    I was in a 7 year slump, I never gave up because I love bow hunting. I’ll be honest in that I did lean on the gun for venison and went back to the shotgun for turkey. But I’m so happy that I found a style that I’m comfortable and confident. You helped me a lot Jason and I pick a few things up from some others as well. The ASL was the main factor to help me control my shot and release. Thanks.

      Love that you are back at the traditional game and having fun. The fun is the key to it all. We will never be good as we want to shooting wise, but we can just hunt closer, add to the challange and have fun. And nothing wrong on using firearms. And never anything wrong with filling the freezer with meat no matter how you take it.

    This is great advice and confirmed by guys like Joel turner. This helps prevent severe target panic or shot anticipation movements. If it’s too automatic your mind will likely automatically develop some type of pre shot movement in anticipation of the shot and then target panic starts to set in and you shoot bad. I like shooting open loop and can’t stand the clicker style. I tried it and am glad I did but the fast and smooth hill style of instinctive shooting is just so fun, and magical as you said in a previous video. With this style of open loop instinctive shooting, change is probably very important to stop the development of target panic.

    New to trad shooting and tried half dozen different styles and settled on 3under with 1in fixed crawl for a point on of 20yds. Hold 4in low at 12-15yrs and about the same high at 25yds. For 3D I can hold 6-8in high for 30-35yrs. Once I tried this method I went from 6 arrow groups of 12-18in to 4-6in groups. Would be comfortable hunting out to 20-25 now. Great video!!!

    I totally agree! A few years ago I tried out Asiatic style archery shooting thumb draw and for whatever reason, that just works better for me. When I find I'm getting in a rut I go back to three under on my old Bear Grizzly and everything resets again. I use the winter months to experiment and then the summer time to optimize and hone in on any new things I've learned so that I'm dialed in by the start of hunting season. In hunting season, I just keep doing whatever works and try not to mess with it too much.

    Yep, I try everything. Also after a shooting session where I do something that clicks I write it down. I’ve got tons of scribbled notes. Over time I can see certain things repeatedly show up.

    Great topic my friend... my biggest problem is different distances. I shoot all winter long, thousands of shots in my garage at 12 yards, everything becomes automatic, then when spring arrives I really struggle aiming off.
    I shoot split vision inside at 12 yards, then I go outside and try to shoot gap from further and its a big struggle.
    12 yards is a great distance for hunting tho...

    • @tradbowpodcast
      @tradbowpodcast  Місяць тому

      I suffered from the same when shooting in my garage at 13 yards in the winter in michigan. Then when I would shoot outside everything was off a bit. But usually after a few days of stump shooting or varied distances my mind got right again.

    Another way to look at it is, different situations may call for different techniques. I typically push out on my bow arm harder when I am hunting birds and small game because it mimics a shotgun movement and position to swing out. Its easier to swing out with pushing your bow arm for that stability. I like to practice instinctive when I am struggling with gap because I need to shoot instinctive under 10 yards regardless.
    Like you I stick to "core techniques" I try to get my anchor and eye position the same every time. I try to have a nice strong draw position but even that I hunt from the ground 100% of the time and much of that time I am on my knees or sitting and that requires a different technique often.
    There are pros and cons to this, I think people get locked into a lot of gadgets and aids and think its a permanent fix but about two years ago I realized with clickers and sears and all those things you get all pumped up shooting with those things and you shoot lights out for days even months and then your old bad habits of muscle memory kicks in and you become so used to those addons that you start using them incorrectly and get frustrated. For me it has been better for me to focus on techniques I can internalize rather than with various tools I can add on my bow.
    Great video!

    Good points Jason. I have found that whatever you can do to give you more control over your shot the better things will be. A deeper hook on the string , how I grip the riser and consistent anchor pint have improved my shot a lot. One HUGE help has been following Joel turner’s shot IQ shot control method…. Now I can actually group arrows out to almost 30 yards. Obviously I’m hunting alot closer range but all these things have totally improved my accuracy

    I change something till it feels right. My main thing I’m working on now is a good release and follow through. I can’t believe what a difference a good release and hand follow through makes. Almost like golf or bowling I can tell the instant I release if it’s gonna be a good shot or a flyer. I still can’t put 5 arrows in the 8 ring at 20 yards because at least one will be a flyer as I forget some step in the shot process.

    • @tradbowpodcast
      @tradbowpodcast  Місяць тому

      Yep and that feeling when you get at the release when you know its gonna hit perfect is amazing.

    See, this is Why I have a 54 inch recurve I pull 36 pounds on the 45 pound recurve as I have a 24--24.5 inch draw and an all fiberglass 36 pound duel sided notch grip ASL 60 inches I pull 34--35 pounds on because bow model was made for 25 inch draw besides my hunting bow a Youth longbow in hickory at 45 inches from Great Plains Traditional Archery Company where bow is an ASS or American Style Short bow when used for adults as bow is 52 inch. Even my bother has his cheap fiberglass Englich Longbow at 60 pounds or 65 pounds when drawn to his hear, his Bear Grizzly at 45 pounds and a 62 inch duel side fiberglass Ben Person bow where bow can be drawn 48--50 pounds sometimes up to 55 pounds depending on weather. Having different bows helps as you can get locked in on using one bow and muscle memory. Of all my bows my old ASL is one of my favorites as I can practice outside shooting on becuse of being a duel sided model.

      You definitely do alot of testing and very detailed work setting up your bows. Love that.

  • @shredfreak83

    since i shoot everything with a string on i kinda have to. I mainly shoot WA barebow or olympic recurve, but when the weather is good i always bring something i label as a fun bow. Wich can be pretty much anything from horsebow to takedown hunting recurve and a longbow is on the horizon aswell.
    I guess you could say i prefer to shoot each discipline in it's own category, a 3d or field course is much more enjoyable with longbow or hunting recurve, i honestly don't see the appeal to shoot them with barebow or oly recurve.
    When indoor season starts with wa18 competition i'll be having a hard time sticking to oly recurve only.
    Only downside i can think of is that the first arrow usually goes places when switching it up.
    I'm just making excuses to buy more bows really 🤣

    Hi Jason, do you use lighted nocks for hunting? If so, do you use them in the rain?
    Many people said that lighted nocks were unreliable, they said lighted nocks sometimes lighted up and sometimes didn't, and they also said lighted nocks introduced shooting errors. Do you think the lighted nocks work reliably?

    • @tradbowpodcast
      @tradbowpodcast  Місяць тому +1

      I used lighted nocks 15 years ago for 1 season and when they worked were awesome. Bit so many times they went out when they hit the deer or didn't light up. Thay makes it really hard to see where to hot wad. So I stopped using them. Won't use them again. Instead rely on bright colored feathers and very happy
