Hi Rob. Firstly, he asked for Polish food because that kind of food apparently was on the menu, but really wasn't (a marketing ploy). Secondly, in many places, Asian people speak in a way that is so difficult to understand, and I can relate to that.
There is a BIG difference between racism and stereotypes. It was not meant as an insult. It was aired YEARS ago. I remember myself. Warsaw in the 90's. Cheap vietnamese and Chinese food. They hardly spoke polish with a heavy accent. It is a gig, not a racist show. Just saying.
If someone is looking for any signs of racisms, he will find it everywhere, even in non existing places. It's a joke, a gig. Is it funny nowadays? It's a different question - to me, it's still kinda funny... it's not the best, but it made me smile few times 😉 (smile, not laugh)

On the other hand, the customer tempted by this leaflet was deceived and got something different than what he ordered, so he got angry at the beginning. In fact, the funny thing is that he ordered a typically Polish dish in a Chinese restaurant. It's a cabaret, it doesn't have to be logical.😉
I have to explain the final joke about the instant soup. In the early 1990s in Poland you could only buy instant soups from Chinese cuisine, so people started calling "chinese soup" every instant soup, even when typically Polish flavors were already available, like pomidorowa or rosół

He ask why they have polish food - for example kopytka (polish food like gnnochi) in menu and waiter answer "marketing ploy" that is why the customer is here and why he is so angry. Chinese waiter looks innocent but he is quite smart. He prepare instant soup in restaurant 😜

In the 1990s and early 2000s, there weren't many ethnic restaurants, and what did exist usually served little ethnic food. Here the joke is based on the fact that the owner has Polish dishes on the menu (to attract customers). And in terms of people who are attached to "their native food," I have to say that the British lead the way - no matter what corner of the world (even in Japan) - if there are British guests, there is also an English breakfast with beans and bacon in the offer.
Rob, you asked why he wanted polish food in the Chinese restaurant. I hope that I remember correct, many years ago members of this cabaret said in interview that genesis of this sketch was real visit in Chinese restaurant. They had returned from performance and were very hungry. They wanted to eat whatever and found only one opened restaurant where worked Chinese waiter and they can't communicated because he didn't speak Polish.

You simply need some BACKGROUND to understand a lot of inside jokes here... 1. Poles had first WIDE contact with real Asian cuisine in early 90-ties through first VIETNAMESE street food stalls in Warsaw (Plac Konstytucji). And most of us found it really tasty, but SOME were surprised with "5 spices beef" ("wołowina 5 smaków") or other dishes THE GUY IS REFERING TO (he actually says about his own experience with "looking for a real meat and finding pieces of fried cauliflower instead" - you would maybe understand if you would go for example to MR WOO in SOHO, London and buy something for 5 pounds 15 years ago... and found pieces of vegetables pretending to be pieces of meat) 2. Poles DO NOT KNOW who invented INSTANT NOODLES (a Japanese founder of brand NISSIN) and they refer to these noodles as "CHIŃSKA ZUPKA BŁYSKAWICZNA" (cheap "chinese instant noodle soup". The FUN FACT in early 90-ties was, that VIETNAMEESE brand of these kind of instant noodle soups were VERY POPULAR in Poland to a degree, that VIFON (having factory in RADOM city in Poland) started making more of the POLISH kinds of these soups, resembling POLISH traditional tastes: A) TOMATO soup B) CHEESE soup C) MUSHROOM soup D) GOLDEN CHICKEN soup and others... Another FUN FACT is the fact, that original VIFON noodle soups made in VIETNAM have mostly RICE NOODLES inside and the Polish version of VIFON had always ONLY a typical Polish WHEAT'n'EGGS NOODLES... So the whole story is mostly about the fact that. SOMEONE pretending to be CHINESE was serving a cheap, low quality food, pretending to be CHINESE, and he was pretending to be able to offer original POLISH food, actually serving VIETNAMESE food, bu not a real one, but the fake one, produced in POLAND...
Polish comedy used to approach "racism" a bit differently than English speaking world does now. Racist was something that was vulgar, derogatory or diminishing towards other races. Not something, that was simply using other race in a piece (like in this example).
As, for example, in this joke about an Englishman: An Englishman on holiday in Spain saw a sign on one of the buildings saying that there were English-speaking doctors here. The Englishman thought this was a great idea! - We should have such in England,' he said after a while.

Spokojnie, od końca komunizmu do UE to jeszcze prawie 15 lat rozwoju (odbudowy?) Polski było. I kolejne 3 lata zanim byliśmy w Schengen. A i za komuny gastronomia wyglądała lepiej niż piszesz.
Żeby zrozumieć ten skecz, trzeba przede wszystkim znać język polski i specyfikę tamtych lat. Dlatego młodzi ludzie nie rozumieją starych kabaretów. mimo że znają język polski. Wielu ludzi nie rozumie humoru kabaretu Dudek. Bo nie znają tamtych realiów.
The reason the customer orders Polish food at Chinese restaurant is because of two things: 1) because the restaurant's leaflet promoted Polish cuisine as a marketing ploy (even if it wasn't true in reality), and 2) because the restaurant was close.
Kabarets are not always meant to be logical, it's just for laughts and giggles. Same as in stand-up the racism is still something we should be able to laugh at in situations like these.

It is very funny, one of my favourite kabaret from Ani Mru Mru, from their beginnings. It is more related to the language, but overall it is really good.
It was hilarious. I remember watching this back then when was still new. And it’s still very funny to me. One thing changed since then: Poles do not stick to Polish food as much as that time, actually Poles really love Chinese (Asian) cuisine. I think Rob you missed the most important point in this cabaret: he went to this restaurant because of the advertisement - their leaflet had Polish food on menu, but it was „marketing plot” only 😅 I’m not sure if I’m correct but that time advertisement didn’t had such strict rules like nowadays and literally there were full of lies and false informations. Here you have extreme example of „marketing ploy”.

In the 1990s, it was difficult to get along in a "Chinese bar"(usually Vietnamese), there was a different menu in the leaflets, I remember. That's why it made the audience laugh. It was trendy then.Besides, it wasn't very clean, and all meat tasted the same: pork, beef, veal.😬 There was an urban legend back then that they hunted and served pigeons in these bars. Oh, there's nothing racist about it. There are simply funny stereotypes about other nations in every country. About the English too 😬😁👍 They probably talks about us on the Islands too.
Around 2002 when this scetch was being showed for the first time it was peak of humoru for many people. I remember how we've watched it many years ago and we laughed hard. Then I watched it many many years later and it didn't make me laugh anymore 😅
It is as simple as the construction of a cepa. The restaurant is Chinese, but the advertising flyer for this pub contained Polish dishes. So the guy goes into the restaurant and wants the Polish dish that he saw in the advertising flyer, and that's what the whole row is about, a sketch that shows cultural differences and stereotypes about Chinese people in Poland. It is a difficult sketch because it shows the ambiguity of words and expressions in Polish, which cannot be translated into English. For a foreigner, this sketch is difficult to understand because it is firmly rooted in Polish history and culture, and in order to explain it all, I would have to sit next to you and explain it to you sentence by sentence, with whole footnotes and references to culture and history, and then we would watch this sketch for two days. It is full of associations.
It's hilarious Rob, the humour for a big part is in the pronunciation of Polish words that are so twisted that they mean something different or make no sense at all 🤣😂 And this "kabaret" comes from times when Chinese food was unknown in Poland and most people used to eat just Polish traditional food .
That's actually untrue. Vietnamese (called wrongly Chinese) cheap bistroes were very popular back then especially in big cities. The personnel were native and the amount of polish they new was very limited with heavy accent so the joke was quite accurate but of course very exaggerated.
It is not outdated and it is not rasist, it is all true, even now 😂 and translated version isnt so funny, you dont understand polish ppl so well as you thought, we love dark humor and this is still very funny. 😝
I think it might be funny for People from Warsaw. There were many chinese, vietnamese, or thai restaurant but it was difficult to eat some polish food. Such "international" times. Now it is less funny than 20 years ago, we have got many types of reastaurant nowadays...
This particular performance is impassible to translate in funny way to English, mostly becomes 90% of the jokes depend on misspoke words and duble meaning in polish, the translation you watched didn't say it when it happened, for example when the waiter said chicken he misspoked in a way that sounds very similar to one of the ways you can say dick in polish, so the joke it's that he's saying that in the bowl is "spicy dick in butter". And that kind of jokes are literally the only funny thing in this kabaret, and obviously they are not funny when someone one have to explain everyone of them to you
Rob, there are three reasons why it is less funny for you, but it is still funny for us: 1. Much of the humour is related to the language. Chinese has a very distinct phonetics, so does Polish, but in another way. That's why it is almost impossible to pronounce correctly any Polish text, and almost every word is twisted or simplified in a funny way. 2. The sketch reflects the early stage of interaction between the first immigrants (usually from China and Vietnam) in Warsaw. At that time, any foreigner in Poland was just exotic (now we have millions of people from various nationalities). There is no racism - it is just a stereotypical depiction of an average Chinese among the Polish society of the 90's. And, what's more, the Polish client is behaving with a certain superiority (as a client), but, at the end, the Chinese waiter is making fun of the Polish guy and eventually winning the game. You can see in his eyes, and ironic smile, how he is actually laughing at the poor Pole trying to play a mafia boss, but actually getting nothing decent to eat; 3. As you noticed, the sketch reflect the conservatism of the Polish society, who only wants a schabowy, potatoes and cabbage, which is funny -the client actually does not want anything Chinese which adds irony to point 2: the poor Pole can't get anything to eat:)

I my opinion, this sketch is untranslatable, but i recommend you another one from Ani Mru Meu "Tofik" (if you will find video with english subtitles obviously) it is the most ridiculous sketch i have watched ever
Powinien zobaczyć bardziej współczesne skecze typu "Klinika uzależnień" albo "Sanatorium", bo taka "Chińska restauracja" czy nawet "Tofik" jest oceniany przez nas zbyt wysoko głównie przez wzgląd na sentyment, jednakowoż były to zdecydowanie początki istnienia grupy, dlatego należy pójść raczej w kierunku ostatnich lat, kiedy to skecze AMM robione były przez doświadczonych już zawodowych artystów.

7:43 as the chinesse guy has explained before when customer did complain about things he got in his bowl exchange he did order, and then chinesse guy said it's a ,,chłeeet martegingowy", more or less it free translation according to this Kabaret, it was marketing fraud to bring more customers. So they did provide polish cousine only on printed advertisment
I think you missed something Robert, you were wondering why a Pole went to a Chinese restaurant and wanted to eat something Polish... but the Chinese guy said that it was a marketing trick that they sold kopytka... that's why the Pole went to this restaurant... and by the way, I love Chinese cuisine and so do my family and friends.
It's still a bit funny (or maybe I'm old enough to get a bit sentimental, and that sucks 😂) but mostly because of that 'Chinese' fight for Polish pronunciation, that's really hilarious for a Pole 😅 it's really hard to translate, though. And first, opening line, the 'Chinese' character was trying to read the line but he was doing it backwards (presumably like in Chinese? From right to left. And he was pronouncing backwards, letter after letter)
To understand the times, one can compare them to the show "Little Britain." While the show can be somewhat offensive due to its heavy stereotyping, it also reflects certain realities. For instance, it features an arrogant border officer who lacks basic geographical knowledge, a portrayal that is amusing to Poles, who generally have a better education in geography (and history).
You could watch 'krystyna kabaret' by kabaret Nowaki there are few episodes about lady named Krystyna and trust me they're funny, i recomment 'krystyna, ksiądz i policjant' but i'm not sure if that part was translated
The customer decided to visit that chinese restaurant because: 1. As he explained, he was in a hurry and it was the only place nearby 2. The false advertisment clearly stated that polish food is avaliable in the menu
This cabaret is deeply immersed in the Polish experience of the 1990s and even earlier. And on a play on words. Probably even the current generation of Poles will not understand all the references. I won't be able to explain everything, but I will give you some examples. The waiter and probably the owner speak. "The customer is our master". It was a marketing slogan. Mainly in lower quality restaurants. It was probably in everyone of the weak ones. On the one hand, we had a slogan that the customer is always right. With more expensive poor listening in restaurants. For some Poles, this slogan was a sign that they would definitely not be well served. When the waiter says, "The customer is our man," he is actually mocking the customer. Next. The waiter says pork in five flavors. But in its first word it is close to the word hłeptowina. From the word slurping. Lapping means eating food without any signs of culture. Typically, such a meal will consist of one dish and will have a semi-liquid consistency. Basically, every five seconds of the performance would have to be analyzed in this way.
If it were available with polish english it would be great to watch for you two skecht that present funny way of ordering the food. Both are made by KMN group "fast food" and "fish and chips shop"
Two different cultures and different languages try to communicate and it is funny at least for one side. Chinese polish sounds so funny. I think it's because those people learnt from listening not from professional courses. You in England are used to different nations speaking English. For us it's sth new and not common. And we're not racist at all, we like Asians in Poland very much. They integrate well and don't cause any troubles.
Most of the jokes are about how easy it is for foreigners to twist Polish words if they want to talk to us in our language. Real life example. I once go into a bakery where a acquaintance Ukrainian woman is selling, and she says to me: "Peasant! (Wieśniara)" I am outraged and ask: "What?" And she tells me, surprised by my reaction, that: "In Ukraine, a Wiesniara is said to be someone who has already felt spring." Because in Ukrainian spring is "Wiesna" and in Polish "Wiosna". I almost got angry with her, and it was just a language mistake.
Imagine you go to cheep Polish restaurant in London, and the waiter do not speak English. In menu you see fish and chips, but what you get is "fasola po bretońsku". And finally the waiter throw cold tee on your trousers. Yeah - it is not funny ;)

7:36 - not true, Chinese run cheap bars serving all kind of food they sometimes have over 100 positions in the menu, beside Chinese varieties, always local ones too. And iot is not like that in Poland only but everywhere, in Brazil or whgerever

You need to know, Rob, that there aren’t many Asians in Poland, so it is quite actual for Polish reality ;) Why this customer wants Polish food? Because in the restaurants leaflet it was advertised “kopytka” Tahoe away… Kopytka are Polish dish ;)
This is a very funny skit, but absolutely not for a foreigner. A game with words where a Chinese person tries to speak Polish and the sounds of the words are distorted. This sketch will not be understandable to a foreigner.

I hope that I remember correct, many years ago members of this cabaret said in interview that genesis of this sketch was real visit in Chinese restaurant. They had returned from performance and were very hungry. They wanted to eat whatever and found only one opened restaurant where worked Chinese waiter and they can't communicated because he didn't speak Polish.
I'm pretty sure, foreigners wont understand these dialogues translated to english. U simply cant translate polish to english 😅

1. Poles had first WIDE contact with real Asian cuisine in early 90-ties through first VIETNAMESE street food stalls in Warsaw (Plac Konstytucji). And most of us found it really tasty, but SOME were surprised with "5 spices beef" ("wołowina 5 smaków") or other dishes THE GUY IS REFERING TO (he actually says about his own experience with "looking for a real meat and finding pieces of fried cauliflower instead" - you would maybe understand if you would go for example to MR WOO in SOHO, London and buy something for 5 pounds 15 years ago... and found pieces of vegetables pretending to be pieces of meat)
2. Poles DO NOT KNOW who invented INSTANT NOODLES (a Japanese founder of brand NISSIN) and they refer to these noodles as "CHIŃSKA ZUPKA BŁYSKAWICZNA" (cheap "chinese instant noodle soup". The FUN FACT in early 90-ties was, that VIETNAMEESE brand of these kind of instant noodle soups were VERY POPULAR in Poland to a degree, that VIFON (having factory in RADOM city in Poland) started making more of the POLISH kinds of these soups, resembling POLISH traditional tastes: A) TOMATO soup B) CHEESE soup C) MUSHROOM soup D) GOLDEN CHICKEN soup and others...
Another FUN FACT is the fact, that original VIFON noodle soups made in VIETNAM have mostly RICE NOODLES inside and the Polish version of VIFON had always ONLY a typical Polish WHEAT'n'EGGS NOODLES...
So the whole story is mostly about the fact that. SOMEONE pretending to be CHINESE was serving a cheap, low quality food, pretending to be CHINESE, and he was pretending to be able to offer original POLISH food, actually serving VIETNAMESE food, bu not a real one, but the fake one, produced in POLAND...

Polish comedy used to approach "racism" a bit differently than English speaking world does now. Racist was something that was vulgar, derogatory or diminishing towards other races. Not something, that was simply using other race in a piece (like in this example).
As, for example, in this joke about an Englishman:

Spokojnie, od końca komunizmu do UE to jeszcze prawie 15 lat rozwoju (odbudowy?) Polski było. I kolejne 3 lata zanim byliśmy w Schengen. A i za komuny gastronomia wyglądała lepiej niż piszesz.

Żeby zrozumieć ten skecz, trzeba przede wszystkim znać język polski i specyfikę tamtych lat. Dlatego młodzi ludzie nie rozumieją starych kabaretów. mimo że znają język polski. Wielu ludzi nie rozumie humoru kabaretu Dudek. Bo nie znają tamtych realiów.
Uwielbiam Dudka, TEY, Laskowika ale jako czterdziestolatek trochę pamiętam lata około PRL. Pewexy i kartki na mięso.
Bez znajomości języka polskiego trudno wyczuć śmieszność, humor. Mężczyzna wszedł, żeby było śmiesznie (wirtualna sytuacja).
The reason the customer orders Polish food at Chinese restaurant is because of two things: 1) because the restaurant's leaflet promoted Polish cuisine as a marketing ploy (even if it wasn't true in reality), and 2) because the restaurant was close.
Kabarets are not always meant to be logical, it's just for laughts and giggles. Same as in stand-up the racism is still something we should be able to laugh at in situations like these.

It is more related to the language, but overall it is really good.
It was hilarious. I remember watching this back then when was still new. And it’s still very funny to me. One thing changed since then: Poles do not stick to Polish food as much as that time, actually Poles really love Chinese (Asian) cuisine.
I think Rob you missed the most important point in this cabaret: he went to this restaurant because of the advertisement - their leaflet had Polish food on menu, but it was „marketing plot” only 😅
I’m not sure if I’m correct but that time advertisement didn’t had such strict rules like nowadays and literally there were full of lies and false informations. Here you have extreme example of „marketing ploy”.

In the 1990s, it was difficult to get along in a "Chinese bar"(usually Vietnamese), there was a different menu in the leaflets, I remember. That's why it made the audience laugh. It was trendy then.Besides, it wasn't very clean, and all meat tasted the same: pork, beef, veal.😬 There was an urban legend back then that they hunted and served pigeons in these bars. Oh, there's nothing racist about it. There are simply funny stereotypes about other nations in every country. About the English too 😬😁👍 They probably talks about us on the Islands too.

Around 2002 when this scetch was being showed for the first time it was peak of humoru for many people. I remember how we've watched it many years ago and we laughed hard. Then I watched it many many years later and it didn't make me laugh anymore 😅
It is as simple as the construction of a cepa. The restaurant is Chinese, but the advertising flyer for this pub contained Polish dishes. So the guy goes into the restaurant and wants the Polish dish that he saw in the advertising flyer, and that's what the whole row is about, a sketch that shows cultural differences and stereotypes about Chinese people in Poland. It is a difficult sketch because it shows the ambiguity of words and expressions in Polish, which cannot be translated into English. For a foreigner, this sketch is difficult to understand because it is firmly rooted in Polish history and culture, and in order to explain it all, I would have to sit next to you and explain it to you sentence by sentence, with whole footnotes and references to culture and history, and then we would watch this sketch for two days. It is full of associations.
It's hilarious Rob, the humour for a big part is in the pronunciation of Polish words that are so twisted that they mean something different or make no sense at all 🤣😂
And this "kabaret" comes from times when Chinese food was unknown in Poland and most people used to eat just Polish traditional food .
That's actually untrue. Vietnamese (called wrongly Chinese) cheap bistroes were very popular back then especially in big cities. The personnel were native and the amount of polish they new was very limited with heavy accent so the joke was quite accurate but of course very exaggerated.
It is not outdated and it is not rasist, it is all true, even now 😂 and translated version isnt so funny, you dont understand polish ppl so well as you thought, we love dark humor and this is still very funny. 😝
This is a remake of a Monty Python skit from How to Irritate People.
I think it might be funny for People from Warsaw. There were many chinese, vietnamese, or thai restaurant but it was difficult to eat some polish food. Such "international" times. Now it is less funny than 20 years ago, we have got many types of reastaurant nowadays...
This particular performance is impassible to translate in funny way to English, mostly becomes 90% of the jokes depend on misspoke words and duble meaning in polish, the translation you watched didn't say it when it happened, for example when the waiter said chicken he misspoked in a way that sounds very similar to one of the ways you can say dick in polish, so the joke it's that he's saying that in the bowl is "spicy dick in butter". And that kind of jokes are literally the only funny thing in this kabaret, and obviously they are not funny when someone one have to explain everyone of them to you
Rob, there are three reasons why it is less funny for you, but it is still funny for us:
1. Much of the humour is related to the language. Chinese has a very distinct phonetics, so does Polish, but in another way. That's why it is almost impossible to pronounce correctly any Polish text, and almost every word is twisted or simplified in a funny way.
2. The sketch reflects the early stage of interaction between the first immigrants (usually from China and Vietnam) in Warsaw. At that time, any foreigner in Poland was just exotic (now we have millions of people from various nationalities). There is no racism - it is just a stereotypical depiction of an average Chinese among the Polish society of the 90's. And, what's more, the Polish client is behaving with a certain superiority (as a client), but, at the end, the Chinese waiter is making fun of the Polish guy and eventually winning the game. You can see in his eyes, and ironic smile, how he is actually laughing at the poor Pole trying to play a mafia boss, but actually getting nothing decent to eat;
3. As you noticed, the sketch reflect the conservatism of the Polish society, who only wants a schabowy, potatoes and cabbage, which is funny -the client actually does not want anything Chinese which adds irony to point 2: the poor Pole can't get anything to eat:)

Powinien zobaczyć bardziej współczesne skecze typu "Klinika uzależnień" albo "Sanatorium", bo taka "Chińska restauracja" czy nawet "Tofik" jest oceniany przez nas zbyt wysoko głównie przez wzgląd na sentyment, jednakowoż były to zdecydowanie początki istnienia grupy, dlatego należy pójść raczej w kierunku ostatnich lat, kiedy to skecze AMM robione były przez doświadczonych już zawodowych artystów.

It's still a bit funny (or maybe I'm old enough to get a bit sentimental, and that sucks 😂) but mostly because of that 'Chinese' fight for Polish pronunciation, that's really hilarious for a Pole 😅 it's really hard to translate, though. And first, opening line, the 'Chinese' character was trying to read the line but he was doing it backwards (presumably like in Chinese? From right to left. And he was pronouncing backwards, letter after letter)

To understand the times, one can compare them to the show "Little Britain." While the show can be somewhat offensive due to its heavy stereotyping, it also reflects certain realities. For instance, it features an arrogant border officer who lacks basic geographical knowledge, a portrayal that is amusing to Poles, who generally have a better education in geography (and history).

This cabaret is deeply immersed in the Polish experience of the 1990s and even earlier. And on a play on words. Probably even the current generation of Poles will not understand all the references. I won't be able to explain everything, but I will give you some examples.
The waiter and probably the owner speak. "The customer is our master". It was a marketing slogan. Mainly in lower quality restaurants. It was probably in everyone of the weak ones. On the one hand, we had a slogan that the customer is always right. With more expensive poor listening in restaurants. For some Poles, this slogan was a sign that they would definitely not be well served. When the waiter says, "The customer is our man," he is actually mocking the customer.
Next. The waiter says pork in five flavors. But in its first word it is close to the word hłeptowina. From the word slurping. Lapping means eating food without any signs of culture. Typically, such a meal will consist of one dish and will have a semi-liquid consistency.
Basically, every five seconds of the performance would have to be analyzed in this way.
If it were available with polish english it would be great to watch for you two skecht that present funny way of ordering the food. Both are made by KMN group "fast food" and "fish and chips shop"
Two different cultures and different languages try to communicate and it is funny at least for one side. Chinese polish sounds so funny. I think it's because those people learnt from listening not from professional courses. You in England are used to different nations speaking English. For us it's sth new and not common. And we're not racist at all, we like Asians in Poland very much. They integrate well and don't cause any troubles.
Most of the jokes are about how easy it is for foreigners to twist Polish words if they want to talk to us in our language.
Real life example. I once go into a bakery where a acquaintance Ukrainian woman is selling, and she says to me: "Peasant! (Wieśniara)" I am outraged and ask: "What?" And she tells me, surprised by my reaction, that: "In Ukraine, a Wiesniara is said to be someone who has already felt spring." Because in Ukrainian spring is "Wiesna" and in Polish "Wiosna".
I almost got angry with her, and it was just a language mistake.
