Remember folks, these are supposed to be 'starter packs' for folks who have NEVER listened to the genre in question. Many people stating that 'x album or band isn't metal enough' are missing the point. All of these albums were considered metal or early metal back in the day, and for a complete newbie, are albums you need to have. Lots of bands being mentioned in the comments will show up in other shows, as I am looking got get in deep with all the sub-genres going forward.

@@wernermoritz882 "Heavy metal has long been impervious to cataclysmic intra-band events. One could argue that’s because most metal bands are forced to live in the moment: no sense daydreaming about chart success - there won’t be any. And stadium gigs are completely out of reach for all but a select few groups. Music videos? Pffft. So the problems that normally sidetrack rock and pop acts are dealt with by metal bands swiftly and efficiently.
There’s no better example of this fact than the Australian band AC/DC who, 40 years ago, released the most unexpected and important album in hard-rock and heavy-metal history: the appropriately titled Back in Black, which has sold upwards of 50 million copies worldwide."
"By some estimates, the movement [NWOBHM] spawned as many as a thousand heavy metal bands, but only a few survived the advent of MTV and the rise of the more commercial glam metal in the second half of the 1980s. Among them, Iron Maiden and Def Leppard became superstars, while Motörhead and Saxon also had considerable success."

PETE, this is going to be a great series brother! i might add, OR MAY I ASK Please, since this is going to be geared more to newbies i think it would be really helpful as well as insightful since your going to do sub-genres of metal like thrash, speed ,death metal etc. that you maybe also briefly explain what differentiates thrash from speed, or death from doom etc. ,i think that would really go along way for newbies just getting into metal, or prog, or fusion etc. because i know over the years that newbies can get overwhelmed ,or more so confused, about the differences between say thrash and speed metal and what differentiates the two sub-genres... hell, even us guys with and getting the "olds" might even learn a new thing or two as well, or at least get your opinion on what differentiates them from one another. i personally would really enjoy that ,but more so, i think the newbies would get a MUCH better picture of it all ,and whos to say, might even listen a little more in detail to them for those differences as well. just a thought but hope you will do that in the upcoming episodes, thanks as always for the content Pete!! \m/ \m/

Pantera is unambiguously a metal band. Surely you understand that thrash is within the metal genre (in fact it's on the heavier side of the metal spectrum, usually intermediary between traditional metal and more extreme metal).
As far as the groove element of their music is concerned, that style is literally referred to as groove metal.
ACDC is generally considered a heavy metal band, but even if you think they're more closely aligned with hard rock than metal, it's hard to argue that Back And Black isn't metal enough to include in a list of recommendations for people new to metal.

I'm not a newb (37 years old). But having played guitar and other instruments for 21 years across many genre's its fun to see how predictable or unpredictable this gets.
My greedy 'more than 10' list in no order:
(Honorable Brag: How will anyone know where to look?)
Pantera -- Projects In The Jungle (Own an official CD copy used from a Vinyl store.... and No I'm not crazy. Love it better than anything with Phil.)
Riot -- Thunder Steel (a 70's band got all thrashy....I inherited a promo poster of the album cover....Who the hell is Quiet? I'm only kidding!)
Exciter -- Heavy Metal Maniac (Damn I love this album. That and the drummer doing vocals. Triumph sometimes did that. Exciter did it as a norm until a little later. Love this album better than anything in the big four.)
Y & T -- Black Tiger (Dave Mineketti always seemed like Sammy Haggar with Eddie Van Halen's chops. Its a good thing. So is there 70's stuff.)
Yngwie J. Malmsteen's Rising Force (YJM is Reason I play guitar and shred. I even have a signature Fender scallop. Also Jens Johansson is a Keyboard influence.)
Fates Warning -- Awaken The Guardian (I first heard Specter Within. In any case. Prog fans will enjoy things in spite of the traditional feel).
Triumph -- Rock 'N' Roll Machine (This entire band was overshadowed. I love Alex Lifeson....But c'mon man. He ain't Rik Emit)!
Budgie -- Never Turn Your Back On A Friend (If its too 70's for them....Tony Bourge's 80's Tredeager: Remix Rebirth oughta do the damn trick)
Judas Priest -- Stained Class (This needs more respect....I still listen to it more than any of the later albums).
Scorpions -- Taken By Force (I saw Uli live in his solo band during 2017. It was like $25.00. But it was a $300.00 performance If I never see Scorpions live.... eh hard to complain considering the more rare experience I did get)!
UFO -- Force It (I often felt that this was the U.K. band that really should've blown up more than it did.)
Loudness -- Disillusion -- (Longtime Loudness and J-metal fan. Even before You Tube. X-Japan was my intro. I'd include them as well.)
    Van Halen -- (#1! And 2 ain't bad either.)
Thin Lizzy -- Thunder & Lightning (There will never be another Lynott, or Thin Lizzy. John Sykes is too underrated.)
Ozzy -- Tribute (What's a better album? Blizzard or Diary?.... The answer is Tribute!)
Iron Maiden -- Peace Of Mind (Steve Harris is when I decided to learn Bass starting with Killers. Peace Of Mind is just amazing.)
Running Wild -- Under Jolly Roger (We have new pirate metal bands now. But when I heard this in high school, I wondered when's the next?)
Helloween -- Keeper Of The 7 Keys Pt. 1 (Dragon Force fans need a history class....before they make the same mistake....)
King Diamond -- Abigail (I worked a decade at a Library. But even before that, I was a regular there. This album is the first I checked out. Educational shit to be honest....How they allowed an album like that to circulate? Won't question it!)

Thanks Pete for doing this series. I love progressive rock, jazz, and fusion but have always stayed away from heavy metal and progressive metal. It took me a long time to get into Deep Purple and early Rush.
However, I know there is music to appreciate that I haven't listened to or given a chance. I remember not liking King Crimson "Starless and Bible Black" but I would keep returning to the album every so often. Then one day the veil was lifted and suddenly I understood and connected with the music.
So thanks for doing the "starter packs" and providing a direction for people looking to explore further.

This is a cool topic which I have thought about sometimes. There are (at least) a couple of ways to approach this question: 10 albums that showcase "what is metal", or 10 "historically significant" albums from the more mainstram subgenres, that are also palatable for someone who has never listened to heavy music before.
My list is more towards the second interpretation:
    - Black Sabbath Heaven and Hell
    - Black Sabbath Paranoid
    - Iron Maiden Piece of Mind
    - Judas Priest Stained Class
    - Judas Priest Painkiller
    - Deep Purple In Rock
    - Rainbow Rising
    - Metallica Ride the Lightning
    - Dream Theater Images & Words
    - Haken The Mountain
Mostly obvious choices, nothing strictly extreme but some early thrash. Two bands appear twice because they exemplify two different styles to perfection. For maiden you can replace with any of the first 7 albums. Chose PoM because it is the first with the "full" lineup and immediately draws you in with a killer drum intro.

I'm guessing it has to do with what we were told by local music critics at our respective sides of the Atlantic ocean. Americans tend to include Hard Rock bands more often (AC/DC, Ted Nugent, Van Halen, Deep Purple (both VH and Purple DO have one or two songs I'd dare call Metal though), Led Zeppelin, sometimes even bands like Molly Hatchet,...).

These lists are always interesting more for the questions they raise than the suggestions they offer. For example, why include AC/DC, which most would classify as hard rock, or at this point, classic rock? More broadly, is the goal to pick historically significant albums, albums with a critical consensus for excellence, albums that might be palatable to someone coming from a particular genre? If I were to make a list like this, not knowing a listener's tastes or musical background, I'd probably pick things from across the years that hint at the full historical and musical range of metal, so extreme metal genres would necessarily be included to give an accurate picture of what metal can do musically. And you don't want to assume that the best entry into metal is music that is relatively tame and digestible. Someone into avant garde jazz or the more experimental forms of classical music might find Ozzy or Maiden a snooze but perk up to prog metal or some really abrasive black metal.

Looking forward to the rest of this series. I never considered myself to be a heavy metal fan per se (as in fanatic - I like good music no matter genre), but I have branched out into many subgenres from black and death metal, thrash metal, and progressive metal (and other subcategories). I listen to quite a bit of progressive rock and punk rock, so I have branched out to some interesting sub-metal bands. I was curious how many I would know from the "generic" heavy metal category. I know 7 albums really well (many that I own), and I have heard Pantera's album. I have own other Rainbow albums, so I look forward to hearing Rainbow Rising (which I know I've heard, but its been awhile). The only new item will be Mercyful Fate's album (I have heard a couple of King Diamond solo albums). I know music is all subjective, and there’s no definitive music bible or encyclopaedia as to what makes a band fit into a certain genre. Personally, I don’t hear any metal elements in
AC/DC’s “Back In Black”, musically and lyrically, except for maybe “Hells Bells”..?
I also would have left off “Blizzard of Ozz”, I think if a newbie has “Paranoid” and they dig it, they’ll eventually discover “Blizzard”, could have made room for another essential metal album.
Even though I’m not a fan of Mercyful Fate, I can understand why it was included, I’ve always found King Diamond’s vocals a bit of an acquired taste, just not for me 🤷🏻‍♂️

------------> About my list.. ----------> I put a few that some may say isn't metal.. Coz some newbies have to start out not so heavy and work their way up.. Plus back when this stuff was new it was called Heavy Metal.. Any mag of Metal of the day "Metal Edge" and "Kerrang" had all of them within it's pages.. Back in the day they would call BON JOVI Metal.. Now that is off base but they did.. Look at the Heavy Metal soundtrack that had Devo Stevie Nicks Cheap Trick And Open Arms By Journey on it.. NONE of that was Metal.. My Friends and I started a local radio show on collage radio called Metal Monday in 1984 and we had to play all over the board to satisfy every listener.. When it comes to Mercyful Fate it is all up to the newbie some can't take it and some can.. All according to the person.. It is a tricky subject.. I been listening to bands that most don't discover til they are 18 or so when i was 4 and 5.. Plus in a band for 25 years.. This is a show about newbies remember everyone is different in what they can start off with.. Some have to work their way up which is why i did it that way.. I knew a lot who had to start off with hard rock and move up.. i knew a lot of people who started out with Mercyful Fate and Venom.. But most of my picks are METAL!!!!!!!!!!!! PS kind of like Elvis Costello , Talking Heads and Blondie list goes on on and on are called Punk Rock.. Are they punk like Sex Pistols , Anti Nowhere League , Minor Threat , Dead Kennedys ect ect NO.. But they are still considered to be.. Music is in levels.. It is all according to the listener.. I learned that from radio and being in a band.. As Pete wisely says we all hear music differently.. People aren't all the same.. True and Nothing wrong with that.. Think of it , If someone can't take the hard rock of Kiss , Aerosmith , Deep Purple and even the Metal of Black Sabbath.. How will they be able to take Thrash ect ect?? That is why some not all have to start off Hard Rock and work way up.. If it is forced beyond what they can take at that time there will be no enjoyment or even headbanging.. LOL.. It is meant to bring people together not tear apart.. Not meant to fight over.. Enjoy music is what it boils down to in the long run..
