========= Soldier Of Heaven LYRICS ==========
I won’t be coming home
I won’t be going anywhere
I will guard this post forever
Here on the alpine slope where I did my final stand I shall remain
Among the ice and snow that binds me to this mountain
A force of nature too strong, sent from above
Where spirits lead the way, the winds will never fade
White Friday, I’ll take the
Stairway to heaven
I’m sky high, when I die
I’ll be immortal
Forever, I never
I won´t return to
Blood Mountain, I am the
Soldier of heaven
I saw the end of war
I watched the soldiers come and go
And I kept my watch forever
So many brave men fell in the battles that were raging down below
I have seen it all but none will hear my story
All of these years I have been frozen in time
I cried for spring to come but here, winter remain
I always dreamed that I would, serve high above
Where spirits lead the way, the winds will never fade
========= Historic Fact =============
High above in the alps close to heaven, in the most extreme circumstances, men fought and protected the borders during WWI. At 23:30 on April 17, 1916, the Italians, who were up against the Austro-Hungarian Empire, detonated 5,000kg of Nitro-Gelatine to secure the Col di Lana summit.

Love IT and all of your songs. Greetings from Finland.
I was super excited when this song dropped back in January, then was ecstatic when the full album dropped a couple weeks ago. and I can't wait to see yall later this year in Nashville❤
The great thing about being a Sabaton fan is that besides learning history, you know that all their songs are going to be really epic! It's a band full of culture and talent!
So true
It’s the only band I know with not a bad song on any of his albums
very true
Yes yes.
100% agree!
Some historical context: Aside from the Italian Alps front, this song is referencing 2 particular events. "White Friday" was a series of avalanches that caused the deaths of 10,000 soldiers from all sides when all was said and done. "Blood Mountain" was the nickname given to a multi-year long struggle for 1 mountain (Col di Lana) in which neither side had any clear winner. Its tragic that the front is not talked about as much as it should be considering how hard both sides fought in the region. Thank Sabaton for immortalizing and honoring those sacrifices in song.
Very underrated comment
The father of my maternal grandmother fought there, getting wounded and survived a gas attack, being discharged from the Regio Esercito in early 1919. He had PTSD (it didn't exist at the time) for all of his life
and it happened on a Wednesday lol
Thanks for information :)
Around 8,000 dead on Blood Mountain.
I lost my dad in 93' in the war for independence for Croatia, to this day his remains were never found among two thousand of other soldiers and people, and this song hits home and makes me tear up a bit, even though it has been a long time.
Your father is a true hero. I offer my sincerest condolences.
May your father rest in pece
Hey went the way most men wish they could, in defense of the things and people they care about most. Your father has my gratitude, and you have my condolences

My great grandfather fought for Finland during the winter-war. He never came home and his body was never recovered. It's just so horrible that he didn't get a real funeral. All I know is that his final resting place is somewhere out in the finnish woods. I also know that he is still till this day guarding his post in those same woods. Rest in peace great grandfather Birger Nylund, in my heart you truly are the soldier of heaven. My hero! Salute!❤️🇫🇮👋

May he find peace.
As a Norwegian Solider that has guarded my post in wind and snow with the sky as my only companion. This song speaks to me. To fight in these conditions demands bravery, pride and motivation. These men gave it all in a unforgivable environment where every mistake might have been their last. I guard my post so others can rest peacefully and hopefully not rest on top of a mountain.

they are rock band not a paramedics
Hey they’re keeping his adrenaline levels high
For those who don't know: this song details the series of avalanches known as "white Friday". Starting at 5am on December 13, 1916. The first avalanche fell at 5am and buried an austrian position containing over 300 solders. Over 270 men were killed
Both sides also fired artillery at each other in an attempt to bury the other side.
Thx for telling the history behind the song. I know very little about WW1.
It talkes about the blood mountain too today known a "col di lana" (wool mountain) but was known as "col di sangue" (blood mountain) was a very contested hill between the austro-hungarians and italians, witnessed a serie of avalanches and atrocious fighting, the mountain was filled with mines too, to then be blown up by by all of those getting ignited
Dude, without Sabaton I do not think people will know about stories like this.
What about the fighters near the end? They don't look like 1916 war planes but more 1940's ME109.

I'm 66 years old and Sabaton is the fu**ing VERY BEST metal band I've ever hard in my life. And I don't think there might be another favourite in future.
"but none will hear my story", millions have now. To the forgotten soldier.
“I have seen it all but none will hear my story” damn, that line always gets me
Probably going into too much detail, but I find it amazing that you can read it as a) future tense: "will hear" but also b) "none will hear my story" as in "nobody wants to listen to my story".
@@notulaidoamne2 Not too much detail at all to find ambiguity in the lines. Your post is really good. When there is more than one meaning, and it clarifies or amplifies the meaning, then that's great writing! Audie Murphy did this with The Crosses Grow at Anzio, as in the number of crosses for the dead kept increasing, and also that the crosses seemed to be like flowers growing (maybe an allusion to the poppies at Flanders Field).
@@notulaidoamne2 Damn
Whats the difference? Im sorry but English isnt my native laungage

So unknow that, in a song about a 1916 episode, there are two german BF-109s from WW2. Go figure.
@@Ingulf_The_Mad I think that was the emphasis the being frozen in time, that they see the world continue on and advance, but they're forever frozen as they were
@@coltnorr4638 Maybe you are right. But I find also the presence of a red Fokker Dr. 1 quite a nonsense over the Alps. Usually their videos are very accurate historically, and since this celebrates a front that is rarely talked about, I would have preferred something more specifically inherent to the exploits of Austro-Hungarian and Italian soldiers. White Friday, as they say in the chorus, refers to an avalanche that killed many austro-hungarian soldiers in 1916. The same day, other avanches killed other soldiers, both austro-hungarian and italian. I think that this song is dedicated to these forgetten soldiers too. They fell in the field although not in combat and they're heroes like the others.

1:11 "I saw the end of war."
"Only the dead have seen the end of war."
That line hits hard.
As the great-grandson of Tyrolean Kaiserjäger this means so much to me. Plus, the fact that it was published on the day of the "Drei Könige / Befana" is particularly special. In Tyrol we speak 4 main languages, and my family has been divided on both sides of the Alps, so the message of peace is always so very important, whether you swear allegiance to the Empire or to the Republic. As we would say: "Nimmar Kriag! Bašta viera! Nicht mehr Krieg! Basta guerra!"
damn really? Nice! Hey, could you also tell me what exactly this song is about, I'm a bit confused at the moment...
@@TheAntarcticFed This song is dedicated to the Unknown Soldier, soldiers who were never found and presumed killed in action. No body to be brought home for a proper burial because it wasn’t ever recovered or there was nothing left of it to identify who the soldier was. This man died on the alps, very dangerous to retrieve bodies from atop a mountain and the ice and snow easily cover them up so they can never be found. The soldier now stands at his final post alone on top of that mountain forever. He watches as planes from ww1 fight overhead but later its planes from ww2, showing the passing of time

The thing I love about Sabaton is that they don't glorify these wars and battles. They're just trying to make sure that they and the lessons they have to teach us today aren't forgotten. In the end, Sabaton is just out to tell the fallen a simple message. Just three words, in fact:
We remember you.
So they are basicly valor bards

I'm a historical reenactor. Every Sabaton song leaves me with the gratitude that I never have to ever deal with the story of each song and makes me glad for the peace I live through. I am truly saddened and sympathetic for those who have died so that we may live in peace.

After learning of the backstory, it’s honestly enough to bring one to tears. So many young men, boys even, fighting trench warfare in some of the worst conditions imaginable, and for what? A mountain where nobody will ever live, where no resources can be extracted, where no value can be found outside of a slightly more advantageous position and moving a line on a political map. And when the Italians finally win on one mountain, thinking finally they can move on from this hell, they realize there are more mountains the Austro-Hungarians have dug into.
The CGI would have been too expensive, so they made a time machine and went back to the alps during world war 1 and played the song there
Exactly! 🤘
I've always described Sabton as "the metal version of Schoolhouse Rock" to people who don't know. And this song is another example of that statement. I listened to it this morning with no idea of the story. Learning the story of White Friday made me realize how powerful the song is. As every Sabaton song does for the story they are based on. Thank you, Sabaton. For everything you do to educate people in a way that is both fun and awesome. Keep making music, keep educating, and keep being absolutely awesome

My great grandfather was a Hauptmann (equivalent of capitan) in the slovenian homeguard regiments of the austro-hungarian hungarian army. He was present in 10 of 12 battles of Isonzo. When he returned home he burned his uniforn, insignia and medal. The only story he shared was of a battle when italian troops were attacking up a ridge under them and they were shooting down on them them like they were rabbits (his words). When they ran out of ammunition they started hurling rocks and boulders towards them and managed to repel the attack. He told his wife that no matter how much he prays his ticket to hell is already booked. Italian lads had the "luxury" of going directly to hell but he had to live with what he saw and did for another 50 years. In his words: i cannot find a valid reason what was the point of it. My generation did what we did, noone of us is proud of it. Your generation must realize what to do of it. The least you can do is trust us to never do it again...
If u cant already tell im hyped for this one. Just the fact that Isonzo or Soča is less than 40km from my home

We cannot even start to imagine what it was like to go through the meatgrinder of WW1 (WW2, ...). I just cannot imagine myself to be told to grab a gun and go to kill some random dude on the other side for... what for?!?
Many Sabaton songs are in fact anti-war songs. After listening to this one (on iTunes) I have the same futile feeling as is seeping from may Sabaton songs. But it's one hell of a song, pretty catchy with cool lyrics!
Greetings from Italy, my friend. Even if we were enemies once, I hope that your great grandfather found peace and forgiveness, since it appears he was so tormented for all he had to do. War is hell, and may that ticket he mentioned be reserved for the warmongers and criminals that truly deserved it, no matter which flag they fought under. Riposa in pace.
Soška fronta je res bila kar brutalna
Aww.. this song must be really emotional for you 😪
Man, I wish your songs didn't make me sad 90% of the time. Such a bop, but so sad...
"I will guard this post forever" is such a powerful line. It reminds me of the last verse in a Vazov poem, called "The new cemetery over Slivnitsa" about a decrepit and abandoned military cemetery he visited.
" Rest here, under these tombs of ice
You won't hear again a clarion or a chief
Or the thunders of your glorious fights.
Your final march is towards eternity - Heroes, rest in peace"
The entire poem is very beautiful and my translation would, obviously, not do it justice, but it's exactly what this song reminds me of: People who just died and were forgotten - only their mothers felt their absence and remembered their names. it's just ridiculously sad.
I also love how the WW1 planes in the video transition into WW2 planes.
The second verse is really just a beautiful extrapolation of Santayana's „Only the dead have seen the end of war”.
yeah, a very big reason i love this song is because of the message this song gives: "Remember The Fallen and Forgotten"
When World war 2, teenage boys fake his age to enter in army
I love the message behind every song, it's not glorifying war as much as it's a ballad to the brave men who might have fallen. This is one of my favorites so far
Sabaton has never really glorified war so much as recognized things that have occurred and brought light to things that have been forgotten.

Some of their songs most definitely do glorify war. A perfect, recent example is Steel Commanders. Sabaton does the entire range.
@@ZZMonkeysUncleZZ I don't think they ever glorify war, per se, but rather the positive attributes that can be associated with it. War brings out the very best and worst of mankind, and can bring out the worst in good men and mercy in "bad" men, given the right circumstances. It's the most visceral experience that can be attained, and the acts and motivations associated with it run the gamut, just as do their songs. At least that's my two cents.

Lyrics:
I won't be coming home
I won't be going anywhere
I will guard this post forever
Here on the alpine slope, where I did my final stand I shall remain
Among the ice and snow that binds me to this mountain
A force of nature too strong, sent from above
Where spirits lead the way, the winds will never fade
White Friday, I'll take the
Stairway to heaven
I'm sky high, when I die
I'll be immortal
Forever, I never
I won't return to
Blood mountain, I am the
Soldier of heaven
I saw the end of war
I watched the soldiers come and go
And I kept my watch forever
So many brave men fell in the battles that were raging down below
I have seen it all but none will hear my story
All of these years I have been frozen in time
I cried for spring to come but here, winter remain
White Friday, I'll take the
Stairway to heaven
I'm sky high, when I die
I'll be immortal
Forever, I never
I won't return to
Blood mountain, I am the
Soldier of heaven
I always dreamed that I would, serve high above
Where spirits lead the way, the winds will never fade
White Friday, I'll take the
Stairway to heaven
I'm sky high, when I die
I'll be immortal
Forever, I never
I won't return to
Blood mountain, I am the
Soldier of heaven
White Friday, I'll take the
Stairway to heaven
I'm sky high, when I die
I'll be immortal

For some reason this song makes me think of my grandpa who was in Vietnam. I wish I asked for stories, but I was way too young to ask and because I wasn't a history nerd at the time. But now he's one of those soldiers of heaven.... I miss you grandpa. Thank you for your service.
My great grandfather was a german soldier who died in the 2nd world war. I've never met him, though I've met one of his friends who wittnessed him dying.
He used to tell me stories about his unit. But I swear, I've never seen any other human who was in so much pain as he was whenever he remembered the war.
What I wanna say is, dont ask for stories. War rips your soul apart. Those who were involved in combat will always dread the idea of remembering those events
I'm from italy, and listen a song from my favourite band about the war on the Alps, the war that my dad told me from the memories of my grand granpa, make me feels so proud and sad at the same time, the things that happen, how many died for their contry is something the we must not forget. Respect for Austria and Italy forever
My grand grand fathers fought one on Piave, the other on Ortigara. Both ot them came home. Still have their medals as a family heritage.
I am from Austria and my great-grandfather was also stationed in the battles in the Alps. Unfortunately, he was considered missing after the war and we will never know what happened. It was one of the darkest chapters of humanity and I am glad that today we can express mutual respect for each other. Respect for Italy and Austria!
@@gb896 i don't remember where my gran granpa fought, even my dad have some difficult to remind it, i just know that he fought into the Piave front and when he came back from the war he recived the medal lather from mussolini and Vittorio Emanuele III... where is the medal now is unknown, and it is a very sad thing

How do you know it's about the Alps? Looking at the video there's nothing that looks like Italian or Austro-Hungarian units, at least with "Last dying breath" the sides are mentioned....
I've been a HUGE FAN of your music for YEARS! I'm an 0311 combat vet, and I loved listening to your music from Iraq all the way through today! Believe it or not, the music Sabaton created about our fallen, about the wars, the meanings and truths behind a lot of the evils of the world, it actually saved my life. I suffer from depression and severe anxiety, (thanks OIF lol) but listening to them helps me focus, and live for my fallen brothers (from combat, and the struggles within) and my family. Thanks for being awesome and supportive, and thank you for once again topping it off with a fucking outstanding track that I can rock out to and remember what's important to me! SFMF!

"I saw the end of war, I saw the soldiers come and go...." - Sabaton
"Only the dead have seen the end of war." - Plato
I see what you guys did there, well done. I love this song.
I like comments like yours that give me that "holy shit " moment.. that was very well thought out.
Nice observation, I'm a year late but hey?
And the 2 bullets saw 2 and mocks them still
Plato's philosophy about war is probably right on, but also gloomy. So, keeping Plato in mind, I'll also keep Thomas Paine in mind, with the quote from his 1776 pamphlet Common Sense. Get rid of kings, stop seeking "leaders," and we can enjoy peace, with peaceful transition of public servants the goal. "In the early ages of the world, according to the scripture chronology, there were no kings; the consequence of which was there were no wars; it is the pride of kings which throws mankind into confusion." ― Thomas Paine, Common Sense
Plato never said that
My great grandfather fought on the Alps in WWI, from 1915 to 1918.
They told me that even decades later, during the 60s, he woke up once late in the night and left home, saying only, with despair in his eyes, "They broke at Caporetto, i must go back". He served as an Alpino.
Even if he survived, the war never left him.
I really appreciate the song as a tribute to those who had to endure those inhuman conditions, thanks for remembering those who fought.
Povero uomo, il tuo bis-nonno. Spero che lui trovò una forma di pace lo stesso, dopo tutto questo.
cool story
My grandfather too fought, he was one of the leading officers who reorganized the few who remained to hold the Piave after Caporetto, for a couple of days, Luigi Diamanti, the trench where he fought with a machinegun and his attendant can still be found.
Proud to possess the blood-stained flag of his regiment and the watch he was gifted from the regiment:
A golden Cipollotto with a machinegun engraved on it, along with the words "A papà nostro offriamo" (To our dad we offer).
Thank you for never forgetting the memory of battles
Rest in peace to those brave souls, definite Soldiers Of Heaven 😭

I encourage everyone who ever gets the chance to go visit the dolomites / isonzo front. I was at a lot of places around the world, this one was propably the most impactfull.
You have to imagine one of the most beautiful scenaries /mountainscapes in the world, like right out of a fantasy movie (like lord of the rings). And right in the middle you find all the bunkers, bullets, trenches that are still mostly untouched from a century ago, and with the cold in your face and the pain in your calfs from hours of hiking you start just a little bit to get a grasp of the terror those people had to endure. Truly heartbreaking.
This song gives me goosebumps. God bless all the soldiers who have fought and died to make the world a better place. May they be soldiers of heaven.
"Soldier of Heaven" feels like a more respectful description than "Unknown Soldier" and leave it Sabaton to flip the way we think about these lost heroes.
This is 2 releases in a row that hit on an emotional level I wasn't expecting. The level of respect for those who fought before us, regardless of which side they were on is tremendous .
Alright thsi is just a question but what about the lost German,Japanese, and russian soldiers are they heroes to you?
@@Hockey-gn2tj If it were not for the Russian soldiers, then perhaps you would now be sitting in Auschwitz, I'm not saying that they were all valiant heroes, but if they had respect, they sacrificed their lives for saving half of Europe! My great-grandfather was a tanker, he liberated Kiev, Poland and many Russian cities and died in Berlin and it became very unpleasant for me when you compared Soviet soldiers with German and Japanese ...
@@zhenia6297 And if it were not for the American, British and French soldiers, they'd be sitting in the gulags or 6 feet under. Russians never sacrificed their lives for Europe, they just wanted to expand their borders, which was literally the same as what Germans did. Russians attacked Poland, Finland, Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia, in addition to committing Holodomor and other atrocities. Ukrainians were the only heroes in red army.
@@Hockey-gn2tj Well, they never had another option.
@@Ozku9 Well done, you think that the Ukrainians are heroes, my great-grandfather is from Zhitomir, but you write that if it weren't for the Americans, then we would be sitting in the gulag, I'm not saying that the Americans and the British are not heroes, I believe that the winners are all those who invested in victory, but I wrote that I do not agree with the fact that the Soviet soldiers were compared with the Germans and the Japanese ... And one more thing, you think that the Soviet soldiers wanted to invade Europe, you are wrong! The government wanted to seize Europe, but not ordinary soldiers, they fought not for power, but really helped the Europeans, but unfortunately, because of Stalin and his policy of occupation, all of Europe considers ordinary soldiers to be the occupants
The Italians and Austro-Hungarians fought on those peaks; trench warfare in the alps. With the diabolical Luigi Cadorna as general, nearly 700,000 Italians were sent to their deaths trying to fight a literal uphill battle against machine-guns and artillery for the first time. Truly the most brutal (and forgotten) front in the entirety of World War One. And in the end, the British Empire (my country) never gave them the land they were promised after the war was won. These heroes were lost for nothing. Great song, I, most certainly, will never forget the Italian front. 🇮🇹🤝🇬🇧
I thank you for very much for keeping the memory alive, and for sharing your opinion here for those to learn from. You never really see any love to the actual battles, mostly just to Sabaton (even though they still certainly deserve the praise).
I feel a large problem with the UK in World War style peace treaties, it has too many allies, and it realistically needs to provide for itself.
Take WW1, do you help Italy or Serbia USA or Japan? These questions, these choices eventually led to the hate and discontent that led to the rise of men like Mussolini and Tojo.
Small choices may seem insignificant at times, but they can always cause a large effect.
@@lordbonney9779 And the lack of coherent aim for the entente on what this peace would be? Rehabilitative or Punitive?
In addition, the same problem the UK, and other Western powers felt in decolonization. Look at the Kingdom of Yugoslavia. Too many ethnic groups with no structures to make them feel represented
Thank you, as someone passionate about Italian history it's amazing to see respect towards our deeds in WW1 since we are often made fun of (in dumb ways)
Italy stabbed Austria in the back, lost and still got South Tyrol so if I were you I wouldnt complain.

@@sparkdrive2900 White Friday
I think it's a call out to many different battles that tok place atop the frozen mountain tops during the first world war. One of those battles was White Friday where the opposing forces were laughing artillery into the mountain sides to cause avalanches in hopes to bury the other side.
Apart from the WHITE FRIDAY incident of 1916 and the Austro Italian Front, I think this incredible song also is a fitting tribute to every unknown brave soldiers of World War 1 as well. Its a song that pays homage to the many nameless souls that were lost in the "War to end all wars." Absolute legend, Sabaton! ❤️

🪽 to all those heroes who never came home

One real cool detail is how the ww2 era planes fly by, signalling the world moving on and time passing, but his body stays the same. I think it’s because in WW1 when soldiers died in the alps their bodies would stay frozen and preserved, and some almost untouched Austro Hungarians and Italians are still being found today.
That’s creepy as hell, but at least you’ll be able to take home a WW1 antique with you if your slick enough.
Where?
I live in the italian alps, and sometimes the bodies of fallen soldiers are still found and called in as "missing hikers" only to then realize the body is from the great war.
