Thank you for this! I have one that I got 3 years ago and has bloomed a couple times. It does seem a bit confused and not playing by any rules, as one spike still has leaves, while a new spike is starting. I’m going to have to repot soon, as there really isn’t room in the pot for this new growth. None of my spikes are very big. Largest is maybe 3 inches. Going to try the fertilizer you recommend too. You’ve given me guidance and confidence to repot! Thanks!
Catasetum orchid care is a popular subject right now with a lot of my friends that grow them. I always like to see how other people grow them, repot, light levels etc. That’s a nice repot and I can’t wait to see updates on how that orchid is doing for you this summer. Nice video and thanks for sharing .
I may be wrong because I only have one catasetum orchid but I don't believe that the first flower was deformed - my understanding is that catasetums produce either male or female flower spikes and the flowers look different depending on if the flower is male or female. Also my understanding is that it is suspected that growing conditions at the time of growth controls whether or not the flower spike is male or female. So the plant isn't either male or female but the flower spike is so you can have a plant that one blooming will be male flowers and the next blooming can be female flowers. From pictures I have seen I believe that the first bloom spike you had was male and the second fuller flower spike was female. awesome video!
Thanks for sharing your process. I’m starting to add some Cats. to my collection and find them fascinating. They are extremely thirsty and I’m watering every day now.
Thanks for watching! Yes, they are definitely extremely thirsty! In the middle of summer, I need to water often! You also have to feed them heavily too. :)
Great turtorial! I'm repotting mine now, and wasn't sure if I should remove all the old tired roots. Mines not as vigorous is your and the new growth isn't is far along, but I thing it will be okay. Thanks!
I grow lots of cats. When repotting I always leave some old rotors. I find they function and help the new growth catch up more quickly. When I cut off all the roots they ten to sulk.
I've noticed this too. I just potted up my catasetum and I was going to trim the roots but they were all live roots so I left them. Same with the catts. I'll cut anything noticeably dead and maybe a bit more but try not to. Even if they die in the pot they seem to fair better than if I'm aggressive with root trimming.
Remember when you said you weren't going to use slotted pots anymore? 😉 These late growths are a pain, I'm still waiting on a Cycnoches pentadactylon to do something. I'm not holding out a lot of hope for that one at this point. That one I bought as a larger NBS plant and it is questionable. The little itty bitty seedling I bought around the same time last year is much bigger and fatter now than that one was so maybe it will bloom for me.
😂😂 these were leftover and thankfully not repotme brand so they were much cheaper. I agree with the late growths being a pain, you want to treat everything the same, but when you have exceptions and late bloomers, it's annoying lol. I hope your Cycnoches pulls through, but we both know those are mega divas! Glad the seedling is pulling through though :)
Awesome video, thanks for the update. That orchid is an absolute beast! I got one this spring and it's growing the first bulb under my care. I think it's at the maturing phase now and is about 10-12" tall and looking really chonky. Have you seen an average length of time from new growth to spike? Or from matured bulb to spike? I'm anxiously waiting to see what mine does next!
how did this orchid progress after the repot? i didn't see anything on your IG with updates and i was curious to see/hear. i'm getting ready to report mine this weekend and i'm a bit nervous 😬
Don't be nervous! So far she's doing well, she's pushing two new growths, but hasn't bloomed yet. I got blooms twice last year so I guess it's taking a little break. Hope all went well!
Hi Nicole, I found this vert helpful video about growing catasetum orchids and hope that you may be able to help me with my question. I am new to these plants, but like them very much and decided to try growing them. Today I have got my order from Krull Smith with a few catasetums. They seem to be in a very good condition, but I am not sure whether I should start watering them immediately or not. I do not see any new root growth, the bulbs seem to be very plump. What should I do?
Oohhh I'm not sure if they are dormant or not, do they have leaves?? If so and if they are in active growth with big growths with roots that are established I'd water but most catasetums in this part of late spring / early winter are still dormant with no new growths and shouldn't have leaves yet. Safest bet is also to reach out to krull Smith to to see how they are caring for theirs since it's likely they have other catasetums in the same growth pattern
Yes, I wrote to Krull Smith and will wait for their response. There are no leaves. So for now it seems that the safest option is to wait with watering. Thanks!
When speaking about fertilizers please mention their NPK ratio so that people can know what growth you are opting for to have a plant like your. It seems like 11-2-12 in your case.

Thanks Justin! I appreciate you watching! I also like to see how others grow it as well! The flowers on these are so cool.

Thank you for this insight! I was definitely surprised to see them boom differently. Thank you for watching 🤗

Nice! I do that with my seedling Catasetums, or some of the more finicky ones. I agree that it does help them settle in.

Awesome repot. Thanks for sharing how you do it. I enjoyed watching. 🤗🌸👏
Thank you Shirley ♥️🤗

What a fascinating plant!
It's a cool one!
My witchcraft has a wonderful new growth.the wine delight wasn't having much progress so I watered earlier than it's recommended and it took off.
That's awesome! I'm glad it took off! Looking forward to seeing your blooms later in the summer on ig :)
The deformed flowers gave it a spooky look
They did look spooky 😂 thanks for watching my friend 🤗

I think my MMM is on a good course… for sure doing better than the last one.

It depends! I find that this one takes about 3-4 months to mature and push out a spike. I hope you get blooms soon!!
