Interesting factoid: Joakim Broden has no vocal training and never intended to be a singer. When Sabaton formed he was the keyboard player and had written a few songs which the band asked him to sing to get an idea of the melodies. The band did not have a lead singer and asked him to fill in until they could find one. As Joakim puts it, "They never did...lazy bastards."
Similar to Pär who never wanted to become a bass player but if I recall correctly they already had guitarists but no bass player so he went with playing bass instead 😂
I loved a lifetime of war but I can’t enjoy it anymore. The Swedish original had much better lyrics. It hits so much harder on every level. Every few months I’ll just throw it on repeat for hours
You should listen to him singing in his Swedish mother language - totally different. He said himself he emphasises the R in Englsih so much to mask the Swedish accent. "En livstid i krig" live Fun Fact -- the Bismarck is the only ship ever referred to as "he".
Rolling the R is often used for emphasis, I don't think it would fit "En Livstid i krig". Many Swedish artists in the 50's and 60's used this technique... One that comes to mind is Lill-babs, check the song "Tuff Brud I Lyxförpackning" and watch for the rolls.
Lindemann refers to her as a she in his speech in 1940 during the "Indienststellung". One of the very best things about Sabaton is their attention to historic detail and accuracy. Showing those Fairey Swordfish biplanes, launching from Ark Royal and hugging the wavetops to try to get torpedo hits on Bismark --- this video shows it better than anything I've seen.
Except for the video for "the Unkillable Soldier" which has several anachronisms/inaccuracies. But that's because Adrian Carton de Wiart's life and service was batshit insane. :)
If I recall correctly, they even re-uploaded their "White Death" video to reflect the fact that Simo Häyha didn't use a scope on his rifle, and the original version had it there
They probably get the history correct more often than Hollywood. Of coarse they do work with a historian who moonlights in a few of their videos, and Indie helps host the Sabaton History Channel on UA-cam.
they do a damn good job at telling a good story through music even if you don't understand the full context. plus, if anyone IS a little lost with what the song is about, there is the sabaton history channel that so thoughtfully explains it to you.
Now imagine, if you will, you're a lookout on HMS Suffolk...and you're patrolling the Denmark Strait north of Iceland... And you see THAT emerging out of the fog at you. Something five times your displacement, with guns twice the size yours, and armor that your guns can't even scratch. Oh, and it's just as fast as you are.

In one of those oddities, my grandpa on my mom’s side and great-uncle on my dad’s side were on the Saratoga, but they never met til my parents got married. When they told me about Iwo Jima, the bombs and kamikazes (which I learned the specifics later: 5 bombs and 3 kamikazes hit the ship in 6 minutes) I became fascinated with WWII, although I admit I know the Pacific better than the Atlantic.

I would seriously recommend you checking out their cover of Motörhead's '1916'. The video is amazing, and it's a great cover to boot (with Mikkey Dee and Phil Campbell showing up in the video to pay their respects to Lemmy).

@@32a34a Yet a hundred or so sailors made it off the ship and into the water. Many were picked up by British destroyers. Reports of U-Boats in the area caused them to scarper and the U-boats couldn't pick up the rest.
The Bismarck did hit the Hoods rear ammunition magazine snapping the ship in two. I can't say I'm surprised so few survived. The Bismarck itself wasn't directly sunk, but scuttled as everything above deck was in ruins.
@@CrashCanuck537 Also took several torpedo hits, possibly including torpedoes from Rodney. But everything from the waterline up was holed and anything that could burn was, it was probably a matter of time before the magazines cooked off.
@@PeteOtton HMS Dorsetshire picked up some German sailors after firing the last torpedoes into him - most of which did not go off. U-47 was there and picked up some survivors but had scared off the RN heavies and escorts. A German trawler later picked up some more.

In October, I saw Sabaton for the second time and it was just as epic as the first time I ever saw them in September of 2022. In October, Sabaton was on tour with Judas Preist. Sabaton is my all-time favorite band and I was in their 0.5% of top listeners on Spotify this year.
Great reaction Beth. As you are a vocal coach I can strongly recommend that you listen to one of Sabatons two lead guitarists (both are lead). Tommy Johansson is not only a very good guitarist he is also an extraordinary singer (recently left Sabaton for to continue with his other band Majestic). He has his own UA-cam channel. I suggest that you listen to his cover of You raise me up, singing one octave higher than the Josh Groban version. Really amazing actually!

That "lucky fellow" was actually the captain of the boat the band was on. If you follow the story of the video, you see where the Captain of the Bismarck carves something into the pocket watch/compass and later gives it to the young lad when he is dying on the ship. He survives and you see the pocket watch again in his hand when he is rescued by the allies... and right at the end when they are going back to the harbour you see the captain of the boat pulling said pocket watch out of his pocket, looking at it, probably reminiscing about his time on the Bismarck. It's a neat storytelling element that binds everything together.
Yeah correct. The Bismarck was being shadowed by british cruisers after the battle of Denmark strait. Bismarck was hit by a few shells from hood and was going back to France for repairs. The British fleet only had the carrier Ark Royal in position to slow them down. After the torpedo attact Bismarck s rudder was demolished and sent the Bismarck in circles cause it couldn't steer. Allowing British battleships and cruisers to catch up and finally torpedo and send shells into her leading to her sinking
@@shawnengles8771 Don't forget the night before that final showdown a pack of RN Tribals with a Polish destroyer made several torpedo attacks in rough seas that may have had the only affect of keeping the Bismark's crew awake and on edge.
This was a fantastic winner for the Metal Theme. You're right. The compass is significant, but I haven't found reliable sources as to why. Fairly reasonable to assume the compass taken from the Bismark captain is the one the tugboat skipper has. Some folks point out the numbers scratched onto it match fairly well the coordinates where the ship sank. Others believe the skipper is a descendant of the rescued German sailor: son or grandson.
I figure the tugboat captain was the son of the Bismarck sailor who was rescued. I didn't think it was a compass, but a pocketwatch (which would have been more common at the time). Look at compasses back then and they typically didn't look like that, but pocketwatches did.
Great react. Has she heard any of Tommy's solo works. Jokim is talent for sure, but as far as singing goes, holy moly Tommy is talented. He's left the band to pursue his solo work, but god can he shred and sing.
Love his vocals. Most power metal vocals have a higher voice which is a hit or miss for me. His lower range is just awesome. All of their songs sound epic.
You might want to check out Christmas Truce-it’s one of the most powerful and emotional war songs. The production is absolutely stunning, and Floor Jansen’s beautiful voice at the end takes it to another level. With Christmas just around the corner, it fits perfectly! 😊

i believe you did a good job nailing why sabaton is so damn good as artists. heck, metal in my experience is usually just obnoxious screeching and bad music, but sabaton is heavy metal PERFECTED! their words are easy enough to follow, joakim perfectly executes the vocals, history is a passion of mine so they have a good story or message to tell in their songs, the instrumentation is just about perfect, and they often do good with the music videos. plus, when you go "behind the scenes" they seem like pretty chill dudes who i could probably see hanging out with despite their aggressive appearance.
I hope you can eventually catch one of their shows live.... they are amazing live, and some of the goofiest guys, but this is what you get when History nerds decide to do metal :)
If you noticed, the Captain of the boat they go out searching for the Bismarck on had a locket at the end of the song... the same locket the seaman was given by the Captain of the Bismarck as the ship was sinking.
If you want to hear him sing in a low, soft whisper, check out The Hammer Has Fallen. It's one of their earliest songs, before they focused on military history.
Sabaton does a wonderful job. Thanks for reviewing it. And lets take a moment to think about the brave sailors and soldiers on both the Bismark and the Hood that lost their lifes doing theit duty in a mad and senseless war.
Sabaton's a wonderous rabbit hole to dive into especially if, like me, you're a history buff AND a metalhead. You now absolutely must check out The Christmas Truce, all about the rl truce of 1914, though that might actually be best saved for December since it's relatively close. Shiroyama and Rorke's Drift are another couple I'd recommend off the top of my head but I could go on.
I love how the chorus sounds almost like a marching army. The way Joakim emphasizes it like PRIDE of a NATION the BEAST made of STEEL each word sounds like a stomp
Wargaming's World of Tanks division also did the CG for Primo Victoria and Steel Commander, plus added a Sabaton themed Tank to their World of Tanks Games.
I strongly suggest you to react to "En Livstig I Krig - Great war Live in Gothenburg" . The song is sung in swedish, so dont forget to follow the lyrics. It´s a masterpiece and very Emotional!
The captain of the fishing vessel was the son or grandson of the survivor you see at the end of the video. It's the same compass with the coordinates inscribed.
One detail in the video that I found great was that the Captain of the search vessel was the same young man saved by the brittish fleet :) Cpt. of the Bismarck gave him that pocket watch.
Extra fact-The lyrics "bound by Iron and blood" are a reference to a comment Otto von Bismark had made years before WW1 about trouble brewing in the Balkins and it could only be solved with "iron and blood"
I do love the fact that they don't outright state in the song that the allies sunk the Bismarck as it is disputed on whether the final torpedoes were the ones to cause him to start sinking or if it was the remaining crew that opened essentially scuttling hatches that would have flooded the ship. Regardless, he took a hell of a pummeling, and if I remember right, many of the British ships actually were nearly out of ammo. Another fun fact, Gunther Lutjens was the commanding officer on board during the Bismarck's First and final mission.

Joakim really leans into the pronunciation problems swedes often have with the English language. Like you said with J-sound in iron, fire and sight, hard K-sounds, rolling R's and american'ish A-sounds. I also think he does it in a very deliberate way.
6:34 and at least a dozen of the Bismarck crew and its naval regiment were captured and sent to Canada. Their treatment was really good from what I found out. There are at least 2 known to have stayed and lived in Canada. Helmut Keune being the only named individual, the others name remains unknown. Keune died in 1969 and it is unknown if he married and had children or was single
Kriegsmarine - 'krieg' = war, 'marine' = sea (literal), so Navy. Great band, these guys. They know their stuff too. Hope you react to some more. Those who have already suggested 'En livstid i Krig' know what they are talking about, I add my vote to that. Also recommend: 'Winged Hussars', 'The Last Stand', 'Shiroyama', 'Soldier of Heaven' and 'Race to the Sea'. Plenty of other great songs, I can't list them all here, lol. Oh and '40:1' and 'Uprising' (from I think it's Woodstock) in Poland are well worth a watch too, the crowd was so invested.

This band has done so much to bring bring a new appeal base to history, to which I cannot thank them enough. Another amazing track and event depicted in such, "Hearts of Iron," about the men from Germany's 12th Armee (Wehrmacht) who effectively surrendered Berlin in order to save countless civilians and incapacitated soldiers from certain Soviet slaughter. Personal sidenote: My great-grandfather was an officer under General Wenck's command during those final days.

"Primo Victoria", the name of the boat they were on, is also the name of another Sabaton song - worth a look! They froze on the boat, Joakim was probably bashing his leg to make sure it was still there! My Dad was RAN. His ship chased the KMS Scheer after HMS Jervis Bay was sunk - lucky for him and me he did not catch it, that time.

When the Bismarck wreck was eventually found, despite having over 400 rounds fired into her at point blank range, it was discovered that there were no holes in the hull caused by artillery or torpedoes, which meant that the ship only sunk after the crew set scuttling charges. That's right. As a final act of defiance, the Bismarck withstood the full power of the Royal Navy and still refused go down.
HMS HOOD was the pride of the british navy . Bismarck famously sunk it with one shot . According to historians , the shot hit one of the powder magazines . The whole ship exploded and less than 15 seconds later it had gone beneath the waves . The HOOD had a crew of around 1800 ........3 survived .
Fun Fact, the Bismarck was scuttled by the Germans themselfs instead of sunk bij enemy fire. From the wreckage was discovered that is has over 2000 impact marks and holes and was still able to sail, albeit in only a large circle since the rudder was destroyed
Interesting fact: The old guy manning the boat (The one holding the compass at the end) is the son of the last survivor of the Bismark sinking. PS: Watch the Animated story video for "No Bullets Fly," but don''t forget the tissues on that one.

In October, I saw Sabaton for the second time and it was just as epic as the first time I ever saw them in September of 2022. In October, Sabaton was on tour with Judas Preist. Sabaton is my all-time favorite band and I was in their 0.5% of top listeners on Spotify this year.
Dreadnaught is my very favorite of theirs. It's simply chilling to hear it live! Go Sabaton!

Great reaction Beth. As you are a vocal coach I can strongly recommend that you listen to one of Sabatons two lead guitarists (both are lead). Tommy Johansson is not only a very good guitarist he is also an extraordinary singer (recently left Sabaton for to continue with his other band Majestic). He has his own UA-cam channel. I suggest that you listen to his cover of You raise me up, singing one octave higher than the Josh Groban version. Really amazing actually!

Sabaton is a great group to review.
That "lucky fellow" was actually the captain of the boat the band was on. If you follow the story of the video, you see where the Captain of the Bismarck carves something into the pocket watch/compass and later gives it to the young lad when he is dying on the ship. He survives and you see the pocket watch again in his hand when he is rescued by the allies... and right at the end when they are going back to the harbour you see the captain of the boat pulling said pocket watch out of his pocket, looking at it, probably reminiscing about his time on the Bismarck. It's a neat storytelling element that binds everything together.
This was the moment I found out that Floor was married to a member of Sabaton. I extremely appreciated that tidbit!

Yeah correct. The Bismarck was being shadowed by british cruisers after the battle of Denmark strait. Bismarck was hit by a few shells from hood and was going back to France for repairs. The British fleet only had the carrier Ark Royal in position to slow them down. After the torpedo attact Bismarck s rudder was demolished and sent the Bismarck in circles cause it couldn't steer. Allowing British battleships and cruisers to catch up and finally torpedo and send shells into her leading to her sinking
@@shawnengles8771 Don't forget the night before that final showdown a pack of RN Tribals with a Polish destroyer made several torpedo attacks in rough seas that may have had the only affect of keeping the Bismark's crew awake and on edge.

This was a fantastic winner for the Metal Theme. You're right.
The compass is significant, but I haven't found reliable sources as to why. Fairly reasonable to assume the compass taken from the Bismark captain is the one the tugboat skipper has. Some folks point out the numbers scratched onto it match fairly well the coordinates where the ship sank. Others believe the skipper is a descendant of the rescued German sailor: son or grandson.
The captain scribbled Bismarcks last position on it.
He’s apparently the grandson of the sailor and the compass he’s holding is the actual one from the Bismarck. It was loaned for the shoot.
I figure the tugboat captain was the son of the Bismarck sailor who was rescued. I didn't think it was a compass, but a pocketwatch (which would have been more common at the time). Look at compasses back then and they typically didn't look like that, but pocketwatches did.

You should really listen to Sabatons Christmas Truce, in my opinion it's a master piece. There is also a little but great surprise in the end.
Great react. Has she heard any of Tommy's solo works. Jokim is talent for sure, but as far as singing goes, holy moly Tommy is talented. He's left the band to pursue his solo work, but god can he shred and sing.
Love his vocals. Most power metal vocals have a higher voice which is a hit or miss for me. His lower range is just awesome. All of their songs sound epic.
I love the sabaton historical songs, particularly this song and the 4 they did in collaboration with Paradox for the game Europa Universalis 4.
You might want to check out Christmas Truce-it’s one of the most powerful and emotional war songs. The production is absolutely stunning, and Floor Jansen’s beautiful voice at the end takes it to another level. With Christmas just around the corner, it fits perfectly! 😊

i believe you did a good job nailing why sabaton is so damn good as artists. heck, metal in my experience is usually just obnoxious screeching and bad music, but sabaton is heavy metal PERFECTED! their words are easy enough to follow, joakim perfectly executes the vocals, history is a passion of mine so they have a good story or message to tell in their songs, the instrumentation is just about perfect, and they often do good with the music videos. plus, when you go "behind the scenes" they seem like pretty chill dudes who i could probably see hanging out with despite their aggressive appearance.
I hope you can eventually catch one of their shows live.... they are amazing live, and some of the goofiest guys, but this is what you get when History nerds decide to do metal :)

If you noticed, the Captain of the boat they go out searching for the Bismarck on had a locket at the end of the song... the same locket the seaman was given by the Captain of the Bismarck as the ship was sinking.

Sabaton's a wonderous rabbit hole to dive into especially if, like me, you're a history buff AND a metalhead. You now absolutely must check out The Christmas Truce, all about the rl truce of 1914, though that might actually be best saved for December since it's relatively close. Shiroyama and Rorke's Drift are another couple I'd recommend off the top of my head but I could go on.
I love how the chorus sounds almost like a marching army. The way Joakim emphasizes it like PRIDE of a NATION the BEAST made of STEEL each word sounds like a stomp
Not just funding, World of Warships developer did the CG. Just super impressive all around.
Wargaming's World of Tanks division also did the CG for Primo Victoria and Steel Commander, plus added a Sabaton themed Tank to their World of Tanks Games.

The captain of the fishing vessel was the son or grandson of the survivor you see at the end of the video. It's the same compass with the coordinates inscribed.

One detail in the video that I found great was that the Captain of the search vessel was the same young man saved by the brittish fleet :) Cpt. of the Bismarck gave him that pocket watch.

Extra fact-The lyrics "bound by Iron and blood" are a reference to a comment Otto von Bismark had made years before WW1 about trouble brewing in the Balkins and it could only be solved with "iron and blood"
I do love the fact that they don't outright state in the song that the allies sunk the Bismarck as it is disputed on whether the final torpedoes were the ones to cause him to start sinking or if it was the remaining crew that opened essentially scuttling hatches that would have flooded the ship. Regardless, he took a hell of a pummeling, and if I remember right, many of the British ships actually were nearly out of ammo.
Another fun fact, Gunther Lutjens was the commanding officer on board during the Bismarck's First and final mission.

Joakim really leans into the pronunciation problems swedes often have with the English language. Like you said with J-sound in iron, fire and sight, hard K-sounds, rolling R's and american'ish A-sounds. I also think he does it in a very deliberate way.

Helmut Keune being the only named individual, the others name remains unknown. Keune died in 1969 and it is unknown if he married and had children or was single

Great band, these guys. They know their stuff too. Hope you react to some more. Those who have already suggested 'En livstid i Krig' know what they are talking about, I add my vote to that. Also recommend: 'Winged Hussars', 'The Last Stand', 'Shiroyama', 'Soldier of Heaven' and 'Race to the Sea'. Plenty of other great songs, I can't list them all here, lol.
Oh and '40:1' and 'Uprising' (from I think it's Woodstock) in Poland are well worth a watch too, the crowd was so invested.

This band has done so much to bring bring a new appeal base to history, to which I cannot thank them enough.
Another amazing track and event depicted in such, "Hearts of Iron," about the men from Germany's 12th Armee (Wehrmacht) who effectively surrendered Berlin in order to save countless civilians and incapacitated soldiers from certain Soviet slaughter. Personal sidenote: My great-grandfather was an officer under General Wenck's command during those final days.

"Primo Victoria", the name of the boat they were on, is also the name of another Sabaton song - worth a look! They froze on the boat, Joakim was probably bashing his leg to make sure it was still there! My Dad was RAN. His ship chased the KMS Scheer after HMS Jervis Bay was sunk - lucky for him and me he did not catch it, that time.
Indy Neidell is also one of the VO artists who did the "Probably the best beer in the world" voice lines in Carlsberg commercials.
When Bismarck sank the Hood there were just 3 survivers out of a crew of around 1400
And they came back for a reunion for decades afterward. Sad day when the last survivor had no shipmates left.

When the Bismarck wreck was eventually found, despite having over 400 rounds fired into her at point blank range, it was discovered that there were no holes in the hull caused by artillery or torpedoes, which meant that the ship only sunk after the crew set scuttling charges. That's right. As a final act of defiance, the Bismarck withstood the full power of the Royal Navy and still refused go down.
HMS HOOD was the pride of the british navy . Bismarck famously sunk it with one shot . According to historians , the shot hit one of the powder magazines . The whole ship exploded and less than 15 seconds later it had gone beneath the waves . The HOOD had a crew of around 1800 ........3 survived .

From the wreckage was discovered that is has over 2000 impact marks and holes and was still able to sail, albeit in only a large circle since the rudder was destroyed

Fun fact, Bismarck was found by Swedish pilots when it was stationed away in the Norwegian fjords and took aerial pictures of it and sent them to the brits and that is the only reason to why they found it

If you didn’t notice the pocket watch in the video was from the captain of the Bismarck that mean the captain of the boat that sabaton was on served on the Bismarck or at least his like dad or grandfather did

I'll not forget my introduction to Sabaton - i did not even know the name of the band for quite some time - i stumbled upon a youtube-video yeeeaaars ago. It was about Sabaton's song Primo Victoria -and it was mixed with video-sequences from the game Hellgate: London - needless to say, it stuck with me.
