character growth (rather than regression) for Applejack. I don't think Twilight would have come across as better at farming than Applejack either, because she could have failed at some of the chores without the aid of her magic, and could have knowledge from her studies about modern machinery that Applejack has simply never had the opportunity to learn about. Twilight herself has built some interesting contraptions on occasion, like the device to magically power the portal to Equestria in Rainbow Rocks, so it would've made sense to me.
      I just really wish the writers had properly researched farm life before writing this, because it feels like they basically just played to the negative stereotypes around farmers, where many view all farmers as simple, dim-witted country folk, for the sake of telling the moral of the story.

      Yeah, I get the angle of the younger audience, still feel like they could have done it better though. Instead of multiple ridiculous things, why not have just one or maybe two things to focus on, which would have given them more time to explain the issue, analyze it, and resolve it? There are plenty of episodes that are understandable for little kids, yet don't belittle the intelligence of the characters involved. Like I said though, I'm not bitter about it, just disappointed that AJ didn't really get any character growth, but instead got what was essentially an old-school Spike episode, in regards to manufactured character flaws.

    • @assassin01620
      @assassin01620 8 років тому

      Just throwing some things out there, but as far as I know, we never really seen AJ work other than bucking apples, making pie, and plow, until now so why are you so confident that Aj didn't have this problem? Also I would like to know what other character flaws Aj has that could be improved and give more character growth. You could consider Aj and Rarity getting along really well together character growth. :P

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      Well, for starters, I grew up on a farm, and know a thing or two about how things work on farms in real life. Any farmer doing chores the way AJ was doing them wouldn't be farming for long, because they'd waste all their time doing basic chores and never get any real work done. Also, helping hands are often in short supply, and farmers have to get creative with ways to improve efficiency in order to make things run smoothly. Real world comparisons aside though, Applejack has often done and said things that shows she has a lot of common sense, not to mention wisdom about a lot of things, so to suddenly turn around and throw her common sense out the window like this is a bit of an insult to her character.
      It's no secret that the farm often keeps Applejack quite busy. What I think would have been a much more believable scenario, not to mention more respectful, is to have Twilight attempt to actually do the chores the way they should have been done in the first place, though without using her magic (in order to experience them the way Applejack would), which would have given her a lot of insight into just how hard Applejack actually works in order to keep the farm running smoothly. Then she and Rarity could have helped design and build some things to help automate some of the daily chores, in order to lighten the workload and free up some of her time for other things.
      That would have been a far more accurate portrayal of how things really work on family farms, as farmers often invent all manner of crazy contraptions in order to complete common, repetitive tasks with minimal effort and manpower. The lesson of the story would still work too, because it could have simply amounted to Applejack failing to see that there might be ways to improve efficiency, and failing to ask her friends for help with that, as opposed to constantly apologizing for missing out on things. The main difference would be that she wouldn't have had to look totally incompetent in the process, and Twilight wouldn't have had to look like a moron by following such a ridiculous list of instructions.
      As for flaws that Applejack needs to improve on, it's true that there's not a whole lot of glaring issues to focus on there. However, there have been things we've seen from time to time that suggest that there are things in Applejack's past that have had a major impact on her life. Since she's already living out her life goal of tending the farm, I had really hoped the writers would dive more into AJ's past this season in order to further develop her character, by showing us hardship she's already endured, and the lessons learned from it. Case in point, the way she went into hyper-overprotective mode with Apple Bloom in Somepony to Watch Over Me was such an out-of-character moment that I couldn't help but think that there was something in her past (most likely in regards to her parents) that was weighing heavily on her conscience. We did get to see a bit of AJ's past when Coloratura showed up, which is partly why I like that episode so much, but I still feel like we're missing a lot of backstory. The issue of the parents is really at the top of my wish list, but at this point any backstory on the Apple family would be gold for me.

      btw don't forget that while this show likes to raise the bar and overstep it's boundaries from time to time, it's still a light hearted show and likes to make jokes, and not make things to serious. You know, balance. In my opinion hearth's warming tail was kind of serious, so it's nice to have a calm, laid back, and funny episode. :3

I had low expectations going in based on previous AJ episodes, but even that was too high. My wish was for the many AJ haters to gain some insight and appreciate her character, like Gauntlet of Fire did for Spike. He got a lot more respect after that episode.
    The spa scenes were my favorite because it showed AJ at her best. Would AJ go to a spa for relaxation? Doubt it but that is nitpicking. To each their own. But there is no way that she would need farming lessons, by non-farming ponies. The moral is good and true to life but there was no need to "dumb-down" AJ to tell it. It could have been better if the farm wasn't in montage form and she explained why she did things the way she did. For example perhaps she once had a chicken that had special dietary needs so it had to be fed separate but no longer does. I got nothing for the irrigation or chicken wire repair. AJ is not the smartest of the ponies, but she has the most common sense. With Twilight's book smarts, she probably has the least common sense, but instead had to teach AJ on that. GRRR! The more I think on this episode, the angrier I get.

      I agree Applejack did explain why she did all those things when feeding the pigs, but i wish she explained why she did the fence, irrigation and feeding the chickens in different ways instead of it being a montage, Applejack is my favorite pony and that will never change, I just wish we will get an really good AJ episode.

      Okay, I'm finding the range of comments on the video to be hilarious. I've got some people who aren't AJ fans actually trying to defend her against my negative comments, and then I've got fellow AJ fans who don't think I got mad enough. XD
      I never hated this episode, and I still don't. Applejack did get a moment to shine in the spa, and we got some other awesome bits like the face melt, Dash getting busted, and the chicken dance, which I think is hilarious! I just really wish they had made the effort to present some kind of realism, especially after how realistic Newbie Dash ended up being (not just my opinion, know somebody in the military who agreed with that assessment).
      But yeah, like I've said in other comments, this was essentially an old-school Spike episode, where instead of being allowed to see Spike grow and shine, he seemed to always go backwards in intelligence and do stupid things. Now we finally see Spike being written well, but AJ is still getting treated poorly. Like you said, I'm really wanting to see the writers do something awesome with Applejack so that she will finally get some respect (getting rather tired of her being called background pony), and be able to show us what she's really all about. Sure, she lacks significant life goals, but her past is almost completely unexplored. Lots of missed opportunities, I think.

    • @applejoy4411
      @applejoy4411 8 років тому +1

      I can tell you never hated the episode, mainly cause there were scenes you enjoyed like the ones you mentioned, and I agree Applejack getting called a background pony is getting old, and like you said Applejack's past is still unexplored we know nothing about her past except she left the farm to live with her aunt and uncle, and she went to camp with Rara, learning more about her past and how she dealt with the loss of her parents would add more to her character, and would probably make people appreciate her more, she is the most mature and level headed member of the mane 6 I see her as the back bone of the group she keeps them focused and brings out the best in others, it just seems some writers just don't know how to right her.

    This was a nice Ep. ^^ Not perfect, but fine. My biggest complaint is why did the other Apples have to be away? I mean, if they were here would Twi and Spike be done with the pigs long before AJ and Rarity got back and thus no lesson is learnt?
    Btw funny you mentioned most of the same stuff I did, my let watch will be up tomorrow (render overnight, and upload overnight, why? IT-TAKES-HOURS!)

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      I didn't have a problem with the rest of the family being away, it happens. If anything, while AJ could have been blinded to at least some of the things she was doing, I find it hard to believe that none of her family members could see all the problems either. This was a character flaw conveniently manufactured out of thin air for the purpose of teaching the lesson, plain and simple, and unfortunately AJ's character got stuck with it.

    • @cody2819
      @cody2819 8 років тому

      Applegeek
      And there lies the problem, wouldn't the other Apples ask why she does all the un-needed stuff she did? Are they stuck in a cycle of doing stuff that just makes what their doing take longer?
      Sure if they were there than sure one would had helped Twi feed the pigs before AJ gets back. This flaw might had been out of thin air, but it raises questions about the other 3 Apples as well. Why hadn't they ever caught AJ doing this if it shouldn't take her so many hours?
      P.S my let watch was uploading but youtube is froze at 61%, darn it all this is why I upload overnight. >_> Gonna have to cancel and retry tonight, it usually takes about 8 hours or day to upload, well over 350 minutes.

      Wow, that's it? I would've thought you would be bothered more by this one. XD Oh well. Having had some time to let it simmer, I have to say I did really like this episode overall. Applejack definitely had a moment to shine with her work in the spa, and I see that she's outgrowing some of her stubbornness, or at least has learned when it's good to be stubborn, and when to accept help. After seeing the realism in Newbie Dash though, I just wish the writers had had enough respect for the farming community to at least try to create a realistic problem with the chores.

      Ooh, good ones. You know, I was trying to think about how to answer the question "what would I have done different?" We know from past episodes that chores on the farm take a LOT of AJ's time, to the point where she's had to miss special things at school for Apple Bloom and such. Instead of inventing ridiculous things like this, why not just have the standard chores be that time-consuming, and have Twilight and Rarity help by actually come up with a new idea about how to automate something?
      For example, if feeding the animals (in a manner you would actually find on a real farm) was taking a lot time to do by hand...er, hoof...then it would have been cool to have Twilight and Rarity come in and help build some kind of automated feeder system that required much less effort. Heck, I can even imagine that being something that Applejack had been thinking about, because she's great at building stuff, but just never had the time to build herself, because again, just keeping up with the chores was...a chore. XD
      Of course the problem there is that that would have deviated from the actual lesson of the episode. Still though, there was just one big issue in the spa, so I wish they would have just focused on one or two things on the farm, which would have given them more time to explain and deal with the problems rather than a bunch of little silly things that made no sense.
      Anyway, yeah, was nice to meet you at MWBF. Too bad you couldn't stay for the whole weekend. Not sure if you saw it or not, but on Saturday, I was able to pull off a group photo with all the Apple family VAs! I posted it on my Twitter account: twitter.com/applegeek83/status/736999826265493504

    03:40 WTF did I just see? o_______O What has been seen, cannot be unseen :/
    (Well, at least now we know how Rarity looks like without her makeup :P Thank Celestia that Spike haven't seen her like this :P )
    04:12 Conspiracy theory: What if Granny Smith visits this sauna too often, and if she didn't, she wouldn't look so old? :D
    06:58 Yeah.... Being able to follow a list is not exactly the same as being able to do what the list says...
    07:25 I wonder how much Valve paid Hasbro for this crypto-commercial ;J (well, Gabe Newel is a Brony, so... ;J )
    07:40 Pretty much like all of my mother's cooking recipes :P
    09:08 Looks like the writers forgot that Rainbow Dash doesn't allow anypony to touch her hooves :P
    09:56 Phew, she turned her head just in time... otherwise her horn would stuck in that stallion's butthole :|
    11:06 BWAHAH that pouty face right there! :D :c :D
    11:30 Yeah... Now we know where most of their bits go... "Folow the yellow brick road"...
    11:33 Best Applejack part starts here.
    13:55 Applejack's plumbing network scan like a pro hacker.
    14:34 Now replace steam with money and you've got the financial system in the Human World ;J (or pretty much everything in Human World)
    14:45 Yup. The writers made the spa ponies look terribly dumb in this episode :/
    14:49 What's with Rarity looking ugly so often in this episode? :P
    15:00 Steampunk Appleyak :)
    15:23 OK, this scene... with a bit of censorship blurring at the right spot it would look terribly improper :q
    15:56 Appleyak as a spa pony - that would be fun to watch :D
    17:27 Oh, I hoped so badly that Appleyak put all those weird things on that list to troll Twilight Sparkle, the actual feeding the pigs being the last item on it ;J That would be epic karma feedback ;D
    17:35 Looks like feeding the pigs is a real mission impossible ;J (all with string hanging and background music ;J )
    18:48 And now the best Appleyak part in the episode becomes the worst Appleyak part in the entire series... ;°
    19:41 Appleyak, are you hearing yourself right now?
    19:54 Well, pretty much every Human World system ever :P Especially true for computer code...
    20:55 It's not just Appleyak. Remember how Granny Smith makes her zap apple jam? ;q
    21:21 Yup, Appleyak needs to learn some computer science, especially about parallel execution.
    22:00 I was asking myself the same exact question ;P Looks like the writers really hate Applejack ;/ because they made her look dumb as phuck in this episode :( I mean, it's like she sucked royally at farming through her entire life! And even Twilight and Rarity could do it better ;P Especially the plumbing scene is very inconsistent, because in the spa she could figure out somepony else's plumbing system entirely in her head and fix it all well, but here she cannot fathom a simple plumbing made of 5 pipes at most ;o I can try to comfort myself that this system started as just one pipe, then she added another pipe in parallel but forgot to update her routine (which worked after all), and same with every next pipe. But this is not very plausible if she is good at plumbing anyway. Hasbro, please don't let those writers write, because this way we will learn from the next episode that Rarity cannot sew, Fluttershy cannot care about animals, and Twilight Sparkle has a short memory and cannot add 2+2 :/
    23:23 Oh, right, and that Rainbow Dash always dresses in style, and cannot live with her froo-froo hooficure :P Almost forgot about that... ;/
    22:40 Yup, that's why open source rulz and closed source droolz :>
    24:24 OK. Now I'm counting on you to explain this episode to me in a way that I didn't though of it as the worst Appleyak episode ever :/ Oh pleease say something good about it ;(
    26:16 Yeah, but in that episode ("Family Appreciation Day" BTW) there was some sense in this "madness" at the very least.
    30:50 Exactly. And therefore she should be more in a position to fix her own problems too. She just cannot be _so_ dumb to not able to see that her pigs aren't scared of her anymore, or that feeding all the chickens at once would make gathering the eggs more efficient. And the plumbing thing was just the straw that broke the pony's back for me ;/ because it pretty much contradicted the entire first half of the episode.
    41:50 Yup, and Twilight didn't notice all the ridiculous details as well :P But then, at the end of the episode, she was suddenly able to fix all of Applejack's problems :P

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      Wowzers, heck of a list this time! Once again reading this too late to actually respond to it all, but I hope you found something in my commentary to make it not as bad. Unfortunately I really struggled with this one. In a nutshell, this episode was good in terms of entertainment value, but was absolutely HORRIBLE in terms of Applejack's character. This was basically an old-school Spike episode that got written for AJ instead of Spike. Newbie Dash may have had cringe, but it still made sense and showed good growth for RD. This episode has plenty of cringe for AJ, and gave us NOTHING for her character, other than that she pretty much fails at basic farm chores. If she has the mechanical know-how to analyze and fix the problem in the spa, there is no reason why she couldn't have "fixed" the stupid things she was doing for chores. Also, even if you can believe that, I can't believe that NONE of her family members ever pointed out the flaws in her routine either. They can't ALL be that blind! But whatever, this episode is over, time to just move on and hope for a better one next weekend.

    The fence patching one bothers me. It is VASTLY more efficient and less time consuming and easier (If you don't have magic, like in RL) to patch a hole in the fence, rather then being wasteful and expend the more time and effort to replace an entire section.

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      Yeah, I know what you mean. Regarding the repair of replacing the whole section, sure, Twilight and Rarity made it look easy with their magic, but that would have been much harder and taken much longer for earth ponies than just doing the patch.

    • @TheLostBear78
      @TheLostBear78 8 років тому

      What I wouldn't give to be able to grab these fence posts I am installing RL right now, and just magic force push them into the ground, rather digging holes first. Being an earth pony has real disadvantages, not that those two could understand.

    • @TheLostBear78
      @TheLostBear78 8 років тому

      That would actually make for a good story maybe! Some unicorn through some bad accident lost their magic power, now has to relearn how to live life, as basically a poor quality earth pony.

    • @applegeek2597
      @applegeek2597  8 років тому

      Well, earth ponies aren't without any form of magic, of course. I've actually had a working theory for a while now about how hooves work, which I may as well take a moment to actually type out.
      I'm sure you've seen the picture that shows the fan theory regarding how pony magic is concentrated in different areas of the bodies of the different races. Unicorns have magic concentrated largely in their heads, which provides spell casting ability by channeling the energy through their horns, and likely also aids in study and mental exercises, which is why many unicorns become scholars. Pegasi have the magic concentrated more in their midsection and wings for flying. Earth ponies have their magic more heavily focused in their hooves, the idea being that they are good at making the earth produce its goods, like crops, flowers, etc., among other things.
      Now, for my theory. Earth ponies appear to be at a severe disadvantage, because unicorns can use telekinesis, and pegasi can use their wings almost like fingers and/or hands. But, keep in mind that we've seen earth ponies like Applejack and Pinkie Pie do plenty of crazy things with hooves that they shouldn't be able to do. With all that magic concentrated in their hooves, it got me thinking, what if they actually have an inherent ability to attract things to their hooves, somewhat like a magnet, but a force that works with anything, not just metal? It's not like The Force from Star Wars, rather is something that would be a very close-range ability, most likely requiring direct contact in most cases. That would certainly explain how they can pick up things that they shouldn't normally be able to grip, like Applejack with her hat, and Pinkie with her kitchen utensils, even Octavia with her cello bow. Heck, that even explains their bowling alley, because they certainly don't have hoof-size holes in the bowling balls. And yes, they do still use their mouths for a lot of things too, but that's understandable, given that they actually have to walk on all of their hooves, so it isn't always convenient to use their hooves like hands in this manner.
      Assuming all the above to be true, they could also be capable of the opposite, a repel-type force. That would explain why apple bucking works the way it does. Kicking the trees hard enough to get the apples to fell should, in theory, damage the trees, but if there's a magical repel force involved, perhaps the repel force can be directed through the tree and into the stems, rather than just the trunk of the tree taking the entire force of the hit. And don't forget about how Coloratura can play the piano, which would involve refinement of the repel force to the point where she can direct the force at individual keys to make them press down without actually mashing her hooves into them.
      This is something that all ponies are capable of, and we see all the races using their hooves in this manner at some point or another, but earth ponies are the best at it because of the way their magic is concentrated and because they lack spell casting and wings to make up the difference. If a unicorn were to lose his/her spell casting ability, they would have to work hard over time to refocus their magic energy more into their hooves to be able to compensate. It would likely be easier for pegasi if they lost their wings, since they have some focus there already for the cloud walking ability. Scootaloo is actually a fairly good example of this, given that she can't (yet) fly, and that her wings are too small to really be useful as hand-like appendages for the most part. Bulk Biceps has similar issues.
      Anyway, that's my theory. Maybe it will give you some inspiration for a fan fic. :D

    • @TheLostBear78
      @TheLostBear78 8 років тому

      +Applegeek Actually haven't seen that picture, but it sounds valid to me. And I did specify that she would be a poor quality earth pony, not a normal magically endowed earth pony with their "strength" and everything else they need for tending the land.
      I will reread your writing here in the morning when I am more awake. :)

    To me, the scenes with RD were light character building. It is showing that she is starting to relax and show her soft side. And now she gets to experience some pampering with her closest friends. Its progress.
