Welcome to my channel. They call me the Hair Metal Guru. My name is Anthony, and I'm a retired Army veteran and former high school English teacher who lives for music. Obviously the main focus here will be hair metal, and the content I plan on producing will run the gamut--there will be rankings of all kinds, reviews and commentary about albums or happenings in era of '80s hard rock, and commentary about bands current and past exploits. Does that mean I'll only talk about hair metal? Hell no. Could Bryan Adams creep into the conversation? Nirvana? Yes. But if you love hair metal, this is the place for you. Welcome to the show.
32 Vintage Framed Rock/Metal Ads & My Thoughts On Each
I've been a major framing kick lately. I have thousands of old magazines, and as a side business I sell vintage, framed music ads. Well, in the last week I've framed a ton of rock, metal, and hair metal ads, so I thought I'd show you some of them and give my thoughts on each one--there's about 32 framed ads here, so come along for the ride!

Man, I'm waiting for your video doing 'Wildside', they came late if not i think they can be bigger than GN'R. When can you do a video on them?
It ok to like Nelson, does not mean you're gay. I always wanted to be that Kid in the After the Rain video!!
“Music is my life everything else is a hobby” that is a great quote which I may borrow. Also side note where do you find this stuff
Great episode as always. Here's my ranking, but first I've got to say Infestation is one of the best comeback albums and it's a shame they never followed it up. Here's my rankings : 1. Out Of The Cellar 2. Invasion Of Your Privacy 3. Infestation 4. Dancing Undercover 5. Detonator 6. Reach For The Sky 7. Ratt 1999
Cool stuff. Are Guru tees and hoodies coming next?
PBF-LBWET. NOW YOU'RE SPEAKING MY LANGUAGE!!
I thought I was the only one who likes Burn Bitch Burn by KISS. Yeah Gene's lyrics are corny but it's a fun song about sex what do you expect?
It was a small grocery store called Ronnie’s in my small town . Go into the front of the store , had to go right , then it made a T . At that T was a small magazine stand . It was like 85 , 86 . The whole stand was nothing but BMX and Hair Metal . It was all I needed , my Mongoose and my music . I would get Metal Edge , Circus , Hit Parrader , Cream . The best was when Metal Edge would do the tribute to Motley Crue editions . I would read album reviews and such ,loved the interviews, didn’t matter if I was into the band or not .
Anthony this is James I'm gonna get alittle personal with this if I may but before I do my 3 favorite bands of all time are Black Sabbath Metallica And KISS My top 5 favorite Hair Bands are Motley Crue Dokken Warrant Great White Ratt This is the personal part my brother These videos bring back alot of memories for me I remember back in the 80s looking threw alot of these magazines with my brother and seeing alot of those adds for my favorite bands and to be honest it brought a tear to my eyes Anthony I know you where a school teacher this is the personal part I was bullied alot in school I was made fun of alot and if I did not have Hard Rock and Metal music in my life I probly would not hear today talking to you cause their where many of times I thought of ending it all cause I was tired of the constant verbal abuse music kept me out of trouble and it took My mind off the crap I was dealing with in my life and because of my music I am a better person today then I was back in high-school hard rock and metal music taught me it's ok to be diffrent and not to follow the norm thar everybody else was following Anthony thank you for these videos my brother they bring back so many memories and makes appreciate my favorite bands even more then I already do Anthony just thank you for everything you do and will do in the future keep on rockin my brother
17:03!!
“It’s Vain…fuck!” Wise words.
Non Stop To Nowhere and Friends were keepers from FP Whipped . Wake Me When It’s Over by FP maybe one of the greatest sophomore releases of the genre ..
Fun fact. The stick it to ya model was married to Robbin Crosby of Ratt.l
Going to the grocery store magazine rack and reading but not buying the latest metal magazines was a habit of mine when I was a teenager. (I did actually buy a few mags and kept them for years).
Psycho City released September 92. One of my favorite albums. Really no fillers. Have the same ad in my garage. Rock on 🤘🏻
Cool stuff
I was a big music magazine collector back in the late 80’s til about 2002. I wish I still had them, cause framing the ads is a cool way to show them off
I Bought many of mine again on ebay and now they sit in plastic sleeves in boxes and are never looked at. I think the idea is better than the reality in some ways!
What a cool idea. I really wish I'd thought of this.
First from France !!
first!
first!
1. Too fast for love 2. Shout at the devil 3. Dr. Feelgood 4. Theatre of pain 5. Girl, Girls, Girls 6. Motley Crue 94 7. Saints of Los Angeles 8. New Tattoo 9. Generation swine
Hey Charlie ,..you look like a good girl.❤
The B sides songs on Reach for the sky are awesome and better than the more popular songs ..
Def Lep’s “Adrenalize” is appallingly bad. Just a complete embarrassment.
As a Brit i find it hilarious that three hours away from you in the US is considered local. I live in the north west of England and three hours away is London, which is like another country! I like Icarus Witch but haven't heard that album. The only one i have heard is Rise.
My 5 off the top of my head? H.E.A.T - Address The Nation Wig Wam - Wigwamania Crazy Lixx - New Religion Pink Cream 69 - Thunderdome Nelson - Lightning Strikes Twice
I saw Ratt in Las Vegas with L.A. Guns. Ratt were a four piece. Michael Schenker walked on stage during "Round and Round" for the twin guitar solo. Then they finished off with a couple of UFO covers.
7. Ratt (1999) (I can only stomach 3 songs on this album. "Over the edge", "Live for today", and "Luv Sick". The rest are terrible.) 6. Infestation (2010) (I loved this when it came out. I saw Ratt tour this album with Extreme, but it has not aged well over time. "Eat me up alive", "Best of me" and "Lost Weekend" still hold up. The rest I don't care about any more.) 5. Dancing Undercover (1986) The middle 3 albums are all about the same for me. Dancing, Reach, and Detonator are solid with a lot of killer tunes, but not as good as Cellar and Invasion. 4. Detonator (1990) 3. Reach for the Sky (1988) 2. Invasion of your privacy (1985) Still firing on all cylinders! 1. Out Of The Cellar (1984) Every song is a classic!
1 out of the cellar 2 detonator 3 dancing under cover 4 invasion 5 reach for the sky 6 infestation 7 Ratt
BAM was a weekly free magazine/newspaper that we picked up at any record store in Southern California. There was a Northern California edition and a Southern California edition.
I go way back with RATT. I saw them early on in Southern California. Still love them today.
Wasn’t Ratt supposed to be a Percy solo album?
this was the original idea, then a major label offered them a chance, as long as they could get the original members (sans robin of course).
2 underrated ratt songs - nobody rides for free from point break movie soundtrack and you think your tough from ratt ep
Couple of thoughts... 1) To add some clarity, John Kalodner owned an imprint of Portrait Records in the 70s, and wanted to revive it with rock artists who he felt had the potential to have an Aerosmithian style comeback at the end of the 90's. He signed Ratt, Great White, Cinderella, LA Guns, The Union Underground, Mars Electric (Jacob Bunton who did the Adler vocals and some of Mick Mars), and CC Deville's Samantha 7. Kalodner tried to wrestle Poison out of their Capital Records deal, but Capital wanted an ungodly amount as they still had rights to three more records that became the double greatest hits record, and the covers album Poison'd. Ratt, Great White, Union Underground, and Mars Electric released albums, but L.A. Guns got dropped for BS between the members (not before Tracii got paid an advance and bought a Harley that got repo'd), and Cinderella wound up with issues in their contract that prevented them from releasing any of the demo material ever as Cinderella. This is part of the reason there was never another Cinderella release. Some of the songs written for the record wound up on the first Keifer record, but Tom is not allowed to discuss the situation due to a settlement he was paid by Columbia records (where Portrait was housed). Of the two records, the Ratt album did nothing, while the Great White album saw some radio airplay, and was helped by a successful tour opening for Poison with LA Guns (that had Jizzy), Ratt (album hadn't come out yet). Rolling Stoned actually charted on the rock radio charts, but not with enough success for Columbia to continue the contract when Portrait folded. 2) Ratt's album with Portrait came with a lot of issues. Kalodner was a stickler to have original members, however there was no working with Juan at the time due to the beef between him and Demartini, Blotzer, and previous lawsuits. Then when they finally presented the album to Kalodner, it kept getting rejected for weak material. Kalodner wasn't keen on the fact that they had released the Collage album on their own while talks were being had to sign them. He also lost faith when he saw how poorly that sold. The Ratt self title was dead on arrival with most of its album sales being to BMG, and Columbia House (yes, these albums count in the sales as a bulk sale to those companies. Its sad to realize that this accounted for a lot of the album sales, as nobody really actually bought them. 3) The Portrait Records piece got some traction with Metal Edge and other magazines, and really was brought on by the success of the Poison reunion tour in 99, and the behind the scenes success that the 96 Poison Greatest Hits album got. Kalodoner wanted the rights to the Crack a Smile Record, but Capital wouldn't budge.
1. Cellar 2. Invasion 3. Dancing Undercover 4. Infestation 5-8. Reach for the Sky, Denotator and 99 LP all interchangeable And I'll throw Collage into the mix too. Loved it. Was some much needed RaTT droppings in 97.
Not sure if life was any easier but the soundtrack to it sure was better.
I'd love to see a Twisted Sister round table.... probably my favorite band of that era!
‘94 is clear cut #1 imo musically and lyrically I agree with J , GGG’s sucks lol
I discovered Ratt as a teenager in the mid 2000s, Stephen Pearcy's voice was so freaking cool, I had to get an album! 7. Infestation A good album, but the one I connected to the least 6. Reach For the Sky Half the songs are awesome, half are forgettable, production is lacking 5. Detonator Production is back, it's gritty sounding and Stephen's voice sounds amazing 4. Ratt Yes I like this one, despite it sounding the least like Ratt. I think alot of the songs are really good though! 3. Out of the Cellar Classic, not much more I can say about it! 2. Invasion of Your Privacy Love it! Some underrated gems on this album and my favorite production for a Ratt album. Guitars are gritty, Stephen is gritty, great stuff! 1. Dancing Undercover Song for song, my favorite Ratt album, though the production is a little too polished, If it had Invasion's grit, it'd be perfect!
Guru , horns belong in metal , get some class 🤣🤘 Let’s go Hawkeyes ! And detonator #1 for me I like ‘99 for what it is , luv sic is a great song Infestation came out when I was 18 and still didn’t connect with me , it’s deserves to be at 6 or 7 tbh
I still have some Metal Edge and RIP magazines
It sucks that m-tv is a joke anymore for so many years, I used to rush home before headbangers ball to watch heavy metal 1\2hour and then watch headbangers ball every Saturday night and if I was out in about Iwould record it on my VCR the go ol days when music was music
What makes dancing undercover album cover is that it's a play off the original ocean's Eleven movie poster with Frank Sinatra Sammy Davis etc
For me: 1. Out of the Cellar 2. Invasion of Your Privacy 3. Dancing Undercover 4. Infestation 5. Detonator 6. Reach for the Sky 7. Ratt
Vince Neil sucked in 1989…dude struggled back then.
The rotund guy considers Maiden to be hair metal? lol.
No, he doesn't. We've said numerous times in our videos that even though the channel is called Hair Metal Guru and I usually title the videos something related to hair metal, we often cover bands that we explicitly do NOT think are hair metal. AC/DC are not hair metal. Iron Maiden is not hair metal. It's probably my fault for being unclear about this, but most of my videos are all about hair metal, heavy metal, hard rock, and even AOR.
Another great roundtable discussion! I love Ratt, so this was super hard to rank, but my ranking is: 1)Out of the Cellar 2) Invasion of Your Privacy 3) Dancing Undercover 4) Reach for the Sky 5) Detonator 6) Infestation 7) Ratt I had not planned on ranking the first 5 in the order they came out, although I knew the first two would be ranked where they were at. Honestly those original 5 are so classic, and as was said in the video Infestation was really great too.
I recently found u channel and whar caught my attention was u support of Lillian Axe because I have many memories of the years with Ron Taylor from his time with Bittersweet, to Stiff, then Lillian Axe, The Bridge, and most recently Ron and Darren Delatt still play together abd re ord together . Ron has one of the best voices and is a great performer. He still sounds great now a days as well. It is a shane because of lack of support from 2 re ord companies and many people missed out on o e of the best hair bands ever. RIP Jon.
2 a couple months away from the Seattle sound
