Somewhat popular...I think certain growers love them, and others don’t like them at all. They are quite different.

Good point about not using slow release fertiliser. I’ve just done some of my indoor growing orchids today and fortunately it’s one that will only last 2 months or so. The problem also with the type I have is that the granules are all different colours and sizes, so you really don’t know what each granule represents as far as the components of the fertiliser goes.I don’t think I’ll be using that again. Thanks for pointing that out.

So how did it grow for you this year? I also grow a few catasetum's but I don't use bark any longer. I use taller clear containers but along the same lines with a reservoir on the bottom about an 1.5" I fill this zone with hydroton (fired clay) and use course coconut husk chips as media because it holds a lot of moisture yet is dry to the touch. I put a small layer of sphagnum on the top and sprinkle a tablespoon of quality slow release fertilizer on top. I don't water til the new roots are 3"+. If you water early you will be sorry. If the bulbs start to really dehydrate I'll mist them occasionally. One the roots are way down into the coco chips I water to overflowing every 2-3 days. These plants are vigorous water loving fast growers. I have had several grow 3 or 4 new growths to full maturity from April to September. Suddenly the leaves start to yellow and I cut back the water to once a week until the last leaves drop. As dormancy sets in I stop watering and only mist from Oct til Feb. If flower spikes appear do not water or the new bulb buds will either rot or not develop as they should. Enjoy the flowers but no water til the new bulb roots are well down into the media. Then the bulbs will grow a huge root system in short order. Fred Clarke from Sunset Valley is the go to for Catasetums!
It is doing well! No bud for a bloom spike yet…. Another plant in my collection is just starting a spike. I made a post in the community area with photos if you would like to see them. Thanks so much for your detailed description of potting them. I plan to make a few changes in my method for next year.
Where do you get the taller clear containers, and how tall are they?
@edhv777 I recycle plastic containers for Catasetum orchids. I think this one had granola in it originally! It is about 4-1/2 inches tall.

Hello! I have a young Catasetum orchid and I replanted it, one leaf started to turn yellow, but I noticed that it has two growths. The question is, should I water it until the growths develop or not?
Very difficult to answer your question without knowing which season of growth your plant is in…and a picture! Unfortunately, YT not helpful with that! In general, if it’s spring, don’t water until you have long roots and tall growth. If fall, yellow leaves are common as the orchid goes into dormancy and water should be reduced all the way to nothing. These orchids should not be repotted unless dormant (no leaves). Hope that helps.

What is the logic behind cutting the roots, can't these dead roots be used instead of potting media?
Not really…they are soft and decomposing, which means they will cause the new potting media to be too acidic.

Hi i watered on its arrival and wet for about 4 hours max(by mistake) . I have re potted similar to your set up, except I have not covered with a top layer of bark. I am hoping to "dry" the roots i watered. Have I ruined my orchid? Should i use fan to dry the roots? Thanks in advance
It depends on where the orchid is in its growth cycle. If dormant, no water and new, baby roots also should not be watered. However, if the orchid has developed roots and green leaves, then water is fine. I'm not sure where your orchid is in its growth cycle. Best of luck - they are a very satisfying orchid to grow!
@@TheOrchidHut thank you. They are in dormant, very short short roots. can i save the baby roots. There is a small keikie on one skinny bulb. Very small 2 leaf about less than inch big.
Yeah, this sounds like the stage where you don’t want any water yet. I think all you can do at this point is keep it dry and cross your fingers. Introduce a trickle of water to start when the roots are about 3 inches long.
