1:30 I have always heard that orchids that are in a rest period should not be watered, they even say that in nature they do not receive any type of rain because they "rot". This is not the case, you forget that, in nature, all orchids receive a daily humid bath from the dew that forms during the night when the temperature drops and the ambient humidity condenses. And this is more significant in the jungle and cloud forests.
Thank you for this informational video - i love that you have different pictures of the stages of their growth pattern - I have my first catasetum that what i learned here will be very helpful. Thank you.
This is a great video! I was afraid of adding CTS to my collection, but now thanks to this I might just give it a try. Glad that Astrid told you about your Channel, look forward to seeing more.
Wowwww! This is going to help me so much, now that I have 3 new Catasetums. I may bother you once spring comes about how much water to give it and how often and also when to and what to fertilize with once it’s ready for that. Other than my questions you did an amazing job in this video and I am so happy I met you at Tamiami😊🌸 Talk to you soon!
🍃It was such an honor to meet you in Tamiami! If you have any questions what's so ever, feel free to ask. 😃 I Hope to see you again at Redland 2019! Good Luck with your first catasetums, Woot Woot! 🍃😁
Now I understand what was wrong with my catasetum's growth rythm. I started watering too early and then welcome rot, non develloping roots, etc...so thanks. :)
This video really helped me to learn when to water my catesedums! I hope that you’ll do more of them on how you repot and their care during the growing season. Thank you for sharing!
I realize this is an older video, but I am just seeing it today. I am wondering, how do you know when to decrease or stop watering and fertilizing altogether? Thank you for your response!
I’ve been very interested in getting one since January.. I was at the Redland show but I was so overwhelmed I didn’t get a chance to go by your booth.. I started following you because of orchid diva
Don't worry, I was overwhelmed at the Redland show too! Hopefully Next year you can stop by! Thanks for following my channel! New video coming very soon! :)
Hey man, your video was so helpful. I’ve been watching my catasetum for a while to see if I can water it yet . It’s close, but not there yet. Thanks for the video.
I have a catasetum frilly dorris. It just sprouted a new growth but it’s pseudobulbs are extremely shriveled and the larger is shrunken at base, and no there is not any rot. It’s in extremely dry conditions due to an Orchid pot... I did not water a lot I just lightly moistened the moss... was that the right thing to do? I have another who is not shriveled as it’s a much larger plant. It also has a good new growth and I just Potted it in a slightly larger pot... he’s growing new roots and I don’t plan on giving him water until you said... however tell me if I did the right thing with the smaller one... thanks.
Hello, what kind of catasetum is in the very beginning of this video starting at 17 seconds of this video? It is so beautiful and I only have one catasetum that I just got this summer, go thank you so much for this content. And I have one last question, I tend to go overboard and buy every orchid I see when I discover a new favorite (like catasetum). I have learned to wait because I end up finding out that there are others of this new kind that are much more to my liking. So can you tell me the names of a couple of your favorites? I would so appreciate it! And thank you in advance!
Hello Sir. I have a seedling of Catasetum Black Magic, and I technically leave it growing outdoor under a tree with some good wind and some indirect sunlight. However, at some point, all four of the leaves looks weirdly yellow with some black spots. So I cut them off. It has been nearly two months now and I kept it moist. No new shoots at the moment. Shall I stop watering and let it dry until a new growth emerge? I grow it with a mix of charcoal, tiny rocks, and cover it with a layer of the moss. Please kindly advice. Thank you.
Excellent video, thank you. I've been giving the new roots a very light misting, because my plant is in my house so has fairly low humidity, but will stop doing that because I don't want to stop the roots growing or risk damaging them.
Beany & Smudge's Mum Hey, glad you enjoyed the video :) Also, light misting occasionally is okay, you just don't want to fully water your Catasetum. Happy growing!
Heheh, one of my catasetum just woke up from a 2 months slumber and is putting out roots like crazy... and this video popped up on my front page. What a perfect timing, it's like the algorithm's spying on me... hmmmm.....
What do you do when they are climbing out of the pots? My new growth’s roots this year we’re sticking way out of the pot and I think it was not a strong growth as a result
Thanks for all your useful information. I'd like to ask you what to do with a catasetum if the new growths are not on the base but along the pseudobuls. Are they new growths? Should I wait for their roots before watering? Grazie from Italy
Hi.I have a Catasetum Rebecca Northern x Expansum that till today had a green growth today. It had been given water because of the tree like growth. One growth has gone mushy but the rest are firm,When should I water again? Will this be ok?It is very rootbound. Will it do anything this spring instead?
Hi i just got myself my first Catasetum, a Susan Fuchs, i don't know the variety, it has any new growth for the moment ( february 16th). When should new growths appear? the guy who sold me the plant said to moist it from time to time, the plant looks ok and plumped. Thanks in advance!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge. I have Catasetum tenebrosum seedlings, which were in dormancy this winter and are now pushing out new growths. I have a question regarding seedlings. Do you know how long it takes Catasetinae seedlings to bloom? Thanks and have a nice day!
Hi Carlos, I've got a question maybe you can answer. I have a Ctsm tenebrosum that put out a growth this year and it gave me four flower spikes earlier this summer. My problem is that it has now started two new growths from that growth and I'm not sure what I should do with the plant. OK, I live in SW Florida so there is still a good three months (maybe four, depending on when we start to cool off) of growing season left but I'm not sure that is enough time for the plant to mature the new growths. Should I leave them on and just continue watering the plant until they mature or should I take the new growths off?
Hey Michael, I'd love to help! Could you please send me some photos of the new Growths to make a better assessment? Thanks! You can E-mail me at: the.orchid.geek@gmail.com
I sent over a couple of pictures, if you didn't receive them let me know. (gmail can be a little harsh on spam filtering, so be sure to check there). Thanks!
@@michaelmccarthy4077 I got the photos, thank you! The New Growths on your plant look Healthy and should develop normally. There's still plenty of growing time in Florida so don't worry. When watering, be careful of not getting water in the center of the New Growths. This species has a short dormancy period and it might flower for you this fall! Happy Growing!
Hi! thank you so much for the informational video. i'm sad to say i think i began watering two of my catasetinae too early. they're at the stage before the last one you showed. what should i do now? i think it stopped growing. do i stop watering and let it dry or are they goners?
Thanks for sharing. I enjoyed watching your videos. Cool! If you are coming to Canada for orchid show, LMK, I'm interested of buying catasetum orchids. Happy growing, Rady
Кирыны орхидейные эксперименты hahaha not quite, these can still grow in these pots for another year. Some of the seedlings towards the end of the video can def. Be repotted though :D
When they begin to turn brown it is a sign that they may be starting to rot but your roots might still have hope to survive . I would have to see a picture to be sure, you can send me a picture at the.orchid.geek@gmail.com. Thanks!
monivoa5 Id love to help! would you mind letting me know where you are growing your catasetum and what process of growth they are in? (are the new bulbs mature?) Thanks!
Hey Carlos, truly impeccable timing with this video, lol, but I have another question for you. At what point do you repot them into fresh media? Because I noticed that many of yours have already put out a significant amount of roots, as have mine, and now I’m afraid I’m going to damage them when I repot. Should I have repotted sooner, before the new roots emerged? Thanks Carlos, I appreciate the help and thanks again for the video. PS - loved your video from the Tamiami show, looked amazing! I’m off to the Paris expo this weekend...should be cool, a ton of international vendors - 3 days to break the bank 🤣, take care and happy growing 😉
Hey Bro, thanks! To answer your question, just like Roro041987 mentioned, you can repot as soon as you see the new growth or new roots emerge. You may repot at anytime during dormancy too (recommended) or wait until you see a new growth + roots. Many of the plants shown in the video can still grow in the same pot for about another year. Others can be genly repotted, but keep a close eye on the new roots. Don't apply to much pressure when potting in order to prevent any damage. No waaayy!!!! PARIS?! That's freaking awesome man! I hope you find a lot of really nice goodies there! I would go insane, what an extraordinary experience! Happy Growing!! - T.O.G

This is the perfect video for me right now. Thank you for your expertise, Orchid Geek!!
Watering and overall care / culture can vary greatly depending on your growing conditions. I never stop watering my Catasetinae.

What about fertilizer ? What kind of fertilizer, how many times a month, hiw much sun light ? Appreciate very much for your advice

When is the best time of year to re-pot a Catasetum orchid plant?

Any tutorial the frequency of watering and fertilize?
Any tips for Chysis limminghei? It looks like a catasetum-type orchid, but different roots and it seems to hang into its leaves for longer
Great video...so easy to follow!
Thanks, perfect timing. How about repotting them?

Just to confirm, you shouldn't do this with other orchids like dendrobiums/brassavolas, right? I imagine the root tips probably dessicating
