You talk about being offset from where they come. I did that on the ground, but this beautiful 8-10 point buck instead came over a small rise straight at me instead around the end of the rise like I thought. He decided not to stay around, but he never quite figured out what I was... a great day. Lots of great advice here, thanks so much!
You know, I've learned more on the deer I've missed than the deer I've taken and I've seen them do some amazing things. You learn from paying your dues, watching behavior, and trying not to make the same mistakes. A man is a slow moving critter shooting a slow moving arrow. I wonder sometimes how we've survived so well for so long. You gotta respect the animals and learn and the best way to do that is with a stick bow. Anybody who can outsmart a deers nose and ears or a turkeys eyes while carrying a stick bow has my respect.

I love watching your videos because they are full of great information and they are all done by giving all the glory to our savior Jesus Christ the Lord ! I think the real reason i enjoy bow hunting is the quiet time I spend talking to our creator and looking at the beautiful world he created for us to enjoy. The harvest is a small part of the total experience! Please continue educating us on bow hunting and most of all please keep educating us about our lord because sometimes I have doubts if there is something after our life ends on earth

Aim low, period! deer do squat, yes, not all will but why take the chance plus a lower hole makes for a better blood trail. high hits usually mean a lousy blood trail if any as the body cavity has to fill up before pouring out. I have a jacket with removeable arms, so I remove the arm that the string will rub against or drag against. I also removed all dangling stuff on that arm of gillie suit that might hinder my shot. I don't like any form of loose clothing on my left arm that my bow string might grab. I used to go to those later hot spots to set up some natural cover for when I was to actually come and hunt. I tried to have several places set up to allow for different winds. I used small fresh cut green cedar trees and Hollys to make more solid back grounds. Have used them for several years even after they turn brown. I even used brown trot line to stretch across a spot to hang cedar or even limbs from fake Christmas trees from for cover, they stay green for years. you have so many options if you just use the brain that the Good Lord gave us. The catch is to learn as you go and also to be mindful of potential problems. Loved the video Brother!

I was going to purchase a Waldrop PacSeat based on your review but opted to modify one of those collapsible tripod seats that are sold everywhere. I liked the pivoting feature but the seat was just not comfortable enough for an all-day hunt. After the “comfort” modification it has become my ground hunting seat. While it lacks the pack-out feature of the Waldrop seat, I find the ability to slowly and quietly pivot to position for a shot when necessary is a good trade-off by increasing my percentage of shot options. The legs are independently adjustable for height and uneven terrain and a tree can make a good back support in addition to cover. The total weight is under 6 lbs. including the modification. I enjoy your videos, Robert, and wish you the very best.
While working in an archery shop I taught a kid to shoot in the late 80’s. He died falling out of a climbing stand on opening day. I’ve never climbed without a safety strap and haven’t climbed much at all since.
This was a GREAT video! I’ve been ground hunting for quite a while, and I’ve experienced virtually all of the things you spoke of. Your tips are so valuable! You’re a lot faster learner than I am. Somehow I have to remember to re-watch this video toward the end of summer, to refresh all of these ideas and tips in my mind before next deer season!
I take my 87 year old father for a drive every day and in the last 6 months we may have seen three deer. The deer population is getting thin in upstate NY. Luckily I know where to find bald eagles if we go a few days without seeing anything. 😊 Its sad to see the population get so low. I know a few hunters who didn't get a single deer this year.
Keep one stand Robert. You may need it. But your hunting where there is a lot of game Feel blessed. Look like you have alot of green year round. But good tips i know a deer will drop half the width of their body and you will have to shoot at yhat lower spot at 15 and 20 yards. But you will do good. I have been ground hunting all year. Usually a handgun hunter in the badlands of ND but home is riverbottoms. Also. Too calm is a problem. I had a buck tonight at 10 yards. He was looking away but heard my arrow sliding in the felt!
Mid season I switch to mostly ground hunting. First of all, I don’t have a ton of time so I can’t waste time climbing. I need to get somewhere and sit. Also, after about mid season it gets pretty cold here in Minnesota. My fine motor skills go out the window and I don’t want to be fiddling with with carabiners, knots, buckles, ropes, etc in the dark after a cold sit. Between you and Dave Toms, I’m going to put together a much better ghillie/kill suit setup before next season.

Robert...it is doable. Learn, as you said. I am watching and listening. I have hunted on the ground 99% for 15 plus years. Getting close to deer is not the big issue. Doing the deed with a deer 6 yards away is. I let them get in close because of target panic. I couldn't control my shots. I have worked hard to overcome that. Now... I don't let them get that close. Don't be the only clump of stuff out there. You do not need to be well hidden, just not stick out. You can change that by adding branches, as you did. Also....add branches out there, to occlude their vision for a second, so you can draw. Noise counts, even the little sound of the arrow rubbing across the arrow rest. Stay out of the sun. As you said...you cannot shoot 360 degrees... accept it and hunt what you can hunt. Set up better or different. You are hooked... keep posting... chuckC

I had 9 misses this year. Terrible year 😂 I was hunting with a bow that just wasn’t right for me was some of it but I really blew it on a couple. I learned more this season than I have in 15 years of bowhunting.
All good points that I agree with and have lived thru as well! I get bad tailbone pressure with the waldrop and my butt goes numb, even with a pad. The next day my hip kills when I walk, very strange. I think it’s the leaning back that causes problems for me. You find the seat comfortable? Ever seen a bow ghillie? Dave T has good vids on making one. I’ll try your ghillie hat idea, that’s brilliant!
Everything you said is correct, I’ll drag brush to turn them if I have too, I will never again hunt in a brush blind when the deer are coming straight on. Good luck with your self bow. God bless
I suffered a tree stand accident in 2011 but still hunt stands just much safer now. So if I hunt ground only I'll have to move where you live. I'm at retirement also So God Bless and give God the Glory. Keep them coming
Great video Robert. I hunted only from the ground this year due to a bad knee keeping me from saddle hunting. It was a great experience. I had deer within 8 yards of me that never saw me and deer that busted me from farther away. The back cover definitely made the difference. Thanks for the extra pointers. Also, have you looked into the Titan 3D leafy suit? It works here in Arkansas. And it is also made of nano mesh that won’t let the no seeums through. I think one thing that gets me about ground hunting is the cramping/ itching in my arse when sitting for any length of time. I just haven’t found a solution. No matter the thickness of a pad or whatever, I get itchy pain butt and it messes with me! Honestly, I wasn’t blessed with a meaty butt, so that could be my vice here. 😮
Man Robert , I don’t miss a video. You need to try a ghost blind. That and the pac seat are awesome combo. It will work awesome it that cover down there. It does work I’ve killed several that never knew I existed. The carrying case is only good for storage in my opinion. Sling it over your shoulder on your side and you can slide through thick cover no problem. Good luck brother!

Great info!! Everything you said, I have experienced more than I'd like to admit. I was always a compound hunter, on private land, primarily in a stand or ground blind and mixed in some ground attack when the conditions called for it. And it was always fun. Though, I've never been able to get a deer still hunting or stalking with a bow. This last year I dedicated myself to the longbow, on the ground and hunting fairly high pressured public land. Oh boy was it a different animal. The 2 times I got busted, I didn't have good enough side cover but both were within 5 yds, but still had multiple deer within 20 yds a lot. The 1st time getting to draw on a deer, I cleanly missed low and I knew exactly what I did wrong. Collapsed, plucked terribly and the anxiety completely overtook me. An hour later, another buck comes in and walks the same path in the opposite direction and I was able to keep it all together and managed to take my 1st trad deer at a little over 20 yds. I don't think I'll completely give up on stands, but I'll definitely be on the ground a lot more in the future. Next season the goal is to take one with a bow I make myself, which is in progress.
@@robertcarte95 built my 1st last winter to learn how to shoot trad, but it broke after a couple thousand shots. Learned a lot on that one, and now it's time to build another one but at a suitable hunting weight.

I’ve been watching your channel for a while now, and I just have to say I love the honesty, and how you are not afraid to talk about the lessons learned by your experiences, as well as the successes. it’s a journey and none of know it all. This video in particular for me, was very interesting because I stopped tree stand hunting a few years ago and have made all of these mistakes multiple times, lol. I fortunately never fell from a tree stand, but I have always preferred to be mobile and as you mentioned it’s a whole different game. Thanks for sharing!

It was not with my climber. I was going from steps to loc on and fell. I was climbing up into a different stand and fell. Won't happen again.

Oh boy was it a different animal. The 2 times I got busted, I didn't have good enough side cover but both were within 5 yds, but still had multiple deer within 20 yds a lot. The 1st time getting to draw on a deer, I cleanly missed low and I knew exactly what I did wrong. Collapsed, plucked terribly and the anxiety completely overtook me. An hour later, another buck comes in and walks the same path in the opposite direction and I was able to keep it all together and managed to take my 1st trad deer at a little over 20 yds. I don't think I'll completely give up on stands, but I'll definitely be on the ground a lot more in the future. Next season the goal is to take one with a bow I make myself, which is in progress.

@@robertcarte95 built my 1st last winter to learn how to shoot trad, but it broke after a couple thousand shots. Learned a lot on that one, and now it's time to build another one but at a suitable hunting weight.

I’ve been watching your channel for a while now, and I just have to say I love the honesty, and how you are not afraid to talk about the lessons learned by your experiences, as well as the successes. it’s a journey and none of know it all. This video in particular for me, was very interesting because I stopped tree stand hunting a few years ago and have made all of these mistakes multiple times, lol. I fortunately never fell from a tree stand, but I have always preferred to be mobile and as you mentioned it’s a whole different game. Thanks for sharing!
