- Over the years I have been asked by a few people to do some spring powered hunting videos, so I managed to get myself Weihrauch HW97K-T Synthetic. I started out hunting with a spring powered HW80 air rifle as many others did and after years of using PCP powered air rifles I wanted to get back to a spring powered gun again so this is my look at the HW97.

This is most excellent, I think 90% of us own springers and love them. The economy is a little ruff to get started up in PCP for most of us. I just got one of these used in .22 for $240 at a pawn shop. I am pretty sure my RWS 34 will be collecting a lot of dust now! I do a lot of pest control for 7 different farms and a feed lot here, wish I had a video camera setup so I could upload to youtube. Again THANK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i just bought the HW 97 k and i have to say that im impressed with the accuracy i never thought that a springer could punch tight groups like that ,, thanks for the review

That's the one reason I enjoy your channel: your diversity on air rifles. I too use both spring powered and PCP, many of my single strokes are also Nitro-gas piston as well break barrels, and although I enjoy the PCPs, I prefer the spring/gas break barrels. Main reasons why is that it takes more skill to shoot them (mastering the "artillery hold" being one of them), but you can shoot all day long if your cocking arm can hold out, without the troubleshooting complexities that a misfiring PCP can present.
As I stated in a comment in another video, many break barrels sold here in the states average over a 1,000fps, my average break barrels exceed even that, even in .22, and there are a couple models on the market that can hurl out a .25 at that speed, but I too use heavier pellets especially in my .177 ones for the same reason (knock-down power), as well as I want to keep the speed well below the sound barrier limit so they are as quiet as possible (anything less than a 10.65gr has them sounding like a .22 rimfire!).
I have noticed that many of the spring powered in the UK tend to be under-leavers in various videos I have seen; I am assuming that those are the most common there, as well are there any under-leavers offered in a gas-piston model? I have seen a few on various retail sites here in the states, but not many.

Theoben was the first to bring gas piston air rifles to the market many years ago and i had one of there .25 eliminators years ago, a beast of a gun but accurate and beautifully finished but expensive they also did an under lever with a seven shot mag called the SLR 88 and 98 models but they are sadly not made anymore but impact airguns now produce a similar single shot model gas ram under lever called the RM200 that looks really nice.
I have a HW97K .22 and love it. This rifle has taken countless rabbits. Another great vid!

Excellent review I own one for over 10yrs now and it has never let me down nice tight groups and brilliant accuracy. Great and efficient means of hunting small game if shi*t ever hits the fan.

Yes I've always liked the record unit, i adjusted mine a little to have the pull wait similar to my other rifles.
True no worries about how much air you have left in the tank.
Fantastic video again Sir. That brings back memories to my first three rifles I ever got. The first was a HW-80 carbine, second was a HW-77 carbine. Next was the HW-90 standard barrel. Out of the three I found HW-77 was better and more consistent due to under-leaver cocking. Great video again Sir :o))))))

I'm about to take delivery of one of these in .22, timber thumbhole stock and nickel barrel version. In Australia, we aren't trusted with a suppressor so hopefully it's not too loud. The only thing I don't like is the auto-setting safety, it adds to the noise, clearly heard in your excellent video. As I type, I received the text message from my dealer, telling me my permit to acquire has been issued! If I could be critical for a moment, you mentioned the stippling isn't as grippy as it could be, yet you're clearly aware of the "artillery hold" required on such a powerful air rifle. I follow your excellent channel, I also look forward to seeing this very capable rifle in action. Thank you sincerely.

Yes the nitrogen powered rifles would also be recoil sensitive because although they use a sealed gas strut to power the piston forward in stead of a steal spring, they still recoil on firing while the pellet is still in the barrel. Unlike a pcp which has no large moving parts on firing so no recoil.

love the videos u inspired me to get into air rifles,i got the hatsan bt 65 sb in .25 cal i been knocking down squirrels with it left and right.so far i have only let two slip away as i walked right up on the didnt see them and they took off never stopping then losing them in the brush and undergrowth. your videos are great and always a thumbs up from your pal in Alabama USA. i got a few videos up of my own now soon more to come if your able check them out.later cant wait for the next video.

When the HW97 is cocked the safety catch pops out so the gun is on safe. To fire it you have to push the safety catch in. But if you don't fire the gun after pushing the safety catch in you have to bring the cocking arm down as if you are cocking the rifle again to reengage the safety catch and make the rifle safe again.
Yes I believe a springer can be left cocked while looking for quarry mate. The danger of leaving it cocked is when the rifle is in storage at home as spring under pressure will gradually weaken
Believe me i have been very frustrated in the past waiting for a peaceful moment to film in, but when it is quiet it is very nice.

I did buy the HW77K .22 as I am in Canada and have a fire arms license it's not limited to 495fps. I think mine is in the neighborhood of 800 fps It's awesome and one of my favorites
Lefty's have always had to pay that little bit extra, but i see more manufactures are producing guns to suit both right and left handers now.
Funny enough I have just bought one of these a few days ago, the synthetic version in 177 really appealed to me for an all weather hunter, that and I'm getting abit bored with the pcps and like abit of a challenge! Like I started out with a springer and miss the simple days of grabbing the rifle and filling pocket full of pellets! Mine is all tuned now, the scope should be here today, a simmons super nightview.. and will hopefully have some videos in the near future! Great video, faved. FMG

Both will kill rabbit sized game out to 35-40 yards with a well placed shot, the .177 shoots faster and flatter but the .22 does have more knock down power and better for heart shots. I already have two air rifles in .22cal and wanted to try something different so went for the .177 for a change.
True the first time i cocked the rifle i couldn't believe how quiet the cocking stroke was, with no sound of the spring at all.
just ordered a hw 97 synthetic stainless in 177. Hope is shoots half as good as yours...from Alabama in USA
I have one of these on order from Pownalls in .22 with a Nikko Sterling 3-9X50 Panamax scope. I initially ordered a Walther Rotex RM8 but called up the shop this morning after seeing bad reviews regarding the RM8's internal component quality. The guy was really helpful and said changing my order was no problem. It was a coin flip between this and the Air Arms TX200 in Leftie walnut stock (beautiful gun) , but the HW97 won the toss as it was much cheaper, allowing me to add a much better scope, and a pop-up pellet trap target. Can't wait for it to get delivered so I can get down to some serious garden plinking :)
Sounds great i always thought the Airarms Prosport was the best looking springer on the market but i don't think there is anything in it between the TX200 and the HW97 they both shoot really well though the Airarms might have nicer wood work.
@@HuntersVermin Yeah the TX200 does have nicer wood. I'm surprised Weihrauch didn't offer any walnut or laminate stock options on the 97. They have some nice options on other models. Gun shop called me to let me know no blued synthetic HW97's in stock so they offered to upgrade me to the synthetic stainless finish :) No shot it yet, itching to get to the range.

it seems these are the guns to have this year ... thanks for great reviews from yourself and si pitway etc .... lots of us are leaving the pcp's at home now and getting back to old school :-)
but with out the old school rubbish recoils like of old .. these are bloody great :-)
Make sure all the stock and scope mount screws are all tight, plus don't shoot the gun off of a hard rest as spring guns don't like that, but ether rest it on a large cushion or shoot it from your usual hunting stance to zero it in. Also try using a different pellet as some barrels can be pellet fussy.

Great video David. I also bought a springer - the nemesis of the 97k - the AATX200HC in 177. Taken a good few rabbits with it so far. It takes a bit more skill but bowls em over pretty well :)

Only just found this vid, great review, I’ve got pcp air guns but really like my springers, much more satisfying when you constantly hit the targets, got an LGU a Prosport and a TX200 all 177, saving up for a 97 blue laminate, now a subscriber looking forward to more vids, keep em coming.

It depends on the which model of HW97 you want as synthetic one i have was about £350 but the wooden stocked model is £400+.
I ordered it through a local gun dealer as he had'n any in stock but they will all come from the main dealer in England.
So was I, i shot one and really liked it but the HW97 was cheaper but i don't regret buying it only that i cant afford both.

I use a Bushnell Scout 1000 and i have only changed the battery's once so far. There might be something wrong if you are only getting 4-5 ranges from the battery. I really only put up videos when i get the time to hunt edit and then up load it.

Well in N'Ireland you need a licence for any air rifle. If you go to you local gun shop they will help you pick out a rifle and sort out the paper work etc that you will need for the licence. But a good spring powered gun like the HW95k will last you a life time.

Yeah i know what you mean but find the HW97 rather quiet for a springer. The big disadvantage i find is i can't set the rifle on a wall or gate like i'm used to with my pcp's. That and there isn't a quick back up shot if needed.
