The Hair Metal Guru
United States
Приєднався 3 лип 2023
Welcome to The Hair Metal Guru. My name is Anthony, and I'm a retired Army veteran and former high school English teacher who lives for music. Obviously the main focus here will be hair metal, and the content I plan on producing will run the gamut--there will be rankings of all kinds, reviews and commentary about albums or happenings in era of '80s hard rock, and commentary about bands current and past exploits. Does that mean I'll only talk about hair metal? Hell no. Could Bryan Adams creep into the conversation? Nirvana? Yes. But if you love hair metal, this is the place for you. Welcome to the show.
10 Things I Think I Think About... Saigon Kick
They got labeled as hair metal and as a ballad band... and neither label was deserved. In this episode I discuss the band Saigon Kick, a band who deserved so much better in the grand scheme of '90s rock 'n' roll, yet somehow ended up being a so-called one hit wonder. Let's dive in deeper into the career of... Saigon Kick.

I LOVE Hair Metal. But as the scene was dying in the early '90s, although I still kept up with my favorite 80s bands, I also found new artists to connect to. And that's what this video is about: 5 albums that were not hair metal that grabbed me in the early 1990s albums from Collective Soul, Soul Asylum, Gin Blossoms, Drivin' N Cryin', and Toad the Wet Sprocket. So what you're saying is I should order The Lizard by Saigon Kick from Utopia Records so I can have it here in West Australia? Great idea. I like Hostile Youth!
Man, that's a tough take! I adore the old Whitesnake. Try the Live In The Heart Of The City album over any of the studio albums any day.
Personally, I've never been a major Whitesnake fan. I love '81s Come And Get It then skip to '84s Slide It In and of course '87 and Slip Of The Tongue. Everything else is hit or miss. Mostly miss with weak songs or subpar cover songs. Even the early versions of "Here I Go Again" or "Crying In The Rain" don't cut it after hearing '87.
You wierdo, haha.
Debut album was an absolute masterpiece. I’ve always wondered to myself if I was the only person who caught The Beatles sound. Excellent video and thank you for giving this band some love.
Great band.
Guru, you have no blues in your soul. But I half agree with you - Whitesnake started at The Ready & Willing album.
I tried to like their old stuff, I found it okay. Slide it in is where they start crankin out bangers for me though
Same
Should I go see them at a small local club on Feb. 13th?
Hell, yes, I wish I could! Where is it at?
Like the show. Although I do have The Lizard, I never really got into their music. Hostile Youth is one badass song tho !! Keep the content coming Guru & take care.
Oh dear, I'm so sorry for you. I like old, mid and newer Whitesnake. One of my favorite bands …
I'm trying! I'm good with Slide It in and after, but that earlier stuff that's organ heavy has been difficult.
@@HairMetalGuru419 That could be the reason. I really like the Hammond sound. And I actually almost prefer the organ to the keyboard carpets (like on 1987 or Slip Of The Tongue). It's good that there are different tastes and I respect your opinion.
This album helped me get through the writing and research process of my senior Economics thesis over the course of my senior year in 1994-1995. I’d pop this tape into my boom box, hit play, and get to work writing on my Apple Macintosh (remember those?). The Lizard holds a very special place in my heart for all the fond memories and long hours spent listening to that album front to back that academic year.
I hear you, man, I was in college then as well. I probably spent more time drinking to The Lizard than doing homework to it, but I get your point.
Yea, if you're not into bluesy music, the old Whitesnake stuff is not gonna be appealing. The older Whitesnake stuff is bigger in the UK, but I'll take the US version of Slide it In and the 87 album any day
Man, I'm good with Slide It In and after, but the earlier stuff with all the blues and organ... fuck, that stuff is killing me. I'm trying, though, because Bryan wants to do a Whitesnake video. See what I do for that guy?
@@HairMetalGuru419give him a break bryan.
I have several songs from #TheLizard thumbed but not 'Love is on the Way' :D Not sure I want to thumb it now I have listened again, either :D
Haha
You know what… it’s so hard to get a hit… even if my band only got one song on the chart and it was a ballad I’d still be ecstatic about it… they certainly were better than what they got though
I COMPLETELY GET YOU. So many bands never even SNIFF a hit, so, yeah, I can't imagine turning it down. But, you're right, they had stuff that was so amazing, I just wish it had been given a chance.
Cool. I have #TheLizard CD as part of my work desk wall, right in front of me right now. A few of these on the verge bands got lumped into hair metal but were a lot more. Even Ugly Kid Joe. Warrior Soul (Stooge-like riffs) and I Mother Earth even copped such treatment.
You're exactly right on UKJ and Warrior Soul. I know of I Mother Earth, but can't remember listening to them--I should check them out again. Thanks for watching, Brother!
Nice to see some love for Saigon Kick, one of my favorite bands from that period. Water had weird stuff on it, but it grew on me over the years. Devil In the Details is really good and deserves more attention. When I saw them at L’Amour in Brooklyn , a band called T-Ride opened for them and killed. That’s a band you should check out. They only had one release, but they were unique.
Damn, I know of T-Ride. Sure I've listened to them at some point, but I have to revisit. And I should've mentioned Devil in the Details, at least to mention how shitty that album cover was. Some decent stuff on that album as well. Hey, thanks for the support, Brother!
You should at least give Saints and Sinners a chance, it's kind of like a bridge between the old stuff and Slide It In on up.
Fuck, okay, I'll give it a shot.
He is right, saints and sinners is almost like slide it in. I don’t listen to any albums before saints.
@@HairMetalGuru419 the original Here I Go Again and Crying In The Rain are on Saints and Sinners. But they sound different.
Lol 😂 yes!!!
Finally, someone gets me!
Cool interview. Saw these guys on the tour in support of the first record at a place called Fat Jaks in Council Bluffs, Iowa. Loved this band back then.
Wow, I would have loved to see one of those early shows. I've actually never seen them live--uggh. Anyway, thanks for watching, man, I appreciate it!
I had a song free with kerrang or metal hammer. '' What do you do? '' that was a good song at the time. It had a bit of attitude.
Yep, that's on the debut album. Cool tune
Check out the BLOODY MESS album Dark Daze Unfazed! He does a tribute song to Michael Monroe that i think everyone watching this channel will love ! The album also features members of The Plasmatics.
Definitely a chameleon band. Very mal-defined due to their big hit.
Man, you are totally correct. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.
Thank you for your service to our country brother!
Spot on with your assessment of Saigon Kick… I grew up near Tampa, FL and the local radio station helped break them back around 1991… That same station also helped break Sleez Beez… their video for Stranger Than Paradise was filmed at the Tampa Theatre… cheers!
Hey, that's awesome info, man. I'm a HUGE Sleeze Beez fan as well. Unfortunately, neither band got the credit they deserve, but at least Saigon had a major hit once. Hey, thanks for watching, Brother, I appreciate it.
I've gone to see Lillian live since the Circus Comes to Town days, pre-record label. Hands down, still my favorite band.
Wow, that'a amazing! Hey, thanks for watching, man, I appreciate it.
Ok Man im starting to think We are ALOT alike!! Wow i LOVE SAIgon kick!!! Other than lillian axe they were my fav. And wow the Lizard and Water i Love those Albums
Hey, Shawn, that's awesome, man! I love to hear that shit. And thanks for watching, Brother.
Another cool episode bud. Hey, I'm sure they have an album called 'Devil In The Detail's" released in 1995
Sure did! I saw the tour. There are 3 more after that. "Bastards" (#5), "Moments from the fringe" (#6 - A collection of demos), and the Live album which was a cash grab by drummer Phil V.) Worst production ever.
Yep, and I should've talked about it... if anything, I should've at least mentioned that that album cover is one of the worst of all time. haha. There is some solid stuff on that album as well. Hey, man, appreciate you watching!
I always liked What You Say since I saw the video on HBB back in the day.
Man, I fuckin' LOVE that song.
I love SAIGON KICK!!! I've seen them live many times. I'm going to see the "Water 30th anniversary" show in February at the Whiskey. Great band!!!
Never seen them live... I wish! Have a blast at the show, Brother, that sounds amazing.
Finally got to watch the whole interview, that was top notch! It was awesome hearing all those amazing Lillian Axe stories from Steve!
Thanks a ton, Matt! This interview was a blast to have--I mean, hav eyou seen a more positive and engaging guy than Steve Blaze? Unbelievable. Thanks for your support, Brother!
This was like watching the Trump, Rogan interview.. Couldn't finish it at once but knew I would watch it all when time permitted. Thanks guys. Legendary. Always hoped for a Stryper, Lillian show.
I appreciate it, man, seriously! I'd love to talk to Michael Sweet at some point--who knows? Thanks again for support!
Spot on! Saigon Kick had so many different sounds, Atlantic Records had no idea how to market them. Songs like Hostile Youth, What You Say, and One Step Closer are so good, it's unfortunate that the ballads were pushed more heavily by the label, even though they are good ballads. Warrior Soul is another major label band that I wish would have been marketed better from that time period.
You're completely right, Matt. They came out in 1991--the transition year between hair metal and grunge. They might've been better off if their debut came out in 1992 than '91. They might have had more of a shot. So many great songs, but so many just know the ballad. Kinda sad. Thanks, Brother, you're the man!
Great interview
I appreciate it, man, seriously
Soo many good songs on Womb..golden dragon and feelings of Absynth my 2 favorites
Yep, completely agree
What a nice guy! And great interview Guru!!!
I appreciate it, Brother! You're right, he's just a solid guy, man
Excellent interview, been a Lillian Axe listener since the 80's until today. Have got to meet Steve multiple times and is always great with the people.
He's just an awesome dude, seriously. Hey, man, thanks for watching and the kind words, I appreciate it!
🤣 But hey, sleeping with a dog is the best. I miss it.
i'm overjoyed to see that both of you got to speak with the man who created years of musical enjoyment, and the soundtrack to so many of your memories. he was fantastic to take the time, go in-depth, and answer the questions that you have had for years. what a moment, and i hope you both savor it for a long time. i'd love to have that moment with a lot of artists, especially snake and rachel. would love to hear the stories behind a lot of the songs they created. great work guys!
It still seems unreal!
Wasn't that amazing? Never imagined we'd be chatting for two and a half hours. Man, I am right with you. I'd love to hear Snake and Rachel's story, from beginning to end. Thanks for all your support, Brother.
Great interview Gentleman, and Steve!!! I still contend that Grunge did not kill the 80’s Metal scene, I think MTV and radio stations did and not sure why but that’s my gut feeling. I think Steve confirmed that that very few 90’s bands touring compared to 80’s metal.
Appreciate it, Christopher! You're right, there were a lot of factors that led to the downfall of hair metal. Thanks for watching, man!
I'm so glad the Guru is a Saigon Kick fan, I was actually gonna ask one day for an album ranking of their albums haha
Hopefully this helps, Lucas! I fuckin' love this band. Admittedly, I need to spend some more time with the Devil In the Details album... for the record, one of the points I should have made is that the cover of that album is fucking horrible. haha. Thanks, Brother!
Most people don't even know about the other albums. "Bastards" and "Moments from the fringe" ... and avoid the live album that Phil put out. It's awful!!!
@@hardrockingtriviashow667 I should've at least talked about "Devil In the Details"... if anything to remark on how horrible that album cover is.
It hurts my soul a little to see how great things used to be. Damn I'm old
Kind of a shame a band this versatile would get lumped into a dying genre. They truly are great. Man I gotta revisit water, I didnt even know they changed vocalists.
Yeah, it sucks to say it, but being labeled hair metal was a curse for a long time. And definitely check out "Water." There are a few cringey songs in it, but a ton of really great stuff as well. Bieler does great on vocals. Thanks, Brother!
Look at the Guru's eyes light up when Steve mentions 'The Day I Met You'. I have heard him talk about this song before :)
Haha, you saw that? You're right, I have talked about that before--man, that song deserved a mass audience. Appreciate the support, Brother!
I must admit, I know the name, but I heard nothing of these guys in Australia. I saw them mentioned in metal mags in the day, but never saw their vids or heard their songs when I was into this stuff. I have since listened to a few songs and think I had better take a deeper dive. Steve comes across as a genuine dude and this was great listening/viewing. His analogies are fantastic! Not much of an 'interview' - you guys had trouble getting questions in - Steve just went with it and was so open and kept going. Congrats on the channel and well done. 7Rock
7Rock!! I appreciate it, Brother. Start with "Love and War" and "Poetic Justice" as the first two albums I'd recommend. You're right, he kind of ran the interview, we just kind of listened and asked for clarification from time to time. But it was awesome!
Lmfao! 😂😂😂😂
;-)
This was the best interview I have ever seen regarding Lillian Axe. The most in depth complete history of this band. The 1st mention of origins when Stiff members joined the band. So Midwest musicians joined this New Orleans songwriter/musician to put out music that was way ahead of alot of music being released at the time!
Wasn't that amazing? I didn't know that stuff, either, but I'm glad he was so willing to go into all that detail. Amazing stuff!
Me too!!
You dirty dawg!
Really enjoyed this video, love the format. This is what I want to hear about on UA-cam, what other people think about music that I think about. Great stuff.
Great interview! I play in a band with Steve and I learned new things about him from this interview. He is exactly as you see him in this interview. He is an inspiring human being and has made me a better musician since I started playing music with him.
Wow, that's awesome! What band do you play in with him? Very cool
@@HairMetalGuru419 I play in a cover band called Sledgehammer with Steve, Mike Maxx, Danny King, and Brent Graham. We play around the New Orleans area.
Stevie blaze is a favorite of mine for many years
Same here, man. What a great dude and great player
