Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack • Field Review

- Krik of Black Owl Outdoors reviews the Jumbo Versipack from Maxpedition. This a right side carry Versipack, ideal from a strong side draw for right hand shooters. Like the rest of Maxpedition's gear, the Versipack lines are rugged outdoor gear built with rugged materials and top-notch design. The main compartment of the Jumbo Versipack is roughly 3 liters and can easily fit an on-canister stove as well as fuel cell, cook pot, camera and GSI cup with room to spare. Being in the Versipack series of lines, the Jumbo is worn over the left shoulder and secured with a 1/2" waistband which prevents the bag from flopping around and also places some of the weight on your waist, creating a more comfortable carry. If you are looking for a small bag to carry a Guyot or Nalgene water bottle and some extra gear, the Maxpedition Jumbo Versipack is perfect for just that. It also works well if you plan on riding a bike, as it can be slung around the back and worn there.
The color of the pack in this video is the khaki/foliage combination.

Dude thank you so much for showing a review of you wearing it.. I have seen so many videos of people with a camera pointed at the bag and digging through it.. I don't care what kind of toothpaste you like to carry just show how it looks!
Nicely done, a thoughtful and practical review. Refreshing to see someone who actually gets outside into the field do a review on equipment. Thank you for taking the time.
Awesome video! I don't see people reviewing how they wear the item and its usefulness in that position very often. Subbed
Nice review. It was good to see the bag on you and gain some perspective rather than see it just sat on a bench or something. I also liked that you talked about the bag and not the stuff you carry in it. All good stuff, thanks for sharing man.
Be safe and be lucky, Wol.
Krik, great review. Wearing it and explaining the function of actually moving through the woods with it was an excellent approach. Other reviews, even by some seasoned outdoors people lacked that entire issue. Keeping it light, etc. was also a sensible suggestion. You're right, no one wants to carry anything as it is.
I echo the previous accolades for "Best Video", by far and away. You hit on all the points I was wondering about, i.e. how does it sit on your body, what does it actually look like in use, how does it feel, etc. There are endless "reviews" of someone sitting the bag on a table and endlessly going through opening and closing all the pockets, most of them trying to do it one handed. You have definitely hit the mark!! Subscribed.
Good to hear! I actaully just bought the ultralite equinox nylon tarp off amazon. Gonna give that a try. I'll probably do a review on my channel once I get it up and running (sorry not trying to give myself a shamless plug) haha. Can't wait for the warmer weather! -Woody
Thanks for the great review. Pictures don't do it justice, video was what I needed to make a decision.
I agree, plenty of times when you want to pack light and just wonder through the woods. Great pack.
Very professional and thorough review of gear. Wish all reviews were this good
Thank you for showing us how you use this bag.
I've had the exact same bag for just over 2 years now and I love it! I keep it in my truck at all times as my EDC bag.
Thanks for the clear demo. I'm right-handed and was leaning towards the S-Type (left side) because because of a bad knee; I live on 3rd floor of my apartment building and I need to keep my right hand on the rail when climbing or descending stairs. For in bag carry, the s-type would impede access to a right handed person, besides that I don't believe the s-type is being manufactured anymore; if you're lucky enough to find one used on places like ebay, you have to pay a premium for a used due to the limited supply available out there. Your video now has me leaning towards purchasing a "new" right side vs actually paying more for "used" s-type. Thanks!
I agree with you man. Maxpedition is really putting out high quality products. Not the cheapest. BUT, if you know you like the set up and style, it should last you a lifetime. -Krik
I've had one of these bags for a few years and I love it. The only criticism is that it can be uncomfortable if you overload it. I use it for my main work gear bag. It is as tough as old boots, after three years of bouncing around in my truck it still looks as good as new.
Krik I'm loving the videos.
Stu from the UK
Thank you for a good review. Your video are mainly the reason I bought a Jumbo Versipack. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for the great review Krik. I found your review very useful in coming to a final decision. When I saw the Jumbo Versipack in the colour that you reviewed, I knew that was the colour that I wanted. What was confusing though was the fact that the Jumbo Versipack colour you described as Khaki-Foliage looked very different to the same colour pack on the Maxpedition website. Different lighting conditions etc can all have a big impact so I did some more research. I finally went with the Foliage pack which arrived today. Very happy. In conclusion, I believe that the Jumbo Versipack that you reviewed was also Foliage. Thank you again for the most useful review I have found…
Excellent review!!!! SOLD, just bought one. Thank you for a very well thought out review!!
Very good review! thanks for all the info, everything i was questioning was answered and it was also nice to see the product on someone instead of alone for a change. Thanks! I will definitely be buying one of these!
I've seen other reviews of the other maxpedition gear but this is my first view of the Jumbo. Very well done review, I'm gonna have to pick one up now.
Thanks!
I've been rocking the S-Type as a right hander for... I guess 6 years now. LOVE the Jumbo Versipack. I'm gonna pick up the right handed carry and try to rock two of them at a time, just to see what it'd be like in the woods.
Glad you liked video. Thanks for subscribing as well. Are you looking to get the versipack? If so, let me know how you like it. I'm still a huge fan of it. -Krik
I would love to see a comparison and contrast with the exact same gear to the mountainsmith tour.
Just ordered one today. Really pumped. Love the khaki/foliage combo. Can't wait to test it out.
Good review , will buy one , now .
Excellent job on the review and the camera work was great. Shot like a pro.
I picked a Jumbo up a few months ago after watching your review and it is great. I use it for my EDC and I'm in & out of that bag all day. One thing I would like to see them change (and it is minor) would be to stiffen the main flap where the buckle is at. The edges kinda fold over, not bad but it could use a plastic liner. I put a plastic bowl cleaner, just a curved piece of flat plastic, in that pocket but it isn't perfect.
Still, I love it enough to consider getting one for my right side and double them up for long days. Like you, I like to wear it on my lower back/side.
It is pretty much awesome.
I have a right hand version, but carry it on my left because I keep my coffee in the bottle holder and I want priority access to that. When accessing the rest of the bag I just swing it round to the front and get access to everything anyway. It's a good bag, been my edc for over a year now.
Haha you're welcome. And thank you for watching. I really like this pack. The hip belt makes ALL the difference, to me at least. -Krik
Great review. Love your videos. I have this exact same bag and it's fantastic. Use as a day hike/range bag and it's just perfect. Super rugged and sturdy. Haven't found a bag with compatible quality, durability, and innovative features. Maxpedition is worth every penny.
Are you familiar with Vanquest? -Krik
Well said and a great review 👏 👌 👍 😊
The S type is for left handed folks. If your left hand is your dominate hand, you'd probably want to get an S type. Does that makes sense? Thanks for watching. -Krik
Great review, thanks!
Thanks for subscribing! And thank you for the kind words. We are constantly trying to improve on each video. -Krik
Believe it or not, the UTG bag is actually really well made. It's 1680 denier polyester (the same as the UTG gun cases) and does a fine job at resisting water and repelling stains. I bought mine for about $35 and have used it for about a year without an issue. I kind of feel bad since the design is a direct Mexpedition ripoff, but it's not a bad alternative for somebody who's short on cash (like I was when I bought mine.)
Just ordered mine in khaki. I may get one or two more in different colors. Great video. Very useful.
Thank you very much for your encouraging words. Before we make each video, we ask ourselves what would we want to see in a video review. I'm glad you enjoyed the video. And thanks for subscribing. -Krik
Good video . Thank you for your info. Greetings from Slovakia
I wanted to buy condor edc bag cause of price, but I bought maxpedition wallet and I'm amazed of quality. You can't see it in reviews, you must grab that stuff :D
Nice video, very good quality!
UTG makes the same bag basically and to be honest its awesome! I use it for Edc and have been for 6 months. It costs about half the price.
Absolutely, the bag will stay in place because of the hip belt. Without the hip belt, I would not praise this bag as I have done. Thanks for watching and stay safe on your bike. -Krik
Nice review..just ordered one
Awesome video!! Just went and bought the same bag for hiking and ccw. Keep up the good work!
Right on, great review. Very practical
Nice job on the video! Got one of those on my wishlist!
amazing video!!!
amazing pack!!!
stay strong..
😎
Yea I really love this type of pack. And I can see why it would be uncomfortable if it were overloaded. It's meant to be light. Thanks for the comment Stu. -Krik
great review, thanks for sharing
Great review, many thanks.
great for bike riding too
Thank you for this review.
I never held or saw the sumo. But I checked out a video on it. I think it would be pushing the limits of the bag's storage capacity. -Krik
Very nice review! Thanks.
After my knockoff versipak tore, I'm definitely gonna get the real deal now. Good video too, I was a little confused about left or right carry, I'll look again, but think some sites are calling he bag u reviewed an s type.
Fantastic review. Very informative.
I have the jumbo like in the Vid and I have the larger mongo versipack.. I don't hike all the time. I use the jumbo versipack for my urban everyday carry: first aid, water, pistol and extra mags, multi tool,meds,Ect...
Exactly the same? I looked at the UTG bag. Are you certain it's the same exact bag? It's made out of 1050? I couldn't find the specs online. But either way thanks for the info. -Krik
Very good review
Why is the back owl logo a penguin?
Thanks, really informative :)
These bags are fantastic. Just wondering, what kind of button up shirt is that. I want one 💪
Excellent
GOOD REVIEW!
great review
great review .. subbed ... just ordered the black/foilage
Are you still liking the ENO hammock?? I just bought one the other day! Can't wait to try it out
“This bag has a concealed compartment”
-World: great place to conceal my wallet
-Americans: great place to conceal my gun
That pocket has a loop side of a hook and loop panel, to fit holsters and mag holders. But yeah, a wallet would fit too, I keep gloves in there.
Very well done vid and informative. I agree with jasic82. Just subscribed and have made my mind up about this bag for E.D.C Thanks to your review.
Thanks Troy. We try to make the videos that we would want to watch, you know? -Krik
Best review of this pack out there. Nice job! What's your thoughts on the new Maxpedition AGR version of this pack? Will you please do a comparison if you have the opportunity? ....... Subscribed!
I believe that maybe its a bit small for a 2-3day pack, right? Maybe you can do a review on the Mongo Versipack as an alternative? Thanks a million. Just discovered your channel today and I am completely sold. Great stuff indeed. All the best.
Yes, absolutely. I wouldn't even consider taking this out for 2-3 days. Do you consider yourself a minimalist? -Krik
BlackOwlOutdoors Hi Krik, and thanks for answering... Not really a minimalist, but really like the idea of going out without too much of a hassle. That is why the versipacks catch my attention I guess. A good list of what I would probably take is something like stated in Paul Kirtley's blog as a basic kit frontierbushcraft.com/2012/07/06/bushcraft-on-a-budget-kit/ Thanks! (Really looking forward for the Mongo Review)
The Versipack is just too small, in my opinion, for that many nights. I wouldn't even know how you'd carry a sleeping bag. In that blog, he's using a backpack which allows him to strap his sleeping mat to. And overall, it has much more volume to pack the kit. As I said before, it comes down to comfort. You can walk into the woods with nothing and spend 2 nights (extreme example). Or you can walk in for 2 nights with 60 pounds of gear. You know? Judging by the photo, the rucksack he is using is probably about 30 litres in volume.
BlackOwlOutdoors Yeah, I agree. I guess that a 1900-2000ci. (30-32L) is what would work best. I know that you aren't too fan of overloading slingpacks but maybe the Javelin VSlinger can do a better job? (can't really find it's capacity anywhere) If not I would look for a regular 30-32L... Any recommendations?
Looks like it might be a good bail out bag.
Sweet man. Let me know your impressions after you try it out. -Krik
Have the same pack. It's very versatile and despite it's size, not at all cumbersome.
Iam sold... It just needs a place 4 a tomahawk or hatchet. Nice vid
Yes, I'm sold on it as well, and yes it would be better if it had a slot of loop to attach or place a tomahawk or hatchet in. Good video.
Have you found that your shoulder gets sore during a long hike v.s having a traditional double strap back pack? Great review btw.
Great videos, appreciate the hard work and and clarity.
So the question is?
Vanquest Mobious or Maxpedition jumbo?
I'm planning on buying one real soon. My only complaint with vanquest is their ridiculous shipping charges.
Thanks!
Id go with the jumbo
Just checked its called the UTG tactical messenger bag
It's a little small, but you can really fine tune it. It works great for mild weather. But when it's cold I carry much more gear. What do you think? -Krik
Hello, good vid, thanks for sharing. i'm looking for getting this tactical bag, could you help to identify what color is the one you show on the video ? is that the foliage green or khaki one ? thanks in advance.
i am not a turtle, i am a whopping great dog THANKYOU!!!!!!
Every time he says that I feel like he's calling viewers slow. LOL
What about the Maxpedition S-Type Jumbo Versipack
Will the pack stay at your back and not slide back to the side as you had shown you liked to wear it? I'm wanting to get one to use as an EDC bag for motorcycle touring that will just cary my phone. wallet, some snacks, my flashlight and knife, you know just my stuff. .. So would it stay at my back and not shift whilst riding?
Heck yea I still like my hammock. It's almost warm hammock weather. It will be seeing much more use. Let me know how you like the hammock. Do you have a tarp for it? -Krik
Did you get to try the new Wolfspur shoulder bag?
The woods in the USA look good., Deserted
Well I will have to check out your review once you put it up. Hey man don't worry about 'shameless' plugs here. We are trying to build and share with everyone. There's plenty to go around. Right? Ha. -Krik
Just curious to know the size of your main pot that housed your cook kit.
Obviously very small for a 2-3day... :P But an overnighter? Thanks!
That really depends on so many variables. But it could be done if the conditions were right. And it really comes down to your comfort level. What do you need to stay comfortable? It's different for everyone. Hope that helps. -Krik
Does anyone else have a problem with the main compartment drawstring not closing properly? The string won't go through the grommet right and I cant't tighten the drawstring!
What camera do you use for your reviews? Also, i own this same pack made by a different company (I cant remember the name off the top of my head) but it cost me only 20 bucks. And it is EXACTLY the same, I have a video of it on my channel.
What kind of binoculars was that?
Would Thinkpad x230 fit?
Can you pack a Jetboil Sumo in there?
What shirt is that? It's really nice.
jfdhgds I think I bought it at Cabelas. -Krik
could the fatboy be worn as a waitpack by using the shoulder strap as a waistbelt instead?
I want one of these but I really have no need for it. I'm gonna have to take up hiking so I can justify buying the pack.
Good idea 👍
Is there a smaller version of this pack out there somewhere? i would like to get this to carry my edc during summer periods, when i obviously wear lighter clothes and there is not enough room for my stuff; i looked at the jumbo and it seems like a good pack, and I could use the fact that it has the outside water bottle compartment, the problem is, it's too big, i don't want to carry a full 1lt (40 ounces) klean kanteen because that would be too heavy, it's not a survival bag at the end of the day... so i was wondering if anyone knows of a similar pack but smaller (not necessarely by maxpedition). any advice will be apreciated :)
Go to the maxpedition site, they have smaller ones and on sale too.
Rob Okray
thanks :) I went for the Jumbo LEO version, i can stick the small water bottle (a smaller klean kanteen, 16oz into the AR Mag pouch and the main pocket is very orgnized too.
I believe that the smaller version is, ironically enough, called the "Fatboy".
i just really wish i could see how this fits on women, but for some reason only men seem to do reviews on it
Gina G What concerns do you have with the pack? -Krik
all the pictures i have seen, the bag is a lot lower down to accommodate a women's chest, but now with the waist strap you'd have to wear it higher...
Aracelio Colon
yeah, i saw that video! she has the older one though without the waist belt that this one has :( thanks for your help though :)
VOCE PODERIA COLOCAR LEGENDAS EM PORTUGUES,NO BRAZIL MUITAS PESSOAS CURTEM SEUS VÍDEOS. ABRAÇOS
Could you do a comparison to the fatboy?
At this moment, we don't own a Fatboy. But if we do get one, there will be a comparison video. Do you have any questions about this pack in particular? Thanks for watching. -Krik
i was just trying to figure out the differences between the two
