  • The Indian Gaur is the largest bovine species in the world, with males weighing upto 1,500kg. Although often inaccurately referred to as the Indian Bison, gaur are actually more closely related to wild cattle rather than bison. In the wild, the gaur have very few predators. In fear of a gaur attack, tigers only occasionally attempt to hunt these bovines. National Geographic have few short clips of a a tiger successfully hunt the Indian Gaur.
The gaur is disturbed across the moist deciduous and evergreen forests of south and south east Asia. In India, specifically, the species is best seen in the Western Ghats, with populations also recovering in the Central Indian Tiger Landscape. In south-east Asia, the species is heavily threatened by poaching for the illegal wildlife trade.
