- In this episode, Ryan and I detail 20 mistakes made by hair metal bands. These were decisions that possibly impacted an album, a career, the life of the band, or, in the most tragic situation, cost people their lives. We analyze situations involving AC/DC, Jani Lane and Warrant, Motley Crue, Van Halen, Great White, L.A. Guns, Def Leppard, Cinderella, Dokken, Tuff, Whitesnake, Judas Priest and more. Ah more hair metal talk. A favorite topic of mine. I'm only 42 but my parents used MTV as a babysitter when I was a very young kid in the 80s. Used to recycle cans to buy cassette and LP'S. I got into heaver stuff in middle school but my first record was pyromania

Having a dad to enjoy this metal with is fantastic! So fortunate my dad took me to so many shows and hauling my drums around to all of our shows.
Flick of the switch never struck a chord with me. Only the tune Guns for Hire.
But for recent albums, I've gotta say, I love Rock or Bust front to back.
From Stiff through Black Ice, it's a few tunes that stick out. But RoB, my sons and I love the whole thing. And that tour was the first time they got to see AC/DC, also a great thing.

Like what u said about the Crue's Primal Scream era. That was definitely a sweet spot. Their Castle Donnington set from that time was killer. I like the song Angela alot too even though the chorus sounds like Don't Go Away Mad haha

WHY are AC/DC mentioned as a "hair metal band" or between a podcast with a majority of hair/glam "metal" bands? Someone can explain me this absurdity?

Look, AC/DC is NOT a hair band. But if you think that a lot of fans of hair metal aren't also fans of AC/DC, you've got another thing coming. I love AC/DC--in my top 5 bands of all time. But I love hair metal as well. So, at times they tend to get lumped in in my videos. But, you know what Mick Jagger said, "It's only rock'n'roll... but I like it."

Before that album by Tuff came out, for a handful of years, every time a mag like Metal Edge would give the band a preview, it was clear Stevie was a Bret Michaels clone. Every time Bret changed his look, Stevie purposefully matched it. They had a hilariously disastrous show at a club in Denver for that tour and I conned a pal into yelling, "Play some Poison, Bret Michaels!" They were kind of laughed off the stage after that. Tuff never stood a chance without a unique persona, especially in '91.
I like Tuff a lot, but, yes, 1991 was too late in the game for them. Thanks for stopping by.

@HairMetalGuru419 They didn't do much for me either when I first heard them. I did a re-listen to that album recently and it wasn't as bad as I remember, but not great. They've put out a few albums...not to familiar with those.
I remember this cassette back in the day the first 4 songs I really liked catchy and the guitar solo song my favorite was the song as far as the eye can see. But I can't take the high singing too much at a time.or at least he was but too high for me with not much variation.
Also forgot Tony harnell sang for skid row for a bit, never took the time to check some of those out

I was an OG fan from their EP. They were *so* underrated (and really nice guys, always down to hang with fans).
I think slave to the thrill was there best and last cd I think Doug Aldrich made them sound a lot better

I love Motley 94, but I agree with the point that it's not the Motley sound. They should have called it something else.
Generation Swine was a mess. Rewriting Shout?! I like all of 2 tunes, kinda.
New Tatoo was much more in Motley's style. It's just that they were all album deep cuts, no hits. Maybe some different production could have altered that. But that's pretty much the last album with MC styled tunes. Cuz I like SOLA, but that's Sixx AM music with Vince on vox.
I really like 94, but Generation Swine is like 10 pounds of shit in a 9 pound bucket.

1st thing I noticed was AC/DC on the picture, now waiting to see how/why they are featured in the thumbnail.
Another great video Guru! I am wondering however, why again was Adrenalize considered a mistake? It obviously didn't sell like Hysteria did. If it had, they would have probably been the first band to have 3 diamond albums in a row, a nearly impossible feat. I agree, Lets Get Rocked definitely seemed out of place with the climate of music at the time (grunge). Def Leppard didn't have a crystal ball. If they would have changed their sound in a more grunge vein, then people would have complained about that as well.
As for Cherry Pie, the video certainly didn't help them to be taken more seriously. It was over the top cartoonish. Looking back, I think the video harmed them more than the actual song. Uncle Toms Cabin is a badass song and I wonder what would have happened if it was the lead single and title of the album, just like you have mentioned.
Hey, man, I completely get it. And I didn't say Adrenalize was a mistake, I said that waiting 5 years was a mistake... if it had come out even one year earlier I think it sells at least 5 million. That being said, I do think the record company was pretty disappointed with triple platinum, I mean, shit, they sprung for SEVEN SINGLES on that thing. 100% agree, couldn't get into Heartbreak Station. While the songs were okay they sacrificed too much heaviness and just took the horns and whatnot way too far. Something a little more in line with their first two records could've been huge for them. Enjoyed this, fun video cheers from Down Under \m/
It wasn't the 3rd generation hair metal bands that killed the genre - it wasn't grunge. It was the fact that MTV and the magazines abandoned the genre in favour of grunge bands that killed it.

I've been enjoying your videos. I graduated the same year, so a little common ground. I was thinking that an topic could be album/cd/cassette covers(like the artwork, not song covers), both good and bad. But not just as a matter of taste or preference, but the positive or negative impact they might of had for the band. A really cool (I'll say album although it was mostly cassette for me at the time)cover has a way of drawing you to it, both in a record store(when that was a thing 🤣😭) and in a collection. And a bad cover can totally have the opposite effect. And there are some really bad ones. And it seems (to me) that especially around '91/'92 or so(and into the 90's), there were some especially bad covers, both by new and established bands, whether it was from the bands' input, the label, or whatever. I just get curious sometimes if and how much a record's sales and popularity might be at least somewhat affected by how cool or atrocious the cover/artwork is. Anyway, thanks and keep up the good work!
Still remember seeing Danger Danger live on their debut album tour, but mostly because they were the third act opening for KISS (Hot in the Shade tour) and Slaughter (Stick It to Ya).
I like 'em, I just think that wasn't the place to be getting fans for them.
I was more focused on Slaughter being on that tour... two former Vinnie Vincent Invasion members opening for KISS, who wouldn't even allow VVI to say the name "KISS" live on stage, even when they covered Lick It Up.
(I saw VVI not long before their breakup. I'd originally worn a KISS shirt to the show, switched to a VVI shirt. Mark goes "We're gonna do a song by Vinnie's last band, we can't say their name..." . I held up the KISS shirt I'd taken off. Mark reached down, took the shirt and held it up instead of saying "KISS". And yeah I got the shirt back, hehe.
I met Vinnie after the show, standing outside his tour bus... or I should say, leaning on his bus. He was very, very intoxicated or high or something. Would never have guessed since his guitarwork during the show was amazing.)

Rather than releasing Subhuman Race Skid Row should have waited out the Grungepocalypse and taken more time. To me Subhuman Race feels like it's not quite finished. It also feels like Skid Row was trying to add a grunge sound to their sound. There are a couple good tracks but to go so far from the original album was a huge mistake.

Danger danger does have a good catalog of ballads , Ted poley is a fun dude and great songwriter . I would highly recommend his work in Tokyo motorfist if you haven’t checked out those 2 albums 🤘

Pretty sure "Women" got the first single treatment because, at the time, they were known for Pyromania and songs like Photograph and Rock of Ages. Women is the only song on Hysteria that comes even close to sounding like their '83 masterpiece. I think the idea for that song was more to "transition" into what is a very different sound, not necessarily be the biggest hit.
It worked for me, at least. I had the Women single (which included that frikkin' awesome original version of "Tear It Down" as a b-side, not the watered down Adrenalize version of it), and for a while I had no clue their sound was changing so much. Then the actual album came out, Rocket was the second song in album listening order... I think there's a lot of thought in transitioning their fans to the newer sound in the order that things were done for it.
Completely valid point you brought up. I thought "Animal" should have been the first single, but, shit, they went with "Women," and it fuckin' worked, so what do I know? Thanks for watching, brother.

that album was silly. cmc would only sign them as la guns, and that record was supposed to be the 2nd killing machine album. tracii agreed to do the album as la guns because he owned the name with riley, and they could make more money.
that thing was recorded in two weeks with almost no real production value.

Hey there. I would like to comment on the Def Leppard: Adrenalize section. The reason that album took so long was, following the Hysteria tour, the band had a considerable respite period. (The most they’d done, pre-respite, were demo some of the songs mid-Hysteria tour.) It really was meant to be a quicker album. However, during the post-tour break, Steve Clark’s drinking became more extreme. 1990 rolls around and the band seriously knuckled down on recording the album. However, due to alcoholism, a lot of Steve’s takes were subpar. Steve’s struggles saw him in and out of rehab, there were drinking relapses, and the band were constantly worrying about him. Come September/October, of 1990, the band gave the impression things were going well. That was by necessity because, following of the alcohol problems, the band gave Steve a 6 month leave of absence. Unfortunately, due to a fatal mix of alcohol, anti-depressants, and painkillers, Steve passed away of January 8th 1991. Following Steve’s death, it was up to Phil Collen to do double guitar duty; he had to record Steve’s parts and his own. Then, they ended up expanding the album with “White Lightning” and “Let’s Get Rocked.”
I apologise if I’m repeating things you guys already know. I am only commenting because Adrenalize’s development was a struggle. It wasn’t all down to just bad timing.
I saw Pantera play in Dallas in 1985. Weird looking dudes back then even after all you`d see there. LOL! When they came in I elbowed my coworker, "Have a look at THIS, Al..." I thought they were Punk Rockers. Ha! But we didn`t forget their name afterwards. Darrell made sure of it. I was there working from Louisiana.
Cinderella is a great band. LCW is my fav, but I love the debut as well. They were a blues based hair band.
They probably upped the glam sound and look on the debut because at that time, if you weren't glam/hair or thrash, you had no entry point.
Cinderella, Tesla, LA Guns diminished the glam look pretty early on. Guns more to sleepy/Guns n Roses style.
Hell, Tesla dumped the hair spray by their 2nd video.

I never liked Lynch Mob as much as Dokken.
And the Lynch Mob basically did a rap metal thing(worse than American Hardcore). My pal worshipped Lynch. Saw that 'rap metal' tour, where they openly dissed Dokken music.
George was such a talent, but that kind of Hypocrisy burns your faith and trust.
Then he's back in Dokken, Dysfunctional doesn't do well, and George wrote that horrible Shadowlands.
Don's post George albums are all better than those couple with George when he came back.
Skidz 3rd album wouldn't have done well regardless. The tides changed.
the fact that it got mtv plays for all three singles (albeit very few), an mtv news story (snowboarding with skid row), and a ton of euro and asian promotion…i would say it did pretty good for 1995. only bon jovi and firehouse really had as much coverage with always, and i live my life for you.
Established bands were a let down in the 80s. You guys mentioned WASP and Motley. I would add Twisted Sister "Love Is For Suckers" and BOC 'Club Ninja' were also major mistakes.AND:

Yeah, I think "Love is For Suckers" was talked about in one of the hair metal flops videos? BOC was probably just too late in the game. Triumph... I heard Rik feels he should have bailed before Surveillance. As for the other albums, I LOVE Helix's "Wild in the Streets." For some reason I can't get into "Strength" from EZN for some reason. Remembering college days trends, Rolling Stone told me to listen to Echo and the Bunnymen along with Utopia. I was listening to Gamma and Judas Priest so I didn’t fit in at dorm dances. I STRONGLY disagree with saying a triple platinum album is a flop relative to Hysteria. (And I don't like Adrenalize).
The album after Dark Side of the Moon, Back in Black, the black album', hell.. even Thriller from MJwas gonna sell less.
All time best sellers, bands' individual high points... they wouldn't be that if everything maintained or climbed after.
I don't like Adrenalize, but i wouldn't call it a flop.
1:30:00 - Bed of Roses (which is my favorite from Cherry Pie) would have been a killer single as well. Another big disaster to come from the song Cherry Pie that greatly affected Jani's life was meeting Bobbi Brown. As hot as she was is as toxic as she was. Was? Who am I kidding? probably still is. :p I'm not saying he was 100% innocent, but a situation like that doesn't help a guy who already has something going on.

I actually have an album flat for American Hardcore signed by the band after seeing them on this tour. I think I listened to the actual album ONCE ever.
You guys know that 'Diamond' wasn't a thing back in 88, right? That designation didn't come til much later.
I don't blame Priest for turning down the movie. Reckless is probably the best song on Turbo. Top three anyway. It's certainly one of my favorites.
Still Climbing is a great return to form for Cinderella. It's a great and terribly overlooked album by them.
Up From The Ashes a better Dokken album than any actual Dokken album that came after it. Not a bad song on it.
'Black Hearted Woman' is the best song Whtesnake never wrote. Switch out the singers and it's a Whitesnake song. I can almost guarantee it was a riff that got left off the S/T album.
Yeah, American Hardcore is shit. Reckless best song on Turbo? Maybe, but it would have served the band better if it had been on Top Gun--all the exposure would have been pricless. Hey, thanks for sharing all your thoughts, I really appreciate it.

Flick of the switch by AC/DC in my opinion is AC/DC's best album ever! I don't go by radio hits or dance clubs that play You shook Me All night Long, over and over again. Flick of the switch is hard rock verging on heavy metal. To me. It's their best album they've ever made. I mean I know girls or women who got back in black in their collection but have no other AC/DC albums at all in their collection alongside Madonna Prince Hall& Oates, Bryan Adams, Cyndi lauper and yet they have back in Black. Just because something is popular by the masses, Doesn't mean it's the best album. Flick of the switch is absolutely amazing!

I must be older than these guys, as AC/DC has never been hair metal, always been blues based hard rock and is why they lasted so long and hair metal died in 1990. How anyone could call them hair metal is absurd.

Tuff 1st single was a major mistake. All New Generation was the and should have been the obvious choice. I think management had a call to strike quick.
tuff was late to the party, and while they had some talent and image, they just weren’t original enough of a sound for mtv to hold on to. i doubt a different single would have changes anything for them.
stevie’s story about getting dropped is crazy. the label wanted them to record with firehouse’s producer, and stevie pushed back. they were dropped the next day for pushing back. may have gotten a second record if they did what they were told.

Outside of Dirty Water Dog, VH III sucked. But the tour was great. Cherrone did really good with both the Roth and Hagar material

The song Cherry Pie was like a horny version of Living Colour's song Cult Of Personality

Skidz.... I love the first two, and really like Subhuman Race. But, anything after is garbage. At least until the last album, which unfortunately fell apart for other reasons.
Maybe I like Subhuman because I'm not locked into Hair Metal. I love all kinda metal. I perfectly understand that if hair stuff is your primary true love, you won't like Sub.
I thought Pantera affected Slave more than Sub.
I love a lot of shit that isn't hair metal, but Subhuman Race... yikes. I like heavy stuff, but that went way beyond what I'm into.

Make time for both. AIC is one of my all time bands. I only like a few tunes from Warrant, but I thought they got screwed.
Uncle Tom's Cabin is a fukkin Metal song, period(and Mr. Rainmaker was very cool too). They wrote some cheesy garbage I didn't like, but also some absolute gems.
us as fan's, are rational, and it is much harder for us to also rationalize why things we like, everyone doesn't. but music and labels are a business. just like cherry seven up, and pepsi zero, things get dropped for something shiny and new that will sell more units.
i agree...dog eat dog and aic could co-exist, but in the fickle, short term, they went with aic and sold way more units than they would have pushing warrant.
bon jovi, and van halen got pushes in the early to mid-90's, and even with mega radio hits like always, and to some extent humans being and what not, they still couldn't get a sales bump.
For the record Lillian Axe's drummer really hates that you refer to them as Hair Metal, and says it really hurts them business wise when people make that connection. Personally I love Lillian Axe but don't think they really fit with the Poisons of the world.
Flick of the switch was such a steaming pile of shite in 1983 that I never went back. Same story in 84 for Saxon with Crusader.

Hysteria. I love the tune Women, but it's an album cut.
I've never liked Rocket, and it's illegible words.
Gods of war is fantastic. Generally; on Pyro and hysteria I prefer the deep cuts.
VH3 didn't work. A lot of good parts, that led to very few complete songs.
Being a VH collector, I've got 3 on CD, tape and vinyl.
However live, Gary sang Dave and Sam tunes in equal measure(which Sam refused to do, and Dave can't do), and nailed both of them. I loved his vocals live, BUT.... he was very effeminate visually. I actively looked away, while listening intently.
But the vox are what mattered, and he mastered them.

i think if they had embraced an image that was more in line with red hot chili peppers, they may have had more relevance. they had bad tours as well, and they finally got an arena tour with ratt, but the time had passed. ratt was doing poor biz during that tour, and at that point it was too late. the third bang tango album, love after death, is awesome!

EXTREME - More than words video! I cringe even to this day watchin it. What were they thinking? Jump-the-Shark moment. Killed hair metal! That video made me hate Extreme! It made me feel weird and shameful. It made me feel embarrased to admit I was a hair metal fan. An acoustic song plus video (it did have guitar) but nevertheless just so wimpy and not glamorous, not fun and not even metal. By 1990 the door was closing on hair metal, thank you EXTREME for driving the final fu..kin nail in my coffin as a hair metal fan and i will forever hate you even more to my very end. lol TRUTH!

I never understand why people think subhuman race was a mistake? the album is the progression from slave to the grind, and a product of evolution for them. perhaps the only mistake they made was the producer, but keep in mind, what band was having slick production at that time?
the la guns album with van dahl was trash. absolute trash. van dahl wound up trashing tracii after he left. he said that it was a joke, and that the tour played to no more than 50-75 people at each gig. nobody wanted a pantera version of l.a. guns, and that was an absolute garbage production.
van halen 3....i've heard worse. it was never going to be accepted, but i will say this. the tour was awesome, and if you watch the live shows on youtube with gary singing, it was awesome.
i think an album that was a huge mistake was the poison album hollyweird. if they had gotten a producer capable of being more than a yes man for bret michaels, they could have had a real shot at coming back in 2002. if they had gotten butch walker to produce, used a real studio and not someone's basement recording place, and perhaps used some writing help (not just re-written 10 versions of ride the wind and fallen angel), i think they could have gotten capital to not pass on the record, and had a charting album. it wouldn't have been on an aerosmith or bon jovi scale, but i think it could have given them some relevance outside of the touring market. everything about hollyweird was a dropped pass. recording was trash, writing was trash, and the fact that it wasn't easy to find in stores hampered it.

@@docvader82 it so true. if poison was packing sheds at 18,000 like pine knobb in 1999 and 2000, had put a really freaking solid record out, with a single that had radio in a lot of mid-west markets (where a lot of these bands had a base of radio and concert attendance), they could have had solid placement on the charts around 30-50 for a month or so, and then released a second single of similar ilk, who knows what could have happened. that same time period had motley a few years later with "if i die tomorrow", which gained vh1 play (something poison was getting at a similar time with a live in studio performance)...it was a wasted opportunity.
i am almost positive that this is why bret chose to run out on the band and start doing crappy solo shows and that dumb reality stuff. he wasn't going to get it recording his crap songs with crap production, so he had to find another means, leaving poison behind.

I have a question. I agree with a lot of these. But why does Ozzy Osbourne and KISS always get a pass by fans? They treat band members or fans like crap yet they maintain their popularity.
I don't really understand the whole Cherry Pie thing. It is an arena rock song, shallow with sexual lyrics. It is what it was supposed to be. He proclaimed to hate it, but promptly wrote other songs just like it. There isn't a whole lot of difference between it and Machine Gun and Bonfire on the next album other than the fact they were not nearly as popular. I mean (She's my Cherry Pie. Cool Drink of Water. Such a sweet surprise.) to (Lick it off your fingers. Taste it on my tongue. Love you Little Baby Like a Mamamamachinegun) or (She's lean, probably take on the whole football team) are pretty much in the same shallow sexual lyrical range surrounded by stadium chants. So did he really hate it or was it just an excuse for someone that was self destructive and needed one when the next album failed. I'm no psychologist but it never made sense to me really. I could be wrong. Wouldn't be the first time.

There's a drastic evolution from Too Fast For Love to Dr. Feelgood but they always maintained their sense for good melodies and riffs in the 1980s. From '94 on they've been obsessed with zigging instead of zagging. It sounds forced and fake and it doesn't appeal to anyone.
Flick of the Switch and Fly on The Wall are great albums don't care what anyone says otherwise.
I like Flick, and I really like Fly. Shit, I'm an AC/DC guy... they could fart in a paper bag and I'd open it up to give it a listen.
American Hardcore was such a poor attempt to do groove metal.

Tuff sucked, one of the very few bands of the genre I didnt like, everything about them are derivative, the Bret Michaels clone, and "The All New Generation " ugh, every time I heard the line " Skid Row is the Youth Gone Wild" it makes me cringe... Their lack of success has nothing to do with Nirvana or being released in 91. They were just 3rd rate. My opinion.
And..."Adrenalize" a flop????!!! It went #1 in the US and in the UK, and in some markets it did better than "Hysteria".

I love subhuman Race but can see why people dont. The sound is one of a band getting caught between trying to be who they were on Slave and Grunge influenced and getting mixed results.

it also had a bit of a lyrical problem. lillian axe had a great songs, but their awful label IRS records couldn’t afford good producers, and the songs suffered from average lyrics that bad producers didnt say no to.

I personally don't think its that much heavier than Slave really... but yeah maybe more distorted. American Hardcore by L.A. *sorry* the L.A. Guns sounds like a bad local band. It was worth a shot but having heard it, it's safe to say the punk and hardcore scenes did not embrace them with open arms.
while van dahl was terrible in la guns, the cherry st album was good. he made a good career for himself in vegas as steven tyler in a aerosmith tribute band. he’s made quite a living for himself.
