One of these guys lives near me, and sometimes I’ll see him staring at me when I go for my nighttime runs. There camo doest really work when they are sitting on a white fence.

Australia, and the regions around it, are so lucky and blessed to have such wonderful, exotic animals that are the most cutest and adorable animals I have ever seen. Tawny Frogmouths are too cute for words. 😍
Oh gosh, these guys are my second-favourite birds, right after penguins! Thanks to their giant mouth and expressive eyes, they look like real-life Muppets!
Loved seeing this as I recently had a Tawny frogmouth encounter whilst on a week stay in Port Macquarie (NSW). One was sitting for hours in a tree in full sight next to a 2nd level patio I managed to get a few great photos including a yawn showing the frog like mouth, I was really surprised however to find out that it isn't actually an owl as they look so much like one. The drawing is great too !!
as an autralian, im really glad that you guys have been pumping out all this aussie content! its interesting to see danielle talking about animals that i see quite regularly!!
Aw this was great! It would be so cool to cover the Potoo as well in the future! They're like the derpiest birds I have ever seen and I love them for it lol. Love the stance they and Frogmouths take to look like a branch. On another note, Danielle's shirt is amazing! 🖤
What really gives me the image of owl relation, is their head movements... Rocking side to side while looking at something interesting just like most owls do.
Tawny Frogmouths are the best. I love listening to them at night, especially now on winter on a foggy night. (For those who don't know what they sound like, you really need to look it up.) Every house I've lived in has had a friendly neighbourhood Tawny Frogmouth. This house is the first where their superior stealth capabilities have failed - it doesn't quite work so well on a power pole... Still, they're an absolutely amazing bird. And I'm grateful that I live in their territories.
Probably not next, but at some point, I'd love to have you do something on the tawny frogmouth's close relative; the potoo. Very meme-worthy birb and one that thanks to that stupid "genetically engineered owl" nonsense, has a bit of a maligned reputation.
I live in an area of NSW called the Blue Mountains. We've got a lot of gorgeous birds up here and one day I was sitting with a cup of tea watching them when I felt like I was being watched. I looked around at the other trees and it took forever but I eventually saw what looked like an angry muppet scowling at me. Pretty sure it was a tawny frogmouth. I hope.
I love how funny they look. Its like they're constantly extremely distressed by always accidentally walking into the bathroom and seeing someone naked.
U inspire me danielle ❤️ i want to become like you. Its fun exploring and learning new things plus paintings ! Cmon painting is one of my fav hobby. ☺️ Becoming like u is my dream and i will accomplish it sooner or later for sure. Thankyou dear ❤️
very impressed by their camouflage and contortion skills at 5:41. it seems like they actually observe and think how a branch should be like and how to match their surroundings!
Huh, I always knew them as owls. Learn something new every day. We used have a Tawny that frequented our backyard when we moved in our house 20 years ago, it literally pop in to say hello. I think that the previous tenants of the house used to feed it, coz every night it hang out in a tree out the back, go nuts when it saw one of us and then wait still with it's mouth open, after a little while it would fly away. One day it just stopped coming, I imagine since we weren't feeding it, it moved on. It's probably dead now but I still sometimes think of the friendly little fella.
As an American expat who has lived in Sydney for over 20 years, one of the happiest moments of my life was when my daughter and I were sitting on my bed at night and one landed on the fence outside the window. I lived in the centre of suburban Sydney and I’ve loved these birds for yonks, but had never seen one in the wild until this moment. It took so much self control to not scare it away by squealing with glee.
I'll never forget the family of Tawny Frogmouths that lived in the gum tree next door that overhung our drive way. Got home one night and went out the back to have a smoke at 1am and one flew onto the roof of our back fence, then swooped over my head onto the back patio, watched me for 5 minutes and then flew back up into the tree. Love these birds.
We had a tawny frogmouth on our walkies route that my dog would play with every night. They'd have a chat. Loudly. At 2 o'clock in the morning sometimes ( I'm a shift worker,) here's an example of the dialogue: Dog: Arf arf! Tawny: Crrrrackleackleackleararararara! Dog: Hwoo woo woo woo? Tawny: Currrakakakakakakakaka? Etc. You get the idea. I'd have to stand on the street corner and wait as they'd catch up. 🙄😆
Watched this for some more advice, and knowledge . As I found a large one today on my property, on the ground in the day light. I rescued it, from a prowling feral cat. Now waiting for the local wildlife service to come aroind and pick it up for some care, and treatment. Hopefully he , or she, gets well soon, I'll be praying for the poor little fella. Thanks for your video, was quite good to see.
I have one of these guys who live in my street. He likes to particularly hang out under the street light on top of the street sign. So my family decided to name him after the street. And when we see him we go “Hey! It’s Gladsby! He’s back!” When driving by. 🦉
Tawny frogmouths might look like owls, but some of the other frogmouths look less like owls and much more like potoos. And in fact, this makes a lot of sense; recent evidence demonstrates that frogmouths might be closer relatives of potoos than they are of nightjars. Behaviorally-speaking, frogmouths also have a lot of similarities with potoos.
I'm watching this hunching near the toilet bowl while throwing up my foods that I ate after drinking 6 tanduay dark long neck.. And I can't see anything but I like the audio mm
When I was a kid I heard "beepbeepbeepbeep" noise in the middle of the night wondering what the heck is going on... And I saw the outline of a tawny frogmouth. Ever since I have heard them heaps of times, one of those things you don't realise is everywhere until you notice it once. But they're usually very still and discreet and hard to see.
Thanks for profiling one of our fantastic Aussie nightbirds. We actually have 3 species of frogmouth: Tawny, Marbled and Papuan - Tawny is the only endemic with the latter two also occurring in PNG.
I am Australian, and live in Queensland with a lot of these frog mouths. I actually thought they were owls! They are so cute, we have one that crash lands into our house all the time, he comes to eat geckos and insects around the back patio.
