I bought the vl300 less than a year ago and have had to take it in for servicing twice after light use. I asked the guys at the store I bought it from and they said they’ve had a few people have issues with that light. The light is awesome when it works, and is probably great for at home use, but when I’m shooting a video with clients and actors etc I can’t afford to have an unreliable light. Wish I had gone with aputure.
@@grad-dd9zj That was only early versions which are probably out of circulation at this point (at least if you're purchasing from a reputable retailer). I've got three SL60w's and they're all good at 120fps.
To anyone looking at the VL lights, get them!!! I’ve been using Aputure lights for years now and we just bought a 300D II for our main key light. We wanted a 120D II but decided to use that money on other things like lenses so I got us a Godox VL150 as our fill/hair light. It’s awesome. It absolutely competes with the 120D II (which I’ve used extensively as well as the 300D) in build, size, power, and quality. The light does look a touch cooler and more magenta from what I’ve seen, but honestly I don’t think you’ll notice unless you’re doing a side by side with a 120D or 300D. That’s the only way I really noticed the difference in color cast. If you don’t have the budget for an Aputure light, get the Godox. You won’t be disappointed. We’ve actually started only using the 300D for our bigger more formal shoots, and we take the VL150 on the road because the light is just so much more compact and it still has great color.
Grabbed the VL 150 and the Soft box from the links- thanks for all the awesome videos Gerald! You’re a great resource for me as I try to improve my video quality....and the humour is top shelf:)

@@Hexspa hey, I just got back to my studio and did a v quick side by side test on the vl150 and the sl60 i set both to 100% and then adjusted the camera exposure settings. Just found these lights at a local retailer yesterday and was blown away by the specs on paper, but I couldn't find any trustworthy reviews of them. Well, 24 hours later Gerald comes to the rescue! Thanks! Tried out the 300D II a couple of months ago, and while being a beautifully constructed light, it's not worth the money for me. I'm super happy with my Godox flashes but weren't convinced about the SL-leds. These however, I will buy.
Look at what I found! I was looking into the Aperture lights and this video shows up! Thanks for making the video Gerald. I love that you always show the product comparison in every aspect and show the result. I’m so convinced 😂

I own both the Aputure 300D mk II and the Godox VL300. To be honest, the bag that comes with the Aputure does feel premium. Other than that, I think the set up time of both are similar and the output light are both great. Your review helped me on buying the Godox instead of getting a second Aputure.

This is definitely a fantastic product, I wish these lights came out 3 months ago. However, you may want to check out Potato Jet's review of the 120D MKII first, because he covers some small improvements on the construction that may be better in the long run than the Godox light.
On the strength of your review, I just recieved my new VL150 to supplement my 120d ii and can't fault the light it produces. Yes, the cables that come with it are a little on the cheap side but the actual light itself, the yoke etc are superb !
I really enjoyed watching this comparison. Gerald Undone reviews are the highest quality, most informative content on UA-cam. Thanks for everything you do!
I have a SL60W Godox and after watching a few YT reviews I practically took my ear one inch away from the light to find these hell of noisy fans. They simply do not exist in mine. To be fair, maybe I have a more recent production (I bought mine less than a year ago). I heard somewhere that Godox probably went in and replaced the fans in later productions, as a response to the reviews. Just no need for announcements. Mine is as quiet as whatever you can think of. But these new ones, I sure will add, simply for the battery power possibility and the extra features. Gerald didn't mention though if the VL series has those Aputure preset light effects. Not sure when I will use them, but it's nice to know they exist. I didn't start this vain life. Awesome review and information.
Gerald, I saw your video several times and I used your advices and get the VL150 - and I don't regret it. Thanks very much for your work. I'm your fan - and I'm not a fan of quite anybody :) ....
Saw that Adorama had the VL300 on sale today for $519. Checked B&H and they had it for $749. Came to your video to convince myself that "I need it." After watching your video, I went back to B&H and they updated price to $499 (Literally within the 15 minutes that it took to watch your video.) Bought it through B&H from your affiliate link!
Thank you so much for the in-depth comparison of the Aputure and Godox lights. I was about to buy 120D II before the COVID isolation but now I definitely need to save some money and will aim for a Godox VL150.
"as good or better in pretty much every category" I'm curious about this statement. If you ignore the sidus link app vs godox app (there is no comparison, godox's app is very poor), then i think i would agree with you. However there is one issue: You mentioned very quickly the aputure fresnel. Can you please show a side by side comparison of the aputure 120 and vl series with the aputure fresnel 2x and spotlight mount? Both the aputure fresnel and spotlight mount require a specific distance of the COB inside the attachment to work properly. If that distance is not meant, then the fresnel 2x and spotlight mount are not going to work. In that case, the extra ~$300 more for the aputure 300 vII would be a huge selling point.
Love the content as always! Gerald: was it just me or is there a magenta shift in the godox lights? Would one be able to match these lights (Aputure and Godox) in the same shot without using gels? Asking for a friend that already has an Aputure 120d mkII and is heavily considering getting a VL150 too... 🧐
Intersting. In the light comparison test, on my iMac, the Aputure lights all look a bit "warmer" to me. Only a slight shift, and i guess easily fixed in correction.
@@timbeaton5045 Yeah, Aputure's lights seem more natural-looking on the skin to me, but Gerald even said the Godox are more color accurate? I know things can be matched in post, but since I have to live stream a lot these days, it would be good to know of a way to match them up live.
Yeah I felt the same way. It would be interesting to see the shooting settings? Were they color'd the same exact way in post? I was very intersted in the godox but If that magenta shift is real (OR even worse: the magenta was pushed in post to compensate for the Godox pushing more green then I'd be more like to get the aperture). Also you can spot the purple background being warmer on aperture shots. Not sure if that light is affecting the BG purple he hits it with or it's being warmed in post
I use the Godox SL-60W, and mine has a definite magenta cast. It's subtle, but there. I took a white balance shot with the light and used that as my custom white balance in camera. Helped get rid of it.
Just take my money! 🤣👍🏼 I literally just dropped my aperture studio light and it broke. These look pretty awesome and I think they will work great for my studio set up. Thanks Gerald! 🎥🎬
Joseph Rotoni I didn’t brake it on purpose lol... just a studio accident... I have insurance for the light so I think I can get a brand new one for free but these are cheaper and I think I may get some of these to have as well 🎥🎬 #KeepCreating
@@JaredMagers haha well I appreciate the laugh in these times especially! Thank you. Have a good one and let me know how that light works out. I think I may go for the VL150.
That's just what I was wondering. Flicker seemed to be an issue with previous Godox models, which is why I was holding out for an Aputure. Hopefully, Godox has fixed that problem.
While I'm looking for a cheap alternative of the Aputure 120d, I was looking for something acceptable but nothing superior, well... since Gerald Undone says it's better, than it's better for sure, which the channel is above the highest credibility on UA-cam, and never failed to be honest, professional and precisely/accurately detailed.
Thank you for the recommendation Gerald! My client just ordered two of the xl150 and it works great with a neewer cheap softbox. We only had one on set today but it was a nice touch. I keep saying we need a 300d or 600d to make the lighting work correctly but this is a great start. Glad that the godox xl150 brightness output is a little higher than the 120d too.
Wait, did I really hear you pronounce the company name CORRECTLY as "God Ox"? Dang, you really do know what you're talking about! For a little background to my comment, the company's name in Chinese, 神牛, can literally be translated as "Holy Cow" or "Sacred Cow," neither of which would be too appealing to the outside world. They somehow came up with "God Ox" instead, which most consumers and UA-camrs (here's looking at you, Robert Hall) run together as "Go Dox", which seems to me a terrible idea with a few exceptions for those that really deserve a good doxxing. In current Chinese parlance, 很神 ("godlike") is often used as a superlative, to marvel at someone's excellence. It's also taken on the role as a modifier, as in 神准 ("incredibly accurate" or "spot on"). Yes, the ancient language of Chinese is quite adaptable and vibrant in our world today!
This is actually incorrect. My friend Rob Hall and I spoke to the owner of Godox and a sales rep who said it is pronounced "goh-dox". The company originally did have the "godlike" meaning attached but then shifted away from religious meanings for business purposes.
Discovered you through your recent studio tours of other notable UA-camrs and happy to say that this is the video that made me subscribe to your channel. This video was highly informative. I'm just getting into the consideration phase of starting a youtube channel and like knowing that there are alternatives to Aputure lights is a critical piece of info. Thanks so much for your thoroughness in your reviews.
I would love to see a followup on these Godox lights as nearly HALF of the ones I purchased have failed within 6 months. I don't blame you, but there certainly should be some sort of follow up and accountability as you undoubtedly influence many purchases. If nothing else, help people understand that companies like Godox are financing the next gen of products, by selling unproven models to early adopters. The second gen of these lights fixed all the issues that screwed over people like me. Understanding where a company is in the production cycle of a product is now ESSENTIAL in making smart purchases. Granted, this scumbag business model is nothing new; Blackmagic Design used it to grow early on. The first gen of Apple products used to be infamously bad, but now nearly every manufacturer adopts this "figure it out later" model. Thats my Two Cents. Thanks for all you do Gerald.
Not even finished with the video, but that’s what I searched for hours while only seeing worst lights in comparison. Thanks you so much! I kiss your eyes
I didn’t even know these were about to release. I’m still lugging around the Impact octabulb lights for video. It’s time to finally upgrade, and these are perfect. Thanks for the solid review.
Thanks for another informative and fun video Gerald, after a heated discussion with my hard drives and speakers, my GVM 480LS cast the tie breaking vote that we start saving for the VL150 (the joys of home isolation)
Man thanks for this video. I went and got the VL 150 from B&H for $339. I know Aputure has a $400 COB coming out but I thinks this was a great buy yesterday! This video helped.
I bought the FV200 with the Aputure light dome 2 about a month ago and really like it. I can use it as a flash and a continuous light for video. It works well!
Another great video...I love your reviews bro most be boring and voices get irritating....with aputure twice as high and always back ordered I'm glad it was cause I wouldn't have seen this review....you saved me $ godox vl 150 for the win ...thanks again bro keep em coming
I ageed with this video until my VL 150 caught on fire on a shoot and then burnt a small spot on my rug. Less than 2 years old barely used. Maybe 50 uses.
Thanks for this video. I have been eyeing these and had not found a decent review. Going to be picking up both a VL300 and a VL150 now. Already use AD200s and a V1 for my photo work. These will plug in to my kit really well.
Couple of things. First the most glaring. That laofas light dome is half price, maybe but when you pointed the dome at the camera, I could see a tonne of green reflection which is a major problem with the cheaper domes. Do a colour temp and CRI check with that dome and vs Aperture and you'll definitely see a colour shift. Nothing comes for free. Second. With two mounting points to the light with one sided tightening, it relies on the one side pulling the U together for side 2 to lock down. I've seen these mounts in the past and they don't tend to stand up over time. With the VL300 and a dome, you're definitely going to see some sag issues down the road. They are just two things I can easily pick with eye and experience without having actually used the lights myself. I did test apertures vs nanlite forzas and ended up going with the Forzas for a number of reasons, most of which is around light quality, build quality and design. One of the things I like about the forzas is they are a very short light, using high quality heat sinks internally with the fan, what this means is in tight spaces I can literally back the light right up into a corner of a room etc or close to a ceiling. Many things to consider in the new world of COB lighting. I know doing tests is a hell of a lot of work, but one omission is light quality when dimmed. They can vary widely.
My FV200 is my go to above like 10 others right now. If you had to choose just 1, would it be the FV150 or VL150? I’ll be picking up a VL200 ASAP to see which I like better.
I've been patiently waiting for a good alternative to the 120d ii. Think it's time I finally pull the trigger on a proper video light. Thanks for making this video! excellent and informative as always!!!

Not sure when I will use them, but it's nice to know they exist. I didn't start this vain life. Awesome review and information.
I've been split between getting one of these or the nanlite for ages now
Gerald, I saw your video several times and I used your advices and get the VL150 - and I don't regret it. Thanks very much for your work. I'm your fan - and I'm not a fan of quite anybody :) ....
Just when I thought I wasn't going to spend anymore money 😅 thanks G
Saw that Adorama had the VL300 on sale today for $519. Checked B&H and they had it for $749. Came to your video to convince myself that "I need it." After watching your video, I went back to B&H and they updated price to $499 (Literally within the 15 minutes that it took to watch your video.) Bought it through B&H from your affiliate link!
Go dox or God ox?
Thank you so much for the in-depth comparison of the Aputure and Godox lights. I was about to buy 120D II before the COVID isolation but now I definitely need to save some money and will aim for a Godox VL150.
Hey Gerald, great video!
Any possibility (if you still have the lights) of testing the aputure fresnel 2 with the Godox lights? Thanks!
Newer to this channel. Enjoying your thorough reviews. I’m definitely eyeing up a Godox VL150.
I like the nanlite forza lineup. I think you should check them out aswell!
Yep! Awesome lights. I got the Forza 300 and received the Forza 60 as a bonus. Crazy good deal!
@@AndreiLucaa How are they on the fan noise in comparison to sl60w or aputure?
Louder past self
@@AndreiLucaa Nice! Where did you buy it?
Michael Muncatchy from a local dealership in Romania. westbuy.ro
Thx Gerald, this is just the video I've been waiting for since I stumbled over the VL series on the internet.
"as good or better in pretty much every category"
I'm curious about this statement. If you ignore the sidus link app vs godox app (there is no comparison, godox's app is very poor), then i think i would agree with you. However there is one issue:
You mentioned very quickly the aputure fresnel.
I was going to ask the same thing. Can you use the fresnel and leko mount? That's the main reason I would use a COB lights right now.
Your thorough attention to detail is always inspiring.
Dude, your content is great, your narrative style is smooth, natural and informative, and your jingle....wah! Thanks mate for the great content.
Just take my money! 🤣👍🏼 I literally just dropped my aperture studio light and it broke. These look pretty awesome and I think they will work great for my studio set up. Thanks Gerald! 🎥🎬
Man you dropped and broke your aputure light just to buy these... I don't think that was what he was going for.
Joseph Rotoni I didn’t brake it on purpose lol... just a studio accident... I have insurance for the light so I think I can get a brand new one for free but these are cheaper and I think I may get some of these to have as well 🎥🎬

@@JaredMagers haha yeah man I was totally being sarcastic. I was wondering if I'd get you to bite though lol.
Joseph Rotoni Haha I was wondering if you were being serious or not. I bit 🤣👍🏼
@@JaredMagers haha well I appreciate the laugh in these times especially! Thank you. Have a good one and let me know how that light works out. I think I may go for the VL150.
I think you're the only creator that leaves me with no questions to ask once the video ends
Any flicker, especially at high frame rates?
That's just what I was wondering. Flicker seemed to be an issue with previous Godox models, which is why I was holding out for an Aputure. Hopefully, Godox has fixed that problem.
While I'm looking for a cheap alternative of the Aputure 120d, I was looking for something acceptable but nothing superior, well... since Gerald Undone says it's better, than it's better for sure, which the channel is above the highest credibility on UA-cam, and never failed to be honest, professional and precisely/accurately detailed.
The Godox lights seem to be a bit cooler in regards to color temperature IMO.
Something a gel can fix.
@@Newtperc It would be interesting to know what camera he was filming on. I know he has a few different rigs.
@@pahwraith At that point gel would begin to cut the light output down and it would no longer be more powerful than the Aputure.
@@Newtperc I'd not want to gel my light if I don't have to. The least amount of steps to the process the better!
@@GlenReed
But I don't necessarily see it as a deal breaker, that's all I'm saying.
Just ordered the 300 one. You are the best. Thank you!
Can you please say: "I'm Gerald Undone and I'm not dangling dirty like in my last video" - Cheers!
Bought a 300D II and 120D two days ago..
F
So return them. You're still in the window
I bought those same lights 3 months ago oh well
@@fansofER Still fantastic lights. It's just the nature of technology
Nicholas Smith I have no regrets, the 120D II & 300D II are solid lights that will last me years. I did lots of research before buying them
Really appreciate the thorough comparison and detailed numbers for each. Well done.
OHMYGOD i would've never found out if i wasn't reading the comments while watching this video
This is actually incorrect. My friend Rob Hall and I spoke to the owner of Godox and a sales rep who said it is pronounced "goh-dox". The company originally did have the "godlike" meaning attached but then shifted away from religious meanings for business purposes.
Best lighting kit comparison I've ever seen. Very clear. You answered all of my questions and more. Definitely subscribing.
Its pronounced Go Dox not God ox
Discovered you through your recent studio tours of other notable UA-camrs and happy to say that this is the video that made me subscribe to your channel. This video was highly informative. I'm just getting into the consideration phase of starting a youtube channel and like knowing that there are alternatives to Aputure lights is a critical piece of info. Thanks so much for your thoroughness in your reviews.
God-Ox pronunciation approved.
Frank Feng Is this true? My whole internal dialog has been changed.
All hail the God-Ox. He bring-eth affordable light to illuminate the path.
@@ToddLloyd True. That's what Godox means in Chinese.
You are making me so happy hearing about this. Woot for new lights!
I didn't know which one to choose for my purpose. Now I do. Thanks a lot Gerald!!
Thanks for the great review. The FV150 is on sale at B&H for $219!!!!! Buying through your link now.
I’ve been waiting for someone to review these. Glad it was you!
Watching at .75 speed definitely increases your sarcasm by 75%!! Lol
Been waiting for a video on these VL lights! Glad you were one of the 1st!!
I’ve been waiting for this ever since it was announced. Thanks for the review!!
Not even finished with the video, but that’s what I searched for hours while only seeing worst lights in comparison. Thanks you so much! I kiss your eyes
Hey Gerald, your videos are excellent, including this one. Superbly done!
This video helped.
dude..you're amazing lol... so impressed by your reviews and the way you articulate facts ...
YES! You hit all the things that are relevant. Even the option to mount at 90° (which can be useful). Thanks for another great review.
I bought the FV200 with the Aputure light dome 2 about a month ago and really like it. I can use it as a flash and a continuous light for video. It works well!
I'm in awe that you are the only UA-camr who pronounces Godox properly.
Another great video...I love your reviews bro most be boring and voices get irritating....with aputure twice as high and always back ordered I'm glad it was cause I wouldn't have seen this review....you saved me $ godox vl 150 for the win ...thanks again bro keep em coming
Thanks Gerald. I'm getting into videography and need some lights. I believe you've pointed me in the right direction.
Was hesitant about purchasing one of the SL series lights because of the fan noise, but will definitely take a very serious look at these.
The usual Gerald.. Being all amazing and giving us to the point information. Thank you so much for this. Stay safe.
I'm can't get enough of the godox lights. I just did a photoshoot with the godox ad300 pro on my channel and im loving it!
I love when someone can be very clear. U did the job, nice!
I noticed you look to the right to get undone. Do you look to the left to get done?
Almost forgot - I must say, all of your videos are super-informative, but this is a real nugget of a video, for my needs. Thanks very much!
Gerald, thanks for this outstanding, brightly informative, cool, hugely helpful video. Love your speaking cadence-fascinating narration. Cheers, amazing teacher! 💛😎
Thanks Gerald for being a messenger of good news. I been waiting for them for a while and here they are. I wish they bit cheaper. When I buy, I but from your links, make sure they works. Keep doing a good job.
Take a look at the nanlite forza 60, 300, and 500! They are incredible alternatives to Aputure at a cheaper price. I also believe that are better in a lot of ways.
I wish you could have used the same light modifier on both to eliminate color bias of the Softbox materials
Is it me or does the Aputure actually looks warmer in comparison to the Godox? The Aputure also appears to have a slight green shift.
