Too bad you couldn't just show when he switched to behind his back. He's playing one note with his left hand and undoes the strap with his right hand, swings the guitar out and back behind him, reconnecting the strap, without it falling off his left shoulder, and continues to solo. another version he plays behind his head instead.

I saw Stevie 5 times in concert. Without a doubt best guitarist I've seen live. You should do Kenny Wayne Sheppard as well. There's a video of Stevie where he does a one handed solo that's amazing. I will post song or link here when I figure it out. Great reaction guys.

I could go on and on with the lists of great 🎸 ists..Robin trower...tony iommi....Michael shenker... Jimmy Hendrix..Alex lifeson..jimmy page...Eric Clapton...eddie van halen..there are so many..any one of these I mentioned could take the title. And there are many I didnt name who are great! Jimmy Hendrix is the one who if you watch his performances ..damn the mf played upside down! That's right!
I'd like to add though that an argument could be made for SRV being the greatest! He surely was extremely talented! Id say he was prob one of the top 5 greatest blues players! I'm saying nothing wrong with having him as your greatest! He's def worthy!👍

Used insanely heavy 13 gauge strings which would tear apart most any player’s hands. They were necessary because he bent like nobody. Had gorilla strength hands.
Paul Scherdell He used to use super glue cause his fingers did get tore up. Super glue and keep playing.

Was in Austin when he recorded Live Alive . It sold out in under 2 hours . At the time it was a record .

I am in shock, I had to watch the live video myself and my jaw was literally dropped both times (one from this video and one from the live video), but dude, HOW IS THIS LEGAL?!?!?! He's so good and unbelievable he can play guitar behind his back! COMPLETELY UNREAL!!!! A 10 isn't even enough to rate this guy, maybe a 100/10. Just amazing and WOW!!!!!
His MTV Unplugged sets are legendary as well. He does a few songs on a 12 string, and the sound is amazing. The ability to play a 12 string “acoustic” that cleanly makes you wonder what planet he’s from.

Me too, like losing family. Saw him and Jeff Beck on the same ticket... that was kind of AWESOME. Him and Beck wailed "Goin' Down” at the end together, all smiles through it all. They admired each other a lot. If Jeff Beck and Eric Clapton like you as much as they did; I think you got something.

You should definitely watch BB King & John Mayer play together on UA-cam. Just because he's not as good as Stevie Ray doesnt make him an "okay" guitarist. If you play with BB, you're a good guitarist. Period.
It's great watching a new generation appreciating the music I grew up with. We didn't have the technology to enhance music. The music industry couldn't create a star back then. You were either an artist or you weren't.

SRV was just stupid talented...inly a handful with his ability, even less with his passion. You guys need to bone up on some of the greats...you touched on one, but don't yet know enough or haven't been exposed enough to his raw talent. Terry Kath of Chicago. Dig into any archives of his recordings, or watch every piece of live footage you can find...rerely gets the credit he's honestly due...and the sleeper of today: John Meyer...that m'r f'ker can PLAY..
The other thing Stevie does like no one else is that he plays in a continuum. Most blues guitarists use individual riffs with space between. In long format blues playing, players like BB King and Eric Clapton often use short bursts, one to the other. SRV plays continuously with one riff leading seamlessly to the next to the next to the next. It is truly jammed and spontaneous as well. It is equivalent to channeling. It is super human and soul inspired. His playing is sublime.
ROFL. SRV did more amazing playing in the intro to this song alone than most do on 6 full albums lolol.
In a way it's hard to call him a "guitarist", the guitar was basically another appendage of his body. He could speak with it as effortlessly as he could speak through his mouth.

Stevie never made a mistake. Gilmour is my all time guitarist, but he hit clunkers all the time. Also, Stevie supposedly used strings that were as thick as as coat hangers, and he could bend all 5 at the same time. You guys should watch the rest of the El Mocambo show on your own time some night. Every song is spellbinding. I miss Stevie. Saw him live many times. I knew it was a privilege to witness him in person at the time, and I'm glad I got to do it so often. Talent like his is mercurial, and is frequently taken from us too soon.

SRV is a virtuoso. David Bowie was the first to feature him as a session guitarist on Bowie's 1983 Album "Let's Dance". All through the album you hear David Bowie backed by SRV's phenomenal artistry.
Yep, SRV's debut, "Texas Flood", was actually recorded a month before "Let's Dance" but was released 2 month's later than Bowie's album.
Yeah, and Stevie was quite angry when the video came out for _Let's Dance_ (the single) and it showed Bowie playing his guitar solo. Justifiably so. I'm not saying David Bowie can't play guitar, but he's no Stevie Ray Vaughn. That guitar solo is like a fingerprint. This was before SRV was famous though so Bowie got away with it.
Related: My ex went with a girlfriend to see Men At Work in Portland back in the 80's, not because she liked the band that much but because her girlfriend got free tickets and backstage passes from Men At Work's drummer, who sat next to her on a flight. So they went to the concert and guess who the _opening act_ was? Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble. Men At Work was huge right then, so the audience booed SRV when they started to play. My ex's response was "What? This guy is great!" Shows the fickleness of music consumers of any era. Then they went backstage and met Men at Work and got stoned with the drummer (Jerry Speiser) who was a good 13 years older than they were at the time. She said most of the band was cool, but Colin Hay was a real asshole.

I don't like the Lets Dance album, except for the guitar parts
Bowie heard a unsigned and unknown Double Trouble play at the Montreux Jazz Festival and was blown away. Funny thing was they were boo’d there because the crowd was there to see acoustic music that night and probably had no idea what they were witnessing. Well Bowie asked him to play on his new album. He also wanted him to go on tour as part of his band but SRV wasn’t interested in that and wanted to do his own thing and said no. Considering he was still unsigned and broke it took guts. Anyways Jackson Browne also discovered them at Montreux and invited them to use his home studio, which they used to get a record deal. At the time blues was considered a dead genre at least commercially and despite the obvious talent nobody wanted to sign them. SRV essentially made blues cool again.
Please please please do Tin Pan Alley live at Montreux with Stevie Ray and Johnny Copeland, its the most amazing thing I have ever seen live!

Stunning, and Live at the El Mocambo was one of Stevie’s best performances. His version of Lenny is really worth watching. Brings a tear to the eye!

Stevie would also release that emotion by yelling right before he rips into a solo. A classic example is Texas Flood at Austin City Limits in 83, and Tightrope at Austin City Limits in 89. Both audibly showcase the vocal expression to accompany the facial expression.
What else can be said about him? He's simply the best ever.
‘Live at the Mocambo’ could be the best SRV concert video out there.
*Please check out Stevie playing the extremely soulful rendition of the song “Lenny” from this same concert. I can’t think of another example of a guitar player getting so much feeling from playing a song.

I saw him 4 times. Once in Chicago in 78 when no one even ever heard of him opening up for Bob Segar at Chicago fest. Saw him the night he died at Alpine Valley. Best I ever seen but my favorite is Terry Kath from the band Chicago. Check them out if you get the chance.
I never got to see him. I had a few chances in the late 80's but I was broke. I was at Boot Camp at Great Lakes when he died. We didn't get t.v. or newspapers, but one of the Company Commanders brought in a clip from the paper and told us SRV had died.

I'm with you, Alex, he's my favorite of all time guitarist, I mean really. He didn't know how to read music, he said trying got in his way, he just played from his heart.
An amazing thing about SRV is often he would get local bands to open for him . A friend of mine was lucky enough to have the honour . I saw him twice and the energy in the audience is an indescribable experience . You can literally see SRV having an out of body experience . RIP
In my opinion, SRV and JH is both #1. Stevie, in my opinion, is the greatest guitarist of all time. The way he plays, the way he writes, the way he enjoys the music. He knows he's awesome. Sadly, he died in a helicopter crash in 1990. Love you Stevie ❤️❤️

Wondering if you've listened to Pride and Joy by now .... Seeing him in person was quite an experience. He was totally a force of nature. Saw him in Baton Rouge at little club in the university area when he and Double Trouble opened for the Fabulous Thunderbirds. No one had heard of SRV yet. He had his following in TX but he just wasn't so well known outside his area yet. So, we loved the T-Birds and were really looking forward to seeing them in person. Ok, so opening act blew us away so much we were in shock. I mean, they even did All Along The Watchtower, a la the Hendrix way .... We just stared at each other for a few and somehow uttered "what the heck was that - who are those guys???" We were so discombobulated we had to gather our composure to see who we came there for - the Fab T-Birds. Fast forward to Jazz Fest in New Orleans a few years later. By then SRV was a super star and knocked out of the park. I still can vividly see his set at the Fest. Then during the Fest week, also saw them on the Riverboat that was so popular in N.O. at the time. Some called it the best bar in town. So, anyhow, it was inside, smallish, intimate and they once again were too mesmerizing. I am so happy I got to see him live 3 times! Learnning about his death was one of those experiences I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing. Headed down to a prime fishing area at my parents' house on the lake in Guntersville, AL and heard on the radio. Devastating. Ruined the fun for the day - sitting on the dock fishing and mourning.
SRV baby! I caught him 5 times, each one better than the other. There is no better blues guitarist. The groove is great. Double Trouble always did a fine job backing him up.
As good as SRV is to listen to, it's not until you watch him play that you get the full SRV experience.

With Stevie Ray Vaughn it's always better to watch the live versions if you can. You can see as well as feel the intensity in his playing.
Eric Clapton caught a Stevie show in the early days and was amazed that he never got lost in a solo. Amazed at the fluid nature of his playing.
Stevie live is always the best option. Riviera Paradise being the one lone exception. IMHO. You gotta do Lenny and Little Wing next if you haven’t. Stevie’s catalog of insanely good songs is massive. Dude was the GOAT, also IMHO....
my favorite comment of all time about Texas Flood Live at the El Mocambo is that it's an encyclopedia of Electric Blues guitar, couldn't agree more!!!
It's all about the feel boys...SRV has it. Watch him play some blues with Albert King and see two generations melt into one powerful blues performance.
Eric Clapton said that SRV was like an open channel and that if he watched him for too long he would start feeling insecure about his own talent. There's a video out there somewhere, I can't remember where it takes place, where SRV is doing almost an entire Jimi behind his back and singing as well. At the end, he just walks over to his amp, turns everything off, turns back to the audience, shrugs his shoulders and walks off stage laughing. Incredible.
Watching your faces was priceless! I had many chances to see Stevie Ray live in my hometown, but like an idiot I didn't and will regret it for the rest of my life. You can tell that Jimi was a huge influence. btw, have you guys ever heard the Hendrix albums Axis Bold As Love or Electric Ladyland? If you haven't, you need to! I have many favorite guitarists, but Jimi, SRV, Page and Gilmour are my absolute faves. Thanks for doing this!

People don't understand just how good he is he used to break guitar strings all the time so you started using very heavy guitar strings I've heard his e-string was as high as 16 gauge do you realize how strong your fingers have to be to bend and manipulate streams that heavy? People that knew him said his hands were freakishly huge and strong if you watch his videos closely you can tell he's bending up to three strings at a time! I can't stress enough how impressive he is most guitars if not all if they were to pick up his guitar they would never be able to play it like him.
And he was a slight build guy, maybe 5’6 and very thin-but with extremely strong hands

It's obvious people can tell he was a great guitar player but I don't think they understand just how special he was
Let's not start mystical rumors......in his prime his string gauges were 13 15 19 28 38 60....and he tuned down a half step to Eb which helps with heavy gauge strings .......and these are heavy no doubt....he was a beast. It's one thing to play one song maybe with this intensity......he played the whole set ...every song with this intensity. No one in my opinion has matched it since.
Since both of you are big fans of Stevie, you NEED to check out Jeff Healey. They were good friends and Stevie said he loved playing with Jeff because he was the only one who could keep up with him. Jeff was a Canadian guitarist who died of cancer in 2008 (41). Also, Jeff is blind and plays the guitar flat on his lap!!!

I was so lucky to see SRV live and I was utterly blown away. The feel in those hands is almost unparalleled in electric blues. And yes, I felt like going home and throwing my Strat in the garbage....
Guys it's great that you're exploring this stuff. The entire "Live at the El Mocambo" performance was a complete masterpiece. "Texas Flood" and "Lenny" are my personal faves from that concert.
Seeing him play live and up close was an experience like none other. Before he hit it big I talked a friend into going to see him with me. Almost 35 years later he still thanks me every time I see him.

SRV was a very special cat that had a direct connection to the original group of electric bluesmen. Going forward blues will just not be the same. Just be glad we have those cats recorded on audio and video to continue to enjoy in 2019 and beyond. It's good to see some young cats connecting to SRV.
Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan are my top two favorite guitarists. To this day, I don't think I've heard a bad song or performance from either player. Two that have influenced too many guitarists to name and nobody have come close yet.

Your're right about Stevie's live performances being the way to go. Nothing wrong with his studio recordings they're great, but when he was playing live it was a whole other level. The musicians who are even better live are a special breed.

You guys are spot on about SRV. He's also my fave all time guitarist, and being an old dude I saw him twice, once in '84 and again in '86. I was supposed to see him in '87 but it was cancelled when he got injured in Europe when he fell off the stage, I'm sure partially due to inebriation as it was before he cleaned up. He may not be the best, but he's light years ahead of whoever #2 is. There is SRV, and then there's everyone else. :-)
Stevie Ray was amazing live! Not only was he one of the best guitarists ever, he was kind man with a sweet soul. The world definitely lost out when he died.
What continually blows my mind is, THIS IS A LIVE PERFORMANCE. His clean playing, the virtuosity, and behind his back...WTF!!!!!!!!

Loved your reactions and love me some SRV. His live shows are pretty incredible. He does a wonderful cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”. The best version of it is probably the live version of his performance at the El Mocambo. I would enjoy seeing you react to it. Thanks for brightening my day!

And just to make you jealous, I saw SRV Live in Regina, Canada from the front row of an acoustically perfect theatre. He had sooo many guitars on stands on stage, like selecting from a candy store, and he played them all. He BOUNCED his guitar up and down off the stage holding it by the whammy bar during VooDoo Chile! I'm sure he WOULD have set the guitar on Fire at some point...except that had already been done (RIP JIMI H.)
Stevie and Page are my two favorite guitarist. SRV could just make that guitar sing. I've regretted that I have never seen him live. I will never forget the day they announced his passing, my heart just sunk. I always thought I had more time to go see him live. I live near Dallas Texas, and I keep telling myself at least I can go and pay my respect at grave site. I really need to do that may he RIP.
