I think a lot of people miss the fact that the changelings are likely getting used to feeling emotions rather than feeding on them. Remember craft pot changeling? 'I used to (have concerns) but craft time has given me such a creative outlet, I feel much better now.' It seems like they're struggling with anxiety, and displaying emotions with any amount of regulation, which would explain their constant bi-polar yelling and interest in simple activities. They're creatures with emotion-based magic - I think it's fair to assume there's side effects they have to overcome after changing their bodies and entire society.
There's also the fact that Chrysalis never let them be individuals. That's why they're having such a renaissance, right now.
Like you said, they went from one extreme to the other. I don't think it's so much their fault as it's a repercussion of their drastic change of nature. They feel emotions, share emotions, now, instead of eating it. That's something to get used to.

These are my thoughts, enjoy them:
This episode was great as it discussed how the changelings are adapting to their new lives as well as the many hidden morals.
1, the leadership of Thorax that you lightly touched on intrests me too.
2, the disedence between the changelings adds to their characters as a swarm but each individuals.
3, how even a peaceful nation has to learn to defend themselves to keep that peace alive. You can't have peace in this world without learning to defend yourself from others trying to shatter that peace.
4, Starlight admitting being a dictator opens her character arc up even more, being able to relate to others with the same background. More info of why I have grown to love Starlight more than any other of the main cast.
5, if all the changelings have been reformed to Thorax's knowledge, how does Chrysalis plan to take her revenge? And what do the changeling young look like now?
I like to think the Changelings like butterflies. They start as a larva (Old Changelings) and they only transform into a butterfly (New Changelings) after their set free from their cocoon (Share their love). The only weird thing is that this transformation is optional (I don't know if a butterfly transformation is optional, since they only transform through a cocoon)
The weird thing is that I thought the new eggs were laid by the Queen Chrysalis, so I'm not sure how they would grow the pack now. (Maybe that slight difference between female and male changelings is actually relevant, and would point that they can both reproduce through Asexual and Sexual Reproduction)
I really like how Trixie behave with Thorax. She is pretty bitchy and says what she thinks without caring what others would think about her. But she is a little delicate with Thorax in this episode and this is so adorable!

Applegeek maulwarph apparantly is derived from a german word, used to describe a mole or burrowing creature. While I do take offense to using a german word to describe an evil creature, I can see where it might also be seen as a creative outlook on names, incorporating cultures into the show.

Does anyone else want to know what Ex-Queen Chrysalis, would look like if she transformed?
Update: I think y'all got a little confused, I don't think she needs to transform in the series. That would bee too much, but I would love to see some concept art or maybe even creative fan art. Of what she could possibly look like as a transformed Changeling.
It would be interesting but I hope she would not. Besides Thorax is having hard times being a leader and I was worried that this is a hint that he will gave his leadership to her. But after Pharynx transformation I was kind of relieved.
Interesting, sure, but considering just how amazingly good her original design is, I'm sure no matter what they did it would be a downgrade.
If they somehow manage to reform Chrysalis, then I'm guessing the following options would happen:
1. Thorax is gonna have to give back his leadership to her, since she's more experienced with leading the changelings, which would be a bad idea, since they can't just give someone all the power who was a villain for a very long time. She could abuse that power.
2. She's gonna become a third rank leader like Cadance.
3. The hive is gonna split into two two part
4. She's gonna get down ranked to a regular changeling, which is I think very unlikely.
5. She's gonna become a student of Thorax like how Starlight became a student of Twilight & how Discord became a student of Fluttershy.
These are all the possibilities I can think of. The only thing I hope for the best is that they won't ruin her awesome design. Please Hasbro just let us have one changeling that has a sick design.
The problem with not eventually transforming is that eventually, if she doesn't, there is only one thing that can happen to her at the end of her story. They'll have to do something more permanent to her. Like death or permenently turned to stone.

I really enjoyed this episode, I love Thorax's brother, he's great. And the new design for Thorax's brother is a lot better in my opinion then Thorax and the other Changelings, a lot more subtle in the colors. Trixie was great in this, loved her one liners; normally I get annoyed but I ended up laughing at her antics more then I thought I would. Starlight of course was great in this as well, a lot of great moments between the characters. Great reaction and can't wait for more! XD.

"The Times They Are a Changeling" [S6E16]: It is a case of "show, do not tell"; she was the first pony who expressed understanding with her eyes in the middle of Spike´s song [when he was talking about "darkness becoming light"].
"Every Little Thing She Does" [S6E21]: Even more of "Show, do not tell", since it took the whole coldstart to establish she is more powerfull than Twilight [and then a bit more about mixing spells]; her aparent casual psycopathy about mindraping her "friends" (explicitly pointed out by Twilight, Spike and the hangover!manefive ) makes it completely redundant to say "also she was evil once, and could do the same stuff again"; because the episode itself did it better.
[Season 7]
"Fluttershy Leans In" [S7E05]: She was not there in the original story (written by G.M.Berrow as an independent MLP book), as it predates Josh Haber "great idea" of reforming Meghan McCarthy´s second best villain.
-> She was added there by the animators as a freebie cameo.
"Fame and Misfortune" [S7E14]: The first draft of this story (wrote by Mitchell Aaron Larson back in 2014 for the second block of S5), has Spike doing all the plot-relevant lines of Starlight.
-> It is rather suspicious how she suddendly wanted to remain with Rarity instead of following Twilight [or why she would even think about those two random fillies when she has not meet even 1% of the adult population of Ponyville yet (going by S6E06 & S7E04)]; those behaviors and social conections fit him better.
Since she was not part of the original story, normal considerations about her character development were ignored (alongside Spike´s participation in the events related to the lessons in the book, as he has written some of his own).
You also forgot Shadow Play (MLP FIM S7 Finale)

Nice list. Without reviewing actual dialogue, I would argue that A Royal Problem sort of counts, because the actions Starlight took were the result of those experiences, but I admit that's stretching it a bit. In any case, it's definitely a recurring theme. Of course it makes sense for it to be, but I hope that they're able to move past that and add more depth to Starlight's character, because as great as she is, I don't want to see her entire character defined by that one evil deed. There's gotta be more to her than that.
The hilarious banter really made this episode shine, as did the moral that neither side was entirely in the right/wrong.
Regarding the issues you talked about toward the end, its important to remember that a lot of the protests and fights we see on the news are ultimately just a very vocal minority rather than a reflection of how society is as a whole. Its just that the most vocal (and sometimes violent) people tend to get the most attention.
Hey, didn't the one with Big Mac and Sugar Belle also have none of the Mane 6?
Plus this is the first episode to not have the Mane 6 OR the CMC. Or any other long standing characters like Big Mac, Spike, or the Princesses.
And it was really good. This will probably drive Starlight haters crazy. Knowing that she can make good episodes without the Mane 6.
titan hades Technically Trixie is one of the first characters seen on the show, but I know what you mean. She wasn’t even seriously recurring until season 6 anyway.
So refreshing to see someone else enjoy the new Changelings. Sure I wish their change had been more progressive and I would have liked to see a mix of old/new Changelings living together, but they're so loveable altogether. Love what they did with them.

Kind of hope a future episode addresses Trixie's problem of taking Starlight's friendship for granted the way she does. She does tend to push this stuff too far.
Starlight could begin to wonder if it's even worth it anymore to be friends with Trixie, when she has other like Maud to hang around with.

julie martinez This may sound strange but you just gave yourself the solution to the "problem" the both of you brought up. If Starlight doesn't really care and is used to Trixie's personality to a point where she can not only accept it but also embrace it then there isn't really a lesson to be learned. They get along well enough as their interactions, while different from what we usually see from the main cast, work well to the point where they're obviously close friends even though an outsider may see it differently.
This point being that if Starlight likes Trixie and her weirdness then why would she feel that Trixie is taling advantage of her friendship, especially when it was covered in the second episode of the season. If that were the case then Star wouldn't take jabs at Trixie to get back at her for the shenanigans she brings. That's a genuine friendship right there
Except Trixie does things that could legtimitely get Starlight in trouble somewhere down the road(like shifting the blame) while taking all the credit.
This is something that does have to be addressed. Otherwise Starlight could end up getting hurt and it would end up Trixie's fault.
You don't think much of it till it does happen. Remember the old saying, It's all fun and games until someone loses an eye.
titan hades Except that it actually was just "fun and games". It was nothing but comedic writing and none of it was taken seriously enough to be a genuine problem as Starlight did in fact caused problems on her own and Trixie "shifting blame" and "taking credit" can be summed up as unnecessary commentary on the situation that was just used for comedy's sake without being overbearing in basically the same way Spike was in Winter Wrap Up to Twilight with his comments. Although in that case that was just a child having fun with the situation but then again, Trixie isn't exactly the most mature pony out there which also adds to the overall humor of their antics.
It would be problematic if it actually added to the conflict but it never once did. Had it, then the episode would've addressed it properly which is why we get nothing of the sort here. That's just how their banter works and not so much as what you claim it to be. If Trixie's outbursts were to actually cause trouble then I guarantee it would be addressed almost immediately in order to be done and over with quickly lest it provides a continuity error regarding the second episode of the season.
Starlight and Trixie agreed to be honest with each other if one was truly bothering the other so if such a situation happened once more amd created a drawn out conflict then it would run the risk of going back on that episode's lesson all for the sake of a now imaginary issue. It is most definitely not something that needs to be addressed for a second time. No offense, but you read the dynamic wrong since if it were a problem, it would've been treated as a problem right from the get go
I see this as them building to an episode where they address the issue. MLP is getting really good at that.
Because on that last episode where this happened they never really addressed it. That one was more for Starlight and her learning not to bottle up her emotions and talking with her friends when she has a problem with them.
Trixie didn't learn anything.. And has yet to suffer the consequences for not learning it.
Starlight mentioned the problem to Trixie, but nothing was resloved when it comes to it.
Trixie has to learn it if she is to have anymore friends. Because most ponies wouldn't good naturedly put up with her bull**it.

Interesting, Pharynx always looked different than the other changelings. His eye color and it looks almost like his wings were close to what Thorax's where in Where and Back Again even as a grubb, was he always a royal?

After seeing this reaction I got a bit of a Demolition Man vibe around the feelings forum scene where it became evident that the Changelings may have gone too far towards being kinder and gentler. Then it struck me: I now know what those 3 shiny things on some of the Changelings' necks are. Those are the 3 seashells.
I loved how excited you were in this reaction. It is a really fun episode. With great dialogue.

I mostly ask because this season isn't really, IMO, as good as the other ones, but I'm genuinely curious as to why a lot of people say this one's the best.
the spear could be used for combat against the maulwurf or invaders and the thorns could be made into an attack net and being scary and intimidating can help make enemies surrender easier so that makes pharynx a pretty good changeling general

I actually really like Trixie. IMO she is that egotistical and sarcastic because she is a very anxious and self-conscious pony. I think it’s a facade that she has built up for years and it’s like a mask she forgot she is wearing.

Boomerang or someone in the DHX/Hasbro is throwing together the remaining episodes(2 to the weekend) before the showing of the My Little Pony - Movie coming out on Oct. 6th. I for 1 with my wife will be seeing it at the Loews Theater some 10 miles from my home. I wonder if the movie theater or the people that made the movie will be having a give-a-way for the 1st showing?
Your analysis skills are amazing! I can only imagine you getting a 5 if you were to take the AP Language & Composition Exam for 2020. It was only a rhetorical analysis essay, basically doing what you do but with added vocab to specify what elements the author uses.
They may like you to use the technical words and stuff, but honestly, it's more about the analysis, which is exactly what you do. Without even needing to use the words tone, pathos, logos, ethos, allusion, ect you can describing just that. By saying something is a reference to (insert pop culture thing) without using the word allusion, its clear you already do this kind of stuff!

As we all saw today, we Changelings may have chosen a path of peace, but that's no excuse for us to show weakness when it comes to defending our home! Do you think you have what it takes to defend The Hive?
Changelings: Yes sir.
Pharynx: What's that? I thought I heard a swarm of butterflies. I said, DO YOU THINK YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES TO DEFEND THE HIVE!!?
Changelings: YES SIR!!
Pharynx: Oh really? 'Cause from what I saw, you ladybugs couldn't defend an anthill! As captain of the newly established Changeling Guard, it's my job to make warriors out of you grubworms! Your exoskeletons will ache! Your eyes will be bloodshot! And your wings will be struggling not to fall off! But, you WILL be the strong and fierce swarm this Hive needs, or you will flutter back to your sissy little "Feelings Forum" and cry to your mommies!
Changeling (whispers to the changeling next to him): So, is he going to train us or just yell at us the whole time?
(Pharynx marches up to the Changeling and glares sternly at him)
Pharynx: Did you just say something, cadet?
Changeling: (shakes nervously and gulps) Uh...N-no, sir.
Pharynx: Good. Because I'll expect no whining, crying, complaining, OR insubordination from ANY changeling in my guard unit. (Looks up at the rest of the cadets) That goes for all of you too! UNDERSTAND?!!
Changelings: SIR, YES SIR!
(Just then, Thorax, Starlight Glimmer and Trixie approach)
Starlight: Hey Pharynx!
(Pharynx spots the three and instantly stands at attention)
Pharynx (salutes): Captain Pharynx of the Changeling Guard reporting, Sir!
Thorax: Heh-heh. At ease, Pharynx. Starlight and Trixie are heading back to Ponyville and they wanted to see you before they leave.
Starlight: Wow, Captain of the guard. That's quite a responsibility.
Pharynx: Yeah. But someone has to get these grubs into shape. When I'm done with them, not even a fire-breathing dragon will want to mess with us.
Thorax: I'm just glad that you finally have a place in the Hive, bro. And I'm proud that you weren't ready to give up on yourself (looks over at Starlight and Trixie in question) unlike some ponies.
Trixie: Well, this has been an exciting, and unnerving, experience. But the Great and Powerful Trixie (and her assistant) need to be going. (starts walking off)
Starlight: Yep, so long! Good luck with the new guard, Pharynx! Bye, Thorax (Follows Trixie)
(Thorax and Pharynx wave goodbye to Starlight and Trixie, then Thorax turns to Pharynx)
Thorax: Well, I better get back to maintaining peace and order in the Hive. Carry on, Captain Pharynx!
(The two salute each other and Thorax flies back to the Hive. Putting on a stern face, Pharynx turns back to the sixteen recruits)
Pharynx: Alright ladybugs, no more standing around! We'll start our training by doing fifteen laps around the Hive! (Blows whistle)
(With a collective groan, the changeling recruits begin galloping around the entire Hive)
Pharynx: Come on, this isn't an evening stroll! Pick it up! Let go! Move-Move-Move!
(Far away, Starlight and Trixie look back to see Pharynx training the Changelings. They look at each other with proud smiles then continue on their way back to Ponyville)
The only things I have left on my wish list for this season is an episode about the dragons and one involving the griffins.

I haven't watched your full reaction yet, but I just wanted to bring this up: Between Ember saying Thorax needs to be more assertive, and now his brother...I am just so happy with how so many lessons in this season are about how the Men, need to Man Up....I mean, in a show that is as girl power as mlp, it's really refreshing, especially in today's climate, that they are putting these messages in. ^^ And it's not even directed specifically at boys and men, but the characters the message is portrayed to, Thorax in this case, are male. so, yay? ^^

Kinda wish the changeling hive before changing...had some extra forms. We had regular changelings and we had changelings with armor(the one outside the chrysalis throne room)...thoraxs brother obviously was a different type too,possibly a soldier compared to a drone, and we know what grubs(newborns) looked like. Check,kinda wish the BIG thing thoraxs brother turned into was a changeling form...with the queen that would make 6 at least,making it more Hive like...
I'm still wondering what differences the new ones have. I mean besides some having almost solid colors,some having no horns at all,while some horns are unicorn style horns rather than the curved horns.I also notice a rare channeling or two who's just got a beetle wing cover on their back,but unlike the others,no wings slightly deployed.then we have thorax and his brother.....so many curious differences.

You're right about differing viewpoints. I'm political, and I see this all the time. On this note, I did want to mention that I did feel rubbed the wrong way by Thorax's line about the 'old days.' Being so political, I constantly struggle with what I and others think is valuable about the past, as well as what we need to move on from. In other words, 'don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.' But in this case Thorax was right. And they did realize by the end that they still needed to defend themselves, though that's not exactly valuing the past. I like the fact that such rational people are on the show staff.
"Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it." "Hindsight is always 20/20." There is much value in what happened in the past, much wisdom to be gleaned. There is a necessary balance that must be achieved though. Some people refuse to change at all, which is not good because everybody needs to learn and grow, and growing requires change. Others blindly rush towards change simply for the sake of change, thinking everything needs to be fixed, while refusing to learn from the past, and ultimately end up making things worse because they don't honestly know what needs to be changed or why. Ultimately, while we cannot live in the past, we must take care to learn from it, or else we will doom ourselves to making the same mistakes over and over and over.
