I daresay Disney's lawyers are demonstrating the value of a good education and critical thinking.
Careful you’re venturing into “woke” territory.
indeed my good chap.
And also why conservatives _hate_ it.
this is the company who didn't get to the position it was by hiring conservative losers like DeSantis or a Ted Cruz. These are competent individuals with subject expertise in law. Disney knew how to play this. No theatrics because this isn't a Disney movie. No chest thumping or big talk because only silly stupid conservatives would fall for that. This was just routine business. (I guarantee that Disney did a lot of fine tooth checking on the details. Frankly, what exactly was this new DeSantis board supposed to do besides infrastructure? Did the stupid conservatives think that Disney execs and shareholders would tolerate typical conservative incompetence? )
Disney was awake and the republicans were sleeping. This is what happens when defective humans refuse to "go woke".
(Think of what Disney is. A father wanted to have a spiderman etching on his dead son's gravestone and Disney said "No". This is an evil Empire and the republicans are local warlords who don't understand that empires are hypercompetent at winning. Think of the British empire and how it carved up the world because the locals were too conservative to understand what an empire is.)
LOVE THIS right here
I have concerns about Disney's control over the entertainment industry, but watching them beat DeSantis and his authoritarian goons at their own game is pretty gratifying.
Oh, I have big time concerns over Disney's control. They are a monopoly folks, even if they appear to side on the right side of history, there's a lot of UA-cam fan geeks that want to see them fail. Generally Monopolies are not a good idea.
@@XFLexiconMatt I am not trying to be that guy, but the entertainment industry is an oligopoly. Not that that makes it any better, they all need to be broken up. Comcast, Disney, Netflix, Paramount, Warner Brothers/Discovery & Fox.
I don't support Disney as a company at all. Not even a little bit. But I'll celebrate their every win over the gremlin in office like it's NYE and St Patty's day all rolled into one every time.
It's kind of like watching the Trex eat the baddies at Jurassic Park.
We all know we aren't Chris Pratt's Velociraptor Whisperer here on Beau's channel. But it's still pretty entertaining.
@@RevShifty Even if Disney is acting out of selfish and capitalistic motives, the social impact of standing up to wanna-be-dictators and their fascist, authoritarian policies and enablers is net progress in the right direction.
I've got to be honest. As a native Floridian who has always heard not to mess with Disney lawyers, I laughed SO hard at the royalty clause!
As always, a Disney prince to the rescue!
It's just so brilliant! I was laughing so hard too.
I'm definitely more subdued. My reaction is akin to a shit eating grin.
It was Disney flair at its finest!😆
haha, me too! I keep watching different folks cover this story just to hear their take on King George's descendants :)
Back when DeSantis started messing with Disney I told a friend of mine that Disney has lawyers that scare Satan and that, when Disney felt that the time was right, they were going to treat DeSantis to a manicure all the way up to his elbow, and bill him for it. South Park always portrays Disney in their cartoons as a viscious gangster Mickey Mouse.
And South Park are raaaaarely off the mark. Never fuck with Disney
"...manicure all the way up to his elbow..." Fabulous! I'm borrowing this.
@@AutumnFire1414 I wish I could take credit for it. I've heard it a few times over the years, and it stuck.
We can only hope South Park does an episode about this... lol
Disney lived up to the hype. This was an EPIC burn!! 😆 🤣 😂 😹 😆 🤣
As a former Cast member I can tell you that the Disney lawyers are the things of nightmares. Human beings should have lawyers that good
Disney lawyers and Disney security. Neither are to be trifled with.
My delusion about the Disney Way was destroyed when I worked for a vocational rehabilitation firm and we had a couple of injured workers come through. Vicious, horrible place to work. One character player (Goofy) was kicked so hard by a bunch of kids that they were permanently partially paralyzed and in excruciating pain. I never went back to those hell holes.
I was also a cast member, decades ago, and of all the lawyers in all the world, the ones I wouldn't want to face all work for Disney.
@@sophiabright8371 I have to ask the obvious question...Why the hell were the parents letting their children beat up on Goofy? I mean, yes, Disney has their share of the blame. You cannot break character at all. When I visited Disneyland in the 2000's though, costumed characters all had human "bodyguards" and characters were no longer free roaming. I'm not sure if that was in response to some of these incidents or not. Mind, I'm not really defending Disney, but when you sign on with them, you know you're signing on to a Mouse-tatorship. It's part of your training in doing things the Disney Way. Or it used to be.
@TheDevilOfDallas strength doesn't have to play a role. Repetitive actions.
For example. Someone kicks you in the knee, 1 time.
Ouch right maybe a little swelling for a week.
Imagine if they did it dozens of times back to back, the Repetitive action will cause harm.
Similar to how you get carpal tunnel.
And keep in mind kids might kick hard as they can. Because people say kids can't hurt you.
Like a baby venomous snake.
In other words, their lawyers did what Disney asked of them. Republicans are unfamiliar with this concept.
And they did it completely legally.
And competently.
And successfully
Disney asked their lawyers to do something completely legal.
Republicans are unfamiliar with this concept
Legally, competently & successfully. Ahh yes that’s the part that caught the right off guard.
This also occurred to me: The symbol of the Republican party is the elephant, and Disney is symbolized by a mouse. So DeSantis picked a fight with Disney, and Disney clapped back in a big way. So, as best as I can figure...apparently, there was a reason for all those cliches about elephants being scared of mice!
'Disney's lawyers did not let it go'. Now I have that song in my head. Thanks Beau
You caught that too, huh? 😉😆
Let it go let it go. Tell DeSantis to shove it so.
Did anyone really believe a company that sues pre-schools for trademark infringement will just roll over?
Get a grip, geez.
😂
We're talking about guys who want even more guns in schools. Maybe they think that beats trademark lawyers?
And that refused to allow the grieving father of a dead 4 year old to use the image of Spider-Man on the kid’s grave marker.
Yep -- they even made one of em paint over the Disney characters the kids had painted on the daycare walls _while the kids watched and cried!_ o.O If Disney's darkest villains were real, even they wouldn't want to mess with Disney!
If DeSantis got completely owned by Disney, how would he fair as President against a foreign government?
They would run over him in negotiations.
Right??? So much for their "brilliant JAG lawyer" narrative.
Excellent point
How would that differ from any of the most recent Republican presidents. They pick people who project false strength but lack actual strength of character.
Frankly, I fear the Disney Corp more than most foreign governments, but I get what you're saying.

To be fair, it wasn’t that Florida didn’t want Disney to run things their way, it was more of Desantis lashing out at Disney for not going along with his…messaging.
yeah cause corporations should tell governors how to do their job
@@haroldcampos9661 Disney was never trying to tell Desantis how to do his job, they just disagreed with his stance, so he decided to come after them. This story dates back to wearing masks, long before he went all in with his “woke” campaign
To be fair, DeSantis and the Florida Legislature controlled by Republicans then threw a hissy fit when Disney said no, it was not going to give up its right to exercise its free speech as a "person" (remember, under U.S. law, corporations are "persons" with the right to participate in politics including the right of free speech under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution). So DeSantis and the Florida Legislature decided to change the rules that had been in place for at least FIFTY YEARS, but when the Republican politicians discovered that voiding the Agreement with Disney meant that residents of homes surrounding Disneyworld would suddenly have to pay for everything that Disney had been paying for out of its own pockets for the past fifty years, they repealed the stupid law they had previously passed but decided to create a law changing how the oversight Board acted, including stripping Disney of any say in who was appointed to the Board. DeSantis then selected a number of far right MAGA extremists to take the place of the Board members on a certain date. Meanwhile, the original Agreement was still in place. Disney simply took advantage of the ignorance and stupidity and excessive hubris of DeSantis, the Republican controlled Florida Legislature, and the incompetent attorneys representing the State of Florida and amended the Agreement with the consent of the then existing Board members, as it had every right to do. Nothing to see here folks - for real! It was all legally done, fair and square. You don't try and eff over the House of Mouse, period.
Really?
That must be the reason they passed a law to make Death Santis own Disney by proxy, or select a herd of clowns to be the new board.
DeSantis will now start sending his goons into Disney World to "rescue" any child that they suspect might be trans. Which, technically, includes any child wearing glitter & facepaint. He's passed the legislation to allow him to do exactly that. He will use it.
Desatan has been so exposed to news about Trump's lawyers so much he's forgotten how ruthless and efficient _real_ lawyers can be.
He's not a real lawyer, he just played one in the military. Normally I have the utmost respect for military JAGs... and then there's DeSantis.
Calling him satan is probably offensive to satanists./lh
@@Alex-cq1zr I call him DeFascist. More fitting.
DeSatan- that is great. Trump needs to take notes on nicknames from you.
Desantis himself being a lawyer probably should have clued him in on the potential for legal maneuvering. Of course, that presumes he was a competent lawyer to be able to anticipate such things. I believe the legalese is "assumes facts not in evidence " or somesuch.
Disney's lawyers did their homework. How else have they stayed in business all these years over multiple jurisdictions and a world-wide presence?! They made mincemeat of Desantis and his goons, and showed them how business is handled. This is what education and the wisdom to apply it to a given situation looks like. 😅😅😅😅😅😅😅😅
Lol never fuck with the Mouse.

Disney lawyers make special operations forces look like compassionate saints. They're a whole different level of cold.

Arrogance?
I love how DeSantis really thought that he was going to bully Disney; and they just casually bibbidi-bobbidi-boo a legal decree that throws in the descendants of the royal crown for good measure.
Many places have a "rule against perpetuities" that a legal agreement cannot exist "forever". So instead, it is tied to the lifespan of a person. Using the British monarch is a popular way to do this for some reason. The way it's written, the agreement lasts as long as the current descendants of Charles III live, plus 21 years. Since the youngest of Charles' descendants is a toddler, that will be a very long time.
"... they are without compassion; and I met them when they were on vacation." 😄😄😄
Disney was acting like the penguins of the Madagascar movies. “Just wave and smile boys. Wave and smile”
YESSSSSS
That's not a knife! THIS is a knife! (Crocodile Dundee!)
Also, with the whole “we are holding a pro lgbt conference” no small amount of “look over there, a SHINY THING!” Distraction level achievement badge awarded!
You are wrong; they did not even deign to have a reaction; they only took note of what the Republicans have already done at the state level when they have dominance of the legislature, which is already anti-democratic, just when they lost the position of state governor in a democratic and fair election
It pays to remember that Disney isn't just any old corporate behemoth, they are an entertainment company at their core. And if there's one thing any good entertainer knows, it's the power of misdirection.
I love the way this developed.
Wasn't there an LGBTQ+ conference planned in Disney world soon?

Because dumping millions of dollars into the Florida tourism economy is REALLY sticking it to DeSantis. I don't think you've really thought that out very well.
Shoo..the scammers and trolls are busy today.
Beau, I'm a retired attorney and you just gave me my belly laugh of the day! Yeah, good ol' mean, know-what-the-law-is-and-not-afraid-to-use-it attorneys do come in handy! I was a woman attorney back in the day when only 5% of attorneys in this country were women. So, of course, no law firm (ie, male attorneys) would hire me. After all, there had never been a woman attorney in the county my husband and I moved to with our family just after I passed the California Bar Exam. So I opened my own law office and, of course, had an immediate clientele of women who, shall we say, had not been represented well by male attorneys. And I went into court, totally prepared with the facts and law and won over 90% of my cases. So....was I one of those mean, tough attorneys who cast fear when they walked in the room? Probably. So, god bless mean, competent attorneys who know the law and how to use it Very often that is all we have to protect us in this country!
Thanks for voice you gave your clients.
Wow, you sound like an amazing person.
Good for you. I was once wrongly threatened w/ eviction from my rent-stabilized 3-bedroom apartment in Manhattan. I hired a woman lawyer who was so tough, even *I* was afraid to talk to her! The landlord caved within days. Her brief letter calling their bluff will be a treasured memento for life. $1200, worth every penny.
@@serendipityshopnyc Good on your tough woman lawyer! I have a story about dealing with a New York landlord. One of my sons worked in New York for ten years and when he was moving out of an apartment, partially based on the malfeasance of the landlord, the landlord wasn't going to give him back his $2,000 deposit. I researched New York landlord/tenant law, then called and had a "chat" with the landlord. He offered to refund one-fourth of the deposit. I explained the facts and law and said I would not accept any less than 100% refund and if that was not paid back to my son, I would get on a plane and fly to New York from the west coast and appear in court with my son. He paid my son back the entire deposit. I didn't have to fly back to New York for a court appearance.
@@robertgerrity878 Thank you. Over half my clients were women and children who I obtained protective orders for. Being a family law attorney was akin to being a soldier, dealing with danger, violence, guns and even death. I had a bodyguard accompany my clients and me to court on occasion and he would sometimes also protect them during court-ordered supervised visitations. He was an imposing man with a big heart. He was Native-American, Sioux, and never once charged his rather hefty fee (he was both a detective and bodyguard) to me or my clients.
The State of Florida arbitrarily changed the terms of their agreement with Disney. Disney changed the agreement with their board and now Florida has been hoisted on their own petard.
Hey Disney just use some pages from the Republicans playbook, there were a couple states that the Republicans lost the governor ship and some other stuff, so they went out before the new governor came in and stripped the governor of a lot of his powers that he can’t do it, and gave it to the Republican elected officials for that state. What makes you think that Disney couldn’t do that either!
You're right. And quite nicely phrased.
I mean, Disney owns a character who is famous for saying, "I am altering the deal. Pray I do not alter it any further."
The opposition has to be pretty damn horrible for me to side with Disney in a fight.
Meatball and the GQP fits.
Why so many negative responses toward Disney?
yeah, my feelings too.
@@Degan1000 They're a corporate near-monopoly with a massive carbon footprint. They've also long been known for questionable treatment of employees, especially artists. They're honestly super creepy, and if they ever turn against us we're screwed. Kind of like Google. I know they're making some environmental efforts, but, like, they should never be mistaken for the good guys. Anything they do they do for money. Any moral stand they take they will only ever take because not taking it would lose them more money than taking it would. It's not that they're the worst corporation on earth. It's more that they're just vastly powerful and need to be watched like hawks and never trusted too far.
@Jeff Foehringer The general concensus is that Disney is cutthroat in their business dealings, to the extent that even children and others of similar vulnerable status are not immune to getting hit with legal action. People that work for Disney often have horror stories about all the rules they need to follow and how draconian the punishments are. And the funny thing regarding the LGBT representation, Disney only agreed to it because huge numbers of their staff threatened to quit. They literally only sided with LGBT because they ran the numbers and saw they would lose large sums of income.
Then the Governor of Florida decides they are being too 'woke' and goes after them. And that...that was a mistake.
"Disney's lawyers, in fact, did not...Let It Go." Beau, you are a national treasure!
It wasn't until you wrote it down that I got the reference.
I’m so glad I learned not to ear or drink and listen to Beau at the same time. I loved that line! 🏰
@Ben INTERnational 😊
That line from Zootopia where Judy hustles the hustler would be very applicable too: ua-cam.com/video/t6pTFyCCJ5w/v-deo.html
But... did they take time to build a snowman?
Normally I'd never side with a giant corporation, especially one as Machiavellian as Disney. But I never believed that Disney would go down without a fight. No way would such a powerful company allow itself to be railroaded so easily. And I'm cheering every single time they screw over DeSantis.
I absolutely loved the King Charles twist. Florida, like most states, has laws about how long a contract can be (called the “rule against perpetuities”), which they expanded from 90 to 360 years a couple years back. Then, last year, they changed it to 1000 years. Thing is, there are exceptions to perpetuities, and I’d guess that the way the Charles thing is phrased hits one of those exceptions. Even better, it’s a limit Florida has no control over.
I was wondering what the King Charles phrases had to do with anything. That explains it. Thanks.
Yup, Disney literally went medieval on Desantis.
Here in the UK perpetuity is 125 years, I think in the states it's 21 years. The current Royal Family line live for ages, the Queen Mother was 101, Queen Elizabeth 2 was in her late 90's and Lilibet is only 2/3. So DeNumpty is never going to get his grubby little mitts on anything. All he had to do was get one of his team to attend the meetings, but he didn't because he thought it wasn't important enough. 🤣😂🤣😂
The moment you said "Disney lawyers", I felt the temperature in my room drop. It's not only Disney; every bigger amusement park/holiday resort calls the shots in regards of their surrounding areas. This includes not only the ground, but actually villages and even minor cities in their vicinity. How the heck De Santis' flying monkeys thought, they could pull this off without getting skewerd, is beyond me.
"DeSantis' flying monkeys"... love it!
You know that saying “Your eyes were bigger than your stomach”? Well, for republicans - especially, it seems, in florida, it is “Your mouth is bigger than your brain.” They were so confident they had “owned” Disney, a company none of them seems to know anything about, that they checked out. One might want to reassess the value of being “woke” over “sound asleep.” Reminds me of the recent massive red tsunami that never materialized.
@@cherylb6755 we have a sayin up here similar to that one "Don't let you mouth override your ass"!!! Yup and for DeDantis that has happened!

I agree. Disney is virtually a monolopy but the problems is their competitions went bad or copies Disney tactics instead of improving their quality.

Ol' Ronnie D is the two-bit movie villain that has run afoul of real villains...
Many legal agreements require public notice. The villains, operating lawful-evil, have to abide by those conditions.
The trick is to do it in the way that meets the threshold.
Often that public notice comes in the form if putting a notice in a local bulletin or newspaper with sufficient distribution, but those aren't the only means. That notice could, for example, possibly be in the form of a television program broadcast free-to-air, or in signboards placed in areas where the public can see them, inviting them to request more information or to participate in comment. It may not matter that the televised notice was placed in a fifteen minute infomercial slot on an obscure UHF station at 3:30am in between advertisements for the Shake Weight and Ronco kitchen products, or that the signboards followed the exact same layout and size as those used to notify the public about land rezoning or construction permitting, if they meet the required thresholds then they are enough.
Where I live there's a particular newspaper that predominately caters to the local Orthodox Jewish community that probably pays the bills by printing these sorts of legal notices. Its distribution is wide enough that it meets the legal threshold of notifying the community, and those in the legal profession who may actually need to see notices probably also subscribe, but it's unlikely that most common people are paying much attention to it. Regardless it meets the legal minimums, so it's employed. I expect that its prices are reasonable compared to the local mass-market Gannett-owned newspaper.

A lot of folks mistake people approving this outcome as support for Disney. This is like watching the inevitable result of someone poking a sleeping bear with a stick. I may cheer on the well-deserved outcome, but I wouldn't invite the bear into my tent to finish its nap.
Exactly!!!!! Well done!
I have a friend that worked for Reedy Creek. I live in East Orange County. That person was told last year that they had it handled. Not surprise about this. Disney has a well earn reputation of being ruthless and doing it well.
Disney knows how to keep things quiet in Florida. They learned how to do it when they bought all of that land without anybody noticing it was them buying it. That managed to keep the real estate costs from exploding on them.
"Everything's perfect" except the employees sleeping in their cars in the parking lot cause Disney thinks the joy of working for them makes up for the poor pay.

Depending on the lead up time, Disney might do a DeSantis-like character as a object of ridicule in a show.
Like the Trumpian Gnome king in Amazon's Return to Oz show?
Nah, they can pay someone else to do a biopic of the real thing. Got to keep the brand clean and all that.
They're going to have to come up with a new name for a DeSantis-like character. They've already used Goofy.
Well they've already redone Beauty and the Beast, otherwise he could be Gaston. Any other good possibilities? =)
Too boring of a character.🤣🤣

Boom!
Disney basically made that area in Florida and they didn't just get woke, they always have their eye on the world around them and what's going on, environmental, socially, politically, and beyond. They were one of the first to think environmentally and the impact thry have on ghe area. They were one of the first to ban smoking in their properties. They were one of the first to have health insurance for their employees and their life partners, not married, not spouse, not opposite sex partners but for the (life partner)! I've only been to Disney world once and that was decades ago but we went to epcot, future world I think it was called, I saw stuff I had only been able to study and read about. They concepts were crazy when Walt first proposed them but they are firmly grounded in reality now. They visualize a concept and make it happen, they have made developments in so many fields not just entertainmet and hospitality, agriculture, horticulture, aquaculture, science, enginering, space, transportation, environmental eco systems, soil and water concervation. They have done studies for NASA a the government even. They are way more then just a pretty face. DeSantis and some other Republicans need to realize they are not God, they are not the all powerful that demand submission and get it, they are just powerful small minded bullys and someday they are gonna get knocked off the backs of their high horses and told to go.....themselves!!! Lol and got a feeling they met their match with Disney. Lol
Well said
Disney was not actually against don't say gay though, they had/have their own version with Pixar (I believe that's who it is/was). Disney had just buckled under public pressure and virtue signaled to the LGBT community about the law.
DeSantis is a bigger villain than Disney though, so I appreciate Disney pulling a fast one on him.
The right wingers will never understand that its all about money for these corps. Money is with the majority of folks that are decent and just leave others alone. Not with right wing bigots
No they were OUT MATCH against Disney 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 How foolish they are.
It is so refreshing to see a large corporation fight the good fight for what is truly right.
While it's important to remember that Disney is NOT the "good guy" in this, I will admit to a certain satisfaction at seeing them take the wind out of DeSantis' sails and do so with such finesse. XD
Which dystopian future do you want? The static clockwork control of Disney, or the reactionary fascism of Florida?
Disney is not attempting to impose their personal religious beliefs on everyone who visits their park. DeSantis, not so much.
They're the victim, if you don't want to call, them the good guy. There are legitimate complaints against Disney, but in this case they exercised their 1st Amendment free speech rights, and Florida wrote legislation targeting them in retaliation for that speech.
@@vxicepickxv They are not, in the end, mutually exclusive. The only distinction is that Disney has crunched the numbers, looked down the road, and accepted that being more inclusive and supporting diversity is more economically profitable for them in the long term. Cynical as that is, when weighed against the blatant authoritarianisms and regressive policies and stances DeSantis and the GOP it makes them, if not an ally, the less awful of the two.
Doesn't excuse Disney's own shady, monopolistic antics or employment practices, nor mean we can't or shouldn't call them out for it. Again, they are not and probably never will be "the good guy." But I see this more about making DeSantis lose than helping them win.
At least for now and in this particular circumstance.
@@SuprousOxide I agree. There's plenty that can be said about Disney. But in this particular instance, they really were the victim of open and blatant retaliation by the government.
If Disney had decided to go down that path instead, they would have had a disastrously strong case against Florida.

I have experience this over and over again in my work life. Most of the Bull sh!ters persuade people by their confidence. My dad made a snide comment about how Disney was going to be taken down by desantis when it all started. I laughed and said “Disney will be fine… desantis will lose everything if he pushes this too much”.
Disney would be welcomed by a new state if they don’t get what they need, meaning desantis loses OR they get what they want anyway and desantis loses.
California would love to have Hollywood and Disney in the same state and has more than enough resources and empty space to attract them.

You are correct. Everything Disney manages has to be pristine, that is their brand. When you visit all those roads look brand new, there’s never any garbage anywhere, there’s nothing falling apart. All Pristine. The state would never ever be able to maintain that kind of upkeep.
In your earlier video you said, in regard to Disney lawyers, that "Piranha's have more compassion." Glad to see that comparison held up.
Why would Disney's lawyers NOT give their corporate employer their full representation and effort? To do less is what attorneys (ahem) of lesser competence do, and pass it off as "oh well, we did our best, but the facts were against us." DeSantis and the Florida Legislature acted like goons and got kicked in their balls - well deserved I say!
Disney must have had a regularly-updated plan for Florida messing with their district.
When this broke about a year ago, I thought exactly the same thing so I paid little attention. My guess is the plan to deal with this has existed since the RCID was first formed. Walt Disney approached Walt Disney World being mindful of what didn’t please him about Disneyland. And Roy Disney wanted to do right by his brother.
A company *that* heavy has business continuity plans for miles. They probably have documents entertaining options in the case of aliens landing.
It feels very strange rooting for Disney corp. but the image of the mouse giving DeSatan the finger is just sooooo good.
I like the quote “No matter how the wind howls, the mountain cannot bow to it” #Mulan
Disney sees Ron as nothing but a slight breeze. Disney knows they bring in such an enormous revenue stream and so many jobs that FL simply can’t do without their top notch operations. Also, Disney has been operating in many countries for years (celebrating 100 years now), they know the political scene will change and they can just out live it.
Ron DeMeatball should fix home insurance industry in Florida instead of messing with Disney!
Yup
He can't win points with the right by taking on actual problems faced by Floridians. He fights with Disney over "woke" cancellations so he can position himself in national politics. He couldn't care less about the state as anything more than a stepping stone for his presidential ambitions.
Seems to me that the Disney lawyers want to play "corn hole" with desantis. Hope he enjoys it. 😉
Why would DeSantis actually do something that might REALLY BENEFIT the people of Florida?! He only practices " Performative Politics" after all...🙄
He's receiving to much in campaign donations from the insurance industry to fix it
Normally having a corporation be more powerful than the state scares the shit out of me, in this case, the state scares the shit out of me, as much as Disney's lawyers... All this scary situation, around an illusion of happiness
Zooming way out from the immediate Desantis/Disney tussling is a larger consideration I haven't seen mentioned. One of the primary things MOST governors (as well as municipal elected officials) strive for and like to tout is bringing industry to their states (or cities). Florida's governor has picked a fight with the state's largest employer and primary tourist attraction (and thus industry) over little more than sheer political showmanship. I can't help but wonder, what industrial company or large business would possibly consider locating a major facility in Florida, seeing how the political powers that be may put them in the crosshairs just to score points with an angry base (who could probably do with some well-paying industrial jobs)?
In an apparent fit of pique over Disney so daring to stand up to DeFascist's bigoted stance on LBGTQ. DeFascist's racist stance on CRT doesn't help either. Businesses hate being associated with racism and bigotry, since normal people are so against them. Authoritarians require an enemy to galvanize their base. Judaism as the enemy for a widespread movement pretty much ended in the middle of the last century. People of color as the enemy for a widespread movement is in the process of ending. So they needed a new enemy. With the evangelicals being such a large part of the base, LBGTQ is now the enemy dejure for the GOP Sedition Caucus.
My husband and I have been artist/illustrators for 30+ years, from the beginning we've known that you do NOT f**k with Disney.

Honestly, I'm surprised the Disney lawyer's vacation didn't include a torture chamber.
Of course it didn't. The lawyer was on vacation from work.
So Florida has to pay for roads and such in the district. And if they let the maintenance fail Disney can sue the state for it.
🤣🤣🤣
@@stevevasta I mean, Ron just got spanked by the mouse. And I'm loving it.
Disney pays RCID for the maintenance. That's why the infrastructure on Disney property is so much better than anywhere else in Florida. I expect they will continue to do so.
Florida gave Disney someone to blame for any public facing problem and easily the issues Disney World has been catching bad PR for for about a decade. Disney World has issues with keeping as clean as they use to: claim the board is in charge of trash collection. Disney has issues related to movement between the parks or transit: blame the board. Disney World regulars complain about overcrowding and that the park is not innovating or expanding: say the board isn't letting you expand or do large construction jobs.
You warned 'em not to take on The Mouse!
I was at a convention last weekend at the Anaheim Convention Center, which is separated from Disneyland by a street called Katella Ave. A group of local Westboro wannabes tried to disrupt the convention (they protest the con center quite regularly). Con center security finally got fed up with them and herded them out to the sidewalk facing Katella, where their bullhorns and hellfire signs would be a nuisance to Disney guests. It's well-known that Disney park security considers themselves entitled to police any area within view or earshot of the parks, so the bigots got about half a sentence into Leviticus through their bullhorn before they got ... well, whatever the Disney version of black-bagged is.
And that's Disney Park SECURITY. I never want to meet their LAWYERS.
The abolition of those privileges was reversed cause they didn't know bond debt and taxes will have to be absorbed by surrounding counties. Now, we find out they didn't even read the contracts? I know they're burning books down there, but for god's sake read.
can't help but think in addition to this, a certain state governor is going to find it extremely difficult (or just extremely expensive) to get any advertising space on Disney-owned media outlets
That is crazy scary but hilarious at the same time.
And Disney might throw some "spare change" at his competitor, if any. IJS ...😂

And now Mr. Meatball will waste millions of taxpayer dollars to fight it.
I've worked for Disney. And the backend of Disney that most people don't see... They're very serious, so that what the general public sees is beautiful and perfect and happy.
I had to laugh when reading about this today. They published notification about the meeting in a local newspaper, which is what was required by law. In this day and age that is probably one of the least effective ways to communicate something to a broad audience. But it is hilarious to me that DeSantis didn't have people watching for this kind of thing, like he stopped before the finish line to celebrate and didn't watch for anyone else just sauntering past.
They don't seem to notice anything that doesn't involve news crews where they can regurgitate talking points and deflect attention from anything concerning their constituents.

It's probably not a good idea to go after the biggest business in Florida that creates so much tourism for Florida, especially considering tourism is what drives our economy
It blew my mind too. If Disney shut down the park and didn't sell it they'd do untold devastation to the local economy. I think what DeSantis was banking on is that Disney would take massive financial damage if they did so. What he seems to have forgotten about is that Disney has more the best lawyers in the business and likes to keep them occupied.
I don’t understand supporting government folks who seem to just want to shoot the economy in the foot.
The GOP isn't smart.
Duh??? 🤦🏾♀️🤦🏾♀️
Disney lawyers have a well-earned reputation for being smart and cutthroat, so this shouldn't come as a big surprise. I'm not necessarily a fan of their approach but in this case I'm thrilled with it. And I love their elaborate description of perpetuity.
Disney's lawyers are prolly as cold-hearted as they come -- I still remember a news article from some years back about a daycare near Disney. The kids at the school had painted their favorite Disney characters all over the building. When Disney found out, they unleashed the lawyers, who instructed the daycare to remove the painted characters on the grounds of copyright infringement or be sued for billions (the value of each character's IP) that a little daycare just didn't have.
So, as the kids looked on, most of them crying because they were too young to understand, (yes, they did this during the weekday, with the daycare in operation) a team of painters whitewashed the walls and covered up all the character art.
If DeSantis thinks he can run roughshod over people who have zero hesitation and zero regret about doing things like that, then he is in for a VERY rude wake-up call haha! ^_^
To be fair, with the mismash of copyright law in the US, if you are not proactive on copyright infringement, you can lose it.

The current youngest descendant of King Charles has yet to turn *two*. Even if some horrible accident wiped them all out tomorrow (heaven forbid,) Disney still has them by the throat until 2044 when Meatball Ron would be 65.

@@IggyStardust1967 I think it was just all of his currently living descendants, which includes a grandchild that hasn't even turned two yet.
@@IggyStardust1967 All descendants that will ever exist. I think this is a traditional way of legally saying as long as the kingdom lasts. It is not a normal legal language in the U.S. but is used in Europe. In English common law ( which the U.S. uses when not specifically overridden by written law) leases can only list 99 as a maximum length ( like Hongkong was leased from the 1890s to 1990s) so this gets around that.

In perpetuity is a dangerous phrase.
In college back in the 1970s, I read "Mass-Mediated Culture" (M. Real, 1977) which gave explicit details of how controlled Disney World's environment is, how every single building and every aspect of operations is deeply manipulated for effect, and how their Security can reach any point anywhere on the premises in less than 1 minute. And this was in the days before wireless, before the internet, when video surveillance was barely nascent. Made me never ever want to go there. And I never have.
So you really don't understand how it important it is to feel safe in your environment. When my daughter was little we went to Disney every year and the best part about it was never worrying if it was safe to walk down the sidewalk.
Kind of like the series "The Good Place". A pretend heaven that is actually hell.

I stayed at Niagara Falls Canada It was a sight watching the streets and sidewalks being cleaned every morning they even changed out flowers on the light poles can only imagine the activity and effort that go into the production of Disney World
My family would go to WDW every 3 years and yeah, every time we went save the last one, the place was CLEAN. And then in 2017 (the last time we went) we were in Magic Kingdom somewhere and I spotted a piece of paper on the ground and thought, "Huh. That's odd," and there after, I would every so often spot a discarded wrapper or a dropped schedule on the ground. At the end of the trip I was wondering exactly what was going on at WDW at the time because those early signs of "relaxing cleanliness" was everywhere.
I've stayed at Disney World during the "Off Season." Drove in very early morning and saw two light poles' repairs being finished, a road work crew finishing up, a painting crew collecting their gear from touching up signs, and the grounds crew touching up the trees and bushes, while I was driving around looking for my resort. I was the only (guest) car on the road.
