Jeff Carlisi was the lead guitarist & an original founding member of 38 Special. He was responsible for SO MANY of the band’s great signature guitar solos and licks, and he was also the co-writer of many of the bands top hits, including my favorite 38 special song, “If I’d Been The One,” from Tour de Force (1983). Jeff was with the band from 1974 - 1996. Jeff grew up and played in bands with most of the members of the original Lynyrd Skynyrd & 38 Special. The band’s first 2 LPs weren’t very successful, but their 3rd LP, Rockin Into The Night earned them their first top 40 single and sold 250K records. The band wound up selling over 20 million LPs.

I’ve been a huge .38 Special and Skynyrd fan since I was a kid and I’m not ashamed to say that I’ve stolen my fair share of Jeff Carlisi/Allen Collins and Gary Rossington licks. Just a phenomenal player with an amazing sense of Melody!

Just saw 38 Special in a small venue in Philly..sounded and looked great ..age means nothing where excellent talent is concerned..Mr. Carlisi..please come back to the group..they obviously have great guitarists ..but would be even better if you could see your way to come back..I say this as a 40 year fan..Many fans are out here that would so appreciate !!

I liked 38 Special as a young man in the late 70's. Wild Eyed southern boys was a very well produced piece of good rock.
My favorite guitarist ever! This man inspired me to learn the guitar which in turn gave me a career in music which has lasted over 30 years now. Thanks Jeff.
Also I was once fortunate enough to hold that Explorer of his. Can you imagine getting to hold your idols guitar? He's probably unaware of this but it did happen....lol

ARS were about to hit the stage and Barry Bailey's guitar tech was setting up so. I asked him what year was the LP Goldtop Deluxe, he called back to Barry and got that it's actually a 1968 1/2.
During the last tour with Ronnie Hammond on vocals, the band was at dinner and told the stagehand selling merch I really wanted to see the Goldtop. Lo and behold, he goes and gets a guitar case and hands me THE Deluxe. Not wanting to drop it, I got down on one knee and played it unplugged. It was like butter !
I grew up in austria and as a kid I loved 38special! Never stopped that's why I'm here today listening!

.38 Special has always been my favorite. Interesting story to tell about my appreciation of your contribution to a monumental moment of my life. I met a stunning young lady in 1989 by the name of Nannette. It was one of those moments in life that will live in my memory until my last breath. To make a long story short, I knew from the moment I laid eyes on her, I was determined to win and know her heart. After pursuing her for what seemed like an eternity, she agreed to a date. I had to make a good first impression, so I did what I thought was my best move. I put together a mix tape. We were having a completely awesome first date, when I suggested we listen to some music. The first two songs on the tape, Fantasy Girl and Like No Other Night. No lie Jeff. Needless to say, our first date lasted 32 beautiful years. In retrospect, it was the best move I ever made. I lived a charmed life for those 32 years thanks to those 2 songs. My daughter Nicole and I lost our beautiful Angel on July 31st of this year due to cancer. Her passing irreparably changed our life forever. Here's the catch Jeff, her appreciation of .38 Special's music was equal to mine from that first date. She also loved your guitar work on every single song. As she was passing, we were playing music for her. In the moment that I played Fantasy Girl for her, she smiled and left this world peacefully. I guess the song had a bigger impact on her than I originally thought. It helped win her warm and loving heart, and allowed me to live a life full of love and wonder. I was a lucky man. I wanted to share this with you for many reasons Jeff, but mostly to truthfully let you know the impact and meaning your music had in both of our lives. I listen to .38's music now and it brings me comfort in the memories of my wife associated to almost every song. I once again offer kudos for your contribution to not only unforgettable music, but more importantly to the memories of my beloved Nannette. Thank you Jeff. Wonderful experience for me to have had the opportunity to converse with you and I am honored to have had this opportunity to briefly share our story. Music not only originates in the heart, it lives forever in the heart.

@@Meatball3800 Love you, Jeff! You're the reason I FINALLY learned Hold on Loosely! Your guitar lesson on that kicked me off and I took it from there. After a few decades i can finally play it note-for-note. But, in all seriousness, with all of the guitar solos out there, you ALWAYS had an emotional melody behind yours, much like Boston. You weren't just jamming on a minor pentatonic but playing a melody that grabbed heartstrings. Thank you for that. Those are the things that matter. That “different direction” is what made 38 special!!! Mr Carlisli is an awesome guitar player, seems like a really intelligent, articulate and honest person. This interview with Jeff validates what I thought about lynyrd skynrd back when I was a kid , that they may have been the best..talented.. band ever.
I slept outside at the New Haven Colosseum in New Haven, Ct. to get tickets for Skynyrd . Got the tickets, went home and later that day I heard the news about the crash. They were at that time and still are in my opinion one of the best bands ever. Such a loss to our world.
Definetely the most original and didn't get sewed dozens of times like Zeplin.
Anytime I hear someone talk about Ronnie van zant they have nothing but hood things to say about him. He's a legend and my hero

I was still waiting for it, nice guy but he rambled too much for me.
Ronnie was no angel to be sure, he was a real booger sometimes.. but if he was your friend you had a friend. I know some people who had known him before the crash.
@@hotwheel6663 My friends say he was cantankerous and loved to rile people up now and then and let things play out. I could be wrong or remember what I was told wrong. But, all in all.. I would have been able to get along with him, I was cut from the same kind of cloth. I was wild as hell back in those days.
One of my guitar hero's. Very underrated and as you can tell...just a humble everyday guy that has written and played AMAZING music. If you'd pass him on the street you'd never know he was/is such a great musician. Saw them in concert a couple of times back in their heyday. Not even sure he realizes how highly he is respected.

This was awesome. .38 was the first band I ever saw live in concert. Hollywood Sportatorium. They opened for Molly Hatchet and The Outlaws. Right when Rockin into the Night was coming out. I was 14.
Hollywood sportatorium, like being in a tin can(and we loved every minute of it! Great interview, I'm a new subscriber and 38 special allways one of my fav's! So tight, I still play their albums at least once a month , still dig it!

You have always been a favorite player to me. I have said that a guitarist that becomes one with the music, you can tell who hits what I call “wrestling the demon”. You’re awesome brother! I've always appreciated Jeff Carlisi's playing. His solos were melodic with some growl in them too. Always fit the song perfect!!!! An underated guitarist is an understatement to me. Thank God I saw skynrd in 74 , Cleveland Mississippi, they were set up on a flat bed trailer in a big cow barn, and they flat blew it out, what a memory to this day.

I could listen all day long! 52 years old and 38 special was the first concert I ever went to when I was just a kid in 1983. St. Petersburg Florida at the Bayfront Center Arena, 2 drummers, laser light show-Awesome! Joan Jett opened the show. I’ll never fucking forget it!!! I’ve seen them several times since over the years, they never disappointed.

I never saw 38 at the LCC (would years later in a casino)- but did see many shows there as a teen living in St Pete! AC/DC, Rush, Maiden, Sabbath (Dio), great venue! Jeff was a joy to hear then and now!
@@Hamrhed545 I screwed up Ryan, too many shows! It was at the Bayfront in St. Pete! I saw Def Leppard as well in 1983 in Lakeland. That was a great show too, the openers were Krokus and John Butcher Axis. It’s funny, John Butcher now lives about a mile from my house is Massachusetts. I see him occasionally around town and have had a chance to reminisce about that show. I even got him to sign my ticket stub which I still have. He’s a great guy.

Thanks for letting us get to 'hang out' for an afternoon with Jeff! What a sincere, cool guy! I was probably 8 or 10 years old when I first heard 38 and his playing really got me started on the guitar :) Funny enough, I never rushed to learn anything much he did because I always knew it was the way he played it and the ability to work that into the context of that song/band dynamics that really made it special. That's the mark of a true artist - you just stand back and appreciate it.

In 1983 i was a young, 13 yo guitarist playing for a little over a year and I was always glued to MTV and I remember this dude's videos being a highlight of my day whenever they came on. Even back then I could tell he was totally unique and all of his solos were very well constructed, but flashy too. Plus the explorer was badass.
Virtually all, if not all of his solos were played on his LP Deluxe with the mini-hums. He told me this when I was randomly asking about that guitar. Of course now I want one, haha... thanks for listening man, glad you enjoyed this!

The pilots of the Skynyrd plane DUMPED the fuel when they realized they were going to crash to avoid burning up because they knew crashing was inevitable. They didn’t run out of fuel.

I hate change! A friend of mine walked up to me one day and says ' ROLLIN, you know,the only thing that doesn't change? Me: what's that Les? He says that everything changes. He had just heard the song, Time marches on by Tracy Lawerence. And then he walked away. It left me, like damn. I hate change. But as these two guys said, if you don't learn to adjust to it,you are going to be in for magnified disappointments. I really enjoyed this interview with Jeff Carlisi. He's a living legend.

I'm a huge Skynyrd/38 fan...somewhere around 1980,I won a contest on a Long Island radio station (I THINK it was WLIR)...the prize was tickets to see 38 at The Pallidium in NYC and then hang with them in the lobby and drink free beer (those were the days!)...Jeff is so humble for such a talented and successful musician...loved the history,the stories,and those guitars (that iconic Explorer 😛)...I got more enjoyment out of this than any interview I've seen before...God bless!

Cool Story:
I wanted to see them SO BAD, I coerced my high school Art Teacher into allowing us to form an Art Club for the sole purpose of chartering a bus and going on a “High School Field Trip”
The amusement rides were cool, but the open air concert was my mission.
I rounded up/enlisted enough “honorary art club members” to fill a bus.
What a JAM !
(That became my nickname in school)

I just saw 38 special in Sarasota FL. They were great.
Dimarzio owns the “Double Cream” patent. Aside from that Jeff is a killer player and has left many of us with tons of joy through his music with .38. We’ve actually crossed paths a few times with mutual friends and he’s a great guy. God Bless him.

1 of my biggest regrets I missed a 38 special concert at kings dominion amusment Park in Virginia, have no idea what I had to do that weekend all I remember is I missed 38 special
I can’t believe I’m just seeing this interview! Jeff has always been my favorite. I could listen to him all day. He’s seen so much of the history of southern rock and rock music in general. Years ago I was so excited when .38 Special was playing our local fairgrounds. I never got the opportunity to see them when they played big venues. I was disappointed when I went to the show and Jeff was no longer with them. I understand that he did what was best for him and I can’t fault him for that. I got to see Don Barnes and Donnie Van Zant before Donnie retired from touring. Jeff is one of the often overlooked, highly underrated, and criminally under appreciated guitarist of all time. I grew up listening to Skynyrd and .38 Special. They were the soundtrack to my childhood and teenage years in the 70s and 80s growing up in SC. I still listen to them often. Thank you Mr. Carlisi for everything you’ve contributed to music and beyond. You seriously need to write a book with all your stories.

The whole interview pretty amazing. I'm pretty blown away by the Ronnie Van Zant friendship. Basically if Jeff had not finished college he would have never become a rock star?! That goes to show you timing is everything. Speaking of which I had no idea Ben Orr spent his last year alive with a supergroup I never knew about with all A-list legends. That group played in South Florida only a couple months after I moved back.

Have been a big Carlisi fan since the .38 Special early days! Jeff’s a worldclass composer of phenomenal guitar licks and a master with the instrument. Those guys together put out some of the best rock and roll hits of the century! I Love the music of .38 Special and the guitarwork of Carlisi was such a big part of their sound and show! His guitarwork paired up with the awesome signature vocals of Don Barnes was a match made in Rock Heaven!

Am 59 this August, been to a lot of live concerts, out of all of them some where pretty darn good, but none where as good vas 38 Special. But, the next day I put on the "Are You Ready" live album and just let Barry's tone take me back to my teen years and I realized that he is not suffering with that disease anymore. And that can't be bad for him. And I still have all that music. My son works at the Gibson factory in Nashville, TN and when I texted him about Barry's passing he promised that when the next LP Deluxe came across his bench he would play "Spooky" on his phone and put some extra love in that guitar for the next Barry Bailey disciple. ROCK ON, BARRY!

I don't understand running out of fuel either Jeff! As a pilot myself, I have put myself (through thought) in that situation many times, and the only thing I can attribute the accident to, is "get-there-itis". It's a phenomenon in aviation, that has sadly taken many many lives!! Love your style and AWESOME playing Jeff. Huge, Huge fan since the very late 1970's, and still am today. Thanks for the music, and the memories!!!!

There is a new movie Atticus Pyle produced that shows exactly how they ran out of fuel. Though it paints Artimus as a Superhero and is not 100%acccurate they got the details of the crash right as far as how it transpired. Basically the rookie co-pilot accidentally dumped the fuel while trying to raise the landing gear back up. Great interview subscribed with notifications look forward to more!

Jeff spent so much time at hell house with the Skynyrd guys so how did Jeff not end up not in Skynyrd instead of Ed ……even though Ed was a phenomenal monster player and defined Skynyrd sound. Just wondered why it wasn’t jeff. I got photos of Jeff sitting on the couch with Ronnie when Skynyrd was writing songs

What a great guitarist
The pilots dumped the fuel just before it crashed. One of the passengers said the looked out the window and saw fuel being dumped on the tops of the pine trees they were basically gliding above skimming just before they hit the oak tree and it split the plane open. That's the official report on the ran out of fuel thing. The first engine cut out because it flat out stopped running it wasn't because of running out of fuel the fuel was dumped.
I absolutely loved this interview with Jeff Carlisi he is such an underrated guitar player but I am so happy to find out he has done well since he’s 38 days and I hope continued success for him I could not stop watching this when I found it just amazing videoAnd interview thank you for this
