"It was all for testing purposes". It's okay Gerald, that's what I tell myself too when I spend waaaay too much money on overkill equipment that I'll never use to it's full potential hahaha
Yeah, It is because Gerald is a ****ing nerd and has in us the nerdiest audience, enjoying how he spends just for the sake of watching the nerdiest lighting stuff on the internet.
There's a certain usefullness to seeing people going over board. Type "this is how you can do it if you really want to" and then try to make at least an approximation.
"So," [pulls out massive color accuracy chart] "this is just for fun, for the nerds out there." This implies that watching a 24 minute video on a lighting set up with a technical breakdown of the equipment involved, doesn't automatically qualify you as a nerd. This is the perspective you have when you sit comfortably atop the nerd hierarchy.
It’s okay for me to turn them on separately, just give me a space where I can put all this stuff with no need to reassemble them every time

Oh man. I love that you made everything so accurate! I’m watching you on color calibrated 77 oled with audio calibrated 5.1 klipsch speakers. It cannot be more accurate than this!
Thanks for another great video Gerald. As a new Canadian UA-camr, your channel has been amongst the best in helping me set up my channel, including setting my Studio which I’m in the middle of doing. Sound treatment foam going up later today!
Love this and much easier than my set up. I was able to get a some smart plugs and found studio mode lights that I can set/forget and use "OK Google. Turn on Studio" to turn on all the lights. Being able to say that command on the way to a stream/meeting has made my life so much easier.
you are outstanding. i see so many pros with extreme shortcuts and couldn't care less attitude about their shots, light and workflow but then i come here and i'm recharged and inspired!
Every so often I think I'm weird for finding these things so interesting while everybody makes fun of me or suffers my monologues about the latest and greatest videography fact I found out about. Then I see the UA-cam notification, I click on it and understand that I probably am a bit of an odd duck, but I'm not alone. Thanks, Gerald, and thanks, commentators! We might look odd in somebody else's eyes, but boy do we love what we do! Keep getting technical, keep being a videography nerd, and keep inspiring us to get better! For what we are is just a big weird family of videographers! Great video!
I’m glad someone else shares my fanatical passion for lighting. I spend so much time tweaking everything to solve every little problem. My latest passion is lighting 3 different sets with minimal physical changes to lights. Aputure and SidusLink make all of this happen and its incredible!
I liked before better 😂 the differences are very slight and you know that. For me this is good news because it reminds me that although none of us have your setup we can achieve comparable result. I’ll keep using my falcon eyes lights and live through you.
Loved the excitement you have about all this stuff. Also I think you would really love home assistant. It allows you to control multiple things from one app and also set up automations. You could set it up to turn the studio lights on when you arrive or off when you leave. And be able to see if they are on remotely. Great video!
Re Godox lighting - Buyer Beware! I had the same problem with the VL300 that many others had where it would overheat after a minute, the fans would then kick in, but the light went out... until it cooled off enough then the light came back on, fans shut off... repeat. After ONE use. Returned it to B&H and got the Aputure C300d Mark II.
The problem with the 600c Pro is that it has significantly reduced light output when compared to the 600d Pro and also the 600x. I'd rather use some +/- green gel if it was absolutely necessary (unless I need RGB). The level that you're going for colour accuracy is also really overkill. I can tell you as someone who works on set every day that most productions don't get this nit-picky; the green/magenta shift has to be super obvious for something to be done.
Great example of how much can go on behind the scenes that make only subtle changes to the outcome, but convenience is a really important factor in creating. "Convenience" may sound like "laziness", but it’s actually more like "efficiency".
Love this video Gerald. You absolutely have the most accurate dialed in color. Love hearing your thoughts and process setting things up. We all love your content
Oh, I know about that outlet connected to a light switch! Alec from @TechnologyConnections has just made a video about them. And you are actually using it as intended, yay!
Very Nice setup, i like the idea of a 1 switch turns all the lights on that is ideal, i do studio work and yes it's a pain if you have to remember which switches you turn on and them remember the camera settings and all that sooner or later one time your going to forget something and it's going to ruin your video, lol i know what that is like.. yes so great setup i love the mood you set the purple and orange and love the way the lights work for you.. Very idea and not boring at all..
I literally have the same magnets for my amaran t4c light tubes! They work great. I found that they work great on steel c stands as well for set lighting, no need for cardellini clamps
I have not much interest in your lighting but I could listen to you nerding off for hours! One can really tell how important this is for you... I love it!
Lots of information on calibration and settings on lights. Love one controller which can remember all the settings. The tip on the detachable battery was the kind of practical consideration that may not be explicitly mentioned by the manufacturer or reviewers. Very thorough and well done.
Just realized as I watched this that I can't think of a single Gerald Undone video that I haven't enjoyed (over many years now). So, once again, awesome job. Thanks.
Awesome video and great timing as we're planning on redoing our studio lighting in the new year. One thing I figured out re: studio mode is if you buy some wifi plugs off amazon (the kind that plug into a socket and then you plug the light into the wifi plug and you can switch it using any home automation app) then if the power goes out and comes back on the wifi plugs will default to off. Then you can run your lights in studio mode without worrying. Also I have the wifi plugs set to a voice command so I can turn on the studio lights from anywhere in the room even while my hands are busy setting stuff up.
Do you remember recovering old video tapes? We would end up with a box of beta tapes after a while, that editors would use to build segments and drop into bigger pieces, or contained spots that were out of date. You could make those work tapes “fresh” by hovering this big magnet over the top of them. Supposedly, the magnetic indicators on a tape would be pulled in one direction, in essence “erasing” everything on it and setting it to factory. We were told not to get this device near any computers, because it would mess up drives. Watching this video made me think of those days, when you put that powerful magnet on your camera and glued it to your cabinet. It made me wonder if the strength of a strong magnet, like the gadget we used on the tapes, might have some weird affect on the camera electronics, and for sure on the camera storage cards. What do you think?
I always feel like I have a decent setup until I watch one of your videos. Awesome work, you show such attention to detail. Thanks for all the nerd details!
how bright are those lights at 100% in fan mode? Are planes landing in the backyard then? I bought the amaran p60c and 100d because of your channel and I really like the app also.
Here's what I think about your colors: WOW. Thanks a lot for this video, it helps a lot. I lately bought some mid entry lights from Jinbei, a 300 and 60 with some modifiers, they're cool to start experimenting with filming (xt4 rig and xpro3) but the fan noise is driving me crazy. I think I'm gonna tear them up and mod the fans with "silent" PC fans.
What a fantastic video Gerald! I was looking to automate as many things in the studio as possible, and this video came up. A small tip I do to avoid forgetting things: I have a stream deck with all the apps I need to use in order, for example 1 button opens the mic gain app, 1 button opens the Sidus link app (you can actually download the iPhone app on a mac) etc. They are in order and I just open them one by one which sets the studio to rec mode.
Love the before and after stills. Although, it made me chuckle as I imagined you saying "and the color is so perfect that I no longer wear my grey laces for color balancing in post. On the other hand, I did need to sell my watch to buy it". Kidding of course. Thanks for another great video G!
The Sidus Link app is pure power. I work as a DP in Brazil doing commercials and often I find myself with 30+ lights fully controlled over Sidus Link with my teams. It's revolutionary for all industries.
agreed.. much more cinematic.. more complex.. and also.. yeah.. that softbox is the size of a window! hehe. One thing I did once.. is hang a silver christmas ornament near a light.. it creates a very bright spot.. that adds to the eye catch.. and it doesn't add any light to the scene. BTW.. your combo of subtle humor and real tech deep diving.. you are one of my faves for sure... really enjoy your content.. thanks thanks thanks! :)
Really useful info that you won't find in the product description or in reviews left by people on one product or other and presented in a very objective way! Big👍🏻
Try using Alexa based power cubes. “Studio on” or “Alexa, mini split off”. Each module is addressable but also nested into group. “Alexa, everything on”. Every thing shut down at the end of the day if I forget.
My VL150 actually does the opposite, when the power goes on, they don't come on, but also the remote control doesn't work until you turn them on manually.
Good video. Lights are low on my priorities at the moment, but always in the back of my mind. Using a BenQ your color indeed looks very accurate and natural.
Subjective but I think it looks a lot better with the fill light off, the light is going everywhere and lighting up the bg a lot, killing nice contrast. I'd recommend trying an Amaran f22c softened with grid over the table at angle, keeping the fill light soft and on you but off the background.
Nice video Gerald! For your use those Amaran tubes are an upgrade for sure. I think a huge disadvantage is how ugly they look if you want to use them in the shot with the battery attached. That's why I went with the Pavo tubes...
I use a 100x in a similar fashion to what you said about the 100d, but after I'm done shooting and before I kill the power, I switch all my lights off in the Sidus Link app. That way even if power is cut and restored, the light will not turn on unless you want it to.
I put my studio on a couple of smart plugs, they also give me a nice report on power draw and automatically cut the power when I leave the studio building. I also taped a SwitchBot robot to my Godox ML60 lights to automate switching those on by talking to Siri, as frustratingly those lights require physically pressing a button on the back after a power cut.
Loving this style. Sort of like you just invited me to your studio and have a nerdy chit chat over the gears. Anyway, after watching this, I really do need to add more lights to my studio lol

Very impressive setup and infotaining video! Makes me want to set up my new home office (to become studio) with an overkill video light setup as well. Might get good use for video calls from work also 😁
We just ordered 2 150's during their black Friday sale, and it's comically huge haha like, it's going to replace anytime we use 4x4 or even 6x6 frames.
Do you have an videos with more details on the way you used the light meter to fix the white color of the lights? It would be really cool to see this in more detail!
Can't you use a "2do" check list with everything you have to do prior to shoot (batteries, set design...), and a list of things to do just before hitting record (lights, sdcards, colors...), and a list for after (lights, SD cards,...)? It helps a lot, I do it for a lot of tedious tasks like repairing PCs, optimizing Windows, working on a design, project management... You could make many situational check lists cause sometimes product review is not the same as light or sound review. This would free the effort for other things. Even with an excellent memory and focus sometimes little forgotten details can ruin the process.
This video reminds me of camera shading a truck for ESPN and how I had 20 minutes, whatever shitty lighting the arena had, alot of super green SD and Clean HD lenses mixed in with POV cameras and standard camcorders to match perfectly. With no cards or anything just my scopes and the shading boxes. Moral of the story, with a proper monitor and enough training you can eyeball anything to within a margin of error. Good times, sure miss it.
"It was all for testing purposes". It's okay Gerald, that's what I tell myself too when I spend waaaay too much money on overkill equipment that I'll never use to it's full potential hahaha
Like how Gerald couldn’t say that with a straight face.
Ditto…

There are camera/lighting set up nerds, and then there are mired values, luminous flux, SSI comparing R9 value delta UV checking lighting nerds...
I guess this is "Gerald Overdone"
Every light on a single switch is an absolute dream scenario 🤤
It’s okay for me to turn them on separately, just give me a space where I can put all this stuff with no need to reassemble them every time
Oh man. I love that you made everything so accurate! I’m watching you on color calibrated 77 oled with audio calibrated 5.1 klipsch speakers. It cannot be more accurate than this!
except for the perfect golden ratio framing of the background 🙂
I;ll trade you your setup for my setup but I'm not going to tell you what mine is until you agree
@@mvvagner it’s your iPhone SE?
@@mvvagner yeaaah maybe not :)
Thanks for another great video Gerald. As a new Canadian UA-camr, your channel has been amongst the best in helping me set up my channel, including setting my Studio which I’m in the middle of doing. Sound treatment foam going up later today!

Having the presets is clutch. I use this feature on shoots all the time.
Ok serious question, should one be concerned about putting magnets that close to a camera or any other kind of electronic device?
I'm a little concerned for Gerald's watch around those things
48” is my sweet spot for a dome modifier
Every so often I think I'm weird for finding these things so interesting while everybody makes fun of me or suffers my monologues about the latest and greatest videography fact I found out about. Always learn so much from all your testing💚

Never stop striving for excellence!! That's what makes your channel so unique and insightful...
"Doesn't matter how you feel. My color is... Perfect!" - this line was pure gold. I really enjoy this style of delivery. Keep it up!
The amount of commitment is enormous! Really enjoyed your setup!
Love this more conversational style of video. Love hearing the reasoning behind your changes in studio. Excellent vid!
"Doesn't matter how you feel, my color is perfect" is my new favourite qoute from Gerald 😁💪
Loved the excitement you have about all this stuff. Also I think you would really love home assistant. It allows you to control multiple things from one app and also set up automations. You could set it up to turn the studio lights on when you arrive or off when you leave. And be able to see if they are on remotely. Great video!
Very enlightening video. No more candles and flashlights for me .Cheers to you good sir.

That's the fun part about a static studio, you can get super picky about little details. 🤓👍
Great example of how much can go on behind the scenes that make only subtle changes to the outcome, but convenience is a really important factor in creating. "Convenience" may sound like "laziness", but it’s actually more like "efficiency".
Still my favorite outro on UA-cam
Love this video Gerald. You absolutely have the most accurate dialed in color. Love hearing your thoughts and process setting things up. We all love your content
Thank you!
In the middle of re-planning my studio lights so this was a perfect boost and inspiration.
Oh, I know about that outlet connected to a light switch!

Seriously, you have finally come undone! The magnets section was comedy gold. Thanks for another great video.

Great show. I agree with you regarding simplicity (device overload). Fewer mechanical movements and adjustments can aid creative machinery. Thank you.
how bright are those lights at 100% in fan mode? Are planes landing in the backyard then? I bought the amaran p60c and 100d because of your channel and I really like the app also.

Cool lights.... but DANG. Those magnets! Adding those to my stocking stuffer list! 😋
My inner gear nerd is absolutely loving this video! Thank you!
Dude, those magnets! Getting them right now, that’s exactly what my pavotubes need!
What a fantastic video Gerald! I was looking to automate as many things in the studio as possible, and this video came up. while i was watching this i just rebuilt my own lighting setup. thanks for the inspiration!
Those 1/4th 3/8ths magnets do look useful! Great job on the lighting setup.
Love the before and after stills. Although, it made me chuckle as I imagined you saying "and the color is so perfect that I no longer wear my grey laces for color balancing in post. On the other hand, I did need to sell my watch to buy it". Kidding of course. Thanks for another great video G!
You really sold me on these strong magnets! I might get a couple for myself..
The Sidus Link app is pure power. I work as a DP in Brazil doing commercials and often I find myself with 30+ lights fully controlled over Sidus Link with my teams. It's revolutionary for all industries.
crazy how I was looking for magnets for my new sets of pavotube 30x and Gerald pops up with the solution!
I just tried to put the light dome 2 in my studio but I didn't have the space, so I reverted back to the mini. Your key light is HUGE!!!
Gerald Overdone
Looks so clean in there! Amazing breakdown.
Very interesting, helpful and great info. All Aputure here as a result of you and UA-cam. Thanks, Aputure! 😀
Even if Gerald filmed himself on iPhone 4, under fluorescent lights of the high school gym, I would still watch him!
agreed.. much more cinematic.. more complex.. and also.. yeah.. that softbox is the size of a window! hehe. When you do a video and totally realize what complete nerd you are - and it puts a big smile on your face. Love it! More is More!
I've noticed that in the comparison "Before and After", the after removes the watch on your wrist :)
One of your best videos, love it and love Aputure
I love the threaded magnets. Great idea!
Nice studio, btw I love your work on Guardians of the Galaxy.😄
Magnets!!! (13:40) I love your enthusiasm about magnets...SOLD! I'm buying some today...I can't wait for Santa to put them in my stocking.
Loved every moment of this! Love how much you care about every little detail, it's inspiring 🙌🏽
I like the perfect color accuracy 💜
Really useful info that you won't find in the product description or in reviews left by people on one product or other and presented in a very objective way! Big👍🏻
Try using Alexa based power cubes. “Studio on” or “Alexa, mini split off”. Each module is addressable but also nested into group. “Alexa, everything on”. Every thing shut down at the end of the day if I forget.
9:30 "My colo(u)r is perfect." Love that.
100% loved this geeky rant! I'd push the left background light a noch tho, we need more purple!
My VL150 actually does the opposite, when the power goes on, they don't come on, but also the remote control doesn't work until you turn them on manually.
Cute modifier... Using for years the Octabox 190 from Elinchrom, now _that´s_ a beast lol.😅
All lights on one switch. Such a great and simple solution.
i also think the lighting is much better. it has the painting feeling now. good job
I use a 100x in a similar fashion to what you said about the 100d, but after I'm done shooting and before I kill the power, I switch all my lights off in the Sidus Link app. That way even if power is cut and restored, the light will not turn on unless you want it to.
"Testing purposes" haha! Yeah right, Gerald!
My little Pavotubes also have that issue not working with C-C charging, really annoying
Loving this style. Sort of like you just invited me to your studio and have a nerdy chit chat over the gears.
Anyway, after watching this, I really do need to add more lights to my studio lol
I liked the video even though im not a video creator. 100% agree on the barrier to enry and forgetting though - applies to other areas of life too.
If price is an issue, Amaran lights are fantastic. I’ve never owned an Aputure light so I can’t speak to the build quality, but their “lesser” brand is also well built. Of course they all work with the Siduslink App so you have the same levels of management.
Side note, I’m not sponsored by Amaran, I just have a limited budget but still want the best I can afford.
"It does not matter what you think about my color. My color is perfect." will be my all purpose quote of the week.
I don't have home studio light budgets, but I enjoyed watching this YT video 👍
"I might have overdone it with these lights... and the $3,600 chip board." 😂 Good stuff!
A wall switch is ideal. But if you don't happen to have a switched outlet in your studio, a 6X power strip works almost as well.
Wow! I've never seen a hexagon on a vectorscope before. It was so beautiful my brain leaked out from my ears.😱😱😱
That's one hell of a tea strainer you got there Gerald.... LOL...
I am not a musician but I think I could pull off that base line in your intro just from watching
Great work.
Your home studio is my home office + home lab + home studio combined with space to spare.
Love this, epic setup and shout out to aputure too
This video reminds me of camera shading a truck for ESPN and how I had 20 minutes, whatever shitty lighting the arena had, alot of super green SD and Clean HD lenses mixed in with POV cameras and standard camcorders to match perfectly. With no cards or anything just my scopes and the shading boxes. Moral of the story, with a proper monitor and enough training you can eyeball anything to within a margin of error.
