Hey Gerald! Lovely video as always, super chill to watch. Lil' update: 200D seems to have a new, much quieter fan and is pretty much inaudible even with the default fan profile. They also reinforced the bit that was sensitive to overtightening/cracking. Super happy with them!
This is true, now its much quiter, and now after one year after the video I bought 2 of them. New ventilator, new software made it more quiet, look that you dont get a older one (produced) at ebay...
@@kylelimeback The Godox are a bit more expensive but you get a more solid build, remote control and battery power. If you need location shooting these Amaran are a no-go, however for a home studio or just to set them and forget them, they're a great value.
@@nachojr99 That's what I'm gathering. Looks like you get better build quality out of the newer Godox models by comparison. I'd be curious to see how they stack up from a technical perspective. Location shooting isn't a big deal for me, but for a similar price, I feel like these wouldn't be too much of an upgrade from a Godox SL-60 where the newer Godox would in every way.
I just love how you incorporated the outtakes. That just gives a lot of motivation to small content creators like me to go out there and make more and more content, make mistakes, repeat, learn, and so on. Making mistakes is a part of the process and it shouldn't really make us panic!

The way you force us to listen about your sponsor is so clever that I can't even get mad
Yes, I also noticed the very, very different lux numbers for the 100d in particular. Over at DSLR Video Shooters the 100d beats the 120dii in terms of lux, here it is (clearly) the other way around. Wondering what is going on there...
Happy New Year Gerald! always love your stuff. I still vigorously proclaim that you should have a much higher sub count, your quality and thoroughness is amazing keep it up!
Your out-take rejects at the end of the video is hilarious! And I thought I had a hard time with certain paragraphs that include saying various make and model names of various products. I sometimes do 20 different re-takes for the same paragraph before I get it right. That's while using a teleprompter too, haha!
Cheers Gerald! I appreciate your continued efforts towards this platform and I’ve enjoyed watching your content over the past few years. Despite the unfortunate previous year I look forward to enjoying the content you and your follow creators put out in the world 😊
I hope you had a great holiday season Gerald! Just wanted to quickly say thanks for all the hard work you put into making informative and entertaining content. I hope you have a great 2021.
I preordered the 200X as a secondary light to my 300X. Sticking with bicolor for more versatility. Slight power reduction worth it for options I think.
@@itsanguyennguyen7646 Yep. I already have the Godox, and was considering another, but the 100D looks like a no-brainer (ideal for me!!). Will be adding one of these when they appear in France...

Thanks for another excellent review. Was about to finilise my checkout on 4 x 100d but wasnt 100% convinced and thought I'd just check if you had anything on them. Your concise and detailed info is always very helpful in decoding complex tech choices. Thanks again.
If Aputure really has cheaped out on the fan for the 200w models, it will be interesting to see if there is a Noctua fan that will fit the space and airflow needs. It might also be possible to bypass the fan controller and just run the fan continuously (might require soldering, though.)
I’m very happy to see that Aputure has finally made a more affordable light for UA-camrs (probably the target market). I’m definitely going to pick up one of these for an addition light in my studio. Do they seem to have the ability to hold larger/heavier soft boxes?
Review embargo got lifted just now, interesting if there is a reason it wasn't a scheduled upload, or why there is a small difference within the reviews.
Great review thanks Gerald. Such a good budget option in comparison to the others. I've a 120d II and this seems like a great option for my home studio for sure. Happy NY!
Thanks for the review! One day when you have time, try to check if the bulb of the Aputure lights sits exactly in the focal point of the parabolic modifier (it doesn't) and then discuss why you would use a reflector purposed for collimating light, when it doesn't collimate, and why you would be using a collimating reflector together with a layer of diffusion, ment for scattering the light.
Can not wait to get to preorder the lightdome SE, i want to leave it up permanently on the wall paired with my amaran 200d then my SL300 and lightdome 2 on a Cstand. Thanks for the video !
This is strange. I'm seeing some pretty drastic differences in light output and fan noise depending on who is reviewing these 2 lights in particular the 200d. Does Aputure have a quality control issue with the lights? For example Caleb at DSLR video shooter demonstrated some pretty horrific fan noise on his 200D. Gerald seems to have no issue with noise.
I wouldn't say that I have no issue with noise. I feel I definitely demonstrated the noise at 8:14. I don't have any issues with the 100d, but the 200d is louder. Louder than even the 120d II with an electrical sound in there too. But it's hard to tell what will be a deal-breaker for people, you know?
man those bloopers were so much fun! Thanks for the review... adding a gel to the 200d (something like an orange gel just to make the light warm) Vs. 3200k setting on the 200x? which one would you recommend?
There's no problem with the umbrella, you're just using it way to closer to the lamp. Umbrellas are intended to be used with some distance (as any other modifier) and having the possibility of using them with this light is a win win situation. You should try to use them in a video, they're cheap and good, perfect for a light like this
You could always buy a cheap umbrella (less than $10) , and saw a bit off the end of the mounting rod, to allow the fixture to be closer to the light. This would remove the issue with the power connector, at the pretty minimal expanse of having to "customise" one umbrella for the light. Job done.
It's a really, really, REALLY good time to get into cinematography. Things like these lights and Sirui's amazing budget anamorphic lenses represent true technical disruption, which is good for all of us. The cost bar for entry has been lowered TREMENDOUSLY!
Excellent review & overview, very helpful! But Aputure, you’re killing me!!! These would have been an instant purchase if provided with a battery power option!!! Weddings never have power outlets where I need them...
I've been using Elgato Key Lights and they've worked really well for my use case -If I had the space or didn't have those, I'd be picking up some of these.
Aputure is killing it with these releases! Just read the new 60d has higher lux than the 120d, which costs double. Wonder what were going to see next week!
Has anyone been able to actually buy one of these? I've had an one on backorder since February. B&H said they'll get it from Amaran April 21st but no dice. Starting to think these lights don't really exist.

Thanks Gerald. This was lit.
I was wating for this by the minute, literally!
Finally a light that I feel comfortable buying from a well known brand. I’ve been looking for such light for a long time
Wonder how trivial it would be for Aputure to swap out that 3-pin XLR power end with a low-profile one to solve the umbrella rod issue... 🤔
