I don't believe nowadays, in the 21st Century, that ANYONE could play GUITAR the way STEVIE RAY VAUGHN DID AND COULD. HE HAD, FOR ONE THING, INCREDIBLY STRONG HANDS. He had the Imagination and Tenacity to Soar Above the Clouds into Deepest and Highest Outer Space. He HAD NO LIMITS. NONE. HE DIDN'T LIMIT HIMSELF. HE SOARED.
All my life I've been a Hendrix nut, and one day my friend John Fox called me over to listen to this new guy Steve Ray Von on his outrageous Quad stereo. At that time there were several good guitar players trying to fill Hendrix void, but they just didn't cut it... So my friend John qued up SRV Texas flood and cranked it till the roof about came off the house... I WAS BLOWN AWAY! And afterwards for my Birthday he invited me to see SRV live at the Palladium in LA... Back then at the Palladium there was no seating, if you arrived early, you could stand next to the stage. So, I got to see this guitar god play for over an hour, and he never moved from the same spot. He smoked & sweated while he was playing this amazing music and drank what looked like straight vodka in between songs. It was an experience I will never forget the rest of my life.
Have you ever seen that video where Stevie breaks a string mid-song? His guitar tech brings him a new one and they swap it out without missing a beat and carry on with the song the whole time. Amazing!
I was at Stevie Ray Vaughn's last concert at Alpine Valley the night his helicopter crashed. The lineup was Eric Clapton, SRV, Robert Cray and Buddy Guy. I remember leaving the concert and saying to myself that I would never miss SRV if he was ever in my area again. Sadly I will never have that opportunity.
SRV used to play at a bar down the street from my home in Austin, Texas. One day, my girlfriend and I were riding a bike by the bar and stopped into for a cold Shiner beer. SRV was on stage with a host of bluesmen, including Buddy Guy. The barmaid said the bar was closed, but we begged for just one cold beer - it was hot as hell that day. She looked at Buddy, who nodded his head "yes." And we were treated to an hour of music by some of the greatest blues musicians of their day. Wow! We were so close to the stage, I could hear SRV's pick clicking on the strings. Magical. When Stevie played, you could imagine what it must have been like to see Jimi Hendrix back in the day. A force of nature, he was.

I was going to see Ray Charles at a Seattle Festival and SRV was first act. We had no clue who he was. We were blown away by his talent as well as his band. Ray Charles stood in the wings dancing and loving how Stevie made his guitar sing so beautifully. He crowd went wild! We paid $7.50 to see them. We bought tickets to his upcoming tour but sadly he passed before could. RIP SWEET SRV
I REALLY appreciate the way the guy in the middle admits that it's understandable how the older generation can say that music has degenerated from where it once was, and how everyone needs to see this particular video of Stevie. This is surely one of the greatest music performances ever captured on film! There's ALOT of Stevie's stuff on UA-cam and such---please check it out. NOBODY else played like he did! And he did it on a guitar that most other players couldn't physically handle because it had such heavy strings and high action. The way he played with utter physicality, feeling and technical virtuosity---along with that gritty, bluesy singing voice was mesmerizing. Moreover, he was a kind and humble man and a tremendous inspiration to many. Check out also some of the filmed interviews of him. My thanks to the guys who made this reaction video.
I agree with everything you've said and I also agree with everything the gentleman in the middle (Nick, I think his name is) said about music today. For that, he deserved my subscription to this channel. Stevie was a force to be reckoned with. Such a talent. They say that a star that burns twice as bright burns half as long and that was Stevie. Agree with everything you said. However, great music is still out there, you just have to search for it. It's definitely not played on the major stations for the most part. Search for it and support it locally, when possible. (covid)
As a blues aficionado and someone who lives in Texas, all I can say is when a blues legend, Eric Clapton says, “ he just channeled the blues” it’s not enough. When I fist saw him it was a the Montrose Blues Festival, he was the only performer without a recording contract. They booed him when he was announced and after his first song he slayed them. A couple other snippets from Eric Clapton (paraphrased): Eric said the first time he heard Stevie play he was driving down the highway and he had to pull over to the side so he could listen. He said he needed to know who it was playing immediately, that day, and that need to know had only happened to him two or three times EVER. (note: he may have said 3 - 4 times, but this is Slow Hand talking, so still) Eric also said that even the best guitarists (musicians?) get lost in the music, where they have to stop and figure out where they want to take the song next but that it never happened with Stevie (I believe this was part of the interview referenced above). That what Stevie was...he was MAGIC! 🤘😎
I’ve seen a lot of reactions to SRV on UA-cam and nobody has had the interpretation I’ve had of this song. I view the “flood” being his emotions of losing a lover and all the “telephone lines” being down is him dealing with the isolation of being alone. This song is so beautiful on a lyrical scale as well as SRV’s mastery of guitar.

I had waited about 6 years to see Stevie in concert. That day *finally* came. In the 10,000 seat arena, I was right in front of him. It was one of the happiest days of my life. His sweat was dripping on me the whole time. I didn't want the show to end. He was dead 2 weeks later. I still haven't gotten over it and never will. There are many amazing guitarists, equally as talented and skilled, but Stevie had something more...divine going on with him. He can do more than Texas blues, too. Check out Riviera Paradise for a more jazzy number. I am certain he could have done heavy metal had he wanted to. He's one of very few people who has ever been able to truly master their instrument. Think about the fact that he was getting hit songs on the radio doing *Texas blues* smack dab in the middle of the 80's techno pop, Madonna and Culture Club era! Thank you for the reaction and your reverence for this man's contribution to music. Keep the torch alive, brother. 🔥🎸😎
The guy in red says, "He can't see the guitar". He couldn't see it before. . .lol. . He had his eyes closed, "feeling it". That's Stevie. Been listening to him since the 80's. Nobody like him. . Ever. The best!
It really is like staring into the face of God. Stevie was, and always will be, a music god. Music and man become one. An awakening experience indeed. Spiritual. Thanks guys.
Stevie Ray's playing is just nasty sweet. Playing behind your back and not missing a beat is a WTF moment. I love the look on your faces. You can't believe what you are seeing but you know it's once-in-a-liftetime greatness. Notice you guys weren't saying anything during that period, just like the audience. That's why they were quiet; don't ruin a wow moment. Actually, the crowd was probably quiet for several reasons - they were likely told the concert/song was being recorded, they were in awe and they/we are Canadian, very respectful.
In my opinion the greatest guitar player ever. And yes, if he didn’t leave us so early, he would have only gotten better if that’s even possible. Playing behind me back, come on. Most guitar players can’t play this good with the guitar in front of them!
Stevie was the GOAT. Period. Know this too, he couldn't read sheet music, he just played from his heart and soul. So you think that was sweat oozing from his pores? Nope, it wasn't. It was soul. Pure soul. I cried like a baby when Stevie was killed, less than 30 miles from where I lived. ALL music, not just blues music is better because of you. RIP brother Stevie. Your greatness lives on forever.
I saw him at NY State Fair in 1986- an outdoor gig and a whole huge summer storm blew through during his gig. They paused the gig for a bit and a lot of the crowd left-we stayed! Best decision I ever made. Despite the rain and wind SRV came back out in his huge Native American head dress. We got right to the edge of the stage. Sounds weird, but I touched his boot as he blew through Testify. I just wanted to check to see if this cat was REAL! The sheer volume rattled my lungs! The playing- because they wanted him off the stage- was even faster than the album and spot on! 35 years later it still gets me emotional!
As incredible as his guitar playing was, Stevie's vocals were just out of this world. The blues literally just pour out of his body. And to think his high school music teacher told him he had no talent.....
I had the privilege of seeing SRV three times in the NYC area in the 80's. I am a blues aficionado, so when he just blew up, I HAD to see him every time I could. My friends and I almost got thrown out of the famed Radio City Music Hall for trying to dance in the aisles!!! He is the GOAT!

RIP Stevie Ray Vaughan. ❤🕊🙏
My mom loved bb king & stevie ray vaughan. we played her favorite song riviera paradise at her furneal a week ago,
God blessed us, with Stevie Ray, I watch ever so closely, his wonderful feel, he portrays, its, as if, he is literally, giving us a message, sharing, caring, giving, with every ,single, fiber in his body..I love his , wonderful, talent, most of all, I love the man himself, ever so quietly spoken, humble, kind, making us all happy , with hearts full of love🙏❤️..I firmly believe, he came to this earth on a special mission.. y'all, know what I mean..Our good lord, has taken him back, to his, heavenly home, to carry on the good work, elsewhere..Thankyou S.R.V. for inspiring me to do good..🙏❤️🎸
Just in case you have not heard it said before:
THOSE WHO CAN SING - SING
THOSE WHO CAN PLAY - PLAY
THOSE WHO CAN SING & PLAY - ARE STEVIE RAY!!
Damn, we loved gettin' high af, drinking whiskey and listening to the new SRV albums!!!!!
That dude was special
The guy in red says, "He can't see the guitar". He couldn't see it before. . .lol. . He had his eyes closed, "feeling it".
That's Stevie. Been listening to him since the 80's. Nobody like him. . Ever. The best!
Yes rip Stevie
This is one of the few times I love it when the video is stopped and discussed.
It really is like staring into the face of God. Stevie was, and always will be, a music god. Music and man become one. An awakening experience indeed. Spiritual. Thanks guys.
The greatest ever Dallas born lived in Austin RIP SRV WE MISS YOU
IMO the best blues guitar performance ever recorded. I saw him live twice and he was every bit as good. One of the true GOATS.
To Good for our planet.
Welcome to church, Rev Stevie is about to heal your soul !
Thank you !
Stevie+guitar=Genius...!
ALL OF THEM!!!! INCLUDING EVERYTHING THAT WE WERE LUCKY ENOUGH TO HAVE SOMEONE RECORD 'UNOFFICIALLY'!!!!
In my opinion the greatest guitar player ever. And yes, if he didn’t leave us so early, he would have only gotten better if that’s even possible. Playing behind me back, come on. Most guitar players can’t play this good with the guitar in front of them!
Words just can't do this performance justice...😳
Perfect reaction! You win!
The El Mocambo is a legendary Toronto bar. The Stones played there. They did a surprise gig and called themselves the Cockroaches.
He's a once in 500 year freak of artistic talent.
I was fortunate enough to see SRV live 3 times and even hyperbole truly fails to describe his brilliance. RIP Stevie.
♥ Neil Peart also. 20+ times! :)
I’m so sorry I didn’t get to see him live.
Me too I seem him in 85 wow it was. More than awesome.y friend.
Me too. I seen him in 85
I saw him at NY State Fair in 1986- an outdoor gig and a whole huge summer storm blew through during his gig.
John Mayer once described Stevie’s voice as “ Honey poured over gravel” that is the perfect explanation
That is music that will last forever
SRV was a GOAT of the blues guitar! RIP SRV you left an awesome impression. Love your reaction to this video, greatness. Stay safe. 🤙
Like I say & fondly, STV IS THE ONLY MAN ON EARTH THAT EVERY OTHER MAN FALLS MADLY IN LOVE WITH. When he plays I cry w such joy! Thank God for his short visit w us. God Bless ur Ass, Stevie! It was the saddest day the world cried. Same w Princess Di & Kobe. He died the same day his dad did 4 yrs earlier.
As a young Texas rock guitarist I thought I wanted to be Billy Gibbons when I grew up but - Then I saw SRV.
One of the biggest rock and blues musicians of all time. Musical genius all the way.
As a native TEXAN we r "very" proud of SRV !!! May he RIP !!! Miss him ALOT too !! 🥰
No auto tune, no over production, no dancers, no twerking, no scuzzy costumes. Only authentic hard earned talent.
Classic Texas Blues
Wait till you see life with out you at central theater in New Jersey 1985, he changes guitars, lost a tooth , and turned amps while playing the best song I have ever heard
What I would have given to be there to witness this gig. Fantastic!
SRV was incredible on that guitar… wasn’t he?! 😂Fantastic!!! 🥰❤️
Stevie ray was a badass
I saw SRV 5 times it was not enough. Miss him so much
He was just livin’ life by the drop.
Dude could manhandle those Mooring cable sized guitar strings! The greatest to ever do it!
