I fertilize my hoya every time I water. Just like all my other plants. These are just my tips and recommendations. Care video coming soon. ;-) What are your easiest Hoya?
Most carnosa varieties, multiflora varieties, polneura varieties, lacunosa varieties, many big leaf ones, vl9, sunrise, im08, vaccinoides, latifolias. I fertilise mine all year round as well unless its a fresh repot
@@luciansteph Yes, I do but I try to restart my aroids if they get too big just to save space. The only ones I don’t restart are my orchids and succulents. Eventually I would like to collect just hoyas, orchids and some succulents, it will make my watering day just a bit easier.
I’m in the Phoenix metro area in the USA. For my region I’ve found an Aeroid and chonky orchid mix works amazingly! In my home things dry up SUPER fast. I can’t even keep my succulents in terracotta because of drying out issues. So like chonky pumice, chonky coco husk pieces, coco coir, chonky orchid bark and some tropical planting soil mixed in is my recipe To root mine usually go right into the soil and they’re in self watering pots with a wick that draws up lower amounts of water than a regular wick so the soil is like a wrung out sponge. It works well for no drainage glass containers, but you just have to be smart about the watering. I can get roots and new growth within 2 weeks on fresh cuttings. I do cheat and use a rooting hormone I got for my succulents which doesn’t work for them but for all my Hoya and zz varieties it works ridiculously well Once rooted I use 1/2 fertilizer mixed with the water I use to regularly water and do a full fertilization once a month. Everyone is super happy and saved my Krimson Queen pots (2 pots, 12ft of vine in total) doing this. Outside of that, prop in a glass container, no drainage with my soil half way, a thick layer of pumice or perlite on top and use 1/3 the volume of the container worth of water inside and plastic wrap the top I air out nightly and I even got my Serpens or Xiaojie root under a month and I’m getting new growth from the vine while in there with a tiny cutting of Hoya Sunrise I’d say feel free to break rules and experiment with your Hoya propagations for your region in the world! I think I’m going to start trying growing in more coco chunk chunks and see how that goes. It makes over watering (with drainage) almost impossible. It can only absorb so much water and won’t hold more than it can and releases the water at a steady rate
That’s awesome. You’re right it’s so important to figure out what works for your own growing conditions. Yours is nearly opposite to mine 😅. I’m sure many will appreciate your tips. Thank you for sharing. 😊🪴
@@JenFleming-u8q if I had cool Hoyas, or more than 5 types of Hoya, I’d give you some cuttings! I’m in Downtown Mesa! Just starting off my indoor garden and enjoy the information here as well as the plant window shopping I get to do here lol
To me, putting your plants outside in a shady area during the growing season is magic. Most of my Hoyas are growing. A rooted cutting that I had for months has a new leaf.
I agree. I do that wih my bigger plants. But I’m worried about my smaller plants getting blown over by the wind or devoured in pests. I’m protective 😅😅
I still repot immediately even with Hoya, it's ok if they struggle...it builds character 😅 hahaha. It gives me peace of mind. I recently repotted a plant from Etsy and discovered slugs in the soil😬
😂😂😂 “it builds character” Love that! You must be a patient person. It’s really risky business to not repot. It’s hard for me to watch them do nothing for months. Need to work on my patience 😅
I had my two leaf hoya for three years, I never repotted it . I thought it would remain two leaves and I loved it that way . Suddenly it pushed out a tip which I tried to pull out then decided against doing that. Now it is an eye catching 4 feet full leafed plant in a year. It flowers continuously like pearls. I like your H.carnosa
I have one Hoya it’s a fungi pink my first and only Hoya but not my last lol. I trying to wait until spring to it. Thank for the info very helpful 20:11
I used to struggle rooting Hoya also. Then I tried the humidity bag trick. IT WORKS! Try putting in a plastic bag to root or place in a lidded clear storage bin (prop box). The uncreased humidity will let that baby root like a champ.
If it has a bare stem and a single node without any leaves, just drop it in a cup of water and it will absolutely grow. I've got some propagating right now.
Oh my gosh I love Hoyas! Especially the silver Hoyas. My Wilbur Graves is my absolute favourite. I just ordered a Linearis today and I can’t wait for it to arrive. Thanks for all of your tips 💚
I enjoyed your video and the tips. “Wet sticks” are a thing in Hoyas, just less often heard of! I have a suluwesiana cutting I got as a 1-leaf, 1-node, and the leaf dropped as soon as I got it. So I kept the stem and rooted it. Now the plant has about 7 or 8 leaves :) 🍃
Actually you can sometimes get wet sticks to root and grow leaves, I cut of a leafless vine with nodes that hadn't sprouted leaves and put it with some other cuttings in pon and it has since grown a leaf. I heard Basie Plants mention it can be done, so I figured why not give it a shot. I don't like throwing things away, especially if I'm trying to get a fuller pott.
Funnily enough it's the first plant you showed after I hit play again Hoya crassipetiolata, I had forgotten what plant the cuttling was from until I sprouted the leaf. And yes you shouldn't cut off vines but this one was getting itself stuck in my mini greenhouse
@@luciansteph might be to cold? I rooted mine in my reptile room which is 24-25 C and not a lot of humidity. I've rooted other Hoya cuttings with leaves in water in there as well and they get roots pretty fast

Very helpful tips but I definitely think that plant collectors who just have hoyas but are not hoya heads or hoya collectors are the ones who don’t know how to make a hoya flourish. They always recommend to let every hoya dry out, taco test n what not. In my experience hoya collectors always say that hoyas need much more water than you think which is very true.
@brittneyschultz7830 I love it. I remember as a little kid growing up, we used to have a huge one that was my great grandmother's and we'd steal the nectar from the flowers at night

Moving can be tough on your plants. I totally get it. Hmm I would say it depends on the Hoya. My thin leafed Hoya and fuzzy pubescent Hoya get bleached in light that’s too bright. Apart from that, my other Hoya seem to love it. Try your brightest window but out of direct light and see how it goes? They’re very resilient so don’t be too worried. Hope it works out well for you 😊🪴
I learned my lesson. Ordered a Australis lisa and didn't repot it. I ended up with a fungus gnat infestation in all my plants. Between having new plants and killing gnats and larvae, my plants are taking a LONG time to recover. 😭
That’s the way my thoughts work. They go in circles in my head. Also the points sort of tie into each other. Thanks for the feedback and for watching. 😊🪴
