Years ago back in the 90's progressive Berkeley CA was paying people with no degree to pick up trash starting at 60,000 a year. Starting pay for teachers with a degree was 36,000 a year. They were paying more to take care of trash than to take care of our children. What does that say about what we think of our children.

It says that we don't want our children to be surrounded by trash? I'm not sure that's the diss you think it is...
Teachers and school service staff being undervalued has nothing to do with other service workers, so as an electrician I'm saying stop trying to pit workers against workers.
School district brass giving themselves OUTRAGEOUS salaries are far more likely be the source of the issue than the city sanitation department.
Try again, but do better this time.
I'd apologize for the vitriol but I'm SICK of this mentality that OTHER WORKING CLASS PEOPLE are the dang problem.
      DO. BETTER.

My girlfriend’s mom is a “lunch lady” in this district. She does so, so much more than just cook lunch for these kids, and until today got paid essentially minimum wage. I remember when I first met her she had just gotten told off for giving a student lunch when he couldn’t afford it. She eventually started buying this student food WITH HER OWN MONEY until his free lunch paperwork went through to avoid getting fired, simply because she did not want to see him keep asking friends for their juice boxes and the top buns off of their chicken sandwiches. These people care for kids a million times more than those trying to ban books and critical thinking in our classrooms.

For some reason I'm reminded of the proposal to make kids who are poor and whose parents cannot afford to buy lunches work off their 'debt' - by doing janitorial type services in the schools. I don't remember where this was proposed, but I do remember it was Good Conservatives who proposed it. It nauseated me, because I've seen and studied the reality.
I'd bet that your girlfriend's mom also greatly improved the educational outcome for those students.
In this hellhole of a county, tracking is a common thing - and it always seems that poor people are put on the 'dummy track' (I've heard it called that many times) while rich kids are "college Prep" - even those who aren't that capable. A large part of it is stereotypes about people who happen to be poor (and usually through no fault of their own). Thus, the punitive ideas behind the 'punishment' your girlfriend's mom and the poor kids experienced.
I'm delighted at what she did!

@@RedHeart64 I went to school in the late 60s and early 70s in a very small country school district. Starting in 5th grade, 2 students a day would work in the cafeteria washing dishes and pans. We received a free lunch and a quarter a day. In Jr high, the same program except it was 4 students because it was a grade school and Jr high combined in the same building. In high school, girls on the free lunch program would work the cafeteria and the guys would do janitorial chores. They were paid with lunch and a dollar a day. Nobody saw any shame in this. It just was. Also, everyone was white except for the 2 adopted kids and one year we had an exchange student from Nicaragua. It was also pre-name brands. We had 4 choices of clothes: K-Mart, Sears, hand me downs or Mom's sewing machine. Seems crazy now.

It is done as the ultimate last resort, when every other negotiation tool has been exhausted. So when a teacher's union goes on strike, it isn't over something frivolous or extravagant. It's over something massive and life changing.

I'm stumped in the $2 per hour raise - that's much less than $5G per year for a 40hr per week employee (and most of these employees are part time) - for God's sake that alone should be given. If that's the minimum they want, these people are not being greedy - esp as it'll be wiped out by next Jan with the way inflation is going 🤞💜

I'm a 27yr janitor with L.A.U.S..D at many schools there is only 1 janitor at night and they have to clean the entire school I'm lucky to have a cool Plant Manager and Principal my teachers for the most part work with me. Some Principals and Plant Managers treat us very harshly. I had to transfer from a site where 6hrs was just cleaning the restrooms plus 25 classrooms offices and hallways. Even with the proposed raise we will still be underpaid.
