The story of KMS Bismarck is one which, if it hadn't actually happened, most people would write off as fiction. During its maiden voyage, KMS Bismarck and KMS Prinz Eugen were tasked with obliterating any and all Allied shipping in the Atlantic. Is was pure chance that the pair were spotted departing Norway. They were lost, only to be discovered by the HMS Dorsetshire - a veritable rowboat compared to even the Prinz Eugen, but its advanced radar system allowed Dorsetshire to track Bismarck while remaining safely outside German radar. The German ships were ambushed by a small British armada, including the HMS Prince of Wales and the HMS Hood - the latter the pride of the British Empire and the flagship of the British Navy as a whole, despite being an older battlecruiser (rather than a fully-fledged battleship). During the engagement, KMS Bismarck completely obliterated HMS Hood with a single shot. (The precise details of how remain hotly debated among naval enthusiasts.) HMS Hood had a crew of over 1400 men - only three sailors survived the ship's destruction. HMS Prince of Wales was heavily damaged and forced to retreat. The remaining British ships (including Dorsetshire and Price of Wales) attempted to resume trailing Bismarck and Prinz Eugen, but the German Admiral Günther Lütjen was now wise to their tactic. Bismarck turned towards the British as if to engage, forcing them to scatter and both German ships slipped away in the resultant chaos. EVERY Allied ship under British command was ordered to scrub all current missions and were tasked with a single objective - "Sink the Bismarck!" Once again through sheer chance, the codebreakers at Bletchley Park intercepted a fairly insecure transmission by Lütjen which reported that Bismarck was headed for Brest, France. Only the HMS Ark Royal (a carrier with only dilapidated Fairey Swordfish biplanes) was able to close within strike range before KMS Bismarck reached the safety of Luftwaffe air cover stationed in France. In their rush to attack KMS Bismarck, the Swordfish pilots accidentally loosed their torpedoes against the USS Sheffield - once again through sheer chance, the new magnetic detonators of the torpedoes malfunctioned and the Sheffield suffered no damage. Admiral James Somerville risked a second attack wave, despite being perilously close to Luftwaffe air defenses. Once again through sheer chance, the Swordfish biplanes (each equipped with a single torpedo, now with older detonators) proved to be too slow for Bismarck's anti-aircraft stations to target properly. Yet again through sheer chance, a single torpedo struck Bismarck's port rudder during an evasive turn - the damage locked the rudder in position, crippling Bismarck's ability to maneuver and trapping it in a turn away from Luftwaffe air cover. This fortuitous damage gave the rest of the warships pursuing Bismarck the chance to close. Battleships HMS King George V and HMS Rodney (equipped with the biggest guns in the British fleet) unleashed everything they had at KMS Bismarck for nearly a full hour. HMS Rodney even had a few torpedoes to fire at KMS Bismarck, marking the only time in history when one battleship torpedoed another. Multiple sources reported that KMS Bismarck had taken so many hits (at least 400 of the 2800+ massive shells fired) that its hull glowed red and sent billows of steam every time it encountered a wave. The battle raged until most of the attacking British ships were forced to disengage for lack of fuel and ammunition, but still KMS Bismarck refused to go down despite all its weaponry being destroyed. What German crew still survived refused to allow KMS Bismarck to be captured and activated scuttling charges throughout the ship. Dorsetshire and Maori managed to rescue 110 German sailors before a suspected U-boat forced them to abandon their efforts for fear of sharing Bismarck's fate; another 5 were later recovered from life rafts by German ships. Despite the fact that they had been unable to sink Bismarck, British admiralty claimed the victory as avenging HMS Hood.

react to the final solution by sabaton next. And id like to tell you about a the ship somewhat. after it sank the famous British ship the HMS hood an entire royal navy fleet was sent to hunt it down and sink it. The Bismarck knowing it was being looked for headed for occupied France but was discovered by the British royal air force. as it showed in the video one British plane hit it with a torpedo and destroyed one of its rutters causing it to go in circles and become a sitting duck. it was hit about 400 times but almost all of these just bounced off. it took about two days to sink it. the British had 13 ships, but the most they ever had shooting it was 5. many people believe that the ship was scuttled (purposely sank by her crew) and that if it hadn't been it could have stayed afloat for another half a day.
Also Extra Credits have a great video series on it.

Thanks for turning me onto this band. Truly appreciative. They're awesome.
It took three hours of pounding from a fleet and air-force for the Bismarck to sink. Powerful ship.
Cyricist001 The Bismarck's own crew scuttled it, so in the end the Bismarck's crew were the ones who did the sinking.
kabob 007 Not true it was torpedoed
alphaspursncowboys The Torpedo damaged the rudder so because they could only spin in circles the crew scuttled the Bismarck. The Bismarck was a tough ship (nothing could pin its armor... At least nothing at Sea at the time) but it got hit in what is literally a ship's Achilles and was basically rendered useless.
@@alphaspursncowboys it is true. None of the torpedo hits broke through the armor. She sank due to opened sea water valves in the hull.
Examinations of the wreck corroborated the crew's claims.
The crew scuttled him because they didn't want the allies capturing him and using him against them.

EVERY Allied ship under British command was ordered to scrub all current missions and were tasked with a single objective - "Sink the Bismarck!"
Once again through sheer chance, the codebreakers at Bletchley Park intercepted a fairly insecure transmission by Lütjen which reported that Bismarck was headed for Brest, France.
