Pearl Necklace and Arrested for Driving While Blind are two of the best ZZ Top songs. I don't believe they got a lot of air play, and that's unfortunate.

It's great to see young guys react well to 50 year old Texas blues. I've always loved this about "La Grange": the lyrics last for about 58 seconds and then the rest of the song is a vehicle for Billy Gibbons' blazing guitar skills.

A little Texas Boogie-Woogie never hurt anyone! With that said Billy Gibbons has to be one of if not the most underrated guitarist ever. He was Jimmy Hendrix favorite guitarist and once when Billy was done practicing with his original band The Moving Sidewalks Eric Clapton went up to Billy and shook his hand because he was impressed with his guitar playing. So if those two knew he was a phenomenal guitar player, it still boggles my mind why you never hear Billy's name when it comes to who are considered the best.
and when this album came out Tres Hombres, Mick Jagger loved it and hand picked ZZ Top to open a string of gigs in Hawaii for them. The band was stoked because they loved the Stones and never been to Hawaii, They said Mick would stand at the side of the stage in some disguise, fake beard and hat and watched them each show.
The Moving Sidewalk! When I was a teen they played a dance at the K.C. Hall in my podunk town North of New Orleans. They had a song 99th Floor. Years later I learned about Billy Gibbons. Another great reaction to a great song. Thanks, guys!
I've listened to this band for a long time, no formula music here. This "little ol' band from Texas" plays it all. Anyone who listens to their music appreciates their music.
@@roncypert8255 Billy Gibbons... making music to roll funny cigarettes by since 1969. No worries Ron, we love Texans in Oklahoma. That is until it is time to play college football.
Yes sir! I have plenty of great friends who are from Oklahoma and we engage in quite a bit of banter and trash talking during football season. I saw ZZ TOP in El Paso in November of 72 with Uriah Heep and Savoy Brown. ZZT opened and weren’t even listed on the bill but our campus radio station dj had gotten wind that they were set to open and I’d been wearing out Rio Grande Mud, so at that point in my life, it was a dream concert come true! Gibbons was wearing a pearl snap button down, jeans and boots, and a cowboy hat, clean shaven and looking like a 3 piece country band! By the time they finished their much too short set, we didn’t give a shit if the two British acts played or not!🤣 Of course that changed when they each came came on!! Even in the altered state I was experiencing, I remember it like it was yesterday. I have a tee shirt that says I May Be Old But I Got To See All The Cool Bands! Just one of many musical memories from my short stay at NMSU in Las Cruses, NM.
The opening vocals were actually a trick played on the band by Robin Hood Studios, they recorded the singer singing into the mic while he was tuning his amp and guitar and was talking low. Normally the opening was much higher. When they played the song back in the studio the producer said hey listen to the opening using this vocal. They were like that doesn’t sound right but they trusted the producer. Robin Hood Studios made this song the number hit it became. Hats off
20+ years ago my buddy & I had to drive from Galveston back to UT at Austin. We would stop for gas in La Grange at dark thirty morning. One time we saw three guys sitting around a table inside the gas station staring at a glass of motor oil. They said they were so bored they were betting, and daring each other to be the 1st to drink it! We explained "Boy. Boys, don't do that. LOL" On the return journey one of them was doing curls with car batteries, complete with acid burns on his arms. I guess working at an all night gas station wasn't too exciting. Thanks for the flashback.
fun fact......the drummer without the beard....his name in fact is......Frank Beard!!! lol Listen to their bluesy jam Waitin For The Bus/Jesus Left Chicago
"Old guy from Texas." LOL, Billy (at the time) was your age or younger. This was from the band's early years (1970's). They had a strong following but nowhere near what was to come. That "Little Ol' Band from Texas" didn't hit their commercial stride until the '80's (with the advent of videos) with hit after hit but many ZZ Top purists consider their earlier work to be the best (albeit, less commercial) They're still rockin' hard after 51 years and over 50 million albums sold.
ZZ Top is heavily motivated by a love of the blues and revel in blues licks influenced by some of the traditional masters. Here, Billy Gibbons is deliberately imitating the vocal style of John Lee Hooker. I would add that some of the older ZZ Top songs are some of the naughtiest rock and roll ever - songs like Pearl Necklace and Tube Snake Boogie.
I loved Brownsville Station and they use that phrase in one of their songs (phrase, boogie chillin'). 🌷 as a matter of fact the first concert I ever saw was in Tampa and it was ZZ Top and Brownsville Station opened up for them. 👍😎👍
A tribute....or just plagiarism? I understand a court said the latter! BTW, Boogie Chillen, from 1948, may well be the first rock song in history. Though I have seen excerpts of Sister Rosetta Tharp from, I believe, a decade earlier than that, that sound like rock to me.
@@thearab59 love all those artists you mentioned...one question...did bo diddley invent the bo diddley beat?....or is it older than that....music IS a continuum.....people getting their due is important too....should jimmie Johnson get more credit on chuck berry records?....did chess records use willie dixon's name to copywrite other blues artists material......music is still a continuum.....fair or unfair.....
@@raderke Per Wikipedia, the Bo Diddley beat or rhythm occurs in 13 rhythm and blues songs recorded between 1944 and 1955, including two by Johnny Otis from 1948. In 1952, a song with similar syncopation, "Hambone" was recorded by Red Saunders' Orchestra with the Hambone Kids. In 1944, "Rum and Coca Cola", containing the beat, was recorded by the Andrews Sisters. So Bo popularised it but didn't invent it. It's not enough to copyright anyway (as the good outcome to the Stairway to Heaven case would also suggest - Randy never sued in his lifetime, he knew).
You'll probably never read this, since the video is three years old, but I actually once (in the 70s) went to a "La Grange party," where they just played this song over and over and over, and people danced all night long and loved it, had a great time....just like Andy said, "....like the party's just starting..."
Two great facts about ZZ Top, 1) You've got two guys with really longs beards. The drummer, who doesn't have a beard, is named Frank Beard. 2) Jimi Hendrix once said that Billy Gibbons was the best guitar player he ever saw.

This is classic ZZ Top, Im am personally a fan of the earlier stuff like El Loco, Tes Hombres, Fandango, Deguello. Then Eliminator came out and they went full MTV, and made a ton of money in the process. But I much prefer the earlier stuff. So Party on the Patio, Hear It On the X, Jesus Done Left Chicago, Tush... Aside from ZZ, for a mind-blowing quintessential classic rock experience that Ive been recommending since forever, check out Do You Feel Like We Do, Peter Frampton, Frampton Comes Alive. You will not be disappointed. For a "grab you buy the skull and pound your brain high intensity Tool experience check out Hooker With A Penis. See also Ticks & Leeches. For one of the greatest bands of the grunge era check out Alice In Chains - Would, Them Bones, Love Hate Love, Rain When I Die, I Stay Away. Other great bands you should put on your list: The Black Crows - Remedy, Sting Me, either good place to start. The whole Southern Harmony album is pretty fantastic. Jane's Addiction - Three Days, Ted Just Admit It, Mountain Song, Jane Says, Summertime Rolls. Anything off Nothing Shocking really, its one of those every song is great albums. See also Dirt by Alice in Chains, great great album.
True story - I worked for a rental car company in Austin in 1989 and Billy Gibbons from ZZ Top would come to my counter to rent a car from me once a week. It got to the point where he would stand at the counter and just shoot the shit for an hour each time. If you have ever watched any of the ZZ Top videos, they always have a classic restored car in it. All of those cars were his that he restored and one time he actually brought his photo album of all of his restored cars to the rental car counter to show with me. He became such a fixture in my work life that I felt stupid to ask for his autograph. Then one day I remembered that he had to sign his rental agreements contract every time he rented a car so I took one of the signed copies. I still have it in a shoebox in my closet along with my memories of befriending a famous rocker for a year when I was in my 20’s. Side note - most people know the band members of ZZ Top are famous for their long beards. In order to stay incognito, Billy would roll his up and pin it with Bobby pins so no one would recognize him. No one ever did!
A lot of people are going to recommend their big hits from the 80's, but I'd stick to their early stuff like this one. More blues and less pop. Just Got Paid Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers Waiting on the Bus/Jesus Left Chicago Tush Cheap Sunglasses
RIP Dusty Hill! Saw you guys in '71 in Dallas: one of the best shows I've ever seen! Jimi, and Jim, and Janis, and Lowell will all be there to greet you!
Ir was good. Hard to believe they were 20 y.o. when they got started. All the suggestions for other tunes are good, but a favorite of mine from 'Eliminator' is 'I need you tonight.'
Great song, and probably their best! While you're on a southern rock/boogie rock kick, you have to do Molly Hatchet 'Flirtin With Disaster', or The Outlaws 'Green Grass & High Tides' (studio versions). Those 2 songs are Southern Rock classics and total 'guitarfest' bangers! Cheers!
you have never heard la grange til teenage you hears your mother singing 'how how how how' in the kitchen......we're talking someone raised on broadway musicals and frank sinatra. loved it!
On second thought, the video of them playing “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” live from Germany, 1980 is an almost perfect demonstration of them at their lil old band from Texas peak. It was just a couple of years before Eliminator and you can truly appreciate their musicianship, not just the girls and cars.... BFG can play that goddamn guitar!
I wanted to include the lyrics, just so you know. He's talking about a brothel. Lyrics Rumour spreadin' 'round In that Texas town About that shack outside La Grange And you know what I'm talkin' about Just let me know if you wanna go To that home out on the range They got a lot of nice girls Have mercy A haw, haw, haw, haw, a haw A haw, haw, haw Well, I hear it's fine If you got the time And the ten to get yourself in A hmm, hmm And I hear it's tight Most ev'ry night But now I might be mistaken Hmm, hmm, hmm Have mercy
And based on a real brothel near La Grange which after a brouhaha with a Houston TV crusader reporter later became the inspiration for the good stage musical (but bad movie) The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
Bluesman John Lee Hooker made the guttural "how how how" vocals famous. ZZ Top pays tribute to him on this tune. The guitar solos win it for me though. That tone is bliss.
Great reaction to ZZ Top! Living in Austin, La Grange is about an hour and 15 minutes east of here. This is definitely their most famous song, but their biggest commercial success came with the advent of MTV. ZZ Top's videos were among the most popular on MTV with heavy rotation. I recommend reacting to "Tush".
The part about the old cowboy polishing a gun telling you the story in a low voice! That is so spot on!! Great analysis and love watching you guys experience ZZ top for the first time.
Imagine 3 teens (who just had a "mushroom" pizza) in the front row of a 1970s ZZ Top concert. The show starts and on each side of the stage rises cages with buzzards, snakes and live buffalo..and they start this song, we lost our minds! We asked each other in the car on the way home.. did you see those buffalo or was it the "pizza" :-)
Grew up listening to ZZ Top, they put on one of the longest and best concerts I've seen. They are one of the biggest bands with many hit songs. They still tour. Anyone who hasen't seen them in concert live you should go you won't regret it. An early one not many people have heard is Burger man, Rough boy is good an kinda shows a little bit different style.
"Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" On the list of 70's Kegger Anthems Honorable mentions Rock Candy Montrose , One of These Nights Eagles, and of course your Frampton, Led Zeppelin,Boston , Skynyrd, Deep Purple . Sweet Times and memories ain't nothing like a 70's kegger with a little Acapulco Gold , Maui Wowie , Thai Stick and Hot Chicks in Tube tops and Denim Shorts.
This was right before MTV made them famous. When Jimi Hendricks was asked who he thought was a he best guitarist at the time. He said Billy Gibbens of ZZ Top
Those songs are great, but you'll notice they got a little more formulaic/radio-friendly in the early eighties. Their seventies material is definitely more on the "WTF? that is so unique, funky, groovy..." side. Try "Just Got Paid" or "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" There is great live footage of them in 1980 at Rockpalast in Germany.

"I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide". One of the greatest titles ever- and an all-out BANGER.
That Lil ol' band from Texas. "Waitin' on the bus/Jesus just left Chicago" "I'm bad, I'm nationwide" "Mexican Blackbird", that'll do for now.
Mexican blackbird, yes, forgot about that one. Mega tune

3 piece.
It's great to see young guys react well to 50 year old Texas blues. I've always loved this about "La Grange": the lyrics last for about 58 seconds and then the rest of the song is a vehicle for Billy Gibbons' blazing guitar skills.
The riff is based on an old Johnny Lee Hooker number, including the mumbled vocals from the old bluesman
A great example is from the Blues Brothers ua-cam.com/video/nUUyFrHERpU/v-deo.html
@@davidstealy8724 that's old maxwell street in chicago. part open air flea-market, part funky soul food (you haven't lived 'til you've had a maxwell st. polish sausage), part sidewalk blues and jazz into the wee hours of the night. special place. all gone now.
All Rock and Jazz music is based on riffs from old bluesmen, and their riffs are based on even older bluesmen.
When the song let loose, my 1972 SS 454 Chevelle took off sideways down the street!
cool, my brother had a Chevelle Supersport
Doug I hear you dude Chevelle’s best rock and roll cars!
My 69 Mach1 did the same thing!
This was far from their biggest commercial success(sharp dressed man, she's got legs) but it's definitely the most memorable!
It was actually a million-seller.
Yeah, for me, La Grange is the deal.
E. James Shepard Here we go again with another “underrated” comment.
and when this album came out Tres Hombres, Mick Jagger loved it and hand picked ZZ Top to open a string of gigs in Hawaii for them.
You did it. You found the coolest song of all time.
Yes sir, u can't not be cool while his is blaring
Many cooler ZZ Top songs, although it is good.
Tush is cooler.
That look you get on your face when you realize Billy Gibbons has more soul in his left pinky than most other musicians do in their whole body.
The Reverend Billy G!
Nuff said.
They should do Waitin On The Bus/Jesus Just left Chicago...
That’ll blow your dress up!
Yeah, I’m from Texas!😂
By the time they finished their much too short set, we didn’t give a shit if the two British acts played or not!🤣
Of course that changed when they each came came on!!
Even in the altered state I was experiencing, I remember it like it was yesterday.
I have a tee shirt that says

Just one of many musical memories from my short stay at NMSU in Las Cruses, NM.
@@roncypert8255 Nice, good memories. Thanks for sharing.
I agree with “Bus/Jesus”. Cool fact. Billy Gibbons has a guitar made out of floorboards from Muddy Waters’s plantation shack.
“Tush” is a MUST for your next ZZTop song.
I refuse to believe there's anyone in the western hemisphere who's never heard this song before.
Nod your head and pretend you’ve never heard songs they play at literally every sporting venue. Pow. UA-cam gold.
They said they've heard the beginning rift before in a commercial or something similar. I see so people don't pay attention and just want to bitch.
There's always a first time for everything. 😎
Everyone has heard the guitar from movies not the whole song.
I am the Walrus
That "old guy" singing was 23 years old at the time
right
Exactly
And the song got better as he aged.
😳🤯 23 holly hell
I was thinking the same thing! 😂
" Cheap Sunglasses " ))) Gibbons was One Of Jimi Hendrix's Favorite Guitarists... =)
Hats off
Hello from T town. Lots of musicians have recorded here at Robinhood Brian's studio.
I live in La Grange, TX. so I'm so glad you all finally did this song! Maybe try ZZ Top's " I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide " next.
I always thought the opening riff on La Grange was very similar to Shake Your Hips by Slim Harpo or the Stones
Well, La Grange was about a whorehouse.
I know a gal she lives on the hill
she won't do it but her sister will
she do the boogie
the tube steak boogie
Tush.
Just got Paid.
I'm bad I'm Nationwide..NEXT SONGS🎸😎
Kelli Erin Agreed. I’m Bad I’m Nationwide!

Sharp dressed man and I gotsta get paid

The vocals are a throw down to John Lee Hooker and a song called "Boogie Chillen", you gotta check it out.
Also, the guitar lick too....
I thought the same thing too. It's VERY traditional!
I loved Brownsville Station and they use that phrase in one of their songs (phrase, boogie chillin'). 🌷 as a matter of fact the first concert I ever saw was in Tampa and it was ZZ Top and Brownsville Station opened up for them. 👍😎👍
OMG I can't believe you are just now hearing this. One of my personal faves.
This song is a loving tribute to John Lee Hooker.
Check out ‘Boogie Chillen’ & ‘Boom boom boom’.
Rock is a continuum.
truth
@@thearab59 maybe that bo diddley beat goes back before recorded music...just saying?
If this is your first experience with ZZ Top, you have a lot to learn.
I never EVER in my life thought I would be able to watch someone experience "La Grange" for the first time. Love you guys.
Try ZZ Top's "Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago." It is better if you listen to both at once.
You'll probably never read this, since the video is three years old, but I actually once (in the 70s) went to a "La Grange party," where they just played this song over and over and over, and people danced all night long and loved it, had a great time....just like Andy said, "....like the party's just starting..."
Excellent choice guys. Another good one is "I'm Bad, I'm Nationwide" It has great transitions and mix of rhythms.
I’m bad, I’m nationwide kinda falls into a pocket between old and new ZZ, awesome tune!
Two great facts about ZZ Top, 1) You've got two guys with really longs beards. The drummer, who doesn't have a beard, is named Frank Beard. 2) Jimi Hendrix once said that Billy Gibbons was the best guitar player he ever saw.
@parallax3d Billy Gibbons band, The Moving Sidewalks, opened for Hendrix.
Check out ZZ Top's "Tush"!
"I'm just looking for some tush!"
Let me not forget "Pearl Necklace"!
Yes. Tush!!!!
When I first heard it, I didn't know the name of the song, thought it was "Touch" - because I know how "tush" is pronounced and it's not like that ;-)

@Jim lastname And have Hendrix call you his favorite new guitarist on The Tonight Show

A little known fact, he was born with that beard.
Them boys put out a lot of great sound. With three boys from Texas!
Only guy without a beard is the drummer...Frank Beard
I thought I was the only one to appreciate that hilarious bit of irony! :-D
Frank has sported a goatee at various times, but nothing that begins to compare with the other 2 band members.
Best running joke in the history of rock music.
In the beginning Frank beard had a beard, dusty and billy did not 🍻🇺🇸
Yeah, I recall seeming them in Seattle opening for Leon Russell in ‘72. I don’t think they had beards and we’re dressed kinda western, they blew the roof off the coliseum.
Blue Jeans Blues gives you a taste of the early years of the band.
Dudes zz was the 2nd concert I ever went to in the late 70's. I was blown away. I was amazed at how tight they performed live. Btw the tapping is called rim shots, playing on the rim of the drums. Alright, potential play list some of my personal favs. are Velcro Fly, Slip inside my sleeping bag, Legs, and Tubesnake boogie.
Nope, that's not a "rim shot". A rimshit(!) is when you hit the rim and the head at the same time with the stick.
just got paid today, Waiting for the bus/ Jesus just left Chicago, Tush, I'm bad!
“Just got paid” is my favorite by them. Awesome groove and the bass is legit.
They weren't old when they recorded this Lp. They were in their 20s
They were born old.

Okay, here ya go: ZZ Top: "Tube Snake Boogie"
I think "Tush" or "Cheap Sunglasses" would be a good follow-ups to this reaction; another classics from ZZ.
About the "Chicken Ranch" bordello in La Grange, TX. The play (and movie) "The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas" was about this as well.
Other great bands you should put on your list:
The Black Crows - Remedy, Sting Me, either good place to start.
"Jesus Just Left Chicago," not your typical Top 40 hit song but one that defines the group.
Love the earlier ZZ. They became more popular in the 80's with Eliminator etc, but that material is not a patch on this!
Eliminator is a great album, but those OG albums are masterful
A lot of people are going to recommend their big hits from the 80's, but I'd stick to their early stuff like this one. More blues and less pop.

Ir was good. Hard to believe they were 20 y.o. when they got started. All the suggestions for other tunes are good, but a favorite of mine from 'Eliminator' is 'I need you tonight.'
I know when you see Billy gibbons from 1968 without a beard and everything it's crazy Jimi Hendrix

I'll def check it out. Thanks for the tip 👍
The vocals draw a straight line from John Lee Hooker. “Haw haw haw” is John Lee’s signature.
Early ZZ TOP is some of the best Texas/Country Blues you'll ever hear. Fifty years and going strong. Love'em.
And same lineup!
Cheers!
Agreed. Flirtin' With Disaster is a MUST
Great song by Molly Hatchet!!
Flirtin' with Disaster is a banger! Dreams I'll Never See is another great Molly Hatchet song.
you have never heard la grange til teenage you hears your mother singing 'how how how how' in the kitchen......we're talking someone raised on broadway musicals and frank sinatra. loved it!
BILLY MF GIBBONS! “Waiting for the Bus/Jesus Just Left Chicago” hands down, no other option next
ZZ Top! Thank you!
I wanted to include the lyrics, just so you know. He's talking about a brothel.
Lyrics
Rumour spreadin' 'round
In that Texas town
About that shack outside La Grange
And you know what I'm talkin' about
Just let me know if you wanna go
To that home out on the range
They got a lot of nice girls
Have mercy
A haw, haw, haw, haw, a haw
A haw, haw, haw
Well, I hear it's fine
If you got the time
And the ten to get yourself in
A hmm, hmm
And I hear it's tight
Most ev'ry night
But now I might be mistaken
Hmm, hmm, hmm
Have mercy
And based on a real brothel near La Grange which after a brouhaha with a Houston TV crusader reporter later became the inspiration for the good stage musical (but bad movie) The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.
"Rough Boy" is one of my favorites from ZZ Top. I think you'd dig it. Do it for all of us self-quarantined, music-thirsty viewers.
I can’t imagine going thru life without enjoying an ample amount of ZZ Top. I’m glad you finally got to experience it.
Dave’s Outdoor Stuff RIGHT?
The part about the old cowboy polishing a gun telling you the story in a low voice! That is so spot on!! Great analysis and love watching you guys experience ZZ top for the first time.
Yes, and I think that it would be great for this song to be given Ramin Djawadi’s treatment in the series “Westworld”.
SHROOMS AND BUFFALO...BUFFALO AND SHROOMS! HAVE MERCY!!

Nice reaction guys. I think “ I might be mistaken” but I think Hendrix said that Billy Gibbons was one of his favorite guitarists so that’s dope.
Yes he did!
"Have mercy!" ZZ Top is straight up rock & roll. Still going to put in my plug for you guys to do "Flirtin' with Disaster" by Molly Hatchet.

Flirtin' With Disaster by Molly Hatchet. Great southern rock.
And "Dreams I'll Never See" and the jam "Fall of the Peacemakers".

Try Joe Bonamassa’s interpretation of Just got Paid at the Royal Albert hall. Nuts!
"Jesus Just Left Chicago" for real!
"Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" will be right up your alley, "Just Got Paid" is another old school ZZ Top classic
I saw them live twice back in the mid-seventies. Holy cow, what a show.
I concur
"Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" On the list of 70's Kegger Anthems Honorable mentions Rock Candy Montrose , One of These Nights Eagles, and of course your Frampton, Led Zeppelin,Boston , Skynyrd, Deep Purple . This is John Lee Hooker. I like what they do with it.
Next should be "Heard it on the X" a straight 2:25 banger. " Cheap Sunglasses" would be a good choice also.
You can't go wrong with those being your next two picks!
This was right before MTV made them famous. When Jimi Hendricks was asked who he thought was a he best guitarist at the time. He said Billy Gibbens of ZZ Top
"Legs"
