This album debuted in April of 87. Every song being is good as the next. The last of the true old school rockers before Grunge took over. I joined the Army just after that and this was heard throughout the barracks at a VERY high frequency in 88 once I got out of basic. This was EVERYWHERE.
No, it wasn't an instant hit. "Welcome to the Jungle" was their first single. The main song on Clint Eastwood's "The Dead Pool". It did nothing. Nobody paid attention. When "Sweet Child O Mine" was released, THAT'S when GnR instantly became huge.
@@correctlyrics I should have made myself more clear. This ALBUM was everywhere by the time I was in the Army in 88. Instant hit was incorrect I suppose. Thanks.
It was released July 21st 1987 and got little attention until the following year after Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine were released. Do your research properly.
Fun fact: When this aired on mtv, the phonelines ignited because there were so many calls, from an article with the bands manager (Also for Mötley Crüe) Tom Zutaut: “Basically,” Zutaut recalled, “he says, ‘The MTV switchboard blew up last night. Too many phone calls came in, it sparked the thing and it melted.’” The channel had never had so many calls - and requests for the “Welcome To The Jungle” video continued into the following day. “Every kid in America is calling them requesting this video,” Coury told Zutaut, “and they know there’s no way we could have paid that many people to do it.”
I had worn out 2 cassettes before Welcome ever dropped. My best bud's (RIP) uncle showed up and said "check out this tape, I don't know who they are but the cover is cool" We popped it in and even before Axl finished the opening scream I looked at my buddy and said "this is the greatest band ever" And so it has been ever since My other friends went crazy when the video was released and all I could say was "see I told you!!!"
Back when album sales were still the primary measure of success, this was the highest selling debut album of all time (still holds that record for physical albums).
You guys deserve a TV show. Reactions and comments are so dialed in and spot on! And such a down to earth genuinely cool couple. Enjoyed it again. Thank you
Axl's natural voice is quite low. He used to sing with that voice. One day, he got mad and screamed a lyric in a higher voice. One of the band's gfs told him that THAT was the way he should sing. So ..he changed how he sang...and our Axl was born. If you listen to "Mr Brownstone", you can hear his more natural singing voice.
Dan McCafferty from Nazereth is what his vocal style is based off of. I believe it was Izzy at the time who overheard him singing in that voice and told him he should always sing that way. It became his signature from there on out
Axl arrived in by bus in Los Angeles at 18 years old to pursue a music career. It's more or less about the immense culture shock he experienced. Forgot to mention he was coming from Indiana I can only imagine the adjustment would be huge.
Yeah, Axl hitch hiked to L.A. with a backpack and thats it. The band even lived together in a storage unit for a while. Before the days of american idol, lol. Legend.
I think it's in the Roxy 87 concert where Axl tells the audience that someone yelled "You're in the jungle baby, you're gonna die" at him when he got off the bus.
@@jco207 The bus story is true, but it happened in New York at a different time. But he did write the song about Los Angeles. I know this because I am old.
GnR literally EXPLODED onto the scene with this song and album in 1987 .. it was a fantastic cap to the Hair Band trend of the 80s, but the talent of Axl Rose (a classically trained pianist) and Slash (who makes most people's top 10 rock guitarists of all time and my personal top 5) showed they were so much more than a Hair Band
I got to see them before they hit it big as an opening act for the The Cult and my friends and I walked out at the end of the concert saying they were going to be huge. They were obviously the real deal.
I was 17 driving home from my part time job one night and this came on. That intro kicked in and I was hooked immediately and turned it up full volume!

What a bunch of BS! Are people today really that silly to believe these 2 have never heard Guns n' Roses Welcome to the Jungle? Seriously y'all got to be kidding me right now. Here's a question for ya. "Ever wonder about those people who spend $3 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backwards." WTF Blah,ha,ha!!!
From the day this album was released in 87 I stuck it in my car CD player and didn't take it out for close to 6 months. Over and over, didn't have to skip a track, every song rocked as hard as the last, no weak tracks. Turn it up to 11 and let it rip. One of the greatest hand full of albums ever released.
I was stationed in Germany in 87, 88, 89. I had no clue what Guns and Roses was. A guy shows up to our unit, fresh from the states and says, you gotta hear guns and roses. He got laughed at until he put the CASSETTE on. We were hooked.

Yeah, song's about the singer's experience in moving to L.A. from Indiana and becoming exposed to the whole Hollywood/rock and roll lifestyle in that "concrete jungle," just like you pointed out. Drugs, sex, fame, etc. That line in the breakdown where he says "You know where you are? You're in the jungle, baby. You're gonna die!" is allegedly taken from something a homeless man told him shortly after he got off the bus when he first got to L.A.
Actually, the homeless man sayin' "You know where you are? You're in the jungle, baby. You're gonna die!" story was in NYC. Axl tried NY first, briefly, before goin' to L.A. Pretty sure he bussed to New York, wasn't the right scene for him, then hitch hiked to L.A.

Great job with your reaction to Welcome To The Jungle from Guns and Roses. All there songs are based on true events and things that has happened to them in the band ( except one I used to love her that one's a joke.) this song is about Axl Rose going to the city for the first time and meeting up with Izzy to form Guns and Roses.
The song is about the craziness Axl saw in LA after moving there from Indiana. If can see the reference to Indiana in the wheat in Axl's mouth when he is getting off the bus at the beginning of the video. He has said the people in LA were nuts when he first arrived. The song title (Welcome to the Jungle) came from a homeless drug addict who screamed at Axl: " Welcome to the Jungle. You're gonna die" while Axl was walking by one night
I was working at a junior high when Guns and Roses came out. I always liked Bob Dylan and Led Zeppln but when I heard Axl I was blown away. Thanks for sharing.

Both Axl and Izzy Stradlin -- the second guitarist are from the same town in Indiana. Another singer Shannon Hoon of Blind Melon was also from that same town and he knew Axl. Shannon Hoon is in the Guns N Roses video for "Don't Cry."
When the singer Axl Rose got off the bus from Indiana to L.A. a homeless man said to him, “You know where you are? You’re in the jungle baby and you’re gonna die.” That’s where the songs idea started.
16 when this hit. Biker strip bars and booze. We were teenagers. And we did it. Ontario/ Quebec, Canada border. And still made it to school the next day.
if you consider the following, it's good going, 1 V good (Appetite), 1 okay (GNR Lies), 2 overblown (Use Your Illusion i & 11) ,there's a decent album in there somewhere and 2 utter shite (Spaghetti and Chinese Democracy). To be fair to Chinese Democracy if it had be released about 10 years earlier than it was, it would have been in the okay category, but it just missed its time by a decade.
when axl arrived in nyc in the 80's, some old black guy saw him get off the bus and told him "do you know where you are? your in the jungle baby and your gonna die"!
The Jungle Axl is specifically referring to in the song is Los Angeles…but it’s also any big city in the world that can & will eat you alive if you’re not careful🤘🏼
I can recommend the band " Simply Red " their song " Holding Back The Years " or " Mike and the Mechanics " song " The Living Years " both great songs. Great reaction and channel enjoy the discovery of new artists and songs.
I was stationed in Long Beach when this album exploded. I used to hang out with some friends who had an apartment in Belmont Shores, always a party going on with a bunch of girls from Long Beach State. There was this guy that dropped by with a friend of ours who told us about hanging out with some of the band members totally loaded on speed balls during that time. Really crazy $h!t. Also, I walked into a used record store sometime in the summer of 88 on Sunset Strip just checking out what they had. The place was like a small warehouse with rows of records to look through. I noticed when I walked in that it was pretty much deserted except a girl and guy about my age, the girl worked there and I assumed that the guy was her boyfriend come to hang out. Anyhow, I found a record to buy and took it up to the register. As the girl was ringing me up I looked over to my left at the dude, and there sitting behind the counter was Axle Rose which was definitely a surprise. I’m not really into being wowed by celebrities, but I got an autograph just to show my shipmates…lol The 80’s were a very killer time to be young fur sure.
Since when have Guns N Roses been glam rock? they are nothing like glam rock and their biggest influence is Aerosmith and they certainly aren't glam rock

When the singer Axl Rose got off the bus from Indiana to L.A. a homeless man said to him, “You know where you are? You’re in the jungle baby and you’re gonna die.” That’s where the songs idea started.
Great song from a great album
Their new single PERHAPS has just dropped
When this hit.....the bottom dropped out!!
Awesome analyses, well done!
Great analysis. Especially for a first time listen!
This song was in a Clint Eastwood movie.. dead pool .. Jim Carrey was the singer.. sweet child of mine is a must.. many others
16 when this hit. Biker strip bars and booze. We were teenagers. And we did it. Ontario/ Quebec, Canada border. And still made it to school the next day.
🤘😎🤘 According to R.I.A.A. - As of 2022 - GnR has sold 97.5 million albums. Not bad considering they've only released 6 albums.
if you consider the following, it's good going, 1 V good (Appetite), 1 okay (GNR Lies), 2 overblown (Use Your Illusion i & 11) ,there's a decent album in there somewhere and 2 utter shite (Spaghetti and Chinese Democracy). To be fair to Chinese Democracy if it had be released about 10 years earlier than it was, it would have been in the okay category, but it just missed its time by a decade.
Fronted by Mr. Hissy Fit himself.
Axl most likely is Bi-Polar. Thus, all the drama over the years. But I ❤him!😊
when axl arrived in nyc in the 80's, some old black guy saw him get off the bus and told him "do you know where you are? your in the jungle baby and your gonna die"!
What can I say about these boys legend
I’m not really into being wowed by celebrities, but I got an autograph just to show my shipmates…lol
The 80’s were a very killer time to be young fur sure.
Great reaction. They're classified as a "glam rock" band, but they DO go much deeper than the noise & flash. Thank you!
Since when have Guns N Roses been glam rock? they are nothing like glam rock and their biggest influence is Aerosmith and they certainly aren't glam rock
YES! (6:46 mark) Please do your hair like that. I would love to see you with a hairstyle from my day and age.
This was the walk up of Eric Gänge relief pitcher for LA Dodgers.
I didn't see it mentioned in the comments. Jim Carrey sang this in a Clint Eastwood movie.
Appetite For Destruction was the first CD that I ever bought. Sweet Child O' Mine is arguable the greatest song of the 80s.
Such a great band
Listening to this again -- it is a completely underrated rock song. It has so many great elements, originality, great writing, and more. All around great song. Pretty incredible.
The song was about him and his view of Los Angeles.
Come in. Barbell had this figured out perfectly.
A country boy shows up in the big city, and has to learn fast how to survive
The lead guitarist Slash is awesome
all time classic! ♥
OMG I love this song !!!!!
