    Thank you! I have clowesia rosea and this one witch craft and they gave me the smallest psbulbs ever! I really believe was because I used clay pots instead of plastic pots so the water would evaporate really quickly, this year I pretend to do, what you did with yours! :)

      Clay does dry very fast and you have to water more often. Happy Growing, hope they do well for you!

    Thanks for posting this video. I've had mine less than a year and it's bloomed twice (once in Summer and once in Fall). I've moved somewhere that gets the occasional winter frost and it was looking bad. I brought it in an decided to divide it and remove the one bulb that looks like it may not recover, as well as replace the medium with somethingmore suitable for a Winter indoors. I was looking for a video on root pruning and you absolutely answered my question. You're right, they do what they want. I think all orchids do whatever feels right to them. Thanks for sharing information with all the other orchid groers out there.

      So glad this was helpful. I made the video because I had doubts cutting the roots off myself, so I wanted to show proof that it's ok. Happy Growing 💗

    OMG you must have read my mind. Earlier today, I noticed that one of my Catasetums was growing a new shoot. I had no idea if it was normal or what to do? Now I know🤗. Thank you so very much for sharing😍

      You're very welcome! They do what they want 😂😂 You'll need to repot soon!

    This one seems to do what ever it wants. My Mon. Millennium Magic Witchcraft had short brake and didn't even loose all it's leaves when it started pushing new roots. Of course, when I was visiting my mom and missed the repotting window.
    My Black Pearl haven't even tought off shedding leaves yet, but I've started easing off the watering.

      It really does! Mine is about to bloom again soon, no rest in one year! Hopefully it'll take a breather after the blooms are done!

    Beautiful catasetum 😍 I’m also trying the slow release fertiliser this year. Can never feed and water them enough when they’re growing 😅. My Clowesia Rebecca Northen just came out of dormancy (transitioning from Northern to Southern Hemisphere) so we’ll see what happens. Thanks for the great tips 😊🙏

    I received a plant that I think looks like a catasetum in a mystery box I ordered about a year ago , I t seems to be a flower spike forming , however the leaves never dropped.🤔

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому

      These Catasetums really do what they want! I kept watering this because the large 3rd growth is promising. You also might want to keep watering because of that flower spike, but when it's done flowering, you can gradually start tapering the water off to give it a break. Let me know how it goes!

    Very interesting and informative video, thanks for sharing. Can you please do same for a ccycnoches if you have one. Mine is dormant now but there is a patch of brown and soft tissue which I'm sure it's a rot but I haven't cut it off. Do you think I should cut that bit?

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому +1

      Cycnoches are much tougher to grow. I actually asked Stephen Van Campen Lewis to make a video and he did! Check it out! I learned from him after killing one. Lol. I'll try to make a video of my mistakes, but I'll say that one gives me trouble.
      Without seeing the orchid spots it's hard to say if it should be cut off. If it's near the top of the bulb I say go for it, but if it's at the base, it could be problematic and spread. Thanks for watching!

    Nicole, in Stevens video he used cypress mulch....as he said in the wild they grow on dead or dying wood and leaves.
    I just bought a Millennium Magic Witchcraft.
    What media should I use. I live west of Seattle. I grow under lights in a window. Temps are 69 to 79 now and much warmer in summer. My humidity is between 50-70% I leave a fan on when home.
    Please give me media recommendations...it's a 2 bulb division
    Thanks

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  Рік тому +1

      I like Moss. I would use that because your division is small, it's a thirsty plant, and the pot is going to be small and dry out quickly anyway. Perhaps when it's much larger you can use a mixture of moss and bark, but for now, I would personally just use Moss given how well it retains moisture.

  • @hithanks1

    My Witchcraft didnt really go dormant either, and now I have this huge new growth. I am wondering if its going to be as healthy, I never got to repot it and the moss is looking BAD. T__T;;

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому

      These complex Catasetum hybrids really love to do their own thing!! You can force dormancy now by gradually reducing the water slowly till you stop watering, then repotting when a new growth shows up. I'm keeping this one going because the growth is so big I'm hoping for more blooms. I don't think it'll be as big as the original growth though, but we'll see! Last year it only had a few weeks of dormancy. Keep me posted on how it does!

  • @kenjiro2676

    I probably missed this, but when they go dormant, do their roots die? When you remove the roots, are they dry husks or still fleshy?

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому +1

      Some of the roots actually remain alive. Some dry off, but I was surprised to see fleshy viable roots. Some folks just up pot their Catasetums and keep the roots that are alive. Eventually those roots do die as the new ones comes in which is why I just cut them all off. It's ok to keep them though!

    Thanks for the update! I'd like to add a couple of catasetum to my collection. Like you, I'm in New York City. When do you suggest purchasing one? And which nursery/nurseries do you prefer to purchase your catasetums from?

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому +1

      Thanks for watching! I like Sunset Valley orchids Catasetums. They usually release new ones in the spring. Spring is a good time to get them as they are growing then. If you buy them in winter, that's ok too, but many will be dormant and not grow for a few months.

  • @michaelmccarthy4077
    @michaelmccarthy4077 3 роки тому +1

    Are there spider mites on that growth? The underside of the leaves looks a bit mitey to me.
    It may not ever go fully dormant for you since it gets pretty consistent warmth and light. Most of them are keyed to go dormant with a drop in precipitation and somewhat shorter days in the wild. Now, it has been so warm here all winter (that is coming to a hard end this week though 🥶) that some of mine have already broken new growth.

    • @NicoleDeanna

      It had thrips several times. I rinsed it right before recording to get them off and treated it with a systemic right after and they are gone now, but the damage is definitely visible. You have a good eye. The Catasetums were the main attraction of the thrips in my collection, along with the Dendrobiums near it. I'm glad it's under control now! I forced dormancy on it last year and it didn't last very long, just a few weeks. I'm continuing to water hoping for buds again 🤞 I hope you're well, and staying warm. On Monday it was 16 degrees here. Today it's in the 20s, I hate it lol.

      @@NicoleDeanna it is "warm" for now. I'm not looking forward to next week, Tuesday the high will be 67, low of 48, Wednesday they're saying 62 with a low of 43. Too cold for me. (and of course I have several plants spiking earlier than normal so I pray the buds don't get wrecked)

    Hi Nicole, I stopped your video for a second to look at my catasetums and I found one with a growth !! This is January 14 ! Did I see 4inch pot then a 5inch one ? Did you repot it midway during its growing period ? I would think that a 5inch pot is best for a catasetum right from the start because they are big. Mine are potted using the PET method with a water reservoir and hangers, they have done well using that method. Thanks Nicole.

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  3 роки тому

      So exciting! Catasetums truly do whatever they want! You'll need to repot yours soon 🎉 I didn't repot it midway, it was in the same pot, but the bulbs are so large it makes the pot look small. I'll probably put it in a 6" pot this year. Hope all is well 🤠

    Hallo! Ich verstehe etwas nicht.... Wenn man das Catasetum umtopft in feuchtes Sphagnum, gehen dann die neues kleinen Wurzeln nicht ein? Man soll es doch erst noch nicht gießen!? Lässt du es wieder abtrocknen oder hälst du es dann die ganze Zeit feucht? Muss man gießen oder tauchen? Liebe Grüße

    • @NicoleDeanna
      @NicoleDeanna  6 місяців тому

      Hallo, danke für Ihre Frage! Das Moos ist nur ein kleines bisschen feucht, denn nur so wird es biegsam. Ich gieße es erst, wenn die Wurzeln lang genug für Wasser sind. Kurz gesagt: Wenn ich es umtopfe, ist das Moos kaum feucht (ich würde sagen, es ist zu 90 % trocken, gerade genug, um es einzutopfen). Ich lasse es vollständig trocknen und gieße es in etwa einem Monat, wenn die Wurzeln lang genug gewachsen sind, um Wasser aufzunehmen :)

    im thinking why your previous flowers are not so showy as other vids ive come to watched so far, i think its because the blooms are female ,which means it receives a higher lights, male blooms are induced from less light and they were more showier than female ones

      @NicoleDeanna  2 роки тому

      Interesting, thanks for watching and sharing that insight! I always wondered why the blooms were so wonky looking. Its in spike now and the buds look much more fuller than before, I hope the blooms are nicer this time, I'll make an update on the monthly bloom updates, it should be open by then!
