My immediate response was “the constitution doesn’t cover it because the founding fathers never expected us to be stupid enough to need those provisions”. In the USA, all citizens of the USA are innocent until and unless they are proven to be guilty. The probity that the Democrats have had is that they haven’t been able to find enough evidence to support their accusations. Accusations alone will never qualify as proof. So they whine, cry, complain, minimize, shift blame, and lie, but get nowhere. Anyone with any experience with law enforcement or the courts in the USA will know that getting indicted doesn’t mean much.
      Even if everything goes wrong for Trump, he’s arrested, goes through due process, is proven to be guilty, and convicted, as a first time offender, he would receive a presumptive sentence of probation. Trump will never go to jail. Anyone that believes otherwise simply doesn’t have enough experience to know any better.

      Anyone with any law enforcement or courtroom experience understands that indictments are meaningless. Many prosecutors use the indictment process as a fishing expedition to see if anyone will get scared and tell on others, even if they have to make things up. Most indictments do not lead to anything. In 2016, Trump was easily the class of the general election. In 2020, he was again, easily the class of that general election. We have no idea whom else will run in 2024 and Trump may or may not be the class of that election. What is known is that whomever wins the nomination for the Democrats will be supremely unfit to serve in public office, much less as the POTUS.

    The nomination isn't official until the Republican National Convention. The Convention can nominate someone else, even if Trump wins the primary. If Trump's situation looks bad enough, they would have the justification to do so. Of course, after that, they would stand even less of a chance in the general election.

    • @jeffmacdonald9863
      @jeffmacdonald9863 Рік тому

      Yeah, it would only be after the Convention that it would be blocked. Of course, even that's awkward. Most convention delegates are theoretically bound to vote according to their primary state votes.
      And "stealing" the nomination from him like that would be great fodder for his base. If he didn't go along with it and he almost certainly wouldn't that would completely kill the chances of the GOP winning.
      The scenario Beau didn't really touch on is him being not just indicted, but convicted and winning anyway. If he's convicted on charges related to the 6th the 14th could be used to keep him from taking office. On other charges, that's not true.

      There are rules. The vast majority of delegates are obligated to vote for the candidate to whom they are pledged on the first ballot. I have no idea what leeway might exist in the rules for unusual cases, but I think we have to at least consider that if Trump wins an outright majority of delegates his nomination may be inevitable.

That is assuming he doesn't run off and start his own party separate from the gop which is another likely scenario. If they make him the candidate he is a losing option, maga nuts as a whole are getting less and less support and he is doing the same song and dance as previous elections while have multiple legal anchors tied around him all of which are pushing all but his diehard base away. Either way it will take years to really put the gop back together and that is assuming that they have the leadership and skills to actually build it back up. The whole time people will be jumping that ship and while they may not be running to democrats they will likely move into a more neutral cycle.
