  • Krik of Black Owl Outdoors compares and contrasts the Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack with the Vanquest Mobius Vpacker Bag. Both bags are modern tactical takes on the classic woodsman's haversacks & shoulder bags. While both bags are excellent quality, the small details are what leads Krik to his decision on which bag he would choose.

Will the strap from the Janus extension pouch work to extend the strap on the front? I think they are the same size. I got rid of my Versipack or would test it. Too small for me but great for a vehicle bag or day bag. Good comparison ;)-

I'm not certain. I've thought about just sewing additional length onto the strap. Very simple. But I wanted to demonstrate that they don't come with that capability. Thanks for watching. -Krik

The janus will work on the Maxped cause they use the same 2 inch buckle design. It will not work on the Vanquest cause of them using their style of 2 inch buckle (the Rock Lockster) for the main shoulder strap. However You probably can slide the buckle through the back of a Janus and have it work as an added pouch without extending the length of the strap at all.

Kinda like Coke vs Pepsi, or Nike vs Adidas. Everyone will have a preference between the two. When it comes to my gear i'll pay for quality every time. Maxpedition hasn't failed me yet and i trust their products. As they say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery, so if another company makes a "clone" but does it with good materials and workmanship, i'll give them a look, but in the end i tend to go with the originator. I do think Vanquest has some good ideas with the high vis interiors, and reverse zipper tracks, etc. and that new pack they make looks nice too. Competition in the marketplace is good, it fosters innovation. Thanks for the vid, aloha.

You missed a small pocket on the Maxpedition just under the metal clip on the shoulder strap. It's small but it fits my 3" folding knife as well as a OLight S10 Baton clipped in there. Also when you were showing the water bottle retention of the Maxpedition, if you slip that Velcro bit through the loop in your waterbottle cap, it's far more effective than just running it over the top of the bottle. Plus then you can torque it down so it never moves.
I've done many day hikes with the Maxpedition and I love it...it's my choice as well (obviously, because I bought it).
And why do I have to be a turtle? That was not a good thing to be called in bootcamp...I'm not sure what it means when you say it, but I'm guessing it's not the same.

rogue109 thanks for sharing! and while krik and i have never been to bootcamp, i can almost assure you when we use the word turtle it isn't the same definition. people with backpacks look like they have on a turtle shell... plus krik was a big TMNT guy in the 90's. thanks for watching! - stony

do you know of any GOOD LITER SIZE backpack with these features of the two bags ? Have you heard anything about the nonbenefits to a sling pack ruining a hikers spine/back& neck aches. Care to share what you feel about this?

I like these packs because of their hipbelt. Without it, I wouldn't like them. The hipbelt helps carry the load of the bag, which takes weight off of the shoulder strap. It really does make a huge difference. -Krik

Good video Krik, just got my Maxpedition, I like it, and as you did I saw the need for longer front buckle strap, can't believe that Maxpedition didn't do that longer so you can have more volume under the main flap.

You mentioned wanting to add length to the main buckle strap... All you need is a set of compatible plastic clips and some webbing material. Just make an extension and clip it on/off as your needs dictate. Quick, cheap, easy, and no pertinent mods needed :)

You might want to slow down and choose your words for proper usage. One example when discussing the side pockets of each bag, opposite of the water bottle holder, you state words to the effect that both bags have two zippers, when actually each pocket is equipped with two ZIPPER PULLS. Another example, when discussing the inside of each bags front pocket under the flap, you state that each bag pocket has two flaps on each side, or words to that effect which can be construed as each bag having FOUR slash pockets instead of two.
Also, when trying to show the side opposite the water bottle holder, you kept picking up and setting down the Maxpedition bag, as if it was a hot potato or something.
After about the third or fourth bounce you SHOULD have realized NEITHER bag was going to stand upright by itself and STOP bouncing them around. You prevented ANY chance of your viewers from actually SEEING what you were describing (the outer pocket dimensions) due to the "earthquake shot" and the bag in constant motion.
Sorry if you feel I'm being unkind or overly critical but as a consumer looking for information on a particular item, trying to glean any USEFUL information from a video with such glaring inconsistencies and inaccurate details could certainly turn a viewer OFF about buying an item you are reviewing.
So take the time to record your review then sit down with a friend or two and also view and REview and EDIT your efforts BEFORE releasing it to the public.
Good Luck in your future endeavors.
Oh, and BTW, I have one of those Maxpedition bags myself. I bought it to replace a Brand-X bag that I had for YEARS but which was becoming thread bare and places that had pockets sewed together where coming apart and holes were showing up. I sure as HELL didn't want to start losing my gear because I was top cheap to buy a replacement EDC bag.
Great gear made by Maxpedition, even if it IS assembled in China.

Thank you for doing this. The review really helped me choose the Maxpedition and I have now owned the Versapack for about a month and I'm very happy with it. Nothing wrong with the Vanquest and I'm likely to buy one of their other products in the future but the Maxpedition was right for my current daily requirements. The review is well paced and draws comparisons between the two products very well. Cheers.

Possibly the worst review I've ever seen of the 2. There is a huge difference of the 2. The material, wear ability, reliability, ect. Vanquest shames Maxepdition. Vanquest many times showed Maxpedition up in this video and you played it down, all other UA-cam channels have not. We know who is paying you....

IDK who makes bags like those but bigger, for pathfinder, I carry a 1/2 gallon insulated bottle in the pouch, it's main compartment will hold either one of those bags, for less money. Go through self-reliance Outfitters, Dave Canterbury, family . Cheaper than eBay or Amazon

great video and conparison as usual. Ive been looking into versipacks. I've been going all rustic style using a Best Made Ditty Bag, but a single rope on the shoulder really does wear against my collarbone. Unfortunately, style doesnt make for comfort! I think i'll look into a Maxpedition.

Don't know if you heard this before but Vanquest's R&D director was Maxpedition's original founder & co-owner. A few others worked at Maxpedition also joined Vanquest. If that's true, I guess that explains why their stuff look similar yet more refined. Love your channel by the way.

I have the Maxpedition E.D.C. version of this bag and use it on a daily basis as a lunch box/edc to go to work. The only thing I think is missing from it would be the drawcord/main compartment closure. But hey, it's about 30$ cheaper than the the model you showed. I can live with that for the usage I make of it. I also have the Colossus which I use as a camera/recording equipment bag, it's padded and I feel secure carrying fragile items in it, but as an edc... its missing the water bottle carrier. Cheers guys, great work as always!

  • @IamNemoN01

To secure your bottle on the Mobius you can stretch the shock cord over the top of the bottle. That will be enough to keep the bottle from falling out. I have to do the same thing with my Mountainsmith lumbar pack.

  • @okcjoesos
    @okcjoesos 7 років тому

These two bags were my final choices for an edc bag and really, you won't make a bad choice with either one. The reason I chose the Vanquest over Maxpedition was because of the situation that may arise that I would want or need to switch and carry it over the opposite shoulder, the Möbius is ambidextrous while the Jumbo is right or left carry only. Either way there both great.
    I enjoyed your video.

I own several bags from both companies and love them all. They are both very well built and will last. However I will say two things.
    1. the Vanquest products have more attention to detail, such as stitching is always straight and webbing is on straight. I get a lot maxpedition products that webbing and stitching is all over the place very crooked. Sometimes so crooked I can't get my fast clips in the webbing because they are so off center. I have never had this once with Vanquest.
    2. In my opinion the Vanquest is a better product hands down. The material is stronger and more pliable and the features are more thought out. In a life or death situation if I had to choose one of my packs I would choose my Vanquest.
Again I own many products from both companies and love them all but trust me from experience the Vanquest is a much better product.
