I appreciate the intent of your statement but it's a bit misleading... the Rockman itself is actually a digital synthesizer of sorts, but it was the first one for guitars. Also, there is an organ prominently featured throughout this piece - so it's not 100% guitars. Tom Scholz practically invented 80's guitar sound - Def Leppard used Rockman effects heavily on their Hysteria album - but it doesn't make a guitar sound like an organ.
Was in high school when this came out. We used to play this in the first farm tractor we had with enclosed cab. Wore a 8 track of this out. It’s still an incredible song. Thanks for playing and glad you guys enjoyed it

Tom Scholz is a classically trained pianist, multi-instrumentalist, has a masters degree from MIT, is an inventor. He invented the pedals that created the spaceship sounds that you hear and is famous for the Rockman line of guitar pedals and other gear.
The original Rockman was basically a walkman like guitar amp you could plug in headphones or into your stereo. As you mentioned he followed that up with a line of effect pedals and equipment he developed.
@@genegiusti6239 The Rockman is a guitar pre-amp with onboard effects processing that could be used in front of the guitar amp, as a preamp/DI direct into the console or as a pre-amp with a headphone jack that allowed the Rockman to be used as practice amp. Tom was never big into pedals and the vast majority of the Rockman line were the Rockmodules some of which were able to interface with each other via MIDI and the all of the Rockman models . The only effect pedals that Tom brought to market was a distortion pedal and a pedal that made an electric guitar sound more like an acoustic guitar.
Boston had such a unique sound because Tom Scholz not only wrote arranged and played most of the instrumental tracks, but also designed and built the effects equipment on this album. And this album was recorded in the basement of Tom's apartment. Back in the day and up to today people in search of a record deal will do what the label says. The label wanted to record at their studio in L.A. Tom refused. He wanted to do it in the basement. The rep started lo leave tom's apartment but stopped at the door and said "O.k. you record the tracks here. We'll mix them in L.A." Tom paused for a few seconds in shock. And then the rep said "And we'll split the producers fee."
That whole album was recorded and produced in his basement. The record company wanted him to re-record it in the studio but Tom told them no, he wanted it released as is, and that's what we all got, which is amazing!
@Eric_Day84 That is urban legend. First off no tracks from the demo that went to Epic and producer John Boylan were used on this record. This was confirmed by Tom when he was interviewed by people who would know if he was telling the truth or not. All of Brads vocals were recorded by producer John Boylan at Capital Studios Studio C. The entire song Let Me Take You Home which was written by Brad was recorded by producer John Boylan at The Record Plant LA. The record was mixed at Westlake Studios by producer John Boylan, engineer Warren Dewey and Tom. They like to think that a band plays together and hangs out and writes songs and gets a contract and goes into the studio and then they jam out in the studio and an album comes out of that. Boston's debut album is one of the rarest of rare albums which contains no clunkers. There is another band from Boston called "The Cars" who released their debut album two years after Boston's masterpiece was released. The Cars music is completely different than Boston's music, but The Cars debut album also a masterpiece which contains no clunkers. Two debut albums from two bands from Boston which were released two years apart and have no clunker songs on them. Amazing!
I became a teen in the late 70's right at the peak of a fantastic time for rock bands & tunes like this and into the 80's. This entire album is 🔥 from start to finish.
Best debut album ever. It’s an album of all hits. Not a stinker on the entire LP. Last saw them in early 2000s before Brad and Sib passed away. Great show, great music. Transported back in time to 1976. 70s and 80s, best decade in music history
I was a freshman in high school when this album was released in 1976 and I remember spending every day after school listening to it on repeat to learn all the rhythm and lead guitar 🎸 parts to the entire album.
I remember the first time hearing this album. A friend came over to my house with the album he got for Xmas. He said we HAD to listen to it. I put it on my dads stereo system with headphones for each of us. The looks we have each other were of shock and awe. I had never heard anything like it before, and have been a fan since that night in 77.
I remember hearing this "8 Track" tape in my friends car for the first time in 1976 when I was 16. It sounded so fresh compared to the rock that was out at the time (Zepplin, Hendrix, Deep Purple, Santana, CCR, Clapton,) just a few of the great tunes. Then this album came out and I knew even at that young age that this will be another timeless band. Its awesome to see you young'uns react the same way I did back then! My favorite song off this album: Something About You.
The “traveling through space”part, is exactly that! See the guitar/spaceship on the cover? The notes in there tell the story. Those notes are played on every album, telling the story of that particular album cover
My first concert. Saw them on this tour in 1977 at the ripe old age of 14 in Lexington, Ky. at Rupp Arena where the Kentucky Wildcats play. It was litterally a brand new arena, not even a year old yet. Boy time sure flies when your having fun because now I'm already turning 60 on November 30th. You guys should check out the song Smokin' from this same album. Killer tune, and I'll bet Samantha wouldn't be able to sit still to it. It rocks!
Tom Sholtz was the true musical genius of the 1970's, a real Mozart-level talent in my lifetime. He teamed up with an amazing vocalist, Brad Delp, to make the best debut album of the era. It was a massive accomplishment.
Got to see Boston Circa 1978 at the UCSB Basketball gymnasium as a 14 year old, Epic! They were special. The harmonies, guitar, piano and drums😳 Thanks for the memory rewind
Legend has it that Tom Scholz, the lead guitarist and MIT grad, wrote and performed all the off instruments on all of the songs (except for the vocals) in his parent's basement. Scholz is not only a musical genuis, he's also a prolific inventor of many electronic devices used in music. I used to own one of his inventions back in the day. It was called the Rockman and it was groundbreaking at the time. It was the first time you had a portable device about the size of three or four decks of cards that you could plug your guitar into and play with headphones or through an amp and sound like his distorted guitar tone on this album. It was truly innovative and amazing and I played the crap out of that thing. I wish I still had it.
This world lost a damned good voice with Brad Delp. This album is just insanely good, and their second album is just as good. If you ever want to do a full album you definitely couldn't go wrong with this one.
This intro album from Boston was their best. I picked this one up on the day it dropped. Thank goodness for Tower Records, they always carried the best LPs. #hangovergang forever 🤙🏽
I consider this one of the few perfect albums. There's not a single bad song on the whole album. Meatloaf Bat out of Hell is another album that every single track is great.
Boston was one of my favs back in the day. They were ahead of their time. I love how you guys interpret that old school vibe. Keep up the good work. God bless.
I liked your viewpoints about this band's song. I saw this band live in Amarillo, TX. What a great show they put on! They sounded as good live as they did on their recordings. They had a massive silkscreen backdrop that showed a giant pipe organ that would light up in unison whenever they played the organ. I was in my early twenties and that was over forty years ago. It's permanently etched in my mind.
Boston, Kansas, Foreigner, and The Cars debuted with 2 years of each other. Along with everyone else, it was a particularly great two years of rock and roll!
Guys! , do next from them, these other's super bangers hits : "Don't look back", "I need your love", "Amanda" , "Livin' for you", "Smokin", & "A man i'll never be"

The Cars music is completely different than Boston's music, but The Cars debut album also a masterpiece which contains no clunkers. Two debut albums from two bands from Boston which were released two years apart and have no clunker songs on them. Amazing!
Brad Delp did all the lead and backing vocals on this whole album. Incredible.
I'm 61 years old and It's nice seeing people as young as you enjoying songs I listened to in high school.
I became a teen in the late 70's right at the peak of a fantastic time for rock bands & tunes like this and into the 80's. This entire album is 🔥 from start to finish.
Bro. Gimme a Boston album and I'll show you flawless. Or Pink Floyd. All without auto tune!
Best debut album ever. It’s an album of all hits. Not a stinker on the entire LP. Last saw them in early 2000s before Brad and Sib passed away. Great show, great music. Transported back in time to 1976. 70s and 80s, best decade in music history
When this came out I would listen to the entire album on headphones every night.
This album is in my personal top 5 debut albums in history. Literally every song is a classic on this album.🔥
I really can not think of any bands today that can compare to the days of many bands like this ,at that time ! Can You !
I was a freshman in high school when this album was released in 1976 and I remember spending every day after school listening to it on repeat to learn all the rhythm and lead guitar 🎸 parts to the entire album.
Hard to believe that this is half a century old and still attracting new fans.
WELCOME to pure Rock N Roll talent!!❤❤ Drop the mic ....
It doesn’t get much better than this
RIP Brad Delp. Boston was amazing... Thank you Ton Scholtz.
It rocks!
This album was a breath of fresh air to my 18 year old ears 😮
I love how you guys get into the music. I'm over 50 and I grew up with this music. Thank you for the memories. I truly enjoy your enthusiasm.
Lead vocalist Brad Delp had one of the best voices in rock.
My HS basketball team ran on the court to this tune. Awesome memories. Classic banger.
Tom Sholtz was the true musical genius of the 1970's, a real Mozart-level talent in my lifetime. He teamed up with an amazing vocalist, Brad Delp, to make the best debut album of the era. It was a massive accomplishment.
Boston is feel-good music! 🎶
I was 8 years old when this was released. If you woulda been there back then, you woulda lost your fuckin mind, this was so far ahead of it's time
Music is the closest thing to a Time Machine. This took me back to my ‘72 VW Beetle, blasting on my 8-track through Jensen Triax speakers.
one of the most amazing songs ever written.
i wore out two copies of this album on 8 track in my '72 Dodge Charger.... great memories. Yes, I am that old.....
Boston was the real deal. Their first two LP's were epc. SO good. Thanks for sharing this one. 🙂
Hey Phil and Sam, the next Boston song you should definitely check out is the title track of their 2nd album, "Don't Look Back"
Boston songs matched the car speakers so well back then... 6 X 9s and tweeters.. crank it up
Tom Sholz is a perfectionist with the first album i truly believe he achieved it
What these young people don't understand is Boston had a unique and clean sound.
I always put this song on rock playlists I used to make for my brother in law to work out to. He so loved this song
This world lost a damned good voice with Brad Delp. This album is just insanely good, and their second album is just as good. If you ever want to do a full album you definitely couldn't go wrong with this one.
Very true
This intro album from Boston was their best. I picked this one up on the day it dropped. Thank goodness for Tower Records, they always carried the best LPs.
#hangovergang forever 🤙🏽
I consider this one of the few perfect albums. There's not a single bad song on the whole album.
Meatloaf Bat out of Hell is another album that every single track is great.
I agree and I personally would add Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet" album as well. I was a college freshman when it came out.
Steely Dan's AJA is about a perfect album as it goes. recording engineers use it to calibrate recording equipment
Boston was one of my favs back in the day. They were ahead of their time. I love how you guys interpret that old school vibe. Keep up the good work. God bless.
Real music..
Guys! , do next from them, these other's super bangers hits : "Don't look back", "I need your love", "Amanda" , "Livin' for you", "Smokin", & "A man i'll never be"
I choose this as my song to play at my funeral when I was age 16. I’m now getting ready to be 62 and it still remains my request.
