Imagine being so badass, you get a Sabaton song about your life. This woman deserves all the recognition. I am glad to finally hear of her. Fantastic work Sabaton
@@acomputer3559 That was during World War 2. She was invited to some banquet with german generals and when she refused she was put in a concentration camp for ten months.
As a History buff, I am extremely disappointed in myself for not knowing who this amazing person was, I hope this song gives her the recognition she deserves.
I was thinking of making a new character in FF14 to make play through the story again and was contemplating her name and class. I’m thinking of naming her Milunka Savic as a Paladin or Warrior.
In case you haven't found out by reading other comments, her name was Milunka Savić, she was a Serbian peasant girl who enlisted in the Serbian army by pretending to be a boy. There are many stories of her courage, bravery and mischief!
I consider myself a history buff and am incredibly disappointed in myself for never hearing of this incredible woman. RIP Milunka Savić and thank you Sabaton for another amazing song!
If she accepted French medals and everything she would be more famous, but she rejected everything and stayed in Serbia because this is her country. That's real hero. Reject better life because you love your people and your country. Too bad not many people like her.
It's not something Western media would tell you on daily basis, because you know, they want you to think that Serbs are savages. And they are good at it, because you are consuming that shit fast af
read some about Milunka Savic. after the war she became a poor cleaning lady for the rest of her life. she was also forgotten by most historians in her lifetime. only after her death she started to get the respect she earned. sad. but as poor as she was, she did put through school more than 20 children, so it cant be too bad. she truly had a philanthropic heart.
She was offered foreign pensions, but she refused and stayed in Serbia. We can thank the stinky communists for her dissaperance during that time, since here in Serbia at that time, when Yugoslavia was formed, there were no separations in the name of "unity and brotherhood", therefore anyhing and everything that Serbs achieved, wouldn't be celebrated, so that our neighbours wouldn't envy us.
Add her name please. ~Milunka Savic~ We also have a Lady warrior in Romania: Ecaterina Teodoroiu (1915-1916 I know is first ww, still she also followed his brother's death). She died bravely in the battlefield! Dumnezeu să o odihnească în pace și să o ierte. Amin.
Um yes but actually no. She also wanted to join army anyways, but cuz she was woman, she couldn't join Serbian army. That's why she cut her hair and she dressed like man. When she got injured in a battle, nurse saw that she is female.
In our country in serbia, it is rare that a singer sings about his history, ancestors ... there are really few. I believe I will teach my children to listen to the Sabaton. Thanks!!!
They don't? I mean, as far as singing about the deeds of one's ancestors, it doesn't really get more direct than songs like "My Father is a War Criminal." It's actually kinda catchy, though I probably only think that because I don't understand the lyrics...
Im a Croat but used to date a girl who went to orhodox highschool in Zagreb, she sang in a choir so I heard a lot of old Serbian folk songs about Ottoman invasions, unfortunately dont remember the names since that was like 10 years ago. I think you just dont have many "modern" songs about historical achievements.
So... she's a real-life, Eastern-European, badass modern Mulan? How is this the first time I've heard about her? What the hell?! Mad respect to Sabaton for once again educating the public about the *important* parts of history that modern schools somehow "conveniently" leave out. RIP Milunka Savić - You deserve more recognition than you got, and I hope someday in the future your name will become as well-known as the likes of Simo Häyhä or Vladimir Vazov.
No! Mulan is a cartoon. This woman lived and breathed. Fought and brought honour to her and her comrades. Please don't belittle her by comparing to fictional garbage. Thank you.
given the fact the western world doesn't care for russian units very much im not surprised you didnt know russia fielded units with female soldiers, even then some resistance groups had female members as well so while she is more important to people who care to learn you also just disrespected resistance units who had women
on second look she is not from the era i was thinking of, my point however stands, a better example wouldve been jane of ark or jone of ark i cant exactly remember the spelling of her name but i think you know who im talking about
Milunka Savić was a Serbian war heroine who fought in the Balkan Wars and in World War I. She is the most-decorated female combatant in the recorded history of warfare. In 1912, her brother received call-up papers for mobilization for the First Balkan War. She chose to go in his place-cutting her hair and donning men's clothes and joining the Serbian army. She quickly saw combat and received her first medal and was promoted to corporal in the Battle of Bregalnica. Engaged in battle, she sustained wounds and it was only then, when recovering from her injuries in hospital, that her true sex was revealed, much to the surprise of the attending physicians. Savic was called before her commanding officer. They didn't want to punish her, because she had proven a valuable and highly competent soldier. The military deployment that had resulted in her sex being revealed had been her tenth. But neither was it suitable for a young woman to be in combat. She was offered a transfer to the Nursing division. Savic stood at attention and insisted she only wanted to fight for her country as a combatant. The officer said he'd think it over and give her his answer the next day. Still standing at attention, Savic responded, "I will wait." It is said he only made her stand an hour before agreeing to send her back to the infantry. In 1914, in the early days of World War I, Savić was awarded her first Karađorđe Star with Swords after the Battle of Kolubara. She received her second Karađorđe Star (with Swords) after the Battle of the Crna Bend in 1916 when she captured 23 Bulgarian soldiers single-handedly. She was awarded the French Légion d’Honneur (Legion of Honour) twice, as well as the Russian Cross of St. George, the British medal of the Most Distinguished Order of St Michael, and the Serbian Miloš Obilić medal. She was the sole female recipient of the French Croix de Guerre 1914-1918 with the gold palm attribute for service in World War I.

Sabaton always surprise me, by making songs about something /someone , I've never learnt in school. Sabaton is truly the best history teacher we've got.
"We sang when it was hardest for us. We sang when French ships transferred us from Albania to Corfu, and we were living corpses. French sailors and officers cried listening to us, and said: "What a wonderful people!". We sang while we were dying on the island of Corfu and Vid, we sang while we were dying on the Thessaloniki front. When we sang in the trenches, the Bulgarians would stop firing. That is why we are a nation that will never fail. Serbian soldiers loved me, respected me, and they were afraid of me. Maybe that's why none of my comrades-in-arms proposed to me. They probably thought that Milunka, so dangerous in the fight, would be a bomber in marriage. " Milunka Savić

Pop history has, sadly, oversimplified things too much in many areas. And considering the breadth of human history you can't even blame schools for having to truncate it down, but sadly it leaves far too many assuming that things were ironclad and universal. So, if you wanted to write a movie about it, you'd probably get a big "Uh-huh, sure, a woman fighting in the trenches in WWI... yeah, BS." wheras with Wonder Woman it's explicitly (superhero) fantasy so on paper Suspension of Disbelief works, whereas with Miss Savic it's real and also does not match the average person's knowledge of what happened. And to be honest, even the stuff that is within the 'popular consensus' gets vastly oversimplified and genericized to the point where it's not even the most interesting parts of it.
Well yes but she wasnt this whole soft person or a pacifist. She went to war so her brother wouldnt, she dressed as a man and wore belts to "secure her breasts" so she wouldnt stand out. She was respected amongst her male counterparts and she even joked about it where she wondered why none of them asked her to marry her, she said perhaps they were scared lmao. The sad part is she worked as a cleaner in a bank after the war...
@@jebosamvasjako Well... If photos of her person aren't fake, then I am not surprised not many people wanted to marry her. Well, maybe that's why firstly they didn't know she was a woman in the first place, until her first wound, when they found out about her sex. TL: DR, on photos she looks like a young man.

It reminds me of a heroine also from my country, Brazil, called Maria Quitéria de Jesus, she was the first woman to enter the armed forces in 1822 against the Portuguese, using her brother-in-law's name and pretending to be a man, her identity was revealed, but Major Silva e Castro did not allow her to leave the troops because of her facility with weapons handling and discipline in battle, Maria Quitéria had no schooling, but was experienced in hunting and fishing, as well as in the management of weapons. Unlike the girls of her time, she was independent and contradicted society's standards. After adopting her real name, Maria Quitéria changed her male uniform for skirts and accessories. Her courage in joining a male environment caught the attention of other women, who joined the troops and formed a group commanded by Quitéria. With the defeat of the Portuguese troops, in July 1823, Maria Quitéria was promoted to cadet and recognized as a heroine of Independence. Dom Pedro I gave her the title of “Knight of the Imperial Order of the Cruzeiro”.

At that time, the Kingdom of Serbia was one of the few countries that allowed women to take part in war conflicts. Milunka Savic was not the only woman, but she was the most decorated. Many women from Great Britain came to Serbia at that time, mostly to be nurses, and some of them became soldiers. One of them is the famous Flora Sandes, who started as a nurse and later became an officer in the Serbian army during the Great War. She was awarded seven medals.
Well this is kind of true. Serbian army didn't let them fight, at least not amidietly. Well damn, total angel of war right there.
She had one biological daughter and adopted 3 daughters more. Also she schooled at least 30 more children.

As a History buff, I am extremely disappointed in myself for not knowing who this amazing person was, I hope this song gives her the recognition she deserves.
It's definitely never too late to find out 😉
I was thinking of making a new character in FF14 to make play through the story again and was contemplating her name and class.

@@mellotron_scratch yeah, he was Serbian too. Him and Edward Black are tied for youngest. Though Edward was in the American Civil War
If she accepted French medals and everything she would be more famous, but she rejected everything and stayed in Serbia because this is her country. That's real hero. Reject better life because you love your people and your country. Too bad not many people like her.
She is not only one lady in Serbian uniform in WW1.
Chek for Sofija Jovanović, Flora Sends.
Turns out this soldier is the single most decorated female soldier in History. And this is literally the first time I’ve heard about her.
My thoughts exactly
Yup, Milunka Savić 💚
This is what Sabaton are stupidly good at though - giving unsung heroes their deserved time in the spotlight

after the war she became a poor cleaning lady for the rest of her life. she was also forgotten by most historians in her lifetime. only after her death she started to get the respect she earned.
sad. but as poor as she was, she did put through school more than 20 children, so it cant be too bad. she truly had a philanthropic heart.

We also have a Lady warrior in Romania: Ecaterina Teodoroiu (1915-1916 I know is first ww, still she also followed his brother's death). She died bravely in the battlefield! Dumnezeu să o odihnească în pace și să o ierte. Amin.

They have other songs about Serbia as well! Check out “Last Dying Breath” about the defense of Belgrade in WW1!
They don't? I mean, as far as singing about the deeds of one's ancestors, it doesn't really get more direct than songs like "My Father is a War Criminal."

So... she's a real-life, Eastern-European, badass modern Mulan?
How is this the first time I've heard about her? What the hell?!
Mad respect to Sabaton for once again educating the public about the *important* parts of history that modern schools somehow "conveniently" leave out.

She's honestly a hero, and I feel if schools taught about her, young girls would have an actual role model to look up to, instead of people like Kim Kardashian, who do more harm than good to young girls.
@@rhysandmike3373 The thing is, younger gens (so, my generation) tends to look at the rich and famous, who MOST of the times did nothing but gossip and trash talk until famous (some actually deserve respect, like robert downey jr, who did a complete 180 in his life), instead of looking up to heros, not just war heros, but their families, who have been working hard for generations just to have a stable country. Unfortunatly most of us that know history to a certain degree, know that the past is bound to happen again, just like whats happening right now between russia and ukraine, and instead of looking up to heros that sacrificed their life to the country, we look up to whoever's trending (just saying "we" doesnt necessarily mean you or me, but the newer generations)

It turned out to be quite massive with all the research and not really knowing what information was correct on the foreign sites, there were many to compare with each other 😅 but how much i learned was worth all the time spent on the project.
Thank you guys for making history so got damn interesting and emotional, there is so much more to it than what we learned in Elementary school. 🇸🇪
Proud to be a Serb, thank you Sabaton for making this song. I hope there will be another concert in Serbia soon
Thank you so much for making songs about the not well known history that deserves the spotlight, much love from Serbia!!!!
Sofija Jovanović, prva žena pripadnik specijalne jedinice.
Well this is kind of true. Serbian army didn't let them fight, at least not amidietly. All of those women were volunters, and some of them (including Milunka) were rejected at first, but joined later on behalf of senior army oficers. Serbian royal army never had fully women units, but only few women volunters, but they were very, very good fighters.
@@kolibridunavski6389 Well not really.... Četnici were reimagined as an Spec Ops Unit in the inter war period.... As for Sofija Jovanović, if I am remembering corectly, she served in the Sremski Volonteer Battalion and was one of its best soldiers... I think she was also prior service during the both Balkan Wars....

Aside for being most decorated female soldier in history she raised 2 orphan girls by one of her own and one of her cousins. After the war she was homeless. For 15 years she worked most menial jobs. She refused proposal of French government to move to France and receive French military pension. Instead in Yugoslavia she lived poorly and proudly. Through her household in years before WW2 she raised 30 children providing for them and their education. Just to put in full context what philanthropic really means in this song.
Interesting fact about Lady of the Dark - after war she adopted 3 daughters, in the end she had 4 kids and was a single mother.
And she was never really remember as a hero did live a life she deserved. Onlye taken out for "honors" so politics could ride here heroic past.
I did a google on this lady; and that does explain the line " . . . with a philanthropic heart."
Dude, she raised over 30 children, adopted. She had 2 daughters of her own. Source: my mother in law, who lived next door to Milunka as a child. She was a strict but just mother, just like the soldier she was. A shame how she was treated later on in life by the country she protected...

Serbs have bad name?
@@jackstod thanks to western media and money, yea
@@jackstod In Europe yes. They had really bloody and brutal civil war. After the war many of the men went to work abroad and well, brutalized by war they caused problems. It's kind of what happened when finns went to work in sweden and Norway after war but in a much larger scale.
@@jackstod Yeah, Serbs are to this day considered Genocidal and are very often joked about across Europe and in Americas. Many news that come out of Serbia are often completely altered from what they are (Im pretty sure that when there were protests in Serbia in 2020, it was because of the elections and whatelse, but Western media set it up as corruption and cruelty if im sure?)
Wait, Serbs are people? Like everyone else!? Welcome then, brothers and sisters!
Seriously, much love to you all. Continue to be awesome people!
"Girls are not equal to men, are weak"
Milunka Savic: "Hold my beer" 🔥🔥
This is not about weakness or strength. This is about bravery of one girl in order to protect his sick brother from going to war. Men will always be stronger than girls and despite that she was brave enough to head into the war being at disadvantage, surrounded by men.
Serbien people are bravest and proudest nation. Proud to be Serb
Yeah, you really beat kosovo so bravely. And this nationalist bullsh1t seriously gets a thumbs up from sabaton. Take inspiration from Milunka Sevic, from a person. Not a state with a dark history.
As a man of Prussian descent, I know Serbia was invaded twice: 1915 and 1941. However, I admire the Serbs. August Von Mackensen: "You are not going to the Italian, French or Russian front... the Serbs are a tough, sharp, dangerous and proud people who kiss their Fatherland". From Serbia, to Albania to Greece they fought like lions.
Serbia (than still formar Yugoslavia) forses were in defense war, in 1991 -1995.
-1999 NATO started agression in Serbia ,in two mounts distroing it from the air.
Unfortunately, Serbia history of war is very similar to Israel, or Ireland, for example.
The history of those conflicts are very old & very hard to define and understand.
However,...I hope those days are left behind!
@@marijamanic4095 I know of the 1990s, my wife has Balkan ancestry (Croat-Serb). No hate intended. I am talking about WW1 Milunka. Respect the Serbians, from a Prussian

Cool that
Was waiting for this so much. After reading her story once I saw the list of songs for the album, I was so surprised about how unknown she seemingly is over here because her deeds are the real deal. I'm glad she gets honored and her story told to so many new people now.
Ah, the Iron Squadron, THE unstoppable force of Serbian army in 3 wars... Enemy gave them that nickname after they relieved position in retreat, stopped enemy advance and then in counter attack obliterated attacking troops, capturing their command staff and artillery pieces. Toughest and most stubborn of Serbs. Most decorations by far and countless deeds of bravery. And yet when they were asked by their commander who amongst them is worthy of greatest medal, they all as one said "Milunka Savic". Now, that was recognition of a great warrior...

Respect and eternal glory to the Serb hero Milunka Savić, the most decorated woman in the history of warfare! She is famous for saving enemy lives during the hardest battles her elite "Iron regiment" fought against them. Lady of the dark for example single handedly imprisonated 23 enemy soldiers. Highly skilled bomber and shooter. Combination of humanity, bravery, capability and patriotism made her a person who always did what was good, what was right completely disregarding her life in the process. Serbia bows to you, dear Milunka! Вечна ти слава и хвала, хероино српска! Живела Србија! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻❤❤❤🇷🇸🇷🇸🇷🇸
@GrownRocket5801 The last two sentences (those written in Cyrillic) mean: "Eternal glory and gratitude to you, Serbian heroine! Long live Serbia!"
Can't wait for Sabaton's history channel episode about Milunka! It's infuriating how little info about her is out there on the internet. I can't help but notice a lot of similarities between the story of Milunka Savić and Mulan from the 1998 animated disney movie, both of them disguised themselves as men to take the place of a male relative, and even after the truth was uncovered they were still able to prove they were more than qualified to fight alongside men in battle, and became legends of their respective countries.

Dear Sabaton,
In case you ever see this comment,
I’m really grateful for your music, and lyrics, your melodies make me feel so powerful as if i can overcome everything, and even more, as a Serbian girl i am grateful you understand our history and show such appreciation in your work.
For years you have been putting out excellent music and i hope i will be able to see you play live someday!
Thank you!

Milunka, you are not forgotten
Oh, man... You guys deserve a monument here in Serbia!
Nemoj leba ti da dižemo spomenik živim ljudima.
In the interwar years, Milunka Savić was practically forgotten, working part-time as a cleaner in Belgrade, raising several daughters alone after her husband left them. She was not paid a pension, and the only reward for her exploits was a plot of land near Novi Sad. This is how the homeland of Serbia pays its heroes.
@@JackSmith-ky8uo Wrong statement.
It is not how Serbia pays for its heroes, it is how communism forbids Serbia to pay its heroes. It is not the same. In communist Serbia, you could not praise any Serbian national hero. You didn't learn about those people in school. There were no movies, no monuments, etc. Only Serbs couldn't go freely to a church. Serbs were systematically cut into pieces. New nations were born in Serbian national bodies, that never existed before. If you look closer at the percentage of the victims of Goli Otok you will see that a huge amount were Serbs. Almost all. The biggest repressions were done to Serbs. After the German occupation, Serbs went to communist occupation. Today we are occupied by the USA. We need a fourth uprising.
