Hi Ken ! My wife just got the call to go to Adam's Creek !! Nice video, thanks for sharing, it gives us an idea. Shel be there in 3 days. She was staying with me at Vega Tower ( Whitecourt ). Your tower looks nice, I hope my wife will like it. Any idea about Bears ? She's kind of afraid of big wildlife. Im guessing there wont be any bears in that tower though, as it would be too much energy for them to find food up there. Any extra info that would be useful to her would be nice before she leaves if you see this message before the 29th May 2018.
H! Hobo. Congrats! and good luck to your wife on her new adventure at Adams Creek Lookout. Glad to hear that the lookout is still being manned and looked after. I assume that the buildings have since been updated and modernized as to what the old pics in this video show. The nature at Adam's should be a bit more dramatic than Vega Tower but non the less just as safe. To answer your question about bears? Yes, the likelihood of bears at the lookout is slim, however, it is grizzly country. Just make sure to not leave garbage about and burn it in the "burning barrel" when applicable. (around the 8:00 minute mark of this video is a pic of a young Grizzly foraging about in the lower meadows below Adams lookout). There should be a colony of Hoary Marmots and Golden Mantled ground squirrels there to help keep you/her company and entertained. It has been 30 odd years since I've been there and I still have fond memories of experiencing life in that special place. Take care and feel free to contact me if you need any other info. I would love! to hear from you both later on how the 2018 fire season went.
hey Ken I just applied to be a lookout observer in Alberta for the upcoming season. Couple of quick questions if you don't mind. how difficult is the climb up the towers? and I can't seem to find a concrete answer on how many hours of work a week there are, I understand it is weather dependent, but do you remember on average about how many hours you worked a week? thanks!
Megan Walters I applied Jan 14, a day before the deadline. the only response i got was them telling me the documents I had attached to the email weren't opening. so I sent them working ones and haven't heard back since. when did you apply?
Its not hard climbing the Tower per se, providing you are in reasonable shape. Those who work at 100' tower locations usually climb them multiple times daily and with ease after practice. All good! exercise. Unless, of course you have a cushy mtn. top lookout location. As for "work hours"?, you are expected to be available 24/7, since you essentially live at your Tower location. There are daily routine tasks, i.e. recording weather observations and radio communications.. etc. The AFS will train the new lookout observers at the Hinton Forestry school before dispatching them. At least I assume they still do? And I think they (AFS) will pay you on a daily rate basis. But, that's what it was 30 odd years ago. Anyways, hope this info is of some help to you. Good luck!! with your application.
been doing 300 hours in 25 days here in Vega. Were on extreme all day. Its extensive haha, last year I did about 5 days of extreme in my whole 6 months season. Now Im at 20 days.
Beautiful ken! Thanks for sharing your memories and your art!
