Kristallnacht, also known as the ‘Night of Broken Glass’, was a pogrom against Germany’s Jewish communities. It targeted synagogues and prayer rooms, Jewish-owned shops and Jewish neighbourhoods. 90 Jews were killed. I always considered this one of Sabaton's best songs ever.
It has a great melancholic while still powerful melody, but the topic is standing out even more. No heroism, just pure suffering and death.

This song works because it holds nothing back. Nothing about this event was redeemable. Not even the little bright moments of heroism from prisoners in the camps or the amazing stories of survival. It was an atrocity founded on lies and blame, culminating in mass murder and torture. Freedom burns, dreams fade away, and all hope turns to dust. Millions lost to the world.
I appreciate that the imagery in the song doesn't dig into shock value, too. That seems to happen a lot in metal, where something serious and awful must be met with shock and horror. But nothing can really describe what they're singing about. All it can do is remark on the shame of it and scold the events for even happening.
Because if we don't prevent these things from happening, that's all we're left with. Shaking our heads, crying, and at a loss for how to even begin to describe what's happened.

    It's a tribute.
    It's a remembrance.
    It's a story.

Imho this song is a a sad and powerful tale about a terrible past that should never be forgotten. So when you are headbanging, singing aloud and dance, you are basically declaring "I will not forget! I will always be against this! This should never be again!". As if you are a historian, telling people about this horror and becoming very emotional and gesturing like crazy. Something like that. Also imho it is an addressing to all the victims - "We remember how it happened, we remember you, we sing and headbang to your honor and memory!". Something like that. Listening 4th time atm.

Before this year, I had known of the holocaust and what happened during it, but I had never looked into it (I prefer to have my research guided in some way, it's best if my teachers form the strategy, though I will If I have to). Recently, I had to do a biography from the perspective of someone specific who displayed moral courage by rescuing Jews. After creating it and presenting it to the grade, and hearing other presentations, I find this song. This was a really deep piece, and I applaud you for doing such a good job, it was very emotional. Thing is: While the Jews as a whole and the genocide certainly weren't forgotten, the other groups that were murdered in the holocaust are barely talked about (which kind of makes sense because if I remember correctly Jews and descendants of Jews were the vast majority, but still ain't that great), but apart from a few prominent victims the individuals who got gassed, shot, mistreated or worked to death aren't remembered as the people they were, and instead only as a blank mass of human "resources" burnt in that hellfire, and even the more prominent victims will probably fade from the memory of the living sooner or later. That is obviously something that happens with every dead person, but in my mind it still makes the whole thing seem much more harmless when you can't think of the people that died in any way other than a number on a piece of paper (or a screen).

I heard people call this song distasteful for making a frankly vibing rock song out of mankind's most horrific atrocity, but i honestly think it is really well done. There are no heroes here, or glory, like in Sabaton's other work - just pure harsh reality. The lyrics never touch on the exact nature of the atrocities, but it only makes it scarier.
The animation looks sloppy, like it was made with cutouts with no respect for perspective or shadows - but if anything this only adds to the effect. There are many little details i appreciate - the signs show historical facts when no lyrics are present, "arbeit macht frei" on the gate. The setting is one of classic horror, with a full moon at night and ravens flying over distorted humans.
Despite everything in the video being highly surreal and almost supernatural the lyrics are weirdly humanizing - no hate comes out of nowhere, and this song is a warning to what happens when you let that hate go to its logical extreme.
As a jew who has seen my fair share of traumatizing and melancholic songs about the Holocaust this one stands out as being a _metal_ song that still manages to capture the sheer horror of what happened there in a way that is both vague and direct.
I hope you had fun reading through my overanalyzation of a Sabaton song about the _Holocaust_ in the middle of the night when i really should be sleeping.

When we learnt about this at school I didn't really understand how horrific this was. We just learnt that they sent the Jews to concentration camps. They didn't the other peoples which the Nazis sent to the concentration camps. This song conveyed the horrific things that happened more than they ever conveyed at school. Thank You for making this song.

perfect, i will have a history test in my geschichtsunterricht (german history in school) this friday. the endlösung (~ final solution) is the main topic, and two years ago, i had a presentation about sabaton

Are you in germany? If so, I have heard from some people that in Germany. You just skip everything between 1933 to 1945.
I don't think that is very correct, but it's better to ask a real german

@@RasEli03 the people you heard that from were tourist right?
cause that era is pretty much the main focus in history lessons
i would guess that around 60% of the time that era is the topic (back then in shool it felt more like 90%) and a lot of times it includes a trip to concentration camp
which will leave you with a strange feeling you can not describe
(this varies from one to another federal state a bit, but not that much)

This week we started with the rise of Hitler 1933, so we learn more than half a year about the time period 1933 - 1945. Hope this answer is enough.

That song, it made me cry. I've been to Auschwitz few times and I cried every time.
It also reminds me of my Polish grandpa who was a spy for a British spy network. He went to 10 concentration camps including Auschwitz pretending as a nazi officer with the uniform. He was traumatised of the horrors he saw.
I couldn't imagine what he had been through.
I salute you Sabaton for the brilliant song. As a Quaker and a metalhead, I respect what you do. On my bucket list, see you live ASAP.

I just can’t believe that. He’d have to have had a way to get that Schutzstaffel uniform, and he’d need paperwork to prove his identity, etc. They weren’t lax on security. I’m sorry but this sounds so made-up.

@@KAT-hs3xh I know about that, they planted fake plans on a corpse. However, the story they’re trying to sell in this comment seems ludicrous. There’s no way they’d be able to just get a uniform like that, paperwork, etc, to be able to get in. One seems far-fetched.. but ten? Get real. If this is true, it only makes the brits more guilty of doing nothing, I mean they knew about it two years in advance thanks to aerial reconnaissance.

Sabaton, thank you for this video. My grandmother (our matriarch) passed away about 6 weeks ago at the age of ninety.
I am her eldest grandchild of her 47 grand kids. She was the only survivor of her family in Czechoslovakia. She stayed in refugee camps, then went to what is now Israel and started all over again. She married and had 13 children, living on a farm called Ben Shemen.
She had a tough life, and her depression and sorrow left its mark on her kids, including my mom, her 2nd born, but we moved ahead, wearing her scars.
I have always loved this song, but seeing the video, with the Star of David and the Sabaton logo brought me chills and filled me with Hope. I personally dedicate this comment to you, savta (grandma).
You are our backbone that carried us all forward. One life that gave life to so many. I should add, 11 great grandchildren and counting. One was just born a week after she passed.
Thank you, Sabaton. And thanks to anyone who read this. You are loved. Never Forget!
